GETTING STARTED 3 INTRODUCTION Please check t hat you recei ved all of the following parts. 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Insert four supplied batteries (AAA, R03, UM- 4) according to the polarity markings on the inside of the battery compar tment.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 4 1 ST ANDBY/ON T urns on this unit or sets it to the standby mode. When you turn on this unit, you will hear a click a nd there will be a 4 to 5-second delay before this unit can reproduce sound. In standby mo de, this unit consumes a small amo unt of po wer in order to receive infrared-signa ls from the remote control.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 5 INTRODUCTION B PHONES (SILENT CINEMA) Outputs audio signals for pri v ate listening with headphones. When you connec t headphones, no sign als are output to the OUTPUT jacks or to the speakers. All Dolby Digital and DTS au dio signals are mix ed do wn to the left and right headphone channels.

SPEAKER SE TUP 11 PREP ARA TION + y The speaker layout abov e shows the standard ITU-R speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enj oy CINE MA DSP, multi-channel audio sources and THX. Fr ont speaker s ( FR and FL) The front speakers are used for the main source sound plus effect sounds.
12 SPEAKER SETUP Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) prope rly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers, and if the polarity of the speaker connect ions is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

14 SPEAKER SETUP ■ FRONT terminals Connect one or two sp eaker systems to these terminals. If you use only one speaker system, connect it to either the FR ONT A or B terminals. The Canada model cannot outpu t to two separate speaker systems simultaneously .

19 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION ■ Connections f or audio components ■ Connecting a turn table PHONO jacks are for connecti ng a turntable with an MM or high-output MC cartridge. If you ha ve a turntable with a low- output MC cartridge, use an in-line boosting transformer or MC-head amplifier when connecting to these jacks.
20 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting to an e xternal amplifier If you want to increase the po wer output to the speakers, or want to use another amplif ier , connect an external amplifier to the PRE OUT j acks as follows.
21 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION Both AM and FM indoor antennas ar e included with this unit. In genera l, these anten n as should provi de suf f icient signal strength. Connect each antenna correctly to the designated terminals. ■ Connecting the AM loop antenna 1 Set up the AM loop ante nna , then connect it to the terminals on this unit.
22 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting the A C power cor d (U.S.A. and Canada models) Plug the po wer cord into the A C inlet after all other connections are complete, then plug the power cord to an A C wa ll outlet. Do not use other A C power cords. Use the one pro vided.
23 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION If you are using 6 ohm speakers, set the impedance to 6 ohms as follow s before turning on the po wer . Be sure this unit is in the standby mode. 1 On the front panel, while pressing down SPEAKERS A, press ST ANDBY/ON. “SP IMP .
AUTO SETUP 24 This receiv er employs Y AM AHA Parametric Room Acoustic Optimize r (YP A O) technology which lets you av oid troublesome listenin g-based speaker setup and achiev es highly accu rate sound adjustments. The supplied optimizer microphone collects and analyzes the sound your speakers produce in y our actual listening en vironment.
25 AUTO SETUP PREP ARA TION For best results, make sure th e room is as quiet as possible during the auto setup proced ure. If there is too mu ch ambient noise, the results may not be satisf actory .

BASIC SETUP 28 The basic system parameters are set au tomatically when you run auto setup (page 24). The basic settings are useful if you want to quickly setup your speakers or to manually adjust some of the items set in auto setup .
29 BASIC SETUP PREP ARA TION 7 Press d to select SPEAKERS, then press j / i to select the number of speakers connected to th e unit. The choices vary as follo ws depending on the PRESENCE setting: 8 After you have finished the settings, press d , then press j / i to select: SET T o apply the changes.

32 PLAYBACK ■ Front pa nel operation Rotate PROGRAM to select the desired pr ogram. The name of the selected program appears on the front panel display and on the video monitor . ■ Remote contr ol operation Press AMP to select th e AMP mode, then press one of the sound field program buttons repeatedly to select the desired program.
33 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION • Some 6.1-channel compatible discs do not ha v e a signal (flag) which this unit can automatically detect. When playing these kinds of discs with 6.
34 PLAYBACK ■ Down mixing to 2 c hannels Y ou can enjoy 2-channel stereo playback ev en from multi- channel sources. Rotate PROGRAM (or press STEREO on the remote control) to select 2ch Stereo. y Y ou can use a subwoofer with this program when SWFR or BO TH is selected in LFE/BASS OUT.
35 PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION • When you play DTS encoded sources with the in put mode set to AU T O : – This unit automatically swi tches to the DTS decod ing mode. The unit remains in DTS mode (and the “ t ” indicator may flash) for up to 30 second af ter playback of the DTS source is complete.
TUNING 36 There are 2 tuning methods ; automatic and manual. Automatic tuning is ef fectiv e when station signa ls are strong and there is no interference. ■ A utomatic tuni ng 1 Rotate INPUT (o r press TUNER on the remote control) to select TUNER as the input source.
37 TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ A utomaticall y preset ting FM stations Y ou can use the automatic pres et tuning feature to store FM stations. This function enables this unit to automatically tune in to FM stations with strong signals, and to store up to 40 (8 stations x 5 groups, A1-E8) of those stations in order .
38 TUNING ■ Manuall y preset ting stations Y ou can also store up to 40 stat ions (8 stations x 5 groups) manually . 1 T une in to a station. See page 36 for tuning instructions. When tuned in to a station, the front panel display shows the frequenc y of the station receiv ed.
39 TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION Y ou can tune any desired sta tion simply b y select ing the preset station number unde r which it was stored. 1 Press A/B/C/D/E to select the preset station grou p. The preset group letter appears on the f ront panel display and changes each time you pres s the b utton.

45 ADVANCED OPERATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION ■ Canceling th e sleep timer Press SLEEP repeat edly until “SLEEP OFF” appears on the front panel display .
46 ADVANCED OPERATIONS Y ou can use the test tone feature to manually balance your speaker le ve ls. Please note that this operation will o v erride the le vel adju stments made in “A UTO SETUP” (page 24), “Speaker le v el” (page 50) and “Manually adjusting speaker le v els” (page 45).
SET MENU 47 AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can use the follo wing parameters in the set menu to adjust a variety of system setti ngs and customize the way this unit operates. Change the initial settings (indicated in bold under each parameter) to reflect the needs of your listenin g en vironment.

49 SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION Use to manually adjust an y speaker setti ng or compensate for video signal processing delays when using LCD monitors or projectors. Mo st of the SO UND parameters are set autom atically when you run auto setup (see page 24).
50 SET MENU Presence speakers PRESENCE SP Choices: NONE , YES • Select YES if you ha ve presence speak ers. • Select NONE if you do not have presence speakers. LFE/bass out LFE/BASS OUT LFE signals carry low-freq uen cy ef fects when this unit decodes a Dolby Digital or DTS signal.
51 SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION ■ Speaker dista nce SP DISTANCE Use this feature to manually input the distance of each speaker and adjust t he delay applie d to respecti v e channel. Ideally , each speaker should be the same di stance from th e main listening position.
52 SET MENU ■ Dynamic range DYNAMIC RANGE Use to select the amount of dynamic range compressio n to be applied to your speakers or headphones. This setting is effecti v e only when the unit is decoding Dolby Digital and DTS signals.

When you initialize a sound fie l d program group, all of the parameter values within that group rev ert to their initial settings.

REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 59 AD V ANCED OPERA TION In addition to controlling this unit, the remote control can also operate ot her A/V components made by Y AMAHA and other manufacturers. T o contro l other components, you must set up remote control with the appropriate manufacturer codes.
60 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Y ou can control other components by setting the appropriate manufacturer co de s. Codes can be set up for each input area. The following table sho ws th e f actory preset component (Library: component category ) and the manufacturer code for each area.
61 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION 5 Press LEARN again to ex it from the setup mode. • The supplied remote control does not contain all possible manufacturer codes for commerci ally available A V components (including Y AMAHA A V components).

63 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can clear all changes made in each function set, such as learned functions, rename d source names and setup manufacturer codes. 1 Press CLEAR by using a ballp oint pen or similar object. y Complete each of the follo wing steps in 30 seconds.
64 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Once you set the appropriate manufacturer codes, you can use this remote to co ntrol your other components. Note that some button s may not correctly operate the selected co mponent. Use the input selector b uttons to select the component you want to operate.

74 SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ■ LIVENESS Function: This paramete r adjusts the reflecti vity of the virtual w alls in the hall b y chan ging the rate a t which th e early reflec tions decay .
75 SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION ■ REV .TIME (Reverberation time) Function: This parameter adjusts the am ount of time it tak es for the dense, subsequent rev erberation soun d to decay by 60 dB (at 1 kHz). This changes the appa rent size of the acoustic environment o ver an extremely wide range.
76 SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ■ DIALG.LIFT (Dialog lift) Function: This parameter adjusts the hei ght of the front and center channel s ounds by assigning some of the fro nt and center cha nnel elements t o the presence spe akers. Description: The lar ger the parame ter , the higher the position of the front and center ch annel sound.

If the problem you are experiencing is not listed below or if the instruction belo w does no t help, set this unit to th e standb y mode, disconnect the po wer cord, and contact the nearest authorized Y AMAHA dealer or service center .
