E- 7 INTRODUCTION English w B ASS EXTENSION ON/OFF When pushed in (ON), this feature boosts the bass frequency of the left and right main channels by +6 dB (60 Hz) while maintaining overall tonal balance. This boost is useful if you do not use a subwoofer .
E- 8 CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS Remote control 1 Infrared window Outputs infrared control signals. Aim this window at the component you want to operate. 2 TRANSMIT Flashes while the remote control is sending signals. 3 ST ANDBY Sets this unit in the standby mode.

PREP ARA TIONS English E- 13 Preparations Preparations This section explains ho w to make preparations (speaker selection and placement, subwoofer usage, connection with other components, speaker mode setting, and speak er le vel adjustment) to fully use the DSP-AZ1.
E- 14 SPEAKER SYSTEM CONFIGURA TIONS The most complete speaker configur a tion consists of eight speakers: the left and right main speak ers, a center speaker , the lef t and right rear speakers, the left and right front ef fect speakers, and a rear center speaker .
E- 15 PREP ARA TIONS English SPEAKER SYSTEM CONFIGURA TIONS ■ 5-speaker configuration –standard 5.1 c hannel– This configuration does not e xpress the height of the sound field as well as the 7- or 8-speaker conf iguration. Howe ver , it positions the dialogue sound as coming directly from the screen.
E- 16 SPEAKER PLACEMENT Refer to the following diagram when you place the speak ers. Caution • Use magnetically shielded speakers. If this type of speakers still creates the interfer ence with a monitor , place the speakers away from the monitor .
E- 17 PREP ARA TIONS English SPEAKER PLA CEMENT ■ Placing the subwoof ers Place the front subwoofer near the main speakers. T urn it slightly tow ard the center of the room to reduce wall reflections. If you use a rear subwoofer , place it behind the main listening position.
E- 18 CONNECTIONS Before connecting components CA UTION Ne ver connect this unit and other components to mains power until all connections between components ha ve been completed. • Some components require dif ferent connection methods and ha ve dif fer ent jack names.
E- 19 PREP ARA TIONS English CONNECTIONS Connecting digital jacks This unit has digital jacks for direct transmission of digital signals through either coaxial or fiber optic cab les. Notes • DIGIT AL OUTPUT jacks and analog OUT (REC) jacks are independent.

Connect the composite video signal output jack on your D VD player to the D VD VIDEO jack. • If your D VD player has an S-video output or component video output, you can connect it to this unit.

E- 29 PREP ARA TIONS English Connecting speakers • Be sure to connect the left channel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) properly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers, and if the polarity of the speaker connections is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
E- 30 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting a fr ont subw oofer Connect the signal input jack on your subwoofer to the PREOUT/ MAIN IN SUBWOOFER MONO jack. By connecting two subwoofers to the SUBW OOFER SPLIT jacks, this unit can reproduce subtle directional changes in the low frequency sounds.

E- 32 CONNECTIONS ■ Connecting an e xternal decoder This unit is equipped with six additional input jacks (left and right MAIN , CENTER , left and right SURROUND and SUBWOOFER ) for discrete multi-channel input from an e xternal decoder , sound processor , or pre-amplifier .
E- 33 PREP ARA TIONS English ON-SCREEN DISPLA YS (OSD) Y ou can display the operation information for this unit on a video monitor . If you display the SET MENU and DSP sound field pro gram parameter .
E- 34 SPEAKER MODE SETTINGS This unit has sev en SPEAKER SET items in the SET MENU that you must set according to the number of speak ers in your configuration and their size. The follo wing table summarizes these SPEAKER SET items, and sho ws the initial settings as well as other possible settings.
E- 35 PREP ARA TIONS English SPEAKER MODE SETTINGS ■ 1A CENTER SP (center speaker mode) By adding a center speaker to your speak er configuration, this unit can pro vide good dialogue localization for many listeners and superior synchronization of sound and images.
E- 36 SPEAKER MODE SETTINGS ■ 1C REAR L/R SP (rear speaker mode) The OSD shows lar ge, small, or no rear speakers depending on how you set this item. The initial setting is “LRG”. LRG: Select the “LRG” setting if you ha ve lar g e left and right rear speakers or if you use a rear subwoofer .
E- 37 PREP ARA TIONS English SPEAKER MODE SETTINGS ■ 1E LFE/B ASS OUT (bass output mode) LFE signals carry lo w frequency effects when this unit decodes DTS or Dolby Digital signals. Lo w frequency signals are def ined as 90 Hz and belo w . The initial setting is “BO TH”.
E- 38 SPEAKER OUTPUT LEVELS This section explains ho w to set the speaker output levels using the test tone generator . The “TEST DOLBY SUR. ” is for balancing the output lev els of the six speakers required for surround sound systems.
E- 39 PREP ARA TIONS English SPEAKER OUTPUT LEVELS TEST DOLBY SUR. Select “TEST DOLBY SUR. ” to ma tch the output le vels of the center , rear center and left and right rear speakers to the left and right main speakers. 1 1 Press TEST on the remote control.

E- 42 BASIC PLA YBACK 1 1 Press ST ANDBY/ON (SYSTEM PO WER on the remote control) to turn on the po wer . The front panel (and the monitor screen) sho ws the lev el of the volume for a fe w seconds and then switches to show the current sound field program.
E- 43 B ASIC OPERA TIONS English 5 5 Adjust the v olume to the desired output level. If desired, use B ASS , TREBLE , BASS EXTENSION and B ALANCE . These controls ar e only effecti ve for sound from the main speakers.
E- 44 B ASIC PLA YBA CK Input modes and indications This unit comes with various input jacks. If your exter nal compo- nent is connected to more than one type of input jack, you can set the priority of the input signal.
E- 45 B ASIC OPERA TIONS English B ASIC PLA YBA CK ■ Notes on playing DTS-CD/LDs • If the digital output data of the player has been processed in any way , you may not be able to perform DTS decoding even if you make a digital connection between this unit and the player .
E- 46 B ASIC PLA YBA CK Selecting a sound field program Y ou can enhance your listening experience by selecting a DSP program. There are 12 programs with sub-programs a vailable with this unit. Howe ver the selection depends on the input signal format and not all the sub-programs are possible for all input signal formats .

Choose the appropriate item and adjust or select the v alues as necessary . Notes • Y ou can adjust the items in the SET MENU while reproducing a source.
E- 53 AD V ANCED OPERA TION English SET MENU ITEMS Operating the SET MENU Adjustment should be performed with the remote control. Notes • Some items require extra steps to change to the desired setting. • NEXT and SET MENU +/– on the front panel can be also used.
E- 54 SET MENU ITEMS 1 SPEAKER SET Set the speaker mode depending on your speaker system. See “SPEAKER MODE SETTINGS” on pages 34 to 37 for details about the setting items. 2 LOW FREQ. TEST Use this feature to adjust the output lev el of the subwoofer so it matches that of the other speakers in your configuration.

Control range (dB): –6 – +3 for both BASS and TRBL (treble) Initial setting: 0 dB for both B ASS and TRBL (treble) 1 1 Select “ BASS ” or “ TRBL ” .
E- 56 SET MENU ITEMS 6 CINEMA EQ Use this feature to match the tonal quality of four groups of speakers: the main and center speaker group, the front ef fect spe ak ers group, the rear speakers group, and the rear center speaker group. CINEMA-EQ consists of a high-shelving equalizer (HIGH) and a parametric equalizer (PEQ).
E- 57 AD V ANCED OPERA TION English SET MENU ITEMS ■ 6B FRNT EFCT EQ (front eff ect equaliz er) Use this feature to adjust the tonal quality of the front effect c hannels. Control range: 1.0 kHz – 12.7 kHz (HIGH: FRQ, PEQ: FRQ), –9 dB – +6 dB (HIGH: GAIN, PEQ: GAIN) Initial setting: 12.
E- 58 SET MENU ITEMS 8 I/O ASSIGNMENT It is possible to assign jacks according to the component to be used if this unit’ s COMPONENT VIDEO INPUT jack or DIGIT AL INPUT/ OUTPUT jack settings (component names for jacks) differ fr om tha t component. This mak es it possible to change the jack assignment and effecti vely connect more component.
E- 59 AD V ANCED OPERA TION English SET MENU ITEMS 9 INPUT MODE (initial input mode) Use this feature to designate the input mode for sources connected to the CO AXIAL (OPTICAL) IN jacks when you turn on this unit (see page 44 for details about the input mode).
E- 60 12 DYNAMIC RANGE Use this feature to adjust the dynamic range. This setting is ef fective only when this unit decodes Dolby Digital signals. Choices: MAX, STD, MIN Initial setting: MAX (for both speakers and headphones) Caution • Some types of the Dolby Digital software do not support “MIN” for the dynamic range.

E- 64 REMOTE CONTROL FEA TURES The remote control can operate not only the main unit but also other Y amaha and other manufactures’ audio and video components by using the Learning function and other manufactures’ code settings.
E- 65 AD V ANCED OPERA TION English ■ Source select Y ou can control another component independently from the input you selected by pressing an input selector button. Press SOURCE SELECT / to choose a component and set the remote control to be used for it.
E- 66 REMO TE CONTROL FEA TURES Setting the manufacturer code Y ou can control other components by setting a manufacturer code. A code can be set up in each component control area except for the OPTN area. The Y amaha code is factory preset for TUNER , MD/T APE , CD-R , CD and DVD .

For example, when you want t o play a CD , normally you would turn on the components, select the CD input, and press the play b utton to star t playback.

E- 78 REMO TE CONTROL FEA TURES Changing the source name in the display window Y ou can change the name that appears in the display window on the remote control if you want to use the dif ferent name from the original input selector button names. This is useful when different component is set in the input selector button.

E- 83 AD V ANCED OPERA TION English ZONE 2 Y ou can make up a multi-room audio-video system with this unit. W ith this fea ture, you can set this unit to reproduce separate input sources in the main room and second (Zone 2) room using the supplied remote control in the second room.
E- 84 ZONE 2 Remote control in ZONE 2 In the second (Zone 2) room, the supplied remote control can be used as the Zone 2 remote control. Y ou can select the input source and control the component which is located in the main room directly from the second room regardless of the listening condition in the main room.

E- 86 DIGIT AL SOUND FIELD PROCESSING (DSP) Understanding sound fields A sound field is def ined as the “characteristic sound reflections of a particular space”. In concert halls and other music venues, we hear early reflections and re verberations as well as the direct sound produced by the artist(s).
E- 87 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS English DIGIT AL SOUND FIELD PROCESSING (DSP) Recreating a sound field Recreating the sound field of a concer t hall or an opera house requires localizing the virtual sound sources in your listening room. The traditional stereo system that uses only two speakers is not capable of r ecr eating a realistic sound field.
E- 88 HI-FI DSP-SOUND FIELD PROGRAM Programs and features • These programs are the most suitable for the stereo music sources such as CDs. • Sound f ield is created using four effect speak ers (front L, front R, rear L and rear R) in addition to the main speakers.

Almost the whole interior is made of wood. There is relati vely little reflection from the walls, and sound spreads f inel y and beautifully .
E- 90 CINEMA-DSP SOUND FIELD PROGRAM The sound design of CINEMA-DSP sound field programs Filmmakers intend the dialog to be located right on the screen, the ef fect sound a little farther back, the music spread e ven f arther back, and the surround sound around the listener .
E- 91 SOUND FIELD PROGRAMS English CINEMA-DSP SOUND FIELD PR OGRAM Programs and features If a Dolby Digital signal or DTS signal is input when the input mode is set to “ AUT O”, the DSP program will be automatically sw itched to the Dolby Digital playback sound field or DTS playback sound f ield.
