Designing Y our Installation 975-0128-01-01 3–3 Installation Codes Governing installation co des vary depending on the location and typ e of installation. Electrical installations must meet local and national wiring codes and should be performed by a qualified electrician.
Installation 3–4 975-0128-01-01 Choosing an Appropriate Location The inverter must only be in stalled in a location that is: : WA R N I N G The inverter contains component s that tend to pro duce arcs or sparks.
Designing Y our Installation 975-0128-01-01 3–5 Calculating Cable Sizes T o operate safe ly and effectively , the XPower Inverter 3000 Plus nee ds proper cables and fuses.
Installation 3–6 975-0128-01-01 Calculating Size of Chassis Ground Cable Refer to T able 3-2 to plan the size of the chassis ground cable that runs from the DC grounding point to the chass is ground screw on the inverter ’ s DC panel.
Designing Y our Installation 975-0128-01-01 3–7 Calculating Fuse/Circuit Br eaker Size Because your batteries can provide thousands of am ps of short-circuit current, you need fu ses or circuit brea kers that can safely withstand the short-circuit current that the batteries can produce.
Installation 3–8 975-0128-01-01 Installing the inverter Do not proceed with the installation of your inverter until you have read the section, “Designing Y our Installation” on page 3–1. The more thorough your plann ing, the better your power needs will be met to achieve maximum performance from your i nverter.
Installing the inverter 975-0128-01-01 3–9 • DC fuse(s) as calculated in “Calculating Fuse/Circuit Breaker Size” on page 3–7 and fus e holder(s) • Copper chassis ground cable as calculated.
Installation 3–10 975-0128-01-01 Mounting the Inverter Do not mount the inverter under the hood of your vehi cle. See “Choosing an Appropriate Location” on page 3–4. T o mount the inverter: 1. Make sure the On/Off switch is in the Off position.
Installing the inverter 975-0128-01-01 3–11 A C Connections Y ou can plug your AC loads directly into the receptacles on the inverter front panel. Output po wer to each receptacle is limited by a circuit breaker to 1500 W atts (15 A). Y ou may also make a permanent AC connection via the AC knockout.
Installation 3–12 975-0128-01-01 Grounding Locations Y ou must connect the chassis ground terminal to a grounding poi nt. Follow the installatio n guidelines below . These guideline s assume you are using the code-compliant D C supply cable and fuse sizes indicated in this manual.
Connecting the DC Cables 975-0128-01-01 3–13 Connecting the DC Cables Consult Figure 3-1, “Confi guration for Normal Loads” on pa ge 3–2, or Figure 3-2, “Configuratio n for Heavy Loads” on page 3–2 for additional details that are specific to your installation.
Installation 3–14 975-0128-01-01 4. Install a fuse a nd disconnect switch or bre aker between the inverter and the battery . Ensure that the disco nnec t switch or breaker is turned off before i nstalling. They must be installed in the positive side of the DC circuit, as close as possible to the battery .
Connecting the DC Cables 975-0128-01-01 3–15 6. Connect one connector on the negative cable to the negative terminal on the DC end. Before proceedin g, check that cable polarity is correct, and then connect the other end of the cable to the NEGATIVE (–) terminal on the battery .
