Introduction Thank you for pu rchasing th e Xantrex 30 0 Inverter. The 300 Inverter is part of a f amily of adv anced, high - performance po wer inverters from Xantrex, the leader in the field of high-freq uency inver ter design .
2 Important Safety Information If the 300 Inverter is connected or used incorrectly , hazardous cond itions may be created . Read and s ave this safety information, and pay special atten tio n to all Caution and W arning statements in th e guide and on the inverter itself.
Wa r n i ng ! Risk of fir e or exp losion. The 300 Inverter cont ains componen ts that tend to produce arcs or sparks. T o prevent fire or explosion, do not install the inverter in compartments containing b atteries or flammable materials or in locations that require ignition - protected equipment.
Caution! Risk of damag e to the 300 In verter. Reverse battery polarity (negative connected to positive; positive conn ected to negative) will damage the 300 Inverter, and it will requir e servicing. Damage caused by reverse polarity is not covered by your warr anty .
3 Xantrex 300 Inverter Features This section des cribes the main featur es of the 300 Inverter. Figure 1 s hows th e inverter’ s AC panel. Figure 1 AC Panel on the 3 00 Inverter (Eur opean A C Outle t) ➀ AC Outlet An AC outlet is located o n one end of the inverter .
When the inver ter is connected to a DC power source and the On/Standby switch is on, AC power is available at the outlet. ➂ Power Light The green PWR light is on all the time when the On/Standby switch is on.
AC Outlets Depending on your g eographic l ocation, y our 300 Inverter will have one of the following AC outlets. Figure 2 European AC Outlet Figure 3 British AC Outlet Figure 4 Australian and New Z.
4 Connecting the 300 Inverter This secti on explains how to connect the 300 Inverter. Choosing a Location For the bes t performance, choose a location th at is: • Dry Do not expose the inverter to water drip or spray . • Cool Operate the inverter in a m bient temperatures between 0° C and 40° C (32 ° F and 100° F).
Connecting t he 300 Inverter to DC Power Y ou can connect the inverter to a 1 2 volt DC power s ource usin g: • The cigarett e plug wire assembly ( page 10 ) • The battery clip wire assembly ( p.
Usi ng th e Ciga rette P lug Wi re As sembly Load s unde r 15 0 watts When you are goin g to power loads under 150 watts, use the cigar ette plug wire assemb l y . T o connect the inverter: 1. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals on the inverter .
5. T urn on the inverter ’ s On/Standby sw itch. The PWR light comes on, and AC power is available at the outlet. Note: Y ou may need to turn the vehicle’ s ignition key to the accessory p osition.
T o connect the inverter: 1. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals on the inverter . 2. Place the red rin g connector on the r ed (positive +) DC terminal, and then screw the red nut on until it is snug. Do not over tighten. 3. Attach the red clip to the red (positive +) battery terminal.
5. Place the black ring conn ector on the black ( negative –) DC terminal, and then screw the black nut on until it is snug. Do no t ove r ti gh ten . Note: A spark may occur when you mak e this connection. Th is is normal. 6. Check that bo th clips are securely con nected to the battery terminals.
Figure 6 Hardwiring the 30 0 Inverter to a 12 V olt Bat tery T o hardwire the inverter to the battery: 1. Cut the clips off the cable clip wire assembly . (The Caution! Fir e hazard. The wires in m ost 12 vo lt sockets or p ower outlets are not larg e enough fo r loads greater than 15 0 watts: they will o verheat and present a fire hazard.
wires in this assembly ar e appropriate for loads over 150 watts. The wires in the cigarette plug wire asse mbly are too small: do not use them.) 2. Us ing 3.3m m 2 (12 A WG) wire or heavier , extend the power cord if you need to, to a maximum total len gth of 2 meters (6.
6. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals of the inverter . 7. Place the red rin g connector on the r ed (positive +) DC terminal on the inv erter , and then screw the red nut on until it is snug. Do not over tighten. 8. Fasten the positive terminal (red wire) to the positi ve batter y post.
Disconnecting th e Battery • Before you disc onnect the battery , turn off the AC load, and then turn off th e in-line switch. Replacing t he In-Line Fuse • If you n eed to replace the in-line f u se (see Figu re 6 ), turn off the in-line switch to disconnect the DC power .
5 Operating the 300 Inverter This secti on describes normal op eration as we ll as several problems th at could occu r when you us e the inverter . If you have a prob lem, see “T roubleshooti ng” on page 22 .
that occurs whe n the engine starts may trigger a low volta g e sh ut dow n. • AC Overload Shutdown I f you connec t an AC load rated hi gher tha n 300 watt s or 1.3 amps or that dra ws excessive sur ge power , the 300 Inverter shuts down. The PWR light stays on, and the light comes o n to indicate that the inver ter is overloaded.
Interferenc e With Electronic Equipme nt Most AC products operate with the 300 Inverter as they would wi th househo ld AC pow er with the follow ing exceptions. Buzzing Sou nd Some inexpensive stereo s ystems and “boom boxes” have inadequ ate intern al power suppl y filtering and buzz slightly when powered by the 300 Inverter.
6 Battery Operating T ime The battery operating t ime of the 300 Inverter depen ds on the char ge level of th e battery , battery capacity , and the amou nt of pow e r dr a wn by th e par ticu lar A C lo ad. With a typical vehicle battery an d a 300 watt load, y ou can expect one or mor e hours of operating time.
7 T r oubleshootin g This secti on descri bes problems you may enco unter , the symptoms of each problem, possible causes , and vari ous reme die s. The AC load will not operate; the re d light is on. Sympt om An AC load is plugged in or turned o n, operates for on e to ten sec onds , an d then shut s down .
Sympt om The AC load doe s not operate. The light comes on when the inverter is turned on or when the AC load is turned on or plugged in. The al arm may soun d. Sympt om The AC load runs for more than one minute, the alarm sounds , and the light comes o n.
The AC load will not operate; no inverter lights are on. Sympt om The cigarette lighter works in the lighter socket, but the inverter does not. Sympt om The cigarette lighter does not work in the lighter socket. Possible cause Suggested remedy The contact between the plug and the li ghter socke t or the 12 volt ou tle t is poor.
Measured inver ter output voltage is too low . Sympt om The AC voltmeter reading is 5 to 15 volts too low . Battery operating time is less tha n expected. Sympt om The inverter r uns for a wh ile, and th en the light comes on. The i nverter is cool or warm to touch.
