1 Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Xantrex 300 Inverter. The 300 I nverter is part o f a family of adva nced, high- performance po wer inverters from Xantrex, the leader in the field of high-frequency i nverter design.
2 2 Important Safety Information If the 300 Inverter is connected or us ed incorrectly , hazardous cond itions may be created. Read and save this safety information, and pay special atten tio n to all Caution and W arning statements in the guide and on the inv erter itself.
3 Wa rn i n g! Risk of fir e or explos ion. The 300 Inverter contains componen ts that tend to produce arcs or sparks. T o prevent fire or explosion, do not install the inverter in compartments containing b att eries o r flammable materials or in locations that require ignition - protected equipment.
4 Caution! Risk of damag e to the 300 Inverter. Reverse battery polarity (negative connected to positive; positive conn ected to negative) will damage the 300 Inverter, and i t will require servicing. Damage caused by reverse polarity is not covered by your warranty .
5 3 Xantrex 300 Inverter Features This section des cribes the main features of the 300 Inverter. Figure 1 s hows the inver ter ’ s AC pan el . Figure 1 AC Panel on t he 300 Inverte r (European A C Outlet) ➀ AC Outlet An AC outlet is located o n one end of the inverter .
6 When the inver ter is connected to a DC power source and the On/Standby switch i s on, AC power is available at the outlet. ➂ Power Light The green PWR light is on all the time when the On/Standby switch is on.
7 AC Outlets Depending on your geogr aphic location, you r 300 Inverter will have one of the following AC outlets. Figure 2 European AC Outlet Figure 3 British AC Outlet Figure 4 Australian an d New Z.
8 4 Connecting the 300 Inverter This secti on explains how t o connect the 300 Inverter. Choosing a Location For the bes t performance, choo se a location that is: • Dry Do not expose the inverter to water drip or spray . • Cool Operate the inverter in a mbient temperatures between 0° C and 40° C (32° F and 1 00° F).
9 Connecting t he 300 Inverter to DC Power Y ou can connect the inverter to a 12 volt D C po wer source usin g: • The cigarett e plug wire ass embly ( page 10 ) • The battery clip wire assembly ( page 1 1 ) • A har dwire d conne ction t o the bat tery ( pa ge 13 ) Y our method will depen d on the size of the AC loads you want to po wer .
10 Usi ng the Ci garett e Plug Wire As sembly Load s unde r 15 0 watts When you are going to p ower loads under 150 watts, use t he cigarette plug w ire assembly . T o connect the inverter: 1. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals on the inverter . 2.
11 5. T urn on the inverter ’ s On/Standby switch. The PW R li ght comes on, and AC power is available at the outlet. Note: Y ou may need to turn the vehicle’ s ignition key to the accessory p osition. 6. Plug in the AC load you want to opera t e.
12 T o connect the inverter: 1. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals on the inverter . 2. Place the red ring co nnector on the red (pos i tive +) DC terminal, and then screw the red nut on until it is snug. Do not over tighten. 3. Attach the red clip to the red (positive +) battery terminal.
13 5. Place the black ring conn ector on the black ( negative –) DC terminal, and then screw the black nut on until it is snug. Do not ov er tigh ten. Note: A spark may occur when you make this connection. Th i s is normal. 6. Check that bo t h clips are securely connected to the battery terminals.
14 Figure 6 Hardwiring th e 300 Inve rter to a 12 V olt Battery T o hardwire the inverter to the battery: 1. Cut the clips off the cable clip wire assembly . (The Caution! Fir e hazard. The wires in m ost 12 volt sockets o r power outlets are not larg e enough for loads greater th an 150 watts: they will o verheat an d presen t a fi re hazard.

16 6. Remove the nuts from the DC terminals of the inverter . 7. Place the red ring co nnector on the red (pos i tive +) DC terminal on the inv erter, and then screw the red nut o n until it is snug. Do not over tighten. 8. Fasten the positive terminal (red wire) to th e positi ve batter y post.
17 Disconnecting th e Batter y • Before you disc onnect the battery , turn off the AC load, and then turn off th e in-line switch. Replacing t he In-Line Fuse • If you n eed to replace the in-line fuse (s ee Figure 6 ), turn off the in-line switch to disconnect the DC power .
18 5 Operating the 300 Inverter This secti on describes no rmal operation as wel l as several problems th at could occur when you use the inverter . If you have a prob lem, see “T roubleshooti ng” on page 22 .
19 that occurs whe n the engine starts may trigger a low volta g e shut do wn. • AC Overload Shutdown If you connec t an AC load rated hi gher than 300 wa tts or 1.3 amps or that dra ws excessive sur ge power , the 300 Inverter shuts down. The PWR light stays on, and t he light comes on to indicate that the inver t er is overloaded.
20 Interferenc e With Electronic Equipment Most AC products operate with the 300 Inverter as they would wi th household A C power with the fo llowing exceptions. Buzzing Sou nd Some inexpe nsive stereo systems and “boom boxes” have inadequ ate internal power supply filtering and buzz slightly when powered by the 300 I nverter.
21 6 Battery Operating T ime The battery operating time of t he 300 Invert er depends on the char ge level of the battery , battery capacity , and the amou nt of po wer dr a wn by t he par ticul a r AC lo ad. W it h a typical vehicle battery an d a 300 watt load, you ca n expect one or mor e hours of op erating time.
22 7 T r oubleshooting This secti on describes pro blems you may encount er , the symptoms of each problem, poss ible causes, and various reme dies. The AC load will not operate; the re d light is on. Sympt om An AC load is plugged in or turned o n, operates for on e to te n se conds , and the n shut s do wn.
23 Sympt om The AC load does not operate. The light comes on when the inverter is turned on or wh en the AC load is t urned on or pl ugged in. The alarm may sound. Sympt om The AC load runs for more th an one minute, the alarm sounds , and the light co mes on.
24 The AC load will not operate; no inverter lights are on. Sympt om The cigarette lighter works in the lighter socket, but the inverter does not. Sympt om The cigarette lighter does not work in the lighter socket. Possible cause Suggested remedy The contact between the pl ug and the li ghter socket or th e 12 volt ou tlet is po or .
25 Measured inver ter output voltage is too low . Sympt om The AC voltmeter reading is 5 to 1 5 volts too low . Battery operating time is less than expected. Sympt om The inver ter r uns for a while, and then th e light comes on. The inverter i s cool or warm to touch.
26 8 W arranty Information What Does This W arranty Co ver? Xantrex manuf actures its products from parts and components that are new or equivalent to new , in accordance with indu stry standard practices. This warran ty co vers an y d efects in wor kmansh ip or ma t e rials.

28 Y ou must obtain a Return Material Authorizatio n (RMA) number fro m Xantrex before returning a pro duct directly to Xantre x. Do not return a product to Xant rex without firs t obtai ning an RMA nu mber .
29 T o return your 300 Inverter for out-o f-warranty service, contact Xantrex cust omer service for a Return Mat erial Authorization (RMA) number , and follow the other steps outlined in “T o Xant rex” on pag e 27 . Options for payment, such as credit card or money order , will be ex plained by the customer service r epresentative.
