I NSTALLATION 5 I NSTALLATION Installation is a quick, four-step process: 1. Assemble the scanner 2. Install the software 3. Connect and pow er on the scanner 4.

Carefully re move the pr otective foam from the ADF co ver release, then press the r elease and open the automatic document fe eder cover .
S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 5. Insert the pins on each s ide of the output tray into the holes on the scanner . 6. F lip open the extension on the output tray so it is fully extended.

S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 3. On the installation menu, select Install ScanSoft P aperP ort . 4. At the P aperP ort 9.0 W elcome window , click Ne x t . Installing P aperP ort 9.0 will uninstall any existing versions of P aperP or t and install P aperP ort 9.

At the P roduct Registration window , do one of the following: ■ Sel ec t Regi ste r o nli ne , then click OK and follow the registration instructions. ■ Sel ec t Print r egistration form , then click OK an d follow the instructions to complete and print the r egistration form.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 11 The W elcome to the OneT ouch 4.0 Setup Wizar d opens. 12. Click Nex t . 13. On the V isioneer License Agr eement windo w , read the license agreement.
12 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The next window lists the choices of the drivers that you can install for your scanner . 14. Choose the option you want. ■ Full I nstall (OneT ouch, TW AIN and ISIS) —This is the re co m m e n de d installation.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 ■ TW AIN only —T he TW AIN driver is in sta lled. The OneT ouch 4.0 M onitor will not run and you cannot use the OneT ouch features. Y ou can use the Visioneer S trobe XP 470 TW AIN driver , and scan from other applications with a TW AIN interface.
14 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The Color S pace setting sets the gamma value for the scanner so scanned items look good on your monitor . Gamma controls the brightness of the midtones of co lors. This setting can be changed later on as you are scanning.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 15 T O I NSTALL A NOTHER D RIVER Before y ou can install another driver for your scanner , you must remov e the currently installed driver first. Th en the new driver can be installed. 1. Remo ve the scanner from the syst em.

To c o n n e c t y o u r V i s i o n e e r Str obe XP 470 scanner: 1. Plug the pow er supply into the power port on the scanner .
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE 17 3. T urn on the pow er switch, located on the back of the scanner to the left of the power port. The status light comes on and flashe s indicating that the scanner is receiving po wer . N ow proceed to the next section, “S tep 4: Connect the USB Cable.
18 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE If you ar e using Windows XP , Service P ack 1, and have plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.1 port, an information bubble may open explaining that “ A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non- HI-SPEED USB hub ”.
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE 19 2. When you ’ re certain that the software has completely loaded, r eturn to the “Complete the installation by connecting your har dware ” window and click OK to complete the installation process. Y ou can also click More to see a quick overvi ew about acce ssing and navigating the OneT ouch Button P anel.

L OAD AND S CAN D OCUMENTS 25 Scanning When you press either the Simplex or D uplex button, documents are scanned using the scan settings in dicated by the LED number . The scanned images are then se nt to a software application (known as the Destination Application) on your computer .
26 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. Load the documents with their tops into the automatic document feeder . F or Simplex (one-sided) scans, load the documents face down . F or Duplex (two-sided) scans, the documents can be face up or down because both sides ar e scanned.
L OAD AND S CAN D OCUMENTS 27 4. T o scan a one-sided document, press the Simpl ex button. T o scan a two-sided document, press the Dupl ex button. A scan progress window opens and then a thumbnail of the scanned image appears in the Destination Ap plication.

T o check the scan settings before scanning, pr ess, hold do wn, and then release, eit her the Si mp le x or Dupl ex button. The OneT ouch Button P anel appears with the description of the selected settings.

Wh en the process finishes, the scanned images a ppear in the Dest ination A pplication, just a s if you scanned with the Simplex or D uplex scanner buttons.

The P roperties window for that button also appears. 4. T o cycle through the nine buttons, click the arrows on the right side of the panel.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 35 C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS Each OneT ouch button configuration consists of a Destination Application , a Scan Configuration , and a Docum ent Format . The OneT ouch P roperties window is where you select these three e lements for a button.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 37 The settings on the P roperties window are: Select Destination —The list of applications that can open to display the scanned image for the selected button. T o configure the list of available applications, click the Option s tab at the top of the dialog box and select the desir ed options.

The formats ar e based on the type of destination application you select. This example sho ws the formats that apply to the P aperP or t Desktop.

Each button has its own settings . So, as you click the arrows to cy cle through the buttons, the available settings on the windo w change to show them for each button.
40 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 5. Click OK, or if you want to ke ep the window open and work with other features, click Apply . N ow when y ou press or click a scanner button, the document is scanned using the newly configured settings for that button.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 41 P APER P ORT P ROPERTIE S These properties apply to P aperP ort, and are for designating the folder to receiv e your scanned items. 1. Select the P aperP or t folder where y ou want the file of the scanned image to be located.
42 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T EXT D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to Microsoft W ord, E xcel, A dobe Reader , and the other applications indicated by th eir icons in the list. The properties apply to the OCR settings for the applicat ions.

44 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE I MAGE D OCUMENTS P ROPERTIES These properties apply to ScanSoft OmniP age P ro 12 that you received with your scanner , plus Microsoft P aint and other image processing applications. 1. Click in the Color document handling settings boxes for the options you want.

46 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Documents ar e put into folders by month, week, or typ e — F olders are created based on your selection (month, week, or type) and the scanned documents ar e saved in those folders. N ew folders are cr eated for each month and week so you can keep track of when you scanned t he documents.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 47 E M AIL P ROPERTIES These properties apply to eMail applications so you can specify the folder for documents that you wi ll attach to an eMail message.

If you are using America On line (AOL) on yo ur computer , and the folder name for AOL is incorrect, click the Bro wse button and find the correct AOL folder . N ormally the folder that A OL uses to store attachments will be listed in the box.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 49 S ELECTING P AGE F ORMAT O PTIONS The P age F ormat options that you sele ct determines the file format of the scanned document. Appropriate page format options and file types are available for the type of D estination Application select ed for the button.
50 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The PDF format is often used to cr eate images of text pages. Y ou may want to select PDF as the page format when scanning text pages that do not require OCR processing or othe r processing. The PDF format is also used to put multi-page docume nts on w eb sites as pdf-r eadable files.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 51 T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option al so selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Ther efore, when you scan a document with the text format selected, the text portions of the doc ument are automatically c onverted to editable text.
52 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o select a file type for the text format: 1. Sele ct the Destina tion Applic ation. 2. Right-cl ick on the tex t format icon . A menu appears. The following figure sho ws samples for different formats.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 53 Comma Delimited —The .csv file format; used for database or spreadsheet data with fie lds separated by commas. When the document is converted into editable text by the OCR software , the fields are main tained so you can c opy and paste them to a database or spreadsheet application.
54 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE R ENAMING A O NE T OUCH B UTTON The OneT ouch buttons have names that identify their pre-set functions, such as OCR and PDF , bu t you can edit the names. T o change the button names: 1. Open the OneT ouch P roperties windo w .

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 61 7. Click the P age Settings tab to select page settings. Siz e —Click St a n d a rd , cl ick the menu arrow and choose a page size from the list, or click Cu s t o m and enter the horizontal and vert ical page dimensions in the boxes.
62 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE at too great an angle, the image may not scan correctly . In that case, re-scan the page using the pa per guides to feed the paper in straight.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 63 ■ Color F ilter —Color filter is the ability of yo ur scanner to automatically remo ve a color from a scan ned item. F o r example, if you are scanning a let ter with a red watermar k, you can choose to filter out the red so the scanne d letter just shows the text and not the red watermar k.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 65 Maintain aspect ratio —The aspect ratio is the length-to-width relationship of the image ’ s dimens ions. Select this option so the image ’ s relative proportions r emain constant.
66 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 1. Click on the Storage Opti ons tab. 2. Click the S torage Layout opt ions you want. All documents are in the root —The scanned documents ar e saved in the root of the folder spec ified in the St orage Location.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 67 E DITING OR D ELETING S CAN C ONFIGURATIONS T o edit or delete a scan configuration: 1. Open the OneT ouch P roperties windo w . 2. Select the s can configuration you want to edit or delete. 3. T o delete the configuration, click the Delete button.
68 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. T o edit the configuration, click the Edit button. The Scan Configuration P roperties dialog box opens for that configuration. T o edit or delete a configuration, it must first be unlocked. Click the Lock icon to unlock the conf iguration.

Right-click on Configure Befor e Scan and choose an interface to use for configuring before scanning. TW AIN —The B asic Interface or A dvanced I nterface appears for you to configur e the scanning.
70 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is like a printer in reverse. Instead of printing what ’ s on the scr een onto paper , OCR converts text and numbers on a scanned page into editable text and numbers.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 71 ■ T o scan from the OneT ouch Button P anel, click the OneT ouch icon in the Windows system T ray , click the arro ws to see Button 6, then click Button 6. ■ T o scan from the OneT ouch Pr operties window , select a Destination Application that has one of the T ext formats.
72 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o select OmniP age OCR options: 1. Open the OneT ouch P roperties windo w . 2. U sing the arro ws, choose a button that has Destination Applications that use the text format as the ir file type.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 73 6. Choose the options you want from the OCR window . Languages in Document —Select the language(s) in the documents to be scanned. These are the languages that will be recognized during the OCR process. F or faster and more r eliable language recognition, s elect only the lang uages in the document.
74 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE P rof essional D ictionar ies —These are legal and medical dictionaries containing highly specialized words and phrases. The options are: Dutch Leg al, Dutch Me dical, English Le gal, English M edical, Fr e n c h L e g a l , Fr e n c h M e d i c a l , German Legal, and German M edical.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 75 documents you plan to scan. T o add new fonts to that list, select a font in the Fo n t s o n S y s t e m list and click Add . Note that when you select a font, a sample appears in the text box so you can compare it with the fonts in your document to see if that’ s the right font.
76 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Retain text and background color —If y our document contains colored text or backgrounds, select this option to hav e them detected and displayed in the text editing application y ou have selected.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 77 Automatic —Choose this option to let the OCR process determine the layout of the pages . It is the faste st type of format processing.
78 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Retain F onts and P aragraphs (RFP) —This output format retains the font and para graph styling, includin g graphics and table s without columnized text. This output format is available for nearly all file types.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 79 S CANNING WITH S PDF OR N PDF AND S EARCHING FOR T EXT Searchable PDF (sPDF) and N ormal PDF (nPDF) are special forms of an Adobe PDF file. sPDF converts scanned text into the PDF format with text search and OCR capabilities.

Click Apply or OK . 8. N ow scan with that button and the scanned document will be in the sPDF or nPDF format that was selected for the button.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 81 11. F rom th e Adobe Acrobat Edi t menu choose Fin d . The F ind dialog box appears. 12. Enter the text you want to find, and click the Fi n d button. See the Adobe A crobat user manual for more about finding text in a PDF file, or about editing PDF text.
82 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CAN AND B URN TO A CD If you have a CD burner attached to your computer , you can scan directly fr om your Visioneer S trobe XP 470 scanner onto a CD. This feature is available only on computers running Windows XP .
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 83 7. N ow s tart scanning using the button y ou selected to use t o scan and burn to CD. When scanning is finished, a bubb le message on the screen tells y ou that files are waiting t o be burned to the CD.

The scanner will feed in t he first page, but will then stop until you select the application to use.

86 V ISIONEER S TROBE XP 470 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE C REATING AN HTML W EB P AGE FROM Y OUR S CANNED D OCUMENTS If you scan a document, whether a si ngle page or multiple pages, you can have the pages converted direct ly to html formatted pages for posting directly to y our web site.
