During installation, a message tells y ou to connect the scanner to the computer . 4. F ollow the steps in the next section to connect the scanner.
I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT 7 T o connect the O neT ouch scanner to a USB por t: 1. Plug one end of the USB cable into an av ailable USB por t. Some newer computers also hav e keyboards with USB por ts. Y ou can plug the scanner into the keyboar d instead of the USB por t on the computer .
8 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 5. T urn the scanner over to see the locking tab on the bottom. Slide the locking tab to the unlocked position. 6. Plug the power adapter into an AC (wall) outlet. The following diagram shows the scanner connected to a computer.
I NSTALLING TO A USB P ORT 9 7. T urn on power to the scanner . The amber light comes on indicating the scanner is receiving power . Y our computer r ecognizes that a scanner has been plugged into the USB port and automatically loads the appr opriate software from the CD to run the scanner .

STEP 1: C ONNECTING TO A P ARALLEL P ORT The OneT ouch scanner connects to any av ailable parallel (LPT ) port on the back of your computer .
I NSTALLING TO A P ARALLEL P ORT 11 5. Plug the other end of the scanner cable into the parallel por t on the back of your computer . On some older computers the serial por t and parallel port both have 25-pin connectors that fi t the scanner cable. P lease make sure you plug the scanner cable into a parallel por t.

C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 15 C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER The OneT ouch scanner softwar e adds the scanner icon to the Windows taskbar (at the bottom right corner of the computer scr een). If the scanner is properly connected , the scanner icon looks like the one in this figure.

C HECKING O UT Y OUR S CANNER 17 I F THE S CANNER I S N OT P ROPERLY C ONNECTED If the scanner icon on the Windows taskbar has a red “X” through it , the scanner is not properly connected. Check for one of these possible problems: • Is a cable loose or not plugged in securely? Inspect all cable connections.
18 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE T o connect the scanner: 1. After checking for all the above problems, right-click the scanner icon with the red X over it. The shortcut menu appears. 2. Choose Connect from the shor tcut menu.
T HREE W AYS TO S CAN 19 Part 2: Scanning T HREE W AYS TO S CAN Y ou can scan items b y pressing a OneT ouch button, by clicking a button on the screen, or from the P aperP ort software (or other T wain software). • Scan with the Scanner Buttons P ress a button on the scanner’ s front panel.

26 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Select F ormat and P age(s) —a set of options for selecting a format for the scanned image and whether to scan a single page or multiple pages. The formats are bitmap, JPEG, and P aperP or t.
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 27 S ELECTING N EW O PTIONS FOR THE B UTTONS Y ou can select a ne w destination application, confi guration, and image format for a scanner button to optimiz e it for the type of scanning y ou want to do. Y ou use the Confi guration dialog box to select ne w options.
28 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 3. Click a selection in the Select Confi guration list to choose a ne w scan configuration for the selected scanner button. The configurations in the list ar e preset for the application you select in the application list.
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 29 A DJUSTING S CAN S ETTINGS AND P AGE S ETTINGS When scanning using a confi guration that you created yourself, you can adjust that configuration ’ s scan settings and page settings. For example, if the scanned image is too dar k, you can adjust the brightness of the scan setting.
30 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 2. In the Select Configuration list, click the confi guration that you want to adjust. F or example, the follo wing figure shows a configuration named S pecial Scan for Dark Print (which you would have created earlier).
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 31 4. Adjust the scan settings that you want. Mode —S elect Black/White to scan in black and white. F or example, letters and memos ar e usually scanned in black and white. Select Grayscale to scan items such as documents containing drawings or black and white photographs.
32 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE 5. Click the P age Settings tab to adjust the scan page settings. P age Size —Choose a page size from the dr op-down list. The outlines on the picture represent the various page siz es. Clicking one of those outlines also selects it as the page siz e for the scan.
A BOUT THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 33 The scanning may slow down a bit when this option is selected. Y ou don ’ t need to select this option when scanning photographs. The DeScreen setting does not apply to the Black/White mode. Gamma —Drag the slider to improve how the colors in a scanned image look on your monitor .

Please see “ About JPEG Compression ” on page 35 for information about the JPEG settings. Enable hardwar e compression ( JPEG) —Click to make the JPEG compression options active.

The new confi guration and its adjusted settings no w apply to the button whose tab is selected at the top of the Confi guration dialog box. A BOUT JPEG C OMPRESSION Scanned graphics, photos, and other images can sometimes pr oduce large files.
36 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S ETTING P REFERENCES The preferences apply to each button and to the scanner. T o set preferences: 1. On the Configuration dialog bo x, select the tab for a button to set its preferences. 2.

B y selecting the Show All Destinations option as the preference for the email button, all the other types of applications ar e included in the list of email destination applications.

S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 39 S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE Instead of using a scanner button, you can scan dir ectly from the P aperP or t software. This is par ticularly helpful when y ou ’ re using P aperP or t to file and save your scanned items.
40 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE S CANNING AN I TEM WITH THE T WAIN B UTTON The following steps explain how to scan an item using the T wain button in the P aperP or t software. Y ou can scan many types of items, fr om small business cards to A4-sized pages.
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 41 4. Select the options that you want for the scan. Scan P age For —S elect one of these preset options if y ou want to use it for scanning. These options are optimized for the various uses of scanned images, such as scanning for editing text or scanning in color .
42 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE Mode —Choose a scan mode from the drop-down menu to select the mode for scanning . The symbols next to the menu options indicate black and white, grayscale, or color. Res —This is the resolution setting for the scan in dots-per-inch (dpi).
S CANNING FROM THE P APER P ORT S OFTWARE 43 8. When you ’ re satisfied with the image settings, click the Scan button. The scanner now re-scans the item and displays the fi nal image as a thumbnail on the PaperP ort Desktop. The small icon in the lo wer left corner of the thumbnail indicates the sample photo was scanned as a bitmap image.
44 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A DJUSTING THE B RIGHTNESS AND C ONTRAST Sometimes an item is scanned with the brightness and contrast set to be too light or too dark. For example, a note written with a light pencil may need to be scanned dar ker to improve legibility .

46 V ISIONEER O NE T OUCH 8600 S CANNER I NSTALLATION G UIDE A BOUT THE P REDEFINED S CAN S ETTINGS IN P APER P ORT Selecting the proper scan setting before final scanning pr ovides the best results for a scanned item. The scan setting determines the sharpness of the item and the number of possible shades of gray or color.
C LEANING THE S CANNER G LASS 47 4. Drag the Contrast slider to the left to decr ease the contrast or to the right to increase the contrast.
