2 Introduction Thank you for choosing the Uniden EXAI 6980 cordless telephone. This phone is designed to exacting standards that provide reliability , long life and outstanding performance. Note: Some illustrations in this manual may differ from the actual unit for explanation purposes.

4 Read this first This cordless telephone must be set up before use. Follow these steps; Step 1 (page 5) Unpack the telephone and accessories. Step 2 (page 6 to 8) Next, choose the best location to set up the base unit. Step 3 (page 9 to10) Then, insert the battery pack into the handset.
5 Step 1 Checking the package contents Make sure you have received the following items in the package. If any of these items are missing or damaged, contact the Uniden Parts Department (see below).
6 Step 2 Setting up the base unit Do the following steps. • Choose the best location • Connect the base unit • Choose the dialing mode Choose the best location Before choosing a location for your new phone, read the INST ALLA TION CONSIDERA TIONS included in the PRECAUTIONS AND IMPORT ANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS brochure.
7 Step 2 (continued) Connect the base unit If you want to install the base unit on the wall, see page 47. 1 Connect the telephone line cord to the TEL LINE jack and to a telephone outlet. Note Until the handset battery is fully charged, you can only answer incoming calls at the base unit.
8 Step 2 (continued) Notes • Use only the supplied AD-420 AC adapter . Do not use any other AC adapter . • Place the base unit close to the AC outlet so that you can unplug the AC adapter easily . T ips • If your telephone outlet isn't modular , contact your telephone company for assistance.
9 Step 3 Preparing the battery pack Charge the battery pack for 12-15 hours before connecting the phone line. 1 Press and slide the battery compartment cover toward the bottom of the unit. 2 Connect the battery pack connector with the correct polarity (black and red wires), then insert the battery pack into the battery compartment.
10 Step 3 (continued) Battery use time (per charge) From fully charged • Seven hours continuous use. • Seven days when the handset is in the standby mode. When the battery charge becomes low When the voltage of battery pack is very low and needs to be charged, the phone eliminates functions to save power .
11 Step 4 Setting Caller ID options There are three Caller ID options, Auto T alk, CIDCW (Caller ID with Call Waiting), and Area Code. 1 In the standby mode, press and hold until a tone sounds and the Caller ID option screen appears. 2 Press or to move the pointer to the item that is to be set.
12 Step 4 (continued) Entering your area code When you use this phone for the first time, or move to an area that has a different area code, you must enter your area code. This is necessary because the phone must distinguish local or long distance calls to properly dial calls from the Caller ID message list.
13 Making calls Dialing from standby 1 Dial the phone number . (up to 32 digits.) Example: Enter 817-858-3300 2 Press . “ Talk ” flashes on the display . Then the volume setting appears for a few seconds. Example: V olume level “ High ” 3 The number is dialed.
14 Making calls (continued) Dialing from talk mode 1 Pick up the handset. 2 Press . “ Talk ” and the volume setting appear on the display . 3 Dial the phone number . After about 5 seconds, the call-time display appears. Example: Enter 817-858-3300 4 T o hang up, press or place the handset on the base .
15 Making calls (continued) Redialing The redial key redials the last number dialed. The redialed number can be up to 32 digits long. Redialing from standby 1 Press . The phone number that was last dialed appears on the display . 2 Press . “ Talk ” and the volume setting appear on the display .
16 Receiving calls 1 Phone rings. 2 P re ss . “ Talk ” and the volume setting appear on the display . 3 T o hang up, press or place the handset on the base.
17 Handset ringer tone In the standby mode, press or . Each time or is pressed, the ringer tone setting changes and the selected ringer tone sounds for 2 seconds. Handset earpiece volume During a telephone call, pressing or will change the earpiece volume of the handset.
18 Base ringer switch T o turn off the ringer , set the ringer switch to the off position. This switch turns the base ringer on or off. Base speaker volume T o control the speaker volume of the base, adjust the and button as desired. Receiving calls (continued) Receiving a call from the base 1 The base rings.
19 Memory storing Y ou can store up to 10 phone numbers in the dial memory . Storing phone numbers and names 1 Press and hold until a tone sounds and “ Memory Store ” is displayed. 2 Press or to scroll to the memory location where you would like to store the number .
20 4 Use the , , , , or keys to enter the name. The name cannot exceed 16 characters. • Use the and key to scroll through the characters. • Use the and to move the cursor to the desired position. • Use the key to delete characters as needed. 5 Press .
21 Memory dialing Making calls with memory dialing Dialing from standby 1 Press . The handset displays your programmed memory locations. 2 Press the and keys to select the memory location you would like to dial. For example if the key is pressed once, the pointer moves down to the next memory location number .
22 1 Press . " Talk " and the volume setting appear on the display . 2 Press . 3 Press the number keypad to select the memory location of the desired phone number .
23 Memory editing Editing a stored name and/or phone number 1 Press and hold until a tone sounds and “ Memory Store ” is displayed. 2 Press the or keys or number keypad to select the memory location you would like to edit. 3 Press . The following screen appears with the memory location number that you have selected in the display .
24 Memory editing (continued) 7 Use the number keypad, , , , or key to edit the phone number . The phone number cannot exceed 16 digits. (See page 20.) When the phone number is not to be edited, skip this step. 8 Press . The handset beeps and displays the confirmation screen.
25 4 Press to move the pointer down to “ Delete Memory ” . 5 Press . The following confirmation screen appears. 6 Press to move the pointer to “ Yes ” .
26 Using the Page Feature T o locate the handset (while it ’ s off the base) 1 Press on the base. 2 The handset beeps for 60 seconds. 3 Press any key except on the handset to cancel the page.
27 Caller ID Features When the telephone rings 1 When phone rings, the status LED blinks. On the second ring, the display shows the caller ’ s phone number , along with the date and time. The incoming call information is stored. If the Caller ID service includes the caller ’ s name, it appears on the display (up to 16 letters).
28 Caller ID Features (continued) V iewing the Caller ID Message list The Caller ID list stores information for up to 30 incoming calls - even unanswered calls. Note If a call comes in via a telephone system that does not offer Caller ID service, no information is stored.
29 Caller ID Features (continued) Deleting information from the Caller ID list The EXAI 6980 stores up to 30 Caller ID messages. If more new calls are received, messages stored in the list are deleted beginning with the oldest message in the list. Data can also be deleted manually .
30 Caller ID Features (continued) Deleting all Caller ID names/numbers 1 Press . 2 Press , while the summary screen is displayed. 3 Press or to select “ Yes ” or “ No ” . 4 Press or . When the pointer is at “ Yes ” : A tone sounds and all stored Caller ID messages are deleted.
31 Caller ID Features (continued) Calling a party from the Caller ID list Y ou can place a call from the Caller ID list. The EXAI 6980 stores up to 30 messages. 1 Press . 2 P re ss or to se le ct th e phone number that you want to dial. (See page 28.) 3 Press .
32 Caller ID Features (continued) Storing Caller ID messages in Memory Messages shown in the Caller ID list can be stored for memory dialing. Using the incoming call information (i.e., Caller ID list), the phone number of the party on the Caller ID list can be stored in memory dialing.
33 Caller ID Features (continued) Using “ Caller ID with call waiting ” service “ Caller ID ” and “ Call waiting ” are separate services. CIDCW (Caller ID on Call Waiting) performs the same as regular Caller ID on a call waiting number .
34 Using the answering machine Setting the clock The answering machine ’ s clock starts when the AC adapter cord is plugged in. 1 Press until you hear the long beep. 2 First set the day by pressing o r . When the number appears on the LED display , press .
35 Using the answering machine (continued) 1 Press and hold on the base until you hear the long beep. Then, begin speaking towards the microphone. 2 When you finish speaking, press o r . The greeting you just recorded will automatically b e played back.
36 Using the answering machine (continued) 1 Press to change the status from on to off. The LED display indicates the change. 2 When the unit is turned on, it initializes by playing the greeting. If you want to stop playing, press . T urning the answering machine on and off Check the LED display to see if the answering machine is on or off.
37 1 : 1 minute 4 : 4 minutes ANN : Announce only Setting maximum recording time for incoming messages Y ou can select the maximum recording time by sliding the REC TIME switch on the base unit to one of the following positions: Note If you set the switch to ANN , a prerecorded greeting plays, and no message will be accepted.
38 Using the answering machine (continued) 1 The number on the display blinks to indicate that there are new messages received. 2 Press to hear the messages. They will be played in the order they were received. Playing recorded messages Y ou can listen to the message at the base unit.
39 Using the answering machine (continued) Deleting recorded messages T o delete individual messages , press during playback, immediately after , or before the next message begins. Y ou will hear a confirmation tone when the deletion is completed. T o delete all messages , first, make sure all new messages are played.
40 Using the answering machine (continued) 1 Press and hold for approximately 1 second. 2 After a long beep, turn to the micro- phone and begin speaking. Be sure to keep within 10 inches of the microphone while recording. 3 When you have finished the memo, press again, or press .
41 Using the answering machine (continued) 1 During the conversation, press and hold on the base unit approximately 1 second. Recording starts automatically .
42 Selecting a PIN code T o play your messages from a remote location, you will need to enter a two-digit Personal Identification Number (PIN) code (00-99). T o select a PIN, perform the following steps: 1 On the base, press and hold . A beep sounds, and the LED displays ‚‚ .
1 Call your telephone number . 2 While the greeting message plays, press # and your PIN code. If the answering machine is off, let it ring 10 times until the greeting message plays. Then, press # and your PIN code. 3 The answering system announces the time and day stamp and the number of mes- sages stored in memory .
44 Using the answering machine (continued) 1 Call your telephone number . 2 During the outgoing message playback, press # followed by your PIN code. 3 The answering system begins announcing the time and day stamp. 4 Press # then while the system announces the time and day stamp.
45 Additional information 3-way conversation The Uniden EXAI 6980 permits 3-way conversations between the handset, base, and outside line. When speaking on the handset 1 Press on the base to join the 3-way conversation. 2 Press on the base to hang up.
46 Additional information (continued) Changing the digital security code The digital security code is an identification code used to connect the handset and the base unit. Normally , setting the code is not necessary . The first time you charge your handset, the security code is automatically set.
1 Snap the wall mount adapter into the notches on the base. 2 Plug the telephone line cord to the TEL LINE jack and the AC adapter to the DC IN 9V jack. 3 Plug the telephone line cord into the telephone outlet. 4 Place the AC adapter cord inside the molded wiring channel.
48 Additional information (continued) Direct wall plate mounting If you don't have a standard wall plate, you can mount your phone directly to the wall. Before doing this, consider the following: • A void electrical cables, pipes, or other items behind the mounting location.
49 Additional information (continued) Installing the beltclip T o attach the beltclip Insert the beltclip into the holes on each side of the handset. Press down until it clicks. T o remove the beltclip Pull both sides of the beltclip to release the tabs from the holes.
50 Additional information (continued) Note on power sources Battery replacement and handling When the operating time becomes short, even after a battery is recharged, please replace the battery . With normal usage, your battery should last about one year .
51 Additional information (continued) T roubleshooting If your phone is not performing to your expectations, please try these simple steps first. Symptom The status light won't come on when the handset is placed in the base unit. The audio sounds weak and/or scratchy .
52 Additional information (continued) Symptom The answering system does not work. The answering system does not answer calls. Messages are incomplete. After a power failure, the greeting is deleted. No sound on the base unit speaker during call monitoring or message playback.
