Lightning can pass through your household wiri ng and da mage any de vice connected to it. Thi s phone is no exception. Warning: Please do no t attempt to unplug any applian ce during an elect rical storm.
Ins tallat ion Selecting a Location Before choosing a location fo r your new phone, there are some impo rtant guide lines you shoul d consider: • The location sh ould be close to both a phone ja ck and continuous po wer outlet. Note: A conti nuous power outlet is an AC outlet which does not have a switch to interrupt its power.
Connecting the Telepho ne Cords Consider these safet y guidelines befo re connecting the telep hone cords: CAUTIO N: • Never install telep hone wiring during a lightnin g storm. • Never touch un insulate d telepho ne wires or te rminals unless th e telepho ne line has been disconnected.
Desk or Tableto p Instal lation 1. Place the Base on a desk or tabletop. 2. Plug one en d of th e long telep hone cord into the TEL LINE jack on the Base Unit.
4. Place the AC Adapter cord around the strain relief. 5. Plug the other end of the telephone cord into the telephone ja ck on the wall. 6. Plug the AC Adapte r into a standard 120V AC wall outlet. Note: Do not use an outlet contro lled by a wall switch.
Wall Installati on Standard Wall Plate Mounting These phones are designed to be mounted on a standard AT&T or GTE wall plate. 1. Plug one end of the short tel ephone cord into the TEL LINE jack on the Base Unit. 2. Place the telep hone cord inside the molded chann el on the bottom of the Base Unit.
4. Place the AC Adapter cord inside the molded channel. 5. Plug the telepho ne cord into the modular jack on the wall. Place the Base Unit on th e posts of the wall plate and push down until it’s firmly seated. 6. Plug the AC Adapte r into a standard 120V AC wall outlet.
Direct Wall Mounting If you do not have a standard wall pl ate, you can mount your phone directly on a wall . Before mounting your phone, consider th e following: • Select a location awa y from electrical cables, pipes, or ot her items behind the mountin g location that could cause a hazard when inserting screws into th e wall.
4. Plug the AC Adapte r cord into the 9V DC input jack on the Base Unit. 5. Place the AC Adapter cord inside the molded channel. 6. Place the Base Unit on th e screws and push down until it’s firmly seate d. 7. Plug the other end of the telephone line cord int o the wall jack.
8. Plug the AC Adapte r into a standard 120V AC wall outlet. Note: Do not use an outlet contro lled by a wall switch. Use only the Unid en AC Adapter suppli ed with this phone. Setting the Handset Retainer The Handset Retain er holds the Handset in pla ce if your phone is mounted on a wall.

S e t t i n gU pY o u rP h o n e Extendin g the Base Unit Antenna Before using your phone, be sure to raise the antenna to th e vertical position. Installing the Handset Battery Pack 1. Press in on the Battery Cover Release. 2. Slide the batte ry compartment cover down .
3. Align the plastic connector of the Nickel-Cadmium battery pack with its so cket and plug it in. Note: The black lead will be on the lef t when the plug is properly aligned. 4. Place the battery pack inside the battery compart ment, and slide the battery cover back on.
Cleaning the Battery Contacts To maintain a good charge, it is importa nt to clean all charging contacts on th e Handset and Base Unit about once a month.
Charging the Battery Pack Initial Battery Charging The rechargeable Nickel-Cadmiu m battery pack must be fu lly charged befo re using your phone for th e first time. We recommend that the batte ry pack charge for approximately 15-20 hours, with out interruptio n, before plugging the phone line int o your new phone.
If the Battery icon begin s to fla sh, the ph one is programmed to eliminate it s function s to save powe r. The ta ble below describes what to do to return your phone to normal operation. DURING A CALL IN STANDBY MODE Only the A but ton operates. None of the butt ons will operate.
Handset Volume Control s Please refer to the foldout in front of your operating guide for key positions. To adjust the ringer volume of your Handset, press volume/cancel until you hear the desired ringer to ne and volume. To adjust the receiver volume, press volume/cancel while you are on a call.
To adjust the Base speaker volume, press the volume control buttons to achieve the desired setting. Automatic Digital Code Secur ity To avoid unautho rized calls on your phone, a Digi tal Code fe ature was added to all DXAI685 phones. This Digital Code is shared only bet ween the Handset and Base Uni t.
2. After the Handset stops beepi ng, remove it from the Base Unit. 3. Wait 5 seconds then place the Handset on the Base Unit. 4. The Battery icon will blink to indicate that the Digital Security Code is set to one of the more than 65,000 codes.
If the Base Unit loses power while th e Handset is off the Base, the Digital Cod e may be erased. When this happens, the Handse t will not function. To re establish communicatio n between the Handset and Base Unit : 1. Restore power to the Base Uni t.
Entering the Local Area Code Please refer to the foldout in front of your operating guide for key positions. You must enter your local area code for the Caller ID redia l features to work properly. To enter your local area code: 1. Remove the Handset from the Base Unit.
Setting Caller ID on Call Waiting Note: You must subscribe to Caller ID on Call Waiting fr om your local phon e service to use this fe ature. You can set your DXAI685 phone to display infor mation about calls that generate a call waiting tone whi le you are on a call.

Using Yo ur Phone Please refer to the foldout in front of your operating guide for key positions. Making Calls 1. Remove the Handset from the Base Unit. 2. Dial the number you wish to cal l. For example, 123 - 4567 3. If you entered a wrong number , press chan/delete to backspace until the number is erased.
Receiving Calls Note: You must subscribe to Caller ID services from your local phone company for the caller’s name and number to be displayed. When th e phone rings, the LCD displa ys information about the person calling you.
Redialing the Last Number Called 1. Remove the Handset from the Base Unit. 2. Press talk . If the Handset fai ls to connect with th e Base the Handset be eps and returns to standby mode.
Usi ng Cal ler ID The Caller ID Display The LCD displa ys informati on about the current call and pr evious calls received on your DXAI685 cordless phone, includ ing the total calls received, and th e number of ne w calls received. The LCD display backlight is always active while th e Handset is on the Base.
5. To see th e time and day a call was received: a. While the name and number are displayed press * . b. To return to the name and number display press * . 6. To see how many times a caller has phoned: a. While the name and number are displayed, press 9/# .
Progr amming Your Pho ne Storing a Caller ID memory number in Dial Memory There are 20 dial memory locat ions in the DXAI685 cordless phone. You can store any number in your Caller ID memory in Dial Memory so it can be used later with memory dialing.
For example, to enter the name Bob Jones: Press ▼ until B is displa yed in the LCD. Press 2 to move one character to the right. Press ▼ until o is displa yed in the LCD. Press 2 to move one character to the right. Press ▼ until b is displa yed in the LCD.
Calling a Number Stored in Memory Use this featu re to dial a number previously stored in memo ry. See Storing a Caller ID memory number in Dial Memory on page 37 or Entering a Number in Dial Memory on page 37 for details. 1. Remove the Handset from the Base Unit.
To edit the number entry in dial memory, for example, to change 59 41 to 1234: Press mem . Press chan/delete four times. Enter 1234 . To edit the name entry in dial memory, for example to change Bob Jones to Tom Jones: Press mem again. Press ▼ until T is displa yed in the LCD.
The Integ rated Answer ing System The DXAI685 has a built-in Answering System which answers incomin g calls and records your messages. You can also use your new Answering System to leave a memo message for someone else who will use th e phone, or to announce a special message when you’ll be away from your phone.
Answe ring S ystem Setup Turning the Answering System On/Off 1. To turn the Answering System on, press answer . A tone sounds, and the current ou tgoing message plays on the Base Unit speaker. A second tone sounds to indicate the un it is ready to answer calls, and the Message Counter LED tu rns on.
6. Press the flash/func tion key again. Note: A beep indicates the new time is programmed, and the new Time and Day Stamp is anno unced from the Base speaker. You are then prompt ed for a PIN code. 7. Enter the two-dig it number you want to use as your PIN code.
Recording Your Personal OGM 1. To record an outgo ing message, press and ho ld ogm . Start recording yo ur message after you hear the long to ne and the Message Counter LED begins to count up . 2. Do not get closer than twelve inches to the microphone, and speak clearly while recording your message.
Note: If the REC TIME/ANN/ 4/1 switch is set to Ann ounce Only, then th e preset message “Hello. No one is available to tak e your call” is played. 3. To select your recorded message again, press ogm . The preset message will begin to pl ay on the Base Unit speaker.
1. When RESET is pressed, the Message Counter begins to flash. 2. Press 6 to clear the flashing P from the display. Note: The RESET button may also be used in the unlikely event that an AC powe r line disturbance ca uses the answering system to malfunctio n and become inoperative.

2. Press 1 at anytime to replay a message. Note: Pressing 1 during a message returns the system to the begin ning of that mes sage. Pressing 1 again before the message replays causes th e system to scan back one message. If you have several messages, press 1 until you return to th e message you wan t to repla y.
3. Press 6 at anytime to stop reviewin g messages and return to Standby. The Message Cou nter LED shows the total nu mber of messages. Note: The system automatically returns to Standby when all messages play. Deleting a Message 1. Press 2 to review your messages.
Deleting All Messages You can delete all your messages without deleting each separate message. To delete all the messages, you must use the delete button on the Base Unit. 1. Press and hold 4 . Note: You must review all messages before using th e “Delete All Messages” function .
Message Full Indication The DXAI685 has a maximum re cord time of ap proximately 25 minutes, or up to 40 inc oming messages. When the memory is full, the Answering System will not record incoming calls. To return the system to normal operation, fol low these steps.
