7 INTRODUCT ION This manual describes how to use the EDACS /ProVoice LPE-200 Portable Radio. T he LPE-200 is a synthesized, m icroproc essor- based, high perfor m ance portable FM radio provid.

12 BUTT ONS A ND KNOBS This section describes the primar y function of the button and knob controls . Other f unctions as sociated with these controls ar e detailed in later sect ions. SYST EM / GROUP/ CHA NNEL KNOB Sel ects sy st ems or groups/channels (depending on program m ing).
13 level (i.e. VO L = 31 ). T he volum e range is f rom a m inim um program m ed level of zero (displayed as OFF in the display) up to 31 which is the loudest level. EMERG ENCY/ HOME BU TTON The EMERGENCY/HOME button is used to autom atically select a pre-progr am m ed Group/System by pressing and holding for a program m ed duration.
14 CLEA R/ MON I TO R BU TTON Serves sever al purpos es depending on the operating mode. In tr unked m ode, the CLEAR/MONIT OR button exits the current oper ation and removes all disp lay s associate d with it. The radio and dis play then return to the group receive state.
15 KEYPA D The k eypad lay out has a total of 6 or 15 k eys. The k ey s have special f unctions and ar e labeled as such us ing a symbol or abbreviated word des cribing its prim ary function. Num eric entry is a s econdary function of the k eys. Each key is described below.
16 Standard Func tions < > Prim ary function - changes the system or group/c hannel (depending on program m ing). Secondary function - used to scroll thr ough item s within a list. Press < , to scr oll in increasing or der, > to sc roll in decreasing or der.
17 Scan M odel O User defined. A Adds or deletes s elected groups or channels f rom the sc an list of the currently selected system . See trunked and conventional scan s ection f or details.

19 The operating pr ocedures that follow assum e that the buttons and k ey pad keys operate as m ark ed. If they have been reassigned, T able 1 should be com pleted to show the new function(s). Subs titute the new assigned k eys w hen using the operating procedures .
20 DISPLA Y The r adio display is made up of 3 lines (Figur e 6). Lines 1 and 2 contain eight alphanum eric c haracter block s and are used prim arily to display system and group nam es. Line 1 also dis plays radio status me ssages . The 3rd line is used pr imar ily to display radio status icons.
21 In trunk ed mode: ON - indicates the r adio is transm itting or rece iving a call on the work ing channel. FLASHING - indicates a c all has been queued. In conventional m ode: ON – indicates a call is being rece ived. ON - indicates the r adio is transm itting.
22 Auto Power mode autom atically adjusts radio output pow er to optim ize battery life. Indicates battery voltage is getting low. Note: W hen or in c onjunction with LOW BA TT me ssage the radio will no longer transm it. T he r adio will automatic ally pow er down soon after this condition ex ists.
23 On - indicates selec ted group or channel is prior ity -one sc an. On - indicator f or c onventional channel is enabled with Channel Guard. FLASHING - indicates Channel G uard is tem porarily disabled. Messag es During radio operation, various radio s tatus mes sages can be displayed.
24 Message Name Description Channel Scan Indicates the control channel is lost and the radio has entered the Control Channel Scan mode to search for the control channel.
25 Message Name Description radio will automatically shutdown. RXEMER Rece ive Emergency - Trunked mode only. Indicates an emergency call is being received. This message will be flashing on line two. TXEMER Transmit Emergency - Trunked mode only. Indicates an emergency call has been transmitted on this radio.
26 Error M essages If either of the following erro r m essages is displayed, the radio was either program m ed incor rectly or needs servic ing: DSP ERR ERR=XXXX DSP ERR or DIG V ERR (Power Up only ) .
27 Call Queued (Trunked M ode On ly) A high-pitched tone af ter press ing the PT T button indicates the system has placed the call r equest in the queue.
28 Carrier Control T imer If the progr amm ed tim e for continuous transm iss ion is exceeded, five s hort high-pitched warning tones followed by a long low-pitched tone will be heard. The transm itter will shut down shor tly after hearing the alert, interrupting c om m unications.
29 OPERA TIO N TURNING ON T HE RA DIO 1. Turn on the r adio by rotating the POW ER ON- OFF/VO LUME knob cloc kwise. A s hort alert signal (if enabled through progr am m ing) indicates the radio is ready to use. 2. The dis play shows the last s elected s ystem and group or a def ault system and group (depending on program m ing).
30 SYST EM /GROUP/CHANNEL SELECTION System Selection Several methods can be used to select a new sy stem. METHO D 1: From knob: If system s election is program m ed to the SYSTEM/ GROUP/CHANNEL k nob, selec t a system by turning the SYSTEM/ GROUP/CHANNEL k nob to the desired system num ber pos ition (1- 16).
31 Note: If sy stem sele ctio n is program m ed to the SYSTEM/GROUP/CHANNEL k nob, direct ac cess to systems will not be available. Press ing < or > will scroll thr ough diff erent sets of 16 systems each (bank s) if m ore than 16 systems are progr am med into the radio.
32 Press M . Group or Channel S election Several methods can be used to select a new group or channel. METHO D 1: Fr om k nob: If group selec tion is program m ed to the SYSTEM/GROUP/ CHANNEL knob, select a group by turning the SYSTEM/GROUP/CHANNEL k nob to the desired group num ber pos ition.
33 Note: If group selec tion is program m ed to the SYSTEM/GROUP/CHANNEL k nob, direct acces s to groups will not be available. Pressing the < or > will scroll through dif f erent sets of 16 groups each ( banks ) if m or e than 16 groups are program m ed into the radio.

35 TRUNKED M ODE OPERATION Digital trunk ing provides f ast co mm unic ation acces s at all times , even during busy hours. In this mode the oper ator selec ts a c om m unications system and group and the audio com m unication or working channel (W C) is allocated through digital s ignaling with the site.
36 The initiating radio ID of the last group c all received is s hown on line one of the display. Use the > to view the radio ID's of other r adios that initiated group calls. Press ing the M key will display the tim e elapsed sinc e that call was received.
37 Sending A Group Call 1. Turn on the r adio and set the PO W ER ON- OFF/VO LUME k nob to the desired volum e level. Select the desired s ystem and group. 2. Press and hold the PTT button. T he radio will display the sy stem and group nam es and perfor m the nec essar y signaling required to obtain a com m unication channel.

The m ess age *RXEM ER* flashes in the display on line two until the em er gency condition is c leared.
40 4. Release PT T when the tr ansm ission is complet e. 5. To clear the em ergenc y firs t press and hold the CLEAR/MONIT OR button. W hile continuing to hold the CLEAR/MONITOR button, pr ess the EMERGENCY button. (T his will work if the radio is program m ed to c lear em ergencies.

42 5. Press A a third tim e to set the gr oup to Priority 1. A is displayed on line three. The priority level section s equence only advances the group to the next high prior ity level and stops at priority level 1. To select a lower priority level, the group m ust be deleted f rom the scan list and then added back to the scan lis t.
43 SYSTEM M odel Radios 1. W ith scan operation turned of f, s elect the desired group to add to the selected trunk ed system group s can list. 2. Press 6 . T he current prior ity status of the group will be display ed in colum n 10 of line thr ee for a tim e-out per iod.
44 FIXED P1 A Priority 1 group has been pre- program m ed into the radio. A new Priority 1 group cannot be selected. FIXD LST A fixed scan list has been pre- program m ed into the radio. It is not possible to change the list without reprogram m ing the radio.
45 SYSTEM M odel Radios 1. W ith scan operation turned of f, s elect the desired group to delete fr om the s elected trunk ed system's gr oup scan list. 2. Press 9 . The curr ent status of the group is displayed for a tim e-out period. 3. W hile the status is displayed, press 9 to delete the group fr om the sc an list.
46 SCA NNING TRUNKED SYST EM S The radio can be program m ed with the following Sy stem Scan f eatures. T hese features ar e automatic ally enabled upon radio power up. A key or menu option is also def ined to allow the System Scan features to be toggled during radio operation.
47 ProSound/ProScan algor ithm is enabled as explained on the following page). T his pr iority scan timer is reset each tim e the PTT button is pr essed or when the call is received.
48 ProSound The radio m ay be program m ed f or Pr oSound system s can operation f or m ulti-s ite applications. ProSound is an enhanced m ulti- site system s canning algorithm com pared to W ide Ar ea Sy stem Scan.
49 scanning algorithm des igned to replace ProSound scanning. ProSc an provides the r adio with the ability to select a new sy stem for the r adio to com m unicate on, when the selected system drops below a predefined level.
50 Pre-Pr ogrammed Key pad Key Press the pr e-program m ed k ey and the SYSC ON or SYSC OF F display mes sage is displayed for two seconds to show the new state.
51 To res pond after the call-back tim e-out, pr ess the # k ey. The radio's display will show the callers ID on the first line and WHCI=1 on the second line. Pressing the PTT button at this point will initiate an individual call back to the original c aller.
52 Press ing PTT will initiate an individual call to the displayed logical ID. Turning the radio of f and on will clear this list. Sending A n Indiv idual Call (Trunked Mode Only) Pre-Stored Individual Calls The following procedures des cribes how to initiate and com plete a pre-s tored individual call.
53 Scan M odel 1. T o se lect a pre-s tored individual num ber, enter the menu m ode by using the M key . S cro ll through the m ode list using the < or > key . Press M . tur ns on. Scr oll through the list of stored phone num bers using the < or > key until the desired num ber is displayed.
54 2. Pres s the PTT button to transm it. turns on, turns of f and the channel ac cess tone sounds. Line one shows the called individual's ID followed by the logical ID number of the unit being called. T he m essage *INDV* displays on line two. Proceed talk ing into the mic rophone.
55 W hen in the saved call lis t, press ing the M key toggles the time s tam p on and off . The tim e s tam p indicates how long ago the call was rec eived. W hen in the pre-stor ed list pres sing the M k ey toggles the L ogical ID entif ication ( LID ) on and off .
56 Press t he M key again then use the < , > keys to scroll thr ough the list of pr estored number s. 2. Pr ess and release the PT T button. W hen the radio is clear to transm it, turns on, turns off and the channel acces s tone sounds . Line one shows the accom panying name selected f rom the list of s tored num bers.
57 Direct Dialing of Phone Ca lls (Sys tem Model only) 1. If the phone number is not stored in the pr e- stored list of phone num bers, but the phone number is k nown, it can be entered direc tly from the keypad. Start by pressing the * . T hen enter the required num ber f rom the k eypad.
58 In half-duplex m ode, only one person m ay talk at a time. The radio PT T button needs to be pressed in or der to com m unicate to the individual called and releas ed f or the individual called to be heard. 4. T o terminate the call, m om entarily press the CLEAR/MONIT OR button.

68 The TX POW ER m enu item , when selected, toggles LO/HI/AUT O power for trunk ed systems or LO/HI power for conventional systems . It does not use < or > to sc roll nor an additional press of the M button.

For exam ple, if a clear group is entered in the scan lis t, it will only receive clear calls .

78 PORTABLE DA T A The LPE-200 radios, when operating in the EDACS configur ation, perm it either voice or data calls to be trans m itted or received. T he radio can handle only one ty pe of c all at a tim e; however, selection of either data or voice is s elected transparently by the operator thr ough norm al usage of the radio.
79 DA TA ON Displayed for two seconds on top line of display when the radio is toggled to the data enabled state. DA TA OFF OPERA TION The radio c an be placed in the data disabled state by any of the following m ethods. W hen the data state is disabled, the display shows " DA TA OFF " on the top line.
80 EXITING DATA CALLS Under norm al conditions , the radio enter s the scan lock out m ode and retur ns to the control channel after com pletion of a data call (trans m it or receive).

The FCC requires that convers ations be brief and confined to business. T o save tim e, use coded m essages whenever possible.
88 OPERA TING TIPS The f ollowing conditions tend to reduce the eff ective range of two-way radios and should be avoided whenever possible. • Operating the radio in low areas of terr ain or while under power lines or bridges. • Operating the radio ins ide of a vehicle or in a me tal or steel fr amed building unles s using an outside antenna.

90 RECHA RGEA BLE BA T T ERY PA CK DISPOSA L NICKEL CA DMIUM (NiCd) BATTERY PA CK DISPOSAL The product you have purchased ma y contain a NiCd (Nic kel Cadmium ) rechargeable, recyclable battery . At the end of its usef ul life under various state and local laws it ma y be illegal to dispose of this battery into the munic ipal waste stream .
91 2. Align the battery pack tabs with the battery mounting plate s lots on the back of the radio (see Figure 7) . 3. Ins ert the tabs into the s lots, pus h down and slide the battery toward the battery latch until the battery latch click s into place.
