3 SECTION 1: IMPORTANT SAFE OPERATION PR ACTICES General Ope ration 1. Read, un derstand , and follo w all ins tructions on the mach ine and in the manua l(s) bef ore attempting to assemb le and opera te. 9 Gas and Oil Fill-up The gaso line tank is lo cated un der the hood and has a capacit y of either two or three gallo ns. Do not overfi ll. WARNING: Use extreme care when handling gasoli ne. Gas oline is extremely flamm able and the vapors are explos ive.

11 Thr ottle Control Lev er The throt tle contro l lever i s located on the right si de of the tracto r’s dash panel. This le ver cont rols the sp eed of the engine an d, on model LTX- 1842, when pu shed all the way for ward, the chok e control a lso.
12 Systems Ind icator Monitor / Hour Meter Your trac tor is e quipped w ith four indicator lights a nd an hour meter loc ated on the lef t side of the das h panel. See Figu re 2. Figure 2 If the Brake light or PTO li ght illumi nates when attempting to start the unit, proc eed as follows : Brake — Engage the parking br ake.
13 NOTE: Cruise control can NOT be engaged at the tractor’s fa stest gr ound speed. I f the op erator should attempt to do so, the trac tor will auto matically decelerate to the fastest op timal mowin g ground sp eed.
14 IMPORT ANT: Do NOT hold th e key in the STA RT position for longer than ten seconds at a time. Doing s o may caus e damage to you r engine’s el ectric sta rter. • After the engine s tarts, deac tivate th e choke co ntrol and place th e throttle control in the FAST po sition.
15 Disengag e the cruise co ntrol using one of the following method s: • Depr ess t he br ake pe dal t o dis engag e th e cruis e control and stop the tract or.
16 42-inch Decks To operate the cutting deck withou t mulching, simpl y remove th e mulch plug by un threadin g the plastic wi ng nut which fas tens it to t he cutting deck . This will allo w the clipping s to discha rge out the side. See Figure 6 . 46-inch Decks The mulc h kit is packe d separat ely within the tractor’s crate.
17 Leveling the Deck NOTE: Check th e tractor’s ti re pressur e before perform ing any dec k leveling ad justments . Refer to Tires on page 20 for informati on regarding tire pressure . Front T o Rear The front o f the cutti ng deck i s supporte d by a s tabilizer bar that can adju sted to level t he deck from front t o rear.
18 Seat Adju stment To adju st the p osition of the se at , loos en the two knobs on the bottom of the seat. See Figu re 9. Slide the se at forward or bac kward as desir ed. Retighte n the two knobs. P arking Brake Adjustm ent WARNING: Never attem pt to adjust the brakes whi le the en gine is runni ng.
19 IMPORT ANT: Refer to the Briggs & Stra tton Operator/ Owner Man ual packe d with your u nit for informa tion regarding the quantity an d proper weigh t of motor oil.
20 SECTION 8: SERVICE Battery The battery is sealed and is mai ntenance-fr ee. Acid lev e ls cannot be chec ked. • Alwa ys keep th e battery cabl es and termin als clean and free of co rrosive build-up. • After cleanin g the battery and ter minals, app ly a light c oat of p etroleum j elly or grease to both terminals .

23 Fig ure 1 6 • After disconnec ting the batter y cables, remo ve the battery an d battery tray from ben eath the seat. IMPORT ANT: When re moving the batter y, disconnec t the NEGATIVE (Bl ack) wire from it’ s terminal first, followed by the POSITIVE ( Red) wire.
24 • Re move the h ex bol t from the center of the engine pulley an d gently lowe r it off of the engine cranks haft. Be care ful not to los e any washe rs or spacer s which may be fou nd on top of the engi ne pulley.
