It can a utoma tically adjust to any voltage from 100 to 240 volts and to a frequency of either 50 or 60 hertz, enabling you to use the computer in almost any country/region.

User’s Manual 3-1 Satellite M100 Chapter 3 Getting Started This chapter provides basic informati on to get you started using your computer. It cove rs the following topi cs: ■ Setting up your work.
3-2 Satellite M100 Getting Started General conditions In general, if you are comfortable, so is you r computer, but read the followi ng to make sure your work site provides a proper environment. ■ Make sure there is adequate spac e aroun d the computer for proper ventilation.
Satellite M100 3-3 Getting Started Seating and postur e The height of your chair i n relation to the computer a nd keyboard as well as the support it gives your body are prim ary factors in reducing work strain. Posture and positioning of the computer ■ Place your chair so tha t the keyboard is at or slightly below the le vel of your elbow.
3-4 Satellite M100 Getting Started W ork habits A key to avoiding discomfort or injury fr om repetitive strain is to vary your activities. If possible, schedule a vari ety of tasks into your work day. If you must spend long periods at the computer, finding ways to break up the routi ne can reduce stress and i mprove your ef ficiency.
Satellite M100 3-5 Getting Started Connecting the AC adapter Attach the AC adapter when you need to charge the battery or you want to operate from AC power. It is also the fastest way to get started, because the battery pack will need to be charged b efore you can ope rate from battery power.
3-6 Satellite M100 Getting Started Opening the display The display panel can be rotated in a wide range of angles for optimal viewing. 1. Push the display latch on the front of the computer. Opening the display 2. Lift the panel u p and adjust it to the best viewing angl e for you.
Satellite M100 3-7 Getting Started Turning on the power Starting up for the first time When you first turn on the power, th e computer's initial screen is the Windows ® XP Startup Screen Logo. Follo w the on-screen directions for each screen. During setup, you can click the Back button to return to the previous screen.
3-8 Satellite M100 Getting Started 3. Click Start and click Shut Down . From the Shut Down window click Turn Off . 4. Turn off the power to any peripheral devices. Hibernation mode The hibernation feature save s the content s of memory to the hard disk when the computer is tu rned off.
Satellite M100 3-9 Getting Started Starting Hibernation To enter Hibernation mode, follow th e steps below. 1. Click Start . 2. Select Shut Down . 3. Open the Shut Down dialog box. If Hibernate is not displayed go to step 4. If Hibernate is displayed go to step 5.
3-10 Satellite M100 Getting Started Standby mode In standby mode the power remains on , but the CPU and all other devices are in sleep mode . Standby precautions ■ Before entering Standby mode, be sure to save your data.
Satellite M100 3-11 Getting Started Enabling Standby You can enter standby mode in one of three ways: 1. Click Start , then Shut Down and then Stand by . 2. Close the display pa nel. This feature must be enabled. Refer to the Setup Action tab in TOSHIBA Power Saver Utility described in the Control Panel.
3-12 Satellite M100 Getting Started Cr eating an Expr ess Medi a Player Recovery CD* A recovery image of Express M edia Player is stored on the hard disk. You may use this image to create Recovery CD disc using the following steps: 1. Select blank CD.

Satellite M100 4-3 Operating Basi cs Points to note about the Fingerprint Sensor Failure to follow these guidelines might result in (1) damage to the sensor or cause sensor failure, (2 ) finger recognition problems , or lowe r finger recognition success rate.
4-4 Satellite M100 Operating B asics Fingerprint Sensor Limitations. ■ The fingerprin t sensor compares and analyzes th e unique ch aracteristics in a fingerprint. ■ A warning message will be disp laye d when recognition is abnormal or recognition is not succ essful within a fixed duration.

Fingerprint Registration Enroll the required authentication data using the User Enrollment Wizard . 1. Click Start , Point to All Programs , point to protector Suite QL and click User Enrollment Wizard .
4-6 Satellite M100 Operating B asics 7. The User’s Fingers screen i s displayed. Based on the illustration, select the finger to be recognized, an d then click Next . Previously enrolled fingerprints would have green check marks. The fingerprint bein g enrolled now would have a red che ck mark.
Satellite M100 4-7 Operating Basi cs Fingerprint System Boot Authentication General The fingerprint authentication syst em can be used to replace the keyboardbased User/BIOS Password au thentication system when booting up.
4-8 Satellite M100 Operating B asics Fingerprint Single Sign On Feature General This is a feature th at allows the use r to complete the authentication for both the User/BIOS Password (and optionally, the Hard Disk Drive and Supervisor sub-passwords) and logging on to Windows using only one fingerprint authentication when booting up.
Satellite M100 4-9 Operating Basi cs How the Swipe the Finger Using the following steps when swiping fingers for fingerprint registration or authentication will help to minimize authentication fail ures: 1. Align the first joint of the finger to th e center of the sensor.
4-10 Satellite M100 Operating B asics Using the internal modem This section describes how to setup the modem and use it to connect to other computer systems. Refer to the co mputer's online help files and the online help files for your mode m software, for more information.
Satellite M100 4-11 Operating Basi cs 3. Click the icon with the primary mouse button to display a list of regions that the modem supports. A sub menu for telephony location information will also be displayed. A ch eck will appear next to t he currently selected region and tele phony location.

Dialing Pr operties Select this item to display the dialing properties. Connecting To connect the internal modem cable, follow the ste ps below.

Disconnecting the LAN cable To disconnect the LAN cable, follow the steps below. 1. Pinch the lever on the connect or in the computer's LAN jack and pull out the connector.

Satellite M100 4-17 Operating Basi cs Loading optical disc media To load a disc, follow the steps below. 1. Turn on the power. 2. a. Pre ss the eject button to open the draw er slightly. Pressing the eject button b. Pressing the eject bu tton will not open the drawer when the computer's powe r is off.

Satellite M100 4-19 Operating Basi cs Closing the drive dra wer Removing compact discs To remove the disc, follow the steps below. 1. To pop the drawer partially open, press the eject button . Gently pull the drawer out until it is fully opened. 2. The disc extends slightly over the sides of the drawer so you can grasp it.

Satellite M100 4-21 Operating Basi cs Express Media Player Express Media Player is a quick pl ay feature that enable s users to perform DVD and CD playback wi thout loading Windows. Notes for Express Media Player Express Media Player (CD) and Ex press Media Player (DVD) Usage ■ Dirty or scratched CD/DVDs might not be playable.

Be careful to check th e disc for dirt or damage before you use it. ■ The actual number of rew rites to CD-RW or DVD-RW/ +RW/-RAM is affected by the qu ality of the di sc and the way i t is used.
4-30 Satellite M100 Operating B asics ■ When multiple drives that can write data to discs are connected, be careful not to write to the wrong drive. ■ Be sure to connect the universal AC adapter before you write or re write. ■ Before you enter standby/hibernation mode, be sure to finish DVD-RAM writing.
