e This group of switches selects a choice of sources for the STEREO LISTEN switch (see below). Any combination may be selected as required. A built-in 1kHz OSCILLA T OR provides a test tone for system tests or aligning T ape Machines. Press the switch to turn ON the oscillator and feed a 1kHz tone to the MIX and GROUP outputs at a fixed level.
Normally the Monitor and Phones outputs receive either the Mix signal or the 2 T rack Return signal, depending on the position of the MIX/2TK switch. STEREO LISTEN provides a further choice of sources from Aux Sends 5-8, Groups 1-4 or Stereo Returns PFL.
You will probably use your SP IRI T FOLIO 4 with a wide range of different t ypes of sound source, and these wil l be at varying signal levels. It is i m port ant to set the GAIN of the inputs corr ectly to give the best perfor mance.
Wh i le t he connections t o the FO LIO 4 for P A work are quite s traightf orward, recording is rather more dem anding because the m ixer is not only required to mix down input s i gnals but also t o provide a m onitor mix f o r art ists to hear previously recorded tracks when overdubbing new parts.

INSERT The pre-EQ Inser t is a br eak poi nt in the channel signal path. It allows the signal to be taken out of the mixer, t hrough an ex ternal piece of equipment and th en back into the m ixer to c ontinue through to the f inal output. The Insert is a 3-pole ‘A’ gauge jack socket, wh ich is normally bypassed.
These contr ol s route t he i nput channel signal to any one or more of eight Auxiliary busses. These combine t he sends from each channel, mixing them to separate outputs on the rear of t he mixer.
STEREO INPUT CHANNE L S 13-20 STEREO INPUT L & R These i nputs accept 3-pole ‘A’ gauge (T RS) jacks. Use t hese inputs for sources such as keyb oards, d rum machines , synths, t ape machi nes or as re turn s from proce ssin g un i ts .
Th is send can be pre- fade and used in the same way as Aux S ends 1 & 2 for Foldback or as a Monitor feed, but for Effect s it is more appropriat e for the Aux Send to fade up and down with the fader ( P OST - FADE).
Just like the P FL switches on the channels, you can monitor the AUX 1-4 outputs by pressing the latching AFL switch. This rout es the AUX out put signal to the MONI T O R or PHONES, r epl ac i ng any existing signal (norm ally the Monitor receives e i ther MI X or the Tape Ret urn, depending on the position of the MIX switch - see bel ow).
The three colour PPM Bargraph Meters normally fo llow the Monitor selection to show the leve l of the Stereo MIX outputs or 2-T rack Tape Returns, giving you a constant warning of excessive peaks in the signal which might cause overloading.
STEREO PUBLIC ADDRESS In this basic PA Set-up, v arious sources are connected t o the inputs, microphones t o Mic inputs and keyboards etc. to L ine inputs. Not e that som e gu itars will not produce suff icient level for a direct connect ion, and will requi re a Direct In j ection (DI ) box connected via the microphone input .
PUBLIC ADDRESS - STEREO + SIDE F ILL OR CENTRE F EED In this second example an additional side fill or cent re speaker cluster is driven from Aux 7 & 8, Aux 4 or Aux 3 switched to Post -fade, with individual rotary fader contr ol. Aux 7 & 8 woul d be ideal, since a Group can also fe ed these Aux sends if required.
STEREO RECORDING The console m ay be used for 2-T rack or basic mu l titrack rec ording, l ive or i n the stud i o. T he set up is simi l ar to the previous ex amples, but with the Mix L/ R Output feeding a 2-Track Tape Machine. The t ape outputs are brought back to the console for monitoring via t he 2-Track Tape Ret urns.
4-Track Reco rding The console m ay also be used for 4- Track recording. The set up i s similar to the previous exam pl e, but with a 4-track recor der fed from the Group Outputs and brought back for monitoring via 4 line inputs. In this case a compressor /limiter is shown applied t o one of the mic channels via the insert.
AFL (After Fade Liste n) a function t hat allows the ope rator to mo n itor the post -fa de signa l in a cha nnel indep ende ntly of the main mix. Balance the re lative levels of the l ef t and rig ht chann els of a s tereo signal.
