6 Using the hand strap ( only for the models supplied with the hand strap) To carry during strenuous activity , use the supplied hand strap. 1 Pass the hand strap through the strap holes of the player . 2 Put your hand through the hand strap, and hold the player in one of the two ways illustrated below .
7 1 . Connect your CD player . 1 Connect the AC po wer adaptor . 2 Connect the headphones/earphones. For models supplied with the remote control • Connect the plug of the headphones/ earphones to the remote control. • Connect the headphones/earphones to the remote control firmly .
8 To Press Play (from the point you stopped) u (T urn the rotary control on the remote control to ward N / > .) Playback starts from the point you stopped. Play (from the first track) u for 2 seconds or more (T urn the rotary control on the remote control to ward N / > and hold it until the play of the first track starts.
9 Playing an audio CD or MP3 files When closing the lid of the CD player with the power supply attached While the “ ” flashes in the display , the CD starts rotating and will stop after the CD player reads the disc information. This helps to shorten the waiting time before playback starts.
10 Playing a CD with MP3 files Prepare the CD player and the CD in the same way as for an audio CD. (See “ About MP3. ”) Press u . The CD player plays all MP3 files on the CD. To select a folder on the CD play er Use FOLDER + to go forward and FOLDER – to go backward.

12 Playback options Y ou can enjoy v arious playback options using PLA Y MODE and REPEA T/ENTER. PLA Y MODE button Each time you press the button, you can change the playback mode. u button REPEA T/ENTER button REPEA T Y ou can repeat play mode that was selected using PLA Y MODE.
13 Playing tracks repeatedly (Repeat play) Y ou can play tracks (“files” when playing an MP3 CD) repeatedly in normal, (MP3 CD only), single, shuffle, shuffle (MP3 CD only) and PGM play modes. During playbac k, press REPEA T/ENTER. When playing MP3 files • In normal mode, the CD player plays all files (up to 255 f iles) on a CD repeatedly .
14 Playing tracks in random order (Shuffle play) During playback, press PLA Y MODE repeatedly until “SHUF” appears. When playing MP3 files In shuffle mode, the CD player plays all f iles (up to 255 files) on a CD in random order .
15 Playing tracks in your favorite order (PGM pla y) Y ou can program the CD player to play up to 32 tracks (“f iles” when playing an MP3 CD) in your fav orite order . 1 During playback, press PLA Y MODE repeatedly until “PGM” appears. 2 Press .

18 Checking the time r emaining on the CD and the number of tracks left Y ou can check the time remaining on the audio CD and the number of tracks left using DISPLA Y . When playing an audio CD containing CD text information, the follo wing information cannot be displayed on the remote control.
19 Emphasizing the bass sound (SOUND) Y ou can emphasize the bass-boosted sound. Press SOUND to select “BASS 1” or “BASS 2.” “BASS 2” enhances the bass sound more than “B ASS 1. ” Note If the sound is distorted when using the SOUND function, turn down the v olume.
20 Locking the controls (HOLD) Y ou can lock the controls on your CD player to prevent accidental b utton presses. Slide HOLD in the direction of the arrow . Y ou can use the HOLD function with both the CD player and remote control. Y ou can still operate your CD player using the remote control when HOLD on the remote control is set to off.
21 Tu r n i ng off the operation beep sound Y ou can turn of f the beep sound that is heard from your headphones/earphones when you operate your CD player . 1 Remove the power source (AC power adaptor , rechar g eable batteries or dry batteries) from the CD play er .
22 Connecting a stereo system Y ou can listen to CDs through a stereo system and record CDs on a cassette tape. F or details, see the instruction manual that comes with the connected device. Be sure to turn off all connected de vices before making connections.
23 3 Connect the A C power adaptor to the DC IN 4.5 V jack of your CD play er and an AC outlet, then press x /CHARGE to start charging. The CD player charges the batteries. The “Charging” indicator turns on in the display , and the indicator sections of light up in succession.
24 Using the rechargeable batteries To remove the rechar g eable batteries Remove the batteries as illustrated belo w . When to charge the rechargeable batteries Y ou can check the remaining po wer of the batteries in the display . Battery power is full.
25 Using the dry batteries Use only the following dry battery type for your CD player: • LR6 (size AA) alkaline batteries Note Be sure to remov e the A C power adaptor when using the dry batteries. 1 Open the battery compartment lid. 2 Insert two LR6 (size AA) batteries by matching the 3 to the diagram in the battery compartment.
26 Precautions On safety • Should any solid objects or liquid fall into the CD player , unplug it and have it checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further . • Do not put any foreign objects in the DC IN 4.5 V (external power input) jack.
27 Tr oubleshooting Should any problem persist after you hav e checked these symptoms, consult your nearest Sony dealer . Symptom Cannot adjust the volume by turning the rotar y control on the remote control. Cannot start play by turning the rotary contr ol on the remote control.
28 Tr o u bleshooting Symptom The CD does not play or “No disc” appears in the display when a CD is placed in the CD player . “HOLD” appears in the display when you press a button, and the CD does not play . The CD player does not start charging.
29 Symptom During playback of an MP3 CD, the CD does not rotate but you can hear the sound normally . “NO FILE” appears in the display after u is pressed or the lid of the CD player is closed. The CD does not start playing. It takes a long time to start playback.

32 About “MP3” What is the MP3? MP3 (MPEG 1 Audio Layer-3) is a standard technology and format for compressing a sound sequence. The f ile is compressed to about 1/10 of its original size. Sounds outside the range of human hearing are compressed while the sounds we can hear are not compressed.
33 About “ID3 tag” ID3 tag is a format for adding certain information (track name, album name, artist name, etc.) to MP3 files. Note This CD player conforms to V ersion 1.1 of the ID3 tag format. If you use a version other than 1.1, ID3 tag information will not be displayed correctly .
