3 Preparing the phone To insert the SIM ca rd and battery 1 Remove th e battery co ver. Slide th e SIM card in to its ho lder with the contacts facing down. 2 Insert the battery wi th the label s ide up and t he connector s facing each other. Replace the battery cove r as shown in the picture.
4 To charge the battery 1 The phone battery is partly charged when you buy it. Conn ect the charger to the phon e. It takes approximat ely 2.5 hours to fully charge the batt ery. Press a key to illuminate the screen. 2 To remove t he charger, t ilt the plug u pwards.
5 To turn on the phone 1 Press and hold down . 2 Enter your PIN if reques ted. To correct mi stakes, press . 3 Select OK . 4 Select a language. 5 Enter the time and date and select Save .
6 SIM and PIN SIM card The SIM (Subscribe r Identity Module) card, which you get from your network operator, con tains information about your subscription. Always turn o ff your phone and detach the charger and remove the battery before you insert or remove the SIM card.
7 Network coverage The network bars show the strength of the GSM network in your area. Try moving to anothe r location if y ou have trouble calling and network coverage is poor.

13 Calling You must turn on the phone and be wi thin range of a network. To make a call 1 From standby enter th e area code and phone number. 2 Press . To activate the slide for an swering and ending calls 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > the Calls tab.
14 To mute the microphone during a call • Press and hold to turn the microphone on and off. To change the ear speaker volume during a call • Press or . To make international calls 1 From standby press and hold down until a + sign appears on the screen.
15 Messaging Text messages (SMS) You must have a service centre number, which is supplied by your service provider and saved on the SIM card. You may have to enter the number yourself. To set a service centre number 1 From standby select Menu > Messaging > Settings > Text message > Service centre .
16 Picture messages (MMS) Picture messages can contain text, image s and sounds. To create and send a pictu re message 1 From standby press . 2 Select Picture msg . 3 Press or to switch between writing text and adding items. Select Options to select writin g opti ons.
17 Contacts You can save contac ts in the phone memor y or on the SIM card. You c an copy co ntacts f rom the phon e memory to the SIM card o r from the S IM card t o the phone memory. To add a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to New contact and select Add .
18 To edit a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to the contact an d select Options > Edit conta ct . 3 Navigate between the ta bs, edit the informati on and select Save . To delete a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to the contact an d press .
19 Radio To listen to the radio 1 Connect the handsfre e to the phone. 2 From standby select Menu > Entertainment > FM radio . To control the radio • Press or to search for channe ls manually.
20 Music player You can play music files saved in the phone memory. The music stops when you receive or make a call, and the pla ying resum es when the call has ende d. To play a music track 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to Tracks and select Open . 3 Scroll to the track and select Play .
21 Camera Your phone has a digital camera to ta ke pictures to save or send. Pic tures taken w ith the ca mera are sav ed in Menu > Organizer > File manager > Camera album . The format is JPEG. To start the camera and take a picture 1 Open the slide.
22 More functions Ringtones and themes Themes are used to change the appearance of the sc reen. To select volume, ringtone or vibrating alert 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > the Sounds & alerts tab.
23 Alarms You can set a sound or the radio as an a larm si gnal. The ala rm sounds even if the phone is turned of f. To set an alarm 1 From standby select Menu > Organizer > Alarms . 2 Scroll to an alarm an d select Edit . 3 Scroll to Time: and select Edit .
24 TrackID™ TrackID™ is a music r ecognition servic e. Search for song titles, artists and album names. You must have correct Inter net settings in your phone . See Internet on page 29. To search for song informat ion • When you hear a song through a loudspeaker, from stan dby select Menu > Entertainment > TrackID™ .
25 To enter text using predictive text input • For example, if you wa nt to write the word “land”, press , , , . • If the wor d or punctuatio n mark is t he one you want, pres s to accept and add a space. To ac cept a word without adding a spac e, press .
26 Multiple calls When call waiting is activated, you will hear a be ep when you receive a second call. To activate call waiting • From standby select Menu > Settings > the Calls tab > Manage calls > Call waiting > Activate . To answer a second ca ll 1 When you hear a beep during a call, select Answer .
27 Voicemail Callers can leave a voicemai l message when you cannot answer. Ask your operat or for your voicemail nu mber. To enter your voicemail number 1 From standby select Menu > Messaging > Settings > Voicemail no. 2 Enter the voicemail number and s elect OK .
28 Time and date To set the time 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Time & date > Time . 2 Select Format and choose a time format. 3 Enter the time and select Sa ve . To set the date 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Time & date > Date .
29 Internet To browse the Internet, you nee d the correct sett ings in your phone. If settings are not in your phone, you can: • Get them in a text message (SMS ) from your network operator. • On a computer, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support and request a text mess age with th e settings.
30 To move a file to a folder in the file manager 1 From standby select Menu > Organizer > File manager . 2 Find the file and select Optio ns > Manage file > Move . 3 Navigate to t he folder an d select Paste . To delete a file in the file manager 1 From standby select Menu > Organizer > File manager .
31 Bluetooth™ wireless technology Bluetooth™ wireless technology ena bles wireless connections to o ther Bluetooth devices, fo r example, a Blue tooth handsfre e.
32 To pair a device with your phone 1 Make sure t he phone an d the device a re visible an d ready to paired. 2 From standby select Menu > Settings > the Connectivity tab > Bluetooth > My devices > New device to s earch f or available devi ces.
33 Locks SIM card lock The SIM ca rd lock protec ts yo ur subscription, but not your phone itse lf, from una uthorized use. If you change SIM cards, the phone still works with the new SIM card.
34 To edit your PIN 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Security > SI M lock > Change PIN . 2 Enter your PIN and select OK .
35 To edit your phone lock code 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > the General tab > Security > Phone lock > Change co de . 2 Enter the current code and select OK . 3 Enter a new code and select OK . 4 Re-enter th e new code to confirm a nd select OK .
36 Troubleshooting Some problems require that you call your service pro vider, but you can correct most problems yourself. Remove the SIM card before handing your phone in for repair .
37 I cannot turn the phone on , what should I do? Try charging the phon e until it has finished charging. Co nnect the charger (make sure the power icon on the charger is facing upwards) and charge t he phone for 2 .5 hours. T he battery icon on the scr een may n ot appear until the phon e has cha rged for 30 minutes.

38 Hardcoded Shortcuts Hardcoded Shortcuts The followi ng is the list of hardcoded shortcuts. Long press center button - Silences the incoming call ringtone . Long press 3 or the right arrow key - Swit ches the speaker mode during a GSM call.

40 WAP Browser options : If web pages cont ain pictures, you can choose whether to show these pictures in this menu by selecting the op tion Show images. If you choose the Enable refresh option in this menu the web pages get refreshed . Rename profile : Specify a name f or the selected pro- file in this menu.
41 Opera Mini Opera Mini Opera Mini is a web browser designed for mobile phones. It uses the Java ME platform an d consequently requires that the mobile device be capable of running Ja va ME app lica- tions. Opera Mini is offered free of charge. This mobile phone has a copy of Opera Mini pre-installed.
