26 Chapter 4: Using the System Features Befor e Y ou Get Started ... Make sure you (or your DSS sy stem i nstalle r) ha ve com pleted the following procedures befor e you sta rt using your DS S receiver: 1 Install the satelli te antenna, as described in the Satellit e Antenn a Installation Manual .
Chapter 4: Using the System Features 27 Using the On-Scr een Displays: Highlig ht and Select All of the f eat ures and funct ions of the DS S receiver c a n be ope rate d using a simple, two-step pr ocess: Highlight and Select. These two steps are explained below .

30 Chapter 4: Using the System Features Moving Thr ough the Master G uide The on-scr een program guides ar e displayed only one page at a time. Because the program guide usually contains many pages, you need to move thr ough the gu ide to see more of the pr ograms contained in the guide.
Chapter 4: Using the System Features 31 Displaying F avorite Statio ns T o see your favorite stations in the program guide: Press the F A VORITE button. Pressing the F A VORITE button r epeatedly cycles through the stations currently set for the thr ee Favorite Station Guides (F A V A, B, and C), and then back to the normal guide.
32 Chapter 4: Using the System Features Selecting a Pr ogr am from the Guide For all programs e xcept pay-per-view (PPV), you can select a pro gram from the guide just by pressing the joystick. If the program is currently showing, the guide disappears and the pr ogram you selected appears.
Chapter 4: Using the System Features 33 Selecting Pr ogr am Guides and Lists By Category In addition to us ing the Mast er Guide, you can use the SELECT GUIDE and SELECT LIS T options in the Main Menu to select subsets of the Master Guide. These subsets are sorted by program categories, s uch as Movies, Sports, News, an d so on.
34 Chapter 4: Using the System Features Selecting a Program Guide or List By Program Category T o select another guide or program guide format: 1 Press the MENU button to bring up the Main Menu. 2 Select SELECT GUIDE or SELECT LIST from the Main Menu.
Chapter 4: Using the System Features 35 Selecting the Custom Guide The Custom Guide is a pr ogram guide that you can create to include only the stat ions yo u want. Note See “ Setting Up a List of Custom Stations ” on page 59 for instru ctions on setting up your c ustom st ations.
36 Chapter 4: Using the System Features Using the S tatio n Index The Station Ind e x is an on-screen display that co ntains the sta tio n logo (or call letters) of al l the stations in the system. Y ou ’ ll fi nd the S tatio n Index useful when you wa nt to tune to a specific station, rath er than to a s pecif ic pr ogra m.

Pressing the F A VORITE button repeated ly cycles through the three Favorite Station Guides (F A V A, B, and C).

44 Chapter 4: Using the System Features Setting Up the T imer Use the T i mer Setup screen to specify a day and time on which you want the DSS receiver to automatica lly tune to a specific sta tio n. Y ou can use this feature in coordination with your VCR ’ s ti me r rec ordi ng function to autom ate the recording of DSS programs.
Chapter 4: Using the System Features 45 5 Set the day , start time, stop time, and channel number as follows: T o set each item (day , time, chann el), move the jo ystick up a nd down. T o move to the next or previous item, move the joysti ck right left and rig ht.
46 Chapter 4: Using the System Features Changing/Checking/ Clearing Timer Settings T o change , check, or clear timer settings: 1 Bring up the T imer Setup screen, as described on page 44. 2 Check your settings . If you don ’ t want to make any cha nges, select OK to return to the System Menu.
Chapter 4: Using the System Features 47 Reading Y our Messages Occasionally , your program providers will send messages to your DSS receiver . These messages contain useful information about your system, such as infor mat ion abo ut new ser v ices, p rogram prom otions , or billing.

54 Chapter 5: Using the Custom Setup Menu Setting Locks and Limits The Locks and Limits featur e gives you control over the use of your system. Y ou can r estrict program viewing by cost, ratings, and station. Y ou can also set a lock to prevent the ordering of pay-per-view progra ms.

58 Chapter 5: Using the Custom Setup Menu Overriding the System Lock Y ou can temporarily o verride any locks or lim its that have been set if you know th e system passcode. For example, if you try to w at ch a program on a lock ed station, a message identifies the lock or limit exceeded.
Chapter 5: Using the Custom Setup Menu 59 Setting Up a List of Custom Stations If there a re stations listed in the Master G u ide that you don ’ t subscribe to or watch often, you ca n us e the Set Custom Station s feature to specify which station s from the Master Guide you want to skip.
60 Chapter 5: Using the Custom Setup Menu Using the AUT O Skip Feature When you select the AUTO button, the DSS receiver automatically scans al l the statio ns in th e current Master Guide. Du ring thi s scan ning process, the DSS receiver determines which station s you are not authorized to watch and then sets these s tations to be sk ipped.
