25 Preparation US Preparing the PSP™ system for use Before usin g the PSP ™ system for the first time afte r purchas e, you must follow thes e steps to ch arge the batter y.
26 Preparing the PSP™ system for use 1 Plug the AC power cord into the A C adaptor. 2 Connect the AC adaptor to the DC IN 5V connector on the system bottom. Getting started 2: Charging Caution • The socket-outlet shall be installed near th e equipment and shall be easily accessible.
27 Preparation US Preparing the PSP™ system for use 3 Plug the AC power cord into an e lectrical outlet. The power indicator lights up in orange, indicat ing that charging h as begun. The power indicator will turn o ff when the battery is fully charged.
28 Connecting the headphones with remote control 1 Connect the headphones to the PSP™ system. Hint The remote control is exclusively for use with the PSP™ system and accessories made exclusively for the PSP™ system. It cannot be used with other devices.
29 Basic operations US T urning the PSP™ system on and off 1 Slide the power/hold switch up. The power in dicator li ghts up in green, an d the home menu is dis played. Hints • If the PSP™ system is turned on with a UMD™ inserted, the UMD™ will begin playback automatically.
30 T urning the PSP™ system on and off 1 Hold the power/hold s witch in the up positio n for more than three seconds. The power indi cator flashe s and then turn s off, indicatin g that the syst em is turned off.
31 Basic operations US Using sleep mode If the PSP ™ system is switche d to sl eep mode, the soft ware that is playin g will be paused. When sleep mode is cleared, you can begi n playbac k from the poi nt where the sy stem ent ered sleep m ode. Notices • Do not put the system in sleep mode while the Memory Stick Duo™ access indicator is on.
32 Using sleep mode 1 Slide the power/hold switch up again. Sleep mode is cleared. Hints • You can also clear sleep mode by pressing the u (play/pause) button of the remote control, if the system was put in sleep mode during music or video playback.

Ejecting the Memory Stick Duo™ Open the slot cove r and press th e Memory Stick Duo™ in the di rection o f the arrow to eject. Notice When the Memory Stick Duo™ access indicator is lit, the PSP™ system is saving or loading data.

39 Basic operations US Battery The batter y charge leve l is displayed on the screen . Estimating the remai ning battery power Hints • If the power indicator flashes green, save game progress and recharge the battery. If the battery runs out before you save, game progress will be lost.
40 Battery • Battery charge level can also be checked in "Battery Information" under ""System Settings" ( page 95). • If the PSP™ system is left unused after the battery runs out, the date and time settings may be reset.
41 Basic operations US Battery Hint The battery pack lifespan varies depending on how it is stored, the conditions of use and environmental factors, such as temperature. For safety reasons, tu rn off t he system an d remove t he power c ord from the electrical outlet before replacing th e battery pac k.

60 Listening to music Hints • If the start button or the u button on the remote control is pressed in step 3, the first track of the first group will begin playing. • If the home button or select button is pressed during playback, the screen will return to the home menu.

85 Photo US Saving images on a Memory Stick Duo™ * A Memory Stick Duo Adaptor (model number MSAC-M2: a Sony product sold separately) is required if the slot on the device you are using is able to handle only the standard-size Memory Stick™.

Icons displayed under Netwo rk Network Using the Internet LocationFree™ Player You can watch TV or videos by using the wireless networking feature to connect to a LocationFree™ Base Station (a Sony product sold separately).
87 Network US Connecting to the Inter net You can conn ect to the Internet to view Web pages using the Internet bro wser. Note that you must be within rang e of a wireless a ccess point (or hotspot) that allows conn ections to the Int ernet.

97 Settings US Theme Settings You can change the theme for the PS P™ system scr een or displ ay an imag e as wallpaper. You can chan ge the bac kground col or of the s creen. Use the direc tional but tons to select a background color, a nd then pres s the button to co mplete the setting.
98 Date & Time Settings You can se t the da te and t ime, time z one and d aylight sav ing time f or the P SP™ system. Use th e directiona l buttons to selec t each item, an d then press th e button to complete th e setting.
99 Settings US P ower Sa ve Settings You can conse rve the p ower of the PSP™ syst em by setti ng the sy stem to automatica lly switch of f the backl ight or go into sleep mo de. When the sys tem remains idle for a certain period of t ime, it s aves power b y automatica lly turnin g off the backlight on the LCD s creen.
100 P ower Sav e Settings You can set the system to conse rve power by aut omatically entering slee p mode when it rema ins idle for a ce rtain period of time. For d etails on clea ring sleep mode, see " Clearing slee p mode" ( page 32). The default setting for the menu item is underlined.
101 Settings US Sound Settings You can turn off the key tone a nd limit the volume le vel. You can limit the maximum v olume. This can help pre vent sound escaping from the h eadphones a s well as the possible da nger result ing from be ing unable to hear what is going o n around you when wearing headphon es.

103 Settings US Security Settings Some UMD™ soft ware have a preset paren tal contr ol level ba sed on the content. You can set the paren tal contro l level on the sy stem to res trict the playback of a UMD™ with a l evel that is higher than that s et on th e system.
