This manual o ffers a quick introduction and reference to your Sony computer .
Ergonomic Considerations Y ou w ill be using your notebook computer as a portable device in a variety of envir onments. Whenever possible, you should attempt to apply the following er gonomic con siderations to both stationary and portable envir onments.
❑ Furniture and postu re – Sit in a chair with goo d back support and armr ests. Adjust the level of the chair so your feet are flat on the floor . A footr est may make you mor e comfortable. Sit in a relaxed, upright posture an d avoid slouching forwar d or leaning far backwa rd.

Using Y our 505 SuperSlim Notebook This section describes how to start using your computer and h ow to use your computer ’s internal and external devices, such as the touchpad and floppy disk drive.

Connecting a Powe r Source Y ou can use either AC power or a r echar geable battery pack as a power source. 1 Plug the cable attached to the AC adapter into the DC In connector on the computer . 2 Pull the prong on the AC adapter upwar ds and plug it into an AC outlet.
Y ou can use a battery pack as a sou r ce of power. The PCGA-BP51 battery pack that comes with your co mputer is not fully charged at th e time of purchase. Follow the steps below to ins ert and charge the battery pack. 1 Move the lock lever on the bottom of th e computer to the position.
1 Connect the AC adapt er to the computer . 2 Insert the battery pack. The computer automatically char ges the batter y (the battery indicator light flashes in a double blink pattern as the ba ttery char ges). When the battery is 85% f ull, the battery i ndicator ligh t turns off.
1 T urn of f the computer . 2 Slide the lock lever to the pos ition. 3 Slide the r elease lever to the position and slide the battery away from the computer .
Star ting Y our Comput er 1 Slide the LCD lock lever in the dir ection of the arrow , and lift the cover . 2 Slide the power switch on the right side towar d the fro nt of the computer until the green power indicato r light turns on. 3 If necessary , adjust the brightness contr ols for the LCD display .
Shutting Down Y our Compute r 1 Click the Start but ton on the W indows 98 taskb ar . 2 Click Shut Down at the bottom of the Start menu to dis play the Shut Down W indow s dialog box. 3 Select Shut down. 4 Click OK. 5 W ait fo r your computer to turn off automatically .
Registering Windo ws ® 98 The first time you turn on your co mputer , you need to complete a few steps to register and conf igure the W indows 98 software that is al ready installed on your computer . The on-scr een instructions guide you thr ough the r egistration and configuration pr ocess.

Using the Keyboard Y our keyboard is very similar to a typewriter ’s, but the keyboard has additional keys th at perform specific comput er-r elated tasks.
Escape k ey The E sc (Escape) ke y is used to cancel commands Print Scr een ke y The Print Screen key takes a n electron ic snapshot of the scr een an d places it in the W indows Clipboar d. Y ou can then paste the scr een shot in to a docume nt and p rint it.
+ F1 Displays W indows Help. + T ab Switches the selected button on th e taskbar . + E Displays W indows Explor er . + F Displays the W indows Find: A ll Files w indow to find a file or f older . This is the equivalent of selecting Find an d then Fil es or Fo lders fr om the S tart menu .
Informat ion T u rns on w hen the PP K T im er is set . T urns off when the PPK Timer is not set or the PPK T imer setting i s inact ive. (S uch as w hen the c ompute r ’s power is of f or i n System Hib ernation mode.) Bat tery Indicat es th e stat us of the b attery atta ched at the rear of t he computer .
Fn+ (ESC) System Su spend Puts t he system in to Sy stem Sus pend mode, a power m anagement state. T o r eturn the system to the ac tive state, pr ess a ny key or press t he power switch on y our computer .
Using the T ouchpad The keyboar d contains a cursor -pointing device called a touchpad. Y ou can point to, select, drag, and scroll objects on the screen using the built-in touchpad . Point Slide one fi nger on the touchpad to place the pointer on an item or object.
Using the Plastic Pen The plastic pen, located in the vinyl bag with your User Gui de , ca n be us ed on the touchpad for draw ing or for signing you r name with th e ScribblePad softwar e. Y ou can store th e pen in the pen c ompartment on the left side of the L CD screen.
ScribblePad is an applica tion that lets you create memos by writing on the touchpad usin g the supplied plastic pen. 1 Click the Start but ton on the W indows 98 taskb ar . 2 Point to Software Cen ter , point to Applications, and then click ScribblePad.
Using the Flo ppy Disk Drive Y ou can connect the floppy disk drive to the FDD connector on your computer: 1 T urn off the computer . 2 Open the cover of the Floppy disk drive conne ctor . 3 Plug the floppy disk drive cable into the FDD connector . The V AIO logo on the disk drive should be facing up.
❑ When you finish using the diskette, wait until the LED indicator turns off and then press the Eject button to remove the diskette. 1 T urn of f the computer . 2 Press both sides of the floppy disk drive cable and unplug the cable from the computer .
Using PC Car ds Y our comput er includes a PC card slot. PC cards allow you to connect portable external devices, such as a CD-ROM drive, or to connect to a network . 1 Pull the PC card r elease button up away from the computer and push it in towards the comput er .
2 Remove the PC card slo t protector . 3 Insert the PC car d into the PC car d slot, fro nt label facing up. Gently push the car d into the slot until the car d is fixed into the co nnector .
1 Close any applications that use the PC car d. Otherwise data may be lost. 2 Click the PC card ico n in the taskbar and close the card. 3 Pull the PC card r elease button up and press it in towar ds the computer . 4 Gently grasp the card and pull it out.
Using Infrare d Communication De vices Y our computer includes an infrar ed port, located on the right side o f the computer . Y ou can use this port to communicate with other infrar ed- equipped devices wit h compati ble protocols, su ch as a digital st ill camera or other computers.

Using Power S aving Mod es When you use a battery as the source of power for your computer , you can take advant age of power management settings to cons erve battery life.
The state of the system is saved on the hard drive and power is turned o ff. The power indicator ligh t is off in this m ode. Press Fn+F12. Y ou can al so use the PowerPa nel utility to en ter System Hibernation mode. T urn on the computer by sliding the power switch forward.
Connecting Peripheral Devices Y ou can add functionality to your co mputer by connecting any of these peripherals: ❑ Phone line (pag e 34) ❑ Port replicator ( page 35) ❑ Printer (page 37) ❑ Ex.
Connecting a Phone Line Y ou need to connect a phone line to take advantage of on line services, the Internet, and Son y Online Support. 1 Open the phon e line jack cover . The cover opens only to a 45 de gree angle . 2 Plug one end of the phone cable in to the jack on the in side of the phone line jack cover .
Connecting the Port Replicator Y ou can use the PCGA-PR5 port r eplicator (supplied) to con nect peripheral devices such as a printer or external display .
1 T urn off the computer . 2 Open the port r eplicator connector cover on the left side of the computer . 3 Plug the port r eplicator cable into the por t replicator conn ector on the computer . 1 T urn off the computer . 2 Press both sides of the port re plicator cable and unplug the cable fro m the computer .
3 Fold the port replicator cable into the compartment on the side of the port replicator . Y ou can use the port r eplicator to connect a W i ndows 98-com patible printer or other para llel port device to your computer . ❑ Use the symbol to locate the Printer connector on the port replic ator .
Y ou can use the port replicator to connect an external display to your notebook computer . For example, you can use the computer with any of the follow ing: ❑ Computer display (monitor ) (page 38) ❑ Pro jecto r (page 39) ❑ Use the symbol on the port r eplicator to locate the Monitor connector .
Y ou can use a pr ojector as an extern al display , such as the So ny LCD Projector . 1 Use the symbol to locate the Monito r connector . Plug the RGB signal cabl e into this connector . 2 Use the symbol to locate the Headph one connector . Plu g the audio cabl e i nto this co nnec tor .
Y ou can use the port replicator to connect an external mouse and keyboard to yo ur computer . The Mouse and Keyboard connectors r equire a PS/2 ™ -style plug or adap ter . 1 T urn off the computer . 2 Use the and symbols to locate the Mouse and K eyboard connectors.
Y ou can use the port r eplicator to connect your notebook com puter to another c omputer , or to conn ect other peripherals, such as the Sony Digital Still Camera . ❑ Use the sy mbol to locate the Serial connecto r . Plug the connecting cable into this port on the por t replicator and into the serial port on the desktop computer .
❑ Use the s ymbol to locate th e Serial connector . Plug the connecting cable into this port on th e port replicator and into the Di gital I/O connector on the digita l still camera.
Connecting the CD-ROM Drive Y ou ca n use the optional PC GA-CD5 CD-ROM dri ve with your notebook computer . 1 T urn off your computer . 2 Remove the PC card slo t protector f rom the PC car d slot. S ee “Using PC Cards” on page 26 for details. 3 Connect the CD-ROM drive cable to the PC card supplied with the CD-ROM drive.
5 Connect the CD-ROM drive AC power adapter to the CD-ROM drive and plug the AC adapter into an AC outlet. 1 Slide the power switch to the o n position. 2 Slide the Open button in the direction of the arrow to open the CD-ROM drive lid. 3 Place the CD-ROM disc in the tray with the label side facing up.
4 Gently press on the CD-ROM drive lid un til it clicks shut In addition to con necting the CD-ROM drive to yo ur computer , you must connect the drive to th e computer with a male-to-male ster eo mini plug (not supplied).
Connect ing Ext ernal Spe akers Y ou can use the optional PCGA-SP5 ster eo speakers with your com puter or other speakers designed for computer use. ❑ Insert the speakers into the slots on the sides of the display .
❑ Use the symbol to locate the Headphone connector . Plug the speaker cable into this con nector . ✍.
Connect ing a Digi tal Video Camera Recorder The PCG-505FX 505 SuperSlim Notebook includ es an i.LINK (IEEE 1394) connector , which you can use to conn ect to a digital video camera rec o rd e r .
Connecting a Un iversal Serial Bus (USB) Device Y ou can connect a USB device to your computer . ❑ Use the symbol to locate the USB connector on the left side of the computer . Plug one end of a USB cable into th is port and the other end into the USB d evice.

Getting Started with V AIO Space V AIO Space is S ony’s origina l utility that or ganiz es the preinstalled application s on your V AIO N otebook Comp uter , makin g it easier for yo u to find and launch the appl ications on your computer , use the Son y audio and video players, connect to th e Internet, and mor e.
V A IO Space C enters There are five cen ters within V AIO Space, as follows: Software Center Applicatio ns Accessories Contains icons for all prein stalled applic ations and acces sories. See “Usin g the Softwar e Center” on pa ge 55 for deta ils.
Navigat ing throu gh V AIO Space 1 Move the mouse pointer over an icon on the V AIO Launcher . Categories for each center appear . 2 Click the category text (such as ) to open the V AIO screen.
Goes to the previous scre en or page in a sequenc e. Unavailable until yo u go to anot her s creen. Goes to the next scr een or page in a sequence. Unavailabl e on the las t scree n in a sequen ce. Stops loading the curr ent page (used for web pages).
Using t he Softwar e Cent er 1 Move the mouse pointer over the Softwar e Center icon on the V AIO Launcher . 2 Click the text of the category ( or ) to open the V AIO screen. 3 T o sta rt an appl icat ion, click th e icon . Display in formation about a progr am.
Usin g the Au dio-Video Ce nte r The Audio-V ideo Center includes the following pro grams: The V i deo Player plays MPEG (.mpg), MPEG2 (.vob) and A VI (.avi) video files. 1 Move the mo use pointer over the Audio- V ideo Center icon on the V A IO Launcher .
1 Click the Play List button. 2 Select on e or mor e video files fr om the A V PlayList dialog box. 3 Click ADD. 4 Click OK. The video file begins playing automatically . The Music/Movie Player allow s you to play audio and video fr om a CD in the optional CD-ROM drive, or fr om audio or video files in various formats on your har d drive.
Y ou can expa nd the Control bar to double-height to a ccess more functions by clicking the Expand butto n ( ▼ ) at the far right. T o r eturn to singl e height, click the R estore button ( ▲ ). T o change the Control ba r into a floating window , drag the bar to the center of the screen.
Using t he Online Cente r 1 Move the mouse pointer over the Online Center icon on the V AIO Launcher . 2 Click the text of the category as described below . Easy I nternet V A IO Dire ct Sony of fers an en tire line of pr oducts specifically designed to work with your computer .
Using the T o ol Center 1 Move the mo use pointer over the T o ol Center icon o n the V AIO Launcher . 2 Click to open the V AIO screen. 3 T o sta rt a program or accessory application, click the icon. Display in formation about a pr ogram. Mov e the mouse pointer ov er the progra m icon.
The Options screen lets yo u customize the wa y V AIO Space w orks. 1 Move the mouse pointer over the T ool Center icon on the V AIO Launcher . 2 Click to open the V AIO screen. 3 Set the options as follows: 4 Click Apply . Launch V AIO Spa ce II at Star tup Launc h V AIO Space a utoma tica lly when you turn on your computer .
Usin g the He lp C enter The Help Center steps you th rough a number of option s including the electron ic documentation included on your har d drive and finding answers on Sony’s Internet site. For a complete description of a ll the help options available, see “G etting Help” on page 75.
Customizing Y our Notebook Computer Y ou ca n customize the sett ings of your no tebook computer . The following sections briefly describe ho w to change you r computer ’s default setting s. Y ou can also refe r to the Sony Notebook Setup Help for mor e detailed informa tion.
About This Computer Dis play system information, including memory capacity , serial n umber , and BIOS version. Infrared Change the infrared communication settings depending on the infrar ed equipment your computer is using to communicate. Print er Change printe r port mode se tting s.
Controlling Power Management The PowerPanel utilit y allow s you to control the power mana gement of your notebook computer and provides key in formation ab out system activity and battery life. The following sections briefly describe how to conserve your computer ’s battery power .
PowerPanel also pr ovides power management commands that you ca n use to activate sp ecific power management functions and to control power for a specific device.
1 Double-click the (PowerPanel) icon on the taskbar . The Profiles too lbar appears. When you move the poin ter over the atom icon on the taskbar , a tooltip with the name o f the active power managem ent profile a ppears. 2 Click the button yo u want to set.
Displaying Battery Informatio n Y ou can display detailed information for the battery in your computer . The following sections briefly describe how to dis play your computer ’s general battery information . Y ou can also r efer to the BatterySco pe Help for mor e detailed information.
Y ou can obtain detailed information about the batteries. ❑ Double-click the battery icon on the toolbar to display the BatteryScope wi ndow . The scree n appears displaying the Battery tab, which contains informatio n such as the estim ated time-to-empty and th e charging time.
Star ting Y our Favo rite Sof tware With Programmable Power K ey (PPK) Setup The PPK Setup so ftware enables you to sta rt your favorite softwa re by simply pressing the pr ogrammable pow er key . This section briefly describes how to use the pr ogrammable power key .
2 Select the softwa re title you want PPK to launch automat ically from the Registered Files list and right-click. Th e Setup options screen appears. 3 Click Set as PPK lau nch file.
Selecti ng the Display Mode When you connect an extern al display , you can toggle the display mode between the LCD on your co mputer and an external display . 1 Click the Start bu tton on the W indows 98 taskbar . 2 Point to Set tings and click Control Pane l.

6 Sony Fax-on-Dema nd This servi ce provides you with answers t o commonly asked qu estions . Y ou can u se this au tomated service to r eques t a list of av ailable topics an d then selec t the topics that yo u want to r ece ive. T o contact the S ony fax-o n-demand servi ce, c all 1- 888-4S ONYPC (1-888-476-6972).
Calling SOS The SOS applica tion enables you to exchange informa tion with a So ny Customer Support Repr esentative (CSR). Her e’s how it works: ❑ T ype your name and the problem description in the SOS window . ❑ Dial the SOS h otline with a sin gle click of the mouse.
3 In the SOS window , type your name, ph one number , and a description of the pr oblem. This information cannot be seen by the customer support representative until you give the CSR access to your computer . 4 Click the Call SOS butto n. The Confirmation s creen appears.
T roubleshooting This section describes h ow to solve common problems you may encounter when using your computer . Many problems h ave simple solutions , so try these suggestio ns before you call Sony Onli ne Support. ❑ Check that the computer is plugged into a power sour ce and that it is turned on.
Remove the f loppy disk drive, port r eplicator , PC car d, and any other peripheral devices. fr om the computer . T urn the computer off a nd then turn it on again. T urn on the computer and pr ess the F2 key when the Sony logo appears. The BIOS setup menu scr een appears.
❑ T ry restar ting the computer . On the W indo ws taskbar , click the Start button, click Shut Do wn, and then click Restart th e computer . ❑ If you cannot r estart as described in the pr eceding step, you can restart the computer by pr essing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
❑ Some titles require specific files that are located on the application’s CD-ROM disc. Insert the disc and try starting the pr ogram again. ❑ Make sur e you place the disc in the tray with the label side facing up. ❑ The diskette is write-protected.
❑ Check that the phon e number the pro gram is dialing is correct. ❑ Check that the so ftware you are using is compatible w ith the notebook computer modem. (A ll preinstalled pr ograms ar e compatible.) Call the software publisher or Sony Onlin e Support.
It is best to shut down your com puter using the Shut Dow n command on the W indows 98 St art menu. Using oth er methods, includin g those listed here, may r esult in loss of uns aved data. If the Shut Down command does not work properly , follow these steps: ❑ Restart the computer by pr essing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
Using the Syste m and A pplication Re covery CDs The following sections describe how to use the System Recovery and Application Recovery utilities. Y ou need to connect the optional PCGA- CD5 CD-ROM drive to use the System and Application Recovery CDs.
1 Insert the Sony System Reco very CD in the CD-ROM drive. 2 Shut down your computer as described in “Shutting Down Y our Computer” on page 13 . 3 W ait four seconds and turn on yo ur computer . 4 Click OK to signify you have re ad and a ccept the Microso ft End-User License Agreement.
The Application R ecovery CDs allow you to reinstall individu al applications and device drivers if they are corrupted or accidentally erased. Reinstalling an individual device driver or softwar e title may corr ect a problem you are experiencin g with your computer , and you may not need to reco ver the entir e contents o f your har d drive.

Notes on Use This section describes safety guidelines and precautions to help pr otect your compu ter from potential damage. ❑ Do not leave the LCD facing the sun as it can damage the LCD . Be caref ul when using the computer near a windo w . ❑ Do not scratch th e LCD or exert pre ssure on it.
❑ T o disconnect the cord, pull it out by the plug. Never pull the cor d itse lf . ❑ Unplug your com puter from the wall outlet if you wi ll not be using the computer fo r a long time. ❑ When the AC adapter is not used , unplug it from the AC o utlet.
❑ The computer uses high-fr equency radio signals and may ca use interfer ence to radio or TV r eception. Sho uld this occur , relocate the computer a suitable distanc e away fr om the set. ❑ Use only specified peripheral equipment an d interface cables; otherwise, problems may result.
❑ Fingerprints and dust on the surf ace of a disc may cause r ead erro rs. Proper care of the disc is essential to ma intain its reliability . Do not use solvents such as benzine, thinner , commercially available clea ners or anti-static spray , as they may cause damage to the disc.
❑ Make sure to disconnect the AC adapter befor e cleaning the computer . ❑ A void rubbing the LCD screen as this can damage the scr een. Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the LCD screen. ❑ Clean the comput er with a soft cloth lightly moistened wi th a mild deterg ent solution.

Limited W arranty Statement The limited warranty on your S ony V A IO 505 SuperSlim Notebook covers parts and labor against d efects in material or workmanship for a period of three months from the original date of pur chase. Y ou can extend the warranty period f or an additional nine months by registering your computer .
This Limited W a rranty is no n-transferable. Proof of purchase in the form of a bill of sale (which is evidence that the Prod uct is within the warranty period) must be presented to obtain warranty service.
