VA I O ® Notebook Computer User Guide 8 Connecting a Power Source Y ou can use either AC power or a r echargeable battery pack as a power source. Using the AC Adapter 1 Slide the LCD lock lever in the direction of th e arrow as indicated below , and lift the cover .
Connecti ng a Power Source 9 Using Battery Power Y ou can use one or two battery packs as a source of power. The second battery pack inserts into the drive bay on the right side of the computer . (See “Using Power Saving Modes” on page 44.) Additional battery packs are a vailable as a separate option.

VA I O ® Notebook Computer User Guide 18 Using the Jog Dial Y our computer is equipped with a Jog Dial on the right side of the unit. Y ou can turn and/or press the Jog Dial to scroll the window , select a software application, adjust the internal speaker volume, etc.
Using the Jog Dial 19 Guide mode The Jog Dial is in the Guide mode when a software application or program is in use and the Jog Dial window is active. Some softwar e applications allow you to select an item fr om the selection list that displays in the List V iew mode using the Jog Dial.

Using the Keyboard 29 Combinations and Functions with the Fn Key Combinations/ Feature Function Fn+ (ESC) System Suspend Puts the system into System Suspend mode, a power management state. T o return the system to the active state, pre ss any key or press the powe r switch on your computer .

Using the T ouchpad 31 Using the T ouchpad The keyboar d contains a cursor-pointing device called a touchpad. Y ou can point to, select, drag, and scr oll objects on the screen using the built-in touchpad. Action Description Point Slide one finger on the touchpad to place the pointer on an item or object.
VA I O ® Notebook Computer User Guide 32 Using the Floppy Disk Drive Y ou can use the supplied floppy disk drive either as an external drive or as an internal drive in the drive bay . Y ou do not need to shut down the computer before connecting the floppy disk drive.
Using the Floppy Disk Drive 33 T o use as an internal drive 1 If another device is in the multipurpose bay , remove the device. See “T o remove the floppy disk drive” on page 34 or “T o r emove the second battery pack” on page 47. 2 Insert the floppy disk drive into the multipurpose bay with the V AIO logo facing up.

When using an external drive, choose, “Remove external FDD” instead.
Using the DVD-ROM Drive 35 Using the DVD-ROM Drive Y our computer comes with a DVD-ROM drive. Y ou can play both DVDs and CDs. T o insert a disc 1 T urn on the computer . 2 Press the E ject button to open the DVD-ROM drive. The tray slides out. 3 Place a DVD or CD in the tray with the label side facing up.

Using PC Cards 39 2 Remove the PC car d slot protector . When you use a T ype III PC card, you need to r emove both the top and bottom PC car d slot protectors. 3 Insert the PC card into the PC car d slot, front label facing up. Gently push the car d into the slot until the card is fixed into the connector .

Using Smart Connect 41 Using Smart Connect The pr einstalled Smart Connect softwar e allows you to use an i.LINK cable (not supplied) to connect your V AIO Notebook Computer to another V AIO computer that also has Smart Connect. Y ou can then use one computer to copy , and edit files on the other computer .

Y ou can use this port to communicate with other infrar ed-equipped devices with compatible pr otocols, such as a digital still camera or other compute rs.

Using Power Saving M odes 45 System Suspend Mode The computer saves the cur rent state of the system in RAM and switch es of f power to the CPU. The r ed power indicator light flashes in this mode. T o activate System Suspend mode Press Fn +Esc, or press t he power button and r elease it immediately .

Connecting the Min i Docking Station 51 Left Right Before connecting the Mini Docking Station Y ou need to plug the cable attached to the AC adap ter into the DC IN connector on the Mini Docking Station. Plug the power cord into the AC adapter and an electrical outlet.

Many factors influence modem conn ection speed, including telephone line noise or compatibility with telephone equipment (such as fax machines or other mode m s).
T roubleshooting 79 I cannot use DV de vices. The messa ge “DV equipm ent seems to be disconne cted or turned off” appears. ❑ Check that the DV device is turned on and that the cables ar e properly connected. ❑ If you are using multiple i.LINK devices, the combination of the connected devices may cause unstable operation.

In Sony Notebook Setup, select the Printer tab. If the printer port mode is set to ECP , change it to bi-dir ectional.

Using the System Recovery CD(s) Y ou can reinstall softwar e titles that shipped with your com puter if they are corrupted or accidentally erased.
