Chapter 1 Introduction We l c o m e V egas® Movie Studio HD Platinum soft ware from Son y Cr eative S oftwa re Inc. is a n innovative and adva nced multitrack media-editing system.
Getting help This Quick Star t Manual is intend ed to help you learn the basic sk ills you need to create a V egas M ovie Studio HD Platinum proj ect. If you need more assistance, w e provide three varieties of help in the application. Online help Choose Co nte n ts and Inde x from the Help menu or press F1.
Over view The follo wing sections provide a graphical tour of the Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum workspace. Main window The main window appears when you open th e software. The work area is divided into thr ee primar y areas: the track list, the time line (track view), and the window docking area.
Tim e d is p la y The Time Displa y window reflects the cursor’ s position on the timeline and the end point of a time selection. Y ou can customize time display settings, including what time format the window display s a nd which colors are used in the display .
Marker bar The marker bar is the area wher e you can place , name, and position markers and regions along the project’ s timeline. These informational tags can serve as cu es or reminders highlighting import ant events in your project. For more information, see Adding project markers and regions on p age 41 .
Explorer window - Alt+1 The Explorer window is similar to the W indows Explorer . Use the Explorer window to select media files to drag to the project timeline or add to the Pr o ject Media list.
Mixer window - Alt+3 The Mixer window gives you ac ces s to your project’ s audio proper ties and output levels. Video Pr eview window - Alt+4 The Video P review window displays a project’ s video during project editing and playback . For more information, see Playing your project on page 27 .
Project Medi a window - Alt+5 The Pr ojec t Media window helps you organize the media files you ’ re using in a pr ojec t. The information about these files is displayed in a highly flex ible database that can be instantly sor ted.
Media Generators window - Alt+9 The Media Generators window contains the diff erent media generators provided. Media generators make it easy to create even ts containing text, credit rolls, test pattern s, color gradients, and solid color backgrounds.

Chapter 2 Getting Star ted V egas® Movie Studio HD Platinum software is a new way of creating multimedia productions. Whether you ar e an experienced multimedia author o r a budding novice, the po werful features and capabilities of V egas Movie Studio HD Platinum software are organized to incr ease your creativity and productivity .
c. Select t he Manage pr oject files check box if you w ant your project media to be saved in the project folder . When this check box is selected, the following files will be stored in subfolders below the project folder: • Aud io reco rdi ngs . • Files that you capture or import from a video camera, still camera or scanner , or audio CD .
Using the P roject Media window Media files, both video and audio , tend to be the largest files on your hard driv e. I t is therefore not always easy to mov e the m around and impractical to store multiple copies of these files . Y ou can add media files to the Pr oject Media l ist to organize t hem before any editing begins .
Importing video from a DVD camcorder Fro m t he Proje c t menu, choose Impor t DVD Camcorder Disc to import video from a finalized S ony DVD Handy c am® camcorder disc. Notes: • Before importing video, you’ll need to fi nalize the disc. F or information about finalizing a disc, please refer to your camcor der’ s documentation.
4. Capture your video. For information about c apturing video, see the V egas Mo vie Studio HD Platinum online help. T o access help, choose Contents and Index from the Hel p menu . When you ’r e finished capturing, your clip is sa ved to the folder specified in the Capture folder box on the Clip Edit tab.
Extrac ting audio from a CD Y ou can extrac t tracks from a CD and add them t o the Project Media window as .wa v files. Important: Ve gas Movie Studio HD Platinum software is not intended for, and should not be used for , illegal or infringing purposes, such as the illegal cop ying or sharing of copyrighted materials.
Sorting media with bins The detailed view of the P roject Media window helps you sort your media files using their attributes, but for mor e control , you can create bins. Bins are folders within pr ojec ts that you can use to or ganize your media files.
Double -click ing a media file This method places the event at the cursor’ s position in the selected track . If the selec ted track is a video track, and you do uble -click an audio event (or vice versa), a new track is created for the even t.
4. Use the Pictur es tab to arrange your slides as needed: a. If you need to rotate pictures, you can select a photo and clic k the Rotate Counterclockwise ( ) o r Rotate C lockwise ( ) button. Y ou can also rotate multiple selec ted photos at once. b.
W ork ing with even ts Events are the most basic objects in a project. An event is so mething that happens in time, has a specific duration, and can be video or audio. Understanding files and events The objects you work with are r eferred to as media files and ev ents.
2. Release the mouse to place the event. Moving multiple events Y ou can move multiple events along the timeline within a track or mo ve them to a different track. Selected events do not need t o be within the same track. Use the Ctrl key , the Shift key , or the Sele ction Edit T ool ( ) to select multiple events and drag them.
Changing track height Y ou can change the height of individual tracks by dragging their borders in the track list. I n the example below , the main vide o track is fairly large to show the details of the scene while the two tracks abov e it, which are overla ys, hav e been resized to a shor ter height.
Button or Control Na me Descriptio n Solo Isolates a track for playback by muting the other tracks. V olume fader Controls the audio track volume r ela tive to the other tracks . Drag the fader left or right to adjust the volume. Pan slider F unctions as a trim control that adjusts the overall panning of the track.
Scrubbing Scrubbing is a type of timel ine playback that gives you precise control over the speed and direction of playback. Both l inear a nd logarithmic scale scrubbing are allowed. The use of multimedia controllers is suppor ted for scrubbing. F or more information on using the software with multimedia controllers , please see the online help.
Chapter 3 Basic Editing T echniques V egas® Movie Studio HD Platinum projects are multitrack compilations of events that oc cur over time . The events in your project are refer ences (pointers) to source media files .
Making selections Y ou can select one or more even ts, a time range , or events and a time range. All selection options can apply to a single track or t o multiple tracks. T o selec t an event, click it. Selecting multiple events Y ou can selec t multiple events in your project using several methods.
). Selec ting a block of events 1. Click the Select ion Edit T ool button ( 2. Position the cu rsor in a corner of the ar ea that you want to select. 3. Click and ho ld the left mouse butt on. 4. Drag the cursor to the opposite corner of the area you want to select.
Dragging to select a time range 1. Position the mouse point er ab ove the ruler (on the marker bar) . The mouse pointer changes to a lef t/right arrow cursor ( 2. Drag to select a region. All events, or portions of events within the region, are highlighted.
Cop ying selected eve nts When copied, selected events are reproduc ed and placed on th e clipboard. Time inf or mation is also placed on the clipboard. Events befor e copy Clipboard contents Events after cop y The original e vents are not affected and do not change.
Cutting selected events When cut, selected events are remo ved from the timeline and placed on the clipboar d. Time inf o rmation is also placed on the clipboard.
1. Move the cursor to the desired location on t he timeline. 2. Click either the track number or within the track where you want t o paste the event. This track is the f ocus track ; there can b e only one f ocus track at a time. Note: If you are pasting multip le events from differ ent trac ks, new tr acks are automatically created as needed .
Punching-in and crossfading ev ents Y ou can inser t events into the middle of (on top of ) existing ev ents without altering the timing of the pr oject. When the inser ted event ends, the original event c onti nues playing as if it had never st o pped.
T rimming an event beyond its end Y ou can trim an event beyond its end, extending it as a result. Once e xtended, the event loops b y default. A notch indicates wh ere the looped event repeats. Alternately , you can turn looping off and make the last frame of an event ’ s media repeat for the duration of the event (a freez e frame).
Splitting a n even t 1. Select the events to be split. F or more information, see Making selections on page 30 . 2. Place the cursor at the timeline position where the split will occur . 3. Fro m t he Edit menu, choose Split , or press S. The selected events are split at the cursor position.
Splitting and trimming events Hold Ctrl+Alt+Shif t and click an event to split it. Hold Ctrl+Alt + Shift and drag an event to split it at th e point you click an d trim the event in the direction you drag. The cursor changes to the split-trim cursor ( ).
Changing crossfade curves Y ou can change the crossfade cur ves that are used to fade in and out between two events . Right-click a crossfade to choose a differen t crossfade curve 1. Right-clic k anywhere in the crossfade region to display a shortcut menu.
Adding pr ojec t markers and regions Several types of project markers are provided that iden tify part s of your project, serve as cues, and provide additional functi onality: • Markers ar e points that you mark along the project’ s timeline. They are typically used to mark locations in the project for later refer ence or to mark timing cues.
Navigating to markers Y ou can jump the cursor to any marker on the timeline by clicki n g the marker . Y ou can also jump to a marker by pressing the number keys along the top of the keyboard ( not the numeric keypad). Tip : Jump the cursor to the next or previous marker by pressing Ctrl+Right Arrow or Ctrl+Left Arro w .
Naming regions 1. Place the mouse pointer on the left region marker you want t o name or rename. The point er changes to a hand icon ( ). 2. Right- click to display a shor tcut menu. 3. Fr o m the shortcut menu, choose Rename . A text box appears next to the region marker .
Using an external audio editing program The V egas Movie Studio HD Platinum timeline is a nondestruc tive editing envir onment, which means that the original source files remain unchanged by any editing done in th e software.
Chapter 4 Adding T ransitions , V i deo Eff ec ts, and T itles Adding transitions From t he Vie w menu, choose Tr a n s i t i o n s to display or hide the T ransitions window. Use this window to choose and preview transition eff ec ts that you can use to control how a video event begins or ends , or to change the way one event flows into another .
4. After you’ ve found the setting that y ou want to use, dr ag it to the a transition on one of the selected events. The new transit ion will replace all existing transitions in the selected events.
Adding video eff ec ts There are sev eral metho ds available for applying effects to video . Video plug-ins can be applied to tracks, video events, sour c e media files (via the Project Media window), or to the entire video p roject.
Edit existing video eff ec ts 1. Click the FX button ( Plug-in ch ain Click a plug-in to modify its se ttings in the lower part of the window . Clear the check box on a plug-in to bypass it. Dr ag a pl ug-in to move it within the chain. ) in the location where y ou want to edit video effects.
Adding titles , tex t, and credits Most video projects include titles and cred its. Y ou can us e the Titles & T ext plu g-in to create static and animated text and th e Credit Roll plug-in to create scrolling credits. Adding titles and te xt 1. Chapter 5 Ster eoscopic 3D E diting Y ou can use Vegas® Movie Studio HD Platinum to edit stereoscopic 3D (S3D ) projects without any add-ons or additional tool s. Editing a stereoscopic 3D project is just like editing a stan dard V egas Movie Studio HD Platin um project and requires minimal adjustment to your workflow: 1.
Setting Line alter nate Description Choose this setting when your project will be displayed on a line-alternate 3D monit or . Left- and right-eye views ar e interlaced using half of the availa ble ver tical resolution.
Setting up stereoscopic 3D preview s If your project uses the anaglyphic (red/cyan) stereoscopic 3D mode, y ou can use anagly phic 3D glasses to view your 3D project in the Video Pr eview window .
2. Use one of the following methods to align the audio and video so the video output is synchronized . • If you used a slate or a loud clap for your synchronization po in t, you can align the ev e nts to within a fr ame of each other using the audio waveforms: a.
5. Delete the audio and video tracks you created in st ep 1. After synchronizing the events , you will have a paired stereosc o pic subclip in the Pr oject Media window .
Rendering a stereoscopic 3D pr ojec t When you render y our projec t, the Stereoscopic 3D mode setting from the Vide o tab in the Project Properties dial og is used by default.
9. Save your template for future use: a. T ype a name in th e Te m p l a t e box to identify yo ur rendering template . b. Click the Save T emplate button ( ). c. Click OK to return to the Render As d ialog. 10. Click Save to re nde r your proje ct usi ng you r new temp late.

Chapter 6 Recor ding Audio and A dding Audio Effe c ts Recor ding audio V egas® Movie Studio HD Platinum software can record audio into multiple mono or stereo tracks while simultaneously playing back existing audio and video tr acks. Y ou are limited only by the performance of your computer system and audio hardware.
Adding audio eff e cts Y ou can use effec ts to manipulate the audio components of your project. The included audio plug -ins can improve the quality of the audio in your pr oject or create unique sounds. V egas M ovie Studio HD Platinum soft ware supports additional DirectX and VST effect s from a variety of vendors.
Adding audio ev ent effects Fro m t he To o l s menu, choose Audi o , and choose Audi o Ev ent FX from the submenu to ap ply or edit DirectX or VST plug-ins at the event lev el. Event-level plug-ins are applied only to the ev ent where they are applied .

Chapter 7 5.1 Surround T o give your projects a more professional feel, you can create your movies with 5.1 surround sound. Tip : V egas Movie Studio HD Platinum softwar e can be used to create 5.1 surrou nd audio fo r DVD Archi tect Studi o projects .
Assigning tracks to surround channels Each track can be assigned to the front, center , LFE, or rear channels, or you can pan a track freely within the so undfield.
Changing the pan mode Right-click the surround pan ner on a track, choose Pa n Typ e from the shortcut menu, and th en choose a pan type from the submenu. F or more information about panning modes, see the online help (from the V egas Movie Studio HD Platinum Help menu, choose Contents and Index ).

Chapter 8 Saving and Rendering P rojects What do you do af ter you’ve ad ded t he f inal tou ches to you r movie and it ’ s ready to be shown to the world? V egas® Movie Studio HD Platinum software allows you to easily save and render your projects so you can amaze y our family and friends .
Share it online 1. Click the Share it online button. T he Publish Setup dialog is displayed The P u blish Setup dialog is displayed to allow y ou to select the W eb site where you w ant to share your mo vie.
11. When rendering is complete , a dialog displays the path s to your rendered audio and video files. Click the Send to DVD Archite ct Studio button to start the appl ication and crea t e a new pr oject con taining y our movie. 12. Use DVD Architect Studio so ftware to create and burn the DVD.
Burn it to a Blu-ray Disc with menus 1. Click the Burn it to a DVD or Blu-ray Disc button. 2. Select t he Blu-ray Disc with Menus radio button, and then click Nex t. The Make Movie - Render Settings dialog is displayed. Note: The Blu-ray Disc with Menus setting is not available when w orking with 5.
Save i t to you r DV came ra 1. If you want to print only a por tion of your project, create a time selection that incl udes the section of your projec t. 2. In the Make Movie Wizard , click the Save it to m y camera or por table device butt on. 3. Select th e DV camera radio button, and then click Next.
7. Use the Device Con trol dialog to indicate whether V egas Movie St udio HD Platinum will hav e control of your DV r ecorder and how you want to print to tape: Setting Description Manual Select this radio button if the application is unable to obtain device control of your deck.
6. Choose render settings: a. Select th e Render format radio butt on. b. In the Fi le p at h b ox, type the path to the file you want to render , or click t he Browse button to browse to the folder you want to use and then type a file name. c. Fro m t he Te m p l a t e drop- down l ist, choose the s etting that matches yo ur destination format.
7. Select th e Stretch video to fil l output frame size (do n ot letterbox) check box if you want to reformat your video so it fills the output frame size listed in the Description box. When the check box is cleared , the current aspec t ratio is main tained and black borders are added to fill the extra frame area (letterboxing).
Rendering projects Rendering refers to the process of crea ting a new media file from a V egas Movie Studio HD Pla t inum project. T he project file is not affected (over written, deleted, or altered) durin g the rendering process. Y ou can return to the original project to make edits or adjustments and render it again.
6. Click the Render button. A dialog is displayed to show rendering progress. 7. When rendering is c omplete, click the Op en button to play the file with its associated player , or click Open Folder to open the folder where y o u saved the file . Tip : For an easy w ay to render and deliver your final movie , try the Make Movie Wizard.
