1 1 Intr oduction Thank you for ch oosing Aspi re easyStore H340. The Aspire easyStore H340 is a data storage and digital media content server for your digital home.

2 Setting up the system 16 Connect to the home network Important: Conn ect the Aspire easyStore H34 0 to your broadb and router with a network cable. Wireless connection to your broadband router is not su pported. However, home comp uters that are connected through a wireless co nnection is supported.
17 Power on the system After making sure that you have set up the system properly and connecte d all the req uired cables , you can now power on the system. Press the power button to t urn system on. The LED indica tors on the front panel will flash, change colo rs and turn to solid blue after startup.
2 Setting up the system 18 Install the Windows Home Server Connector on the first computer After setting up your Aspire ea syStore H340, you must install the Windows Home Server Conn ector on your computer. Note: Prior to installing the Windows Ho me Server Connector, make sure you have administrator privileges.
19 2 Click Next . 3 Click Install to begin the installation pr ocess. The Mi crosoft .N et Framewor k 2.0 and Windows I n staller 3.1 components are installed.

21 4 Click Next . 5 Click Next . 6 Sel ect the “Download th e updates from my home ser ver and install them automatically” op tion button if you want to download the updates for the Connector.
2 Setting up the system 22 7 Click Next . 8 Select the “Yes, wake up this computer if it is in sleep or hibernate mode and back it up ” option butto n if you want Windows Home Server to wake up your sleeping computer to back it up.
23 10 Click Next to perform an initia l config uration of the home server. Note: The initial configuration of the home server is performed once on the first ho me computer. 11 Click the Next arrow. The Wi ndows Home Server initializati on begins and could take several ho urs dependi ng on your hardware.
2 Setting up the system 24 12 Onc e the initialization is c ompleted, click the Next arrow. 13 Enter a name for your home server. The name of your home server can contain a maximum of 15 characters (includes letters, number s or hyphens) with no spaces.
25 15 Enter a strong Windows Home Server administrator password, confirmation passwor d, and a p asswo rd hint. This is the password that you can use to manage you r home server from the Windows Home Server Console.
2 Setting up the system 26 16 Click the Next arrow. 17 Select the “On (recommended)” opti on button if you want to use Windows Update to automatically downl oad and install updates for Windows Home Serv er, then click the Next arrow.
27 18 Cho ose if you want to particip ate in the Customer Experience Improvement program, then click the Next arrow. 19 Choose if you want to participa te in the Window s Error Reporting program, then click the Next arrow.
2 Setting up the system 28 20 Click the Next arrow to automatically downl oad and install available Windows Home Server up dates. This could take some time to complete but will not n eed additional information from you. Important: Do not restart or turn off your home server during the update process.
29 22 Click the Next arrow. The Wind ows Home Server log in wi ndow displays. You can no w manage the home server through the remote admin console. 23 Enter the administrator pa ssword, then click the Next arrow. The Setting Passwor d dialog box ap pears.
2 Setting up the system 30 24 Enter the administrator password to start the hardware health and performance monitor se rvice, then clic k OK . The Windows Home Server Console window appears. The Windows Home Server icon also appears in the system task tray and the Shared Folders desktop shortcut appears on your desktop.
31 Install the Windows Home Server Connector on the client computers After installing the Windows Home Server Connector on the first computer, use the Aspire easyStore H3 40 Software Inst allation Disc to install the Windows Home Serve r Connector on the computers you want to connect to your home server.
2 Setting up the system 32 4 After the components ar e install ed, the Windows Home Server Connector installation starts to find and co nnect to your home server. Once the home server is found, the Welcome window appears. 5 Click Next . 6 Read the End-Use r License Agreem ent.
33 To install the Windows Home Server conn ector directly from the home server 1 Open a Web browser. 2 In the address bar, enter http://Aspirehome:55000/, where “Aspirehome” is the name of the home server. 3 Under Windows Home Server Connector Setup, click Download Now .
2 Setting up the system 34 Connect to the Home Server Console In order to remotely administer the home server, you ne ed to log onto the Windows Home Server Console.
35 To log onto the home server using Windows Home Server icon: 1 Right-click on the Windows Home Server icon in the system tray, then select Windows Home Server Console from the pop-up menu. Or, Double-click the Windows Home Server icon in the system tray.

37 3 W indows Home Server Console The Windows Home Server C onsole is a tool that provides remote management of the home server and allows you to mon itor and backup computers on the home netw ork. It allows you to remotely administer your home server from anywhere on the home network.
3 Windows Ho me Server Co nsole 38 Computers & Backup You can use the Compute rs & Backup tab on the Wind ows Home Server Console to view the home computers connecte d to the home server and monitor the health st atus of the home computers and administer backups.
39 User Accounts You can use the User Accounts ta b on the Windows Home Server Console to create a persona l user acco unt , enable a guest account, and maintain user accounts on the home server. The options on the User Accounts tab allow you to: • Add - Create a new user account on the home server and set access rights for the user.
3 Windows Ho me Server Co nsole 40 Shared Folders You can use the Shared Folders t a b on the Windows Home Server Console to add , open, remove, and view shared folders on the home server. With Shared Fold ers you can centrally stor e files on your home server so that you ca n share with other people on your home network.
41 The options on the Shared Folders tab allow yo u to: • Add - Create a new shared folder on the home server. • Properties - View and change shared folder properties. • Open - Browse files and fold ers in the shared folder. • Remove - Delete an existing folder from the home server.
3 Windows Ho me Server Co nsole 42 Server Storage The Server Storage tab on the Wind ows Home Server Console displays all the hard drive s installed on yo ur home se rver. You can use Server Storage to view, add, repair, and remove hard drives from the home server.
43 Lights Out Lights Out is a power man agement add- in software that allows you to set the home server into suspe nd mode or wake the system at a chosen time with the aid of a calendar event. The Lights Out tab include t he following op tions: • Refresh - Ensures you have the most resent version of the uptime diagram.
3 Windows Ho me Server Co nsole 44 McAfee Total Protection McAfee Total Pr otection is an add-in software fo r Windows Home Server. It is a com prehensive security manageme nt solution that checks for viruses, spyware, unwante d programs , and other poten tial threats on the hom e server.
45 System Information The System Information tab on th e Windows Home Server Console provides an all ar ound monit oring mechanism to help you keep an eye on the home server’s health and performance de tails.
3 Windows Ho me Server Co nsole 46 • Remotely Wake Up Aspire easyStor e Home Serve r - Allows you to enable or disable remote wakeup feature. • Hardware Performance and Health Monitor - Allows you to view the performance data of the home server, and monitor the temperature, voltage and fan speed.
47 Network Health The Network Health tab displays h ealth notifications from your home server and your home computers. You can view the he alth of your entire network from one convenient location so you can take the necessary actions to corr ect any problems.

49 Settings The Settings button on the upp er right hand corner of the Windows Home Server Console windo w allows you to configure your home server settings.

51 Backup The Backup settings page all ows you to configure the st art and end time for backing up computers on the home ne twor k, specify the number of months, weeks, and days to ke ep backups on the home server, and manu ally clean up ol d backups.

53 Media Sharing The Media Sharing setti ngs page al lows you to enable or disabl e Windows Home Server media sharing capabilities . For information, click the Help butt on on the lower right hand co rner of the Media Shar ing page.

For more information, click the Help button on the lower right hand corner of the IP Co nfiguration page.
57 Lights Out Use the Lights Out page to define times where the hom e server has to go to suspend or resume mode. In the Lights Out page, you can co nfigure the fo llowing set tings: • Client com puter monito ring - Cli ent computer monitoring is used to check periodically for active cl ients.

59 Settings for DMS The Settings for DMS (Digital Media Se rver) page allows you to enable or disable digital media server function and customize the sorting method of photos and videos.

61 Resources You can use the Resources page to view the fo llowing information about your home server: • Microsoft Windows - Activates Wi ndows Home Server and allows you to view the Microsof t Software License Terms. • Home Server - Displays informa tion about your home server hardware.

4 Managing the server 64 Create user accounts After you complete Windows Home Server Setup and install the Windows Home Server Connector so f tware on all of your home computers, you are ready to set up your user accounts for th e people in your househol d.
65 3 Click the User Accounts tab. 4 Under About Guests, click Enable Guest . Caution: If you h ave a wireless network, secure it before you enable the guest account wi th no password. For more information, see the documentation for your wireless device.
4 Managing the server 66 To add a personal user account: Note: A personal shared folder is created each time you add a new user account. By default, only th is user account has access to the personal shared folder. Users can store personal files in this personal shared folder.
67 7 Click Add . 8 Enter the user’s na me. Note: When you create user accounts on Wind ows Home Server, use logon na mes that matc h the logon names of your e xisting user account s on your ho me compute rs. Also, use the same password that you use for your existing user accounts.

69 Add a shared folder Shared folders are places for you to organize and store files on the home server so that you can share them with other people on your home network. 1 Double-cl ick the Windows Home Server icon in the sy stem tray. 2 Log on to the Windows Home Server Console .

71 Configure backup for home computers You can customiz e the backup of eac h of your home computers f rom the Windows Home Server Console. Note: After you install the Windows Home Server Connector to the home computer a ll hard drive volum es on the home comp uter are automatically backed up e ach night.
4 Managing the server 72 Back up the home server You can back up your home server to en sure th at you have backup copies of important files that ar e locate d in your Windows Ho me Server shared folders and applicatio n folders. You can add hard drives to your home server to use fo r server backups by using the Server Storage tab.

4 Managing the server 74 9 Select if you want to preserve or for mat the hard drive, then click Next . 10 Enter a name for the hard drive, then click Next . Note: You can write this name on a lab el and attach it to your hard drive to help you identify it later.
75 12 Click Done . 13 Click the Computers & Bac kup tab. 14 Select th e Server B ackup Hard Dr ive you want to use to back up your shared folders an d application folders. 15 Click Backup Now . 16 Select a destination hard drive for each shared folder.
4 Managing the server 76 Configure the home server for remote access You must config ure your home server for remote access to easily access your files and home computers fro m anywhere with an Internet connection. You c an download files, upload files, connect to your home computers, and administer the home server.

79 Access the Aspire easyStore H340 home page After you configure a user account for remote access, you can use a Web browser on a computer that is outside your home to remotely access your home server an d home computer. On the Aspire easyStore H340 home page, you can perform the following: • Remotely access the Window s Home Server Con sole.
4 Managing the server 80 5 Enter your home server user name and password. 6 Click Log On . The home page inclu de three tabs: • Home - This page appears every time you log on to the Web page. • Computers - Al lows you to perf orm remote administration on the home server and the home computers.
81 Access the shared folders on the home server There are several ways you can ac cess your shared folders on the home server. To access the shared fo lders using the desktop shortcut: 1 Double-cl ick the Shared Folders deskt op shortcut to see the shared folders that are on your home server.
4 Managing the server 82 To access the shared fold ers using the Windows Home Server icon: 1 Righ t-click the Windows Home Server icon . 2 Click Shared Folders .
83 To access the shared fo lders using th e Internet: 1 Log on to the Aspire easyStor e H340 home page. See “Access the Aspire easyStore H340 home page” on page 79. 2 Click the Shared Folders tab. 3 You can navigate to a particular shared folder, then download or upload files to yo ur home s erver.
4 Managing the server 84 Enable media sharing The Windows Home Server allows yo u to stream music, photos, and videos from the home server to an y supported digital media rece iver, such as an Xbox 36 0, or to a supp orted digital media player, such as Windows Medi a Player 11.
85 Enable Digital Media Server The Digital Media Server feature allo ws you to browse, access and play media contents on the home server . It makes possible for iTunes and Xbox 360 users to share media files on the home server.

87 Enable iTunes service The Digital Media Server feature allo ws you to enab le or disable th e iTunes server func tion, sp ecify how often the music library is upda ted, set a password to secur e the iTunes Server access. To enable i Tunes service : 1 Double-cl ick the Windows Home Server icon in the sy stem tray.
4 Managing the server 88 Stream audio You can use Windows Me dia Player 11 or iTunes to play music files stored on the home server to your computer. To stream audio in Windows Media Player 11: 1 Make sure that media shar ing is enabled. Refer to “Enable media sharing” on page 84 for more information.

91 Using the one-touch USB backup feature The USB backup button on the front panel allows yo u to backup data from a USB storage device to the ho me server.

99 Monitor server health and performance Your system includes a Hardware Health and Pe rformance Monitor feature to help you keep a close eye on the syst em health of the home server.
4 Managing the server 100 Set up email alerts You can set up an automatic email no tification to pr ovide alerts in the event of warnings or errors relate d to temperat ures, fan speeds, or hard drive occur red. To validate th e email alerting feature, you must also configure SMTP setup.
101 6 Under Launch SM T P Setup, click Settings . The Internet Accounts dia log bo x include the fo llowing option s: • Remove - Deletes an Internet Mail Account. • Properties - Displays the Properti es dialog box. This dialog box lets you config ure the propertie s of established connections.

103 10 Enter the SMTP server inf ormation, then click Next . Note: If you do not know y our incoming and outgo ing SMTP server name, contact your ISP (Intern et service provider).
4 Managing the server 104 11 Enter the account name and passwor d your ISP has given you, then click Next . Note: Select the “Log On Using Secure Password Au thentication (SPA)” check box if your ISP requires you to use Secu re Password Authentication to access your mail account.
105 Explore the Windows Home Server icon The Windows Home Server i con no tifies you about the hea lth and status of the home server and your home computers. Th is includes notifications about user accoun t password mismatches, software upgrades, and backup s tatus.

107 5 Configuring the har d disk drive The system supports up to four 3.5-inch hot-swappable SATA hard disk drives. Warning: The first hard drive, lo cated on the bottom of the HDD bay, is not hot-swappable. Adding a hard disk drive Caution: Hard dr ives are formatted before they are added to the server storage.
5 Configuring the hard disk drive 108 (2) Re move the HDD carrier by pres sing the HDD carrier latch (1). (3) Pull t he lever (2) and slide the HDD carrier from the chassis (3). (4) Insert the new drive into the ri ght side of the carrier aligning the pins into the HDD’s mounting holes (1).
109 (6) With the lever still extended, sl ide the car rier all the way in to the drive bay (1). Do not pu sh on the lever until i t begins to close by itself. (7) Use the lever to push the carrier until it docks in to place, then close the lever (2 ).
5 Configuring the hard disk drive 110 (3) Click the Server Storage tab. (4) Select the newly installed hard drive (either internal or external), then click Add to run the A dd a Hard Drive Wizard.
