4 Getting started SIM card and battery information It may take up to 30 minutes before an icon appears when charging if the battery is completely discharged. 1. Insert the SIM card. Make sure the SIM card is placed under the metal clips. 2. Place the battery on the ba ck of the phone with the connectors facing each other (label side up).
Getting started 5 Holding the Phone Hold your mobile phone as you would any other telephone. Internal Antenna Y our phone is equipped with an internal antenna. For best reception, try to hold your phone so your hand does not cover the internal antenna.

Calling 25 T o use your speakerphone on a call Y ou can use your phone as a speakerphone during a call, for example, when you want others to participate in a conversation or when yo u need to have your hands free during the call. Y our sp eakerphone works best in a quiet environment.
26 Calling Emergency calls T o make an emergency call • Enter 91 1, YES . Y our phone supports the international emergency numbers, 1 12, 911 and 08. This means that these numbers can normally be us ed to make an emergency call in any country , with or without a SIM card inserted, if a GSM netw ork is within range.
Calling 27 Receiving calls When you receive a call, the phone rings and Answer? appears. If the number is a restricted number , W ithheld or Unknown appears. T o answer a call •P r e s s YES . T o reject a call •P r e s s NO . T o mute the ringer • Press the upper or lower side volume key .
28 Calling Phonebook There are two locations used for storing contact information (names, phone nu mbers, email addresses, etc.) - the SIM card a nd the phone’ s internal phonebook. Information on the SIM card is more portable since you can eas ily move your SIM card from one phone to another .
Calling 29 T o add a picture to a phonebook contact 1. Scroll to Phonebook , YES , Pictures , YES . 2. Enter the first letters of the contact, YES . 3. When the contact is highlighted, press YES . 4. This takes you to My Pictur es . Select a picture and press YES twice.
30 Calling T o edit a contact 1. Y ou can edit a contact that is stored on your phone or that is stored on your SIM card. Scroll to Phonebook , YES , Manage SIM , YES , Edit on SIM , YES (for an entry stored on your SIM card) OR Manage Contact , YES , Edit Contact , YES (for a contact stored on your phone).

Calling 35 T o redial using a voice command 1. From standby , press and hold a volume key for one second. 2. Lift the phone to your ear , wait for the tone and say “Redial”. The voice command is played back to you and the last dialed number is called.
36 Calling • The voice command was to o short – it should be around one second long and more than one syllable. • Y ou spoke too late or too soon – speak immediately after the tone. • Y ou did not record the voice command when the handsfree was attached – for voice control with a handsfree kit, record when the handsfree is attached.
Calling 37 More than one call Y ou can handle more than one call simultaneously . For example, you can put an ongoing call on hold, while you make or answer a second call, and then sw itch between the two calls. Note: During a call, the Ongoing Call menu r eplaces the Calls menu.
38 Calling Conference calls In a conference call, you can have a joint conversation with up to four other people. Y ou can also put a conference on hold and make another call. Creating a conference call T o create a conference call, you must first have one ongoing call and one call on hold.

42 Setting up Mobile Internet Set up with the wizard If your phone is not set up for W AP , you can ask your network operator or servi ce provider to provide you with W AP settings informatio n. Then you can simply use the wizard in your phone to help guide you through the relevant settings.

44 Setting up Mobile Internet GSM settings include some settings that are similar to GPRS settings and some that are GSM-specific as follows: • Phone Number – the phone number of your Internet service provider . • Data Rate – select the speed you want for the connection.
Setting up Mobile Internet 45 W AP profile settings The W AP settings are stored in a W AP profile. In most cases you only need to use one profile to access the Internet. Tip : If ther e ar e no data account or W AP profile settings in your phone, yo u can enter data account settings when you enter W AP profile settings.

Messaging 51 Before you start Make sure you have the following settings: • An address to your service center . • A specific W AP profile for picture messages. Note: Contact your network ope rator to automatically download settings or for mor e information.

Messaging 53 Email Y o u can use your phone to send and receive email messages via the Internet, as you would from a PC. Note: This Sony Ericsson phone supports email services using POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP pr otocols. Certain email services use pr oprietary systems that ar e not supported.

Although your phone can send attachments, you cannot receive attachments attached to emails.

Troubleshooting 67 T roubleshooting This chapter lists some problems that you might encounter while using your phone. Some problems require that you call your se rvice provider , but most of the problems you can ea sily correct yourself. The phone cannot be switched on Recharge or replace the battery .
