3 Prepare the phone To insert the SI M card and battery 1 Remove the batt ery cover. Slide the SIM card into its holder with the contacts fac ing down. 2 Insert the battery with the label side up and the connectors fac ing each other. Repla ce the battery cover as sh own in the pictur e.
4 Charge the battery 1 The phone battery is partly charged when you buy it. Connect the charger to th e phone. It takes approximately 2.5 hours to fully charge the battery. Press a key to illuminate the screen. 2 To remove the charg er, tilt the plug upwards.
5 Turn the phone on 1 Press and hold down . 2 Enter your PIN if reques ted. To correct mi stakes, select Delete . 3 Select OK . 4 Select a language. 5 Enter the time and date and select Save .
6 SIM and PIN SIM card The SIM (Subscriber Identi ty Modu le) card, which you get from your network operator, contains informatio n about your su bscription. Always turn off your phone and deta ch the charger before you insert or remove the SIM c ard.

9 Network coverage The network bars show the strength of the GSM network in your area. Try moving to anoth er location if you have trouble calling and network coverage is poor.
10 Screen icons These icons may appear on the screen. Icon Description Battery icon. A completely green icon means that the battery is fully charged You have missed a ca ll Divert calls is activated T.
11 Shortcuts From standby you can use the navi gation keys to go directly to a function: • Press to write a text or picture message. • Press to go to the camera. • Press to play the FM radio. • Press to go to your contac ts. To navigate the menus 1 From standby select Menu .
12 Calling You must turn on the phone and be within range of a network. To make a call 1 From standby enter the area code and phone number. 2 Press . To end a call • Press .
13 To make international calls 1 From standby press and hold down until a + sign appears on th e screen. 2 Enter the country code, area code (wit hout the first zero) and phone number. 3 Press . To view a missed call • When Missed call is displayed, sel ect Details .
14 Camera Your phon e has a d igital came ra to take pictures to save or send. Pictures take n with the camera are saved in Menu > Camera > Camera pics . The format is JPEG. To start the camera and take a picture 1 From standby press . Yo u can see the subject on the phone scree n.
15 Messaging Text messages (SMS) You must have a service centre numb er, which is supplied by your servic e provider and s aved on the S IM card. You may have to ent er the number yourself. See Troubleshooting on page 36. To write and send a text message 1 From standby press .
16 Picture messages (MMS) Picture m essages can contain t ext, sound a nd images. They are se nt using MMS to a mo bile phone. Yo u need the correct Internet settings in your phone to use this function. Se e Internet on page 32. To create a picture message 1 From standby press .
17 Contacts You can sav e contac ts in the pho ne memory o r on the SIM card. You can copy contacts from the phon e memory to the SIM ca rd or from t he SIM ca rd to the phone me mory. To add a contact 1 From standby select Contacts > Add contact .
18 To call a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Scroll to, or enter the f irst few lette rs of the conta ct. 3 Press . To edit a contact 1 From standby press . 2 Select a cont act. 3 Select Options > Edit . 4 Edit the inf ormation and select Options > Save contact .
19 Contacts memory The number of entries you can save in Contacts depends on the ca pacity of your SI M card. To check the Contacts memory status • From standby select Menu > C ontacts > Settings > Memory status . Speed dialling Speed dialling lets you sele ct nine contacts that you can dial quickly.
20 FM radio To listen to the FM radio 1 Connect the h andsfree to t he phone. 2 From standby press . To control the radio • Press or to searc h for FM radio channels. • Press or to change the volume. To save an FM radio channel • Press and ho ld down – .
21 Calendar To add an appointment in the Calendar 1 From standby select Menu > Extras > Calendar . 2 Scroll to a date and select Options > Add a note . 3 Enter your details and select Options > OK . 4 To confirm the date and time, se lect OK .
22 More functions Alarm The alarm rings even if the pho ne is set to silent or turned off. To set the alarm 1 From standby select Menu > Alarms . 2 Enter the time and select Save . 3 Select an option. • If Alarm is selected, select an alarm signal.
23 Entering text There are two met hods you c an use to enter te xt: multitap or T9™ text input. To change text input methods • When you write the messag e, press and hold down . To enter text using multitap • Press – until the desired character appears.
24 To add items in a text message • When you write the message, select Options > Add item . To add symbols in a text message • When you write the message, select Options > Add symbol . To delete characters • Select Clear . To change writing language • When you write t he message, press and hold down .
25 Diverting calls You can divert calls, fo r example, to an answering se rvice. To divert calls 1 From standby select Menu > Calls > Call settings > Divert all calls and select an option. 2 Select Activate . To cancel a call divert • From standby select Menu > Calls > Call settings > Divert all calls > Deactivate all .
26 To reject a second call • During the call, sele ct Busy and continue with the ongoing call. To make a second call 1 During the call, selec t Options > Hold call > Options > Call cont act . Your ongoing call is put on hold. 2 Select View contacts .
27 Voicemail Callers ca n leave a v oicemail mess age when you cannot answer. You can get your vo icemail numb er from y our network operator. To enter your voicemail number 1 From standby select Menu > Calls > Call settings > Set up voicem. > OK .
28 To set the vibrating alert • From standb y select Me nu > Settin gs > Sound & alerts > Vibration and select an option. To select a key sound • From standb y select Me nu > Settin gs > Sound & alerts > Key sound and sele ct an option.
29 To set the date 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > Time and date > Date > Set date . 2 Enter the date and selec t Save . To set the date format • From standby select Menu > Settings > Time and date > Date > Date format and select an option.
30 To turn the Bluetooth function on • From standby select Menu > Settings > Bluetooth > Turn on . To show or hide your phone • From standby select Menu > Settings > Bluetooth > Visibility > Show phone or Hid e phone .
31 To pair your phone with a Bluetooth handsfree 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > Bluetooth > Handsfree . 2 Select Yes if you are adding a Bluetoot h handsfree for th e first time or select Handsfree > My handsfree > New handsfre e if you are pairing with anot her Bluetooth handsfree.
32 Internet You need the correc t Internet settin gs in your phone. If settings are not in your phone, you can: • Get them in a t ext message from the network operat or. • On a computer, go to www.sonyericsson.com/support and request a text message with the settings.
33 Locks SIM card lock The SIM card lock protects yo ur subscription, but not yo ur phone itself, from un authorized use. If you change SIM cards, the phone still works with the new SIM card.
34 To turn the SIM card lock on 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > Adva nced > Security > SIM lock > Protection > On . 2 Enter your PIN and select OK . To edit your PIN 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > Adva nced > Security > SIM lock > Change PI N .
35 If the phone lock is set to Automa tic , you do not need to enter your phone lock code until a different SIM card is inserted in the phone. To turn the phone lock on 1 From standby select Menu > Settings > Adva nced > Security > Phone lock > Protection > On .

36 Troubleshooting Some proble ms require that you call yo ur service provide r, but you can co rrect most prob lems yourself. Rem ove the SIM card before handing your phone in for repa ir. Memory capacity and speed If you have not restarted the phone for a while, you may experienc e problems with i ts memory capa city and spee d.
37 The phone turns itself off If your phone turns itself off when being transported, something in your po cket or bag has act ivated the on/o ff ke y . You need to turn the automatic ke ylock on. • From standby select Menu > Settings > Adva nced > Auto keylock > On .
38 I cannot send text messages (SMS) Make sure you have a valid s ervice centre number in your phone. 1 From standby select Menu > Messaging > Se ttings > Text message > Service centre . The number is shown if it is saved on th e SIM card.
39 Insert SIM card Your SIM card is not inserted correctly or may be damaged or dirty. Try one or more of the fol lowing: • Remove the SIM card a nd insert it corre ctly. • Clean the connect ors on the SIM ca rd and phone with a soft brush, a cloth o r a cotton bud.
