15 Getting started Number of images and battery life that can be recorded / viewed The tables show the appr oximate number of images and the bat tery life that ca n be recorded/ viewed when you shoot images in normal mode with fully charged batteries (supplied) at a temperature of 25° C (77°F).
16 Using t he AC adaptor , Open t he DC IN j ack cover and connect the AC Adap tor AC-LS5 (not supplied) to the DC IN j ack of your cam er a. Conn ect th e DC p lu g wit h th e v mark facing the front of the cam e ra. • Be su re to use the AC-LS5 AC Adaptor.

22 Image size and quality You can ch oose imag e size (num be r of pixels) and ima ge qua li ty (comp ression ratio) ba sed on t he kind of image s you w ant to shoot. The image size is sho wn by the numb er of pixels (dot s) (ho r iz ontal × vertic al), which comp o se an im age.

24 Basic still image shootin g — Using auto adjustmen t mode Holding the cam era correctly When sh ooting pict ures wi th the camera, b e careful so t hat your fingers do not block the lens portion , finder window , flash e mitter, microph one or sel f-timer lamp /AF illumi nator ( page 8).
25 Shoot ing still ima g e s , Press an d hold the sh utter button h alfway down. The be ep sou nds but the ima ge is not yet recor ded. When the AE /AF loc k indic ator changes from fl ashi ng to steadily lit, the camera is re ady for sho o ting. (The LCD scre e n may be frozen for a spl it second de pe nding on the subj ect.
26 Checking the last image y ou shot — Quick Review , Press b ( 7 ) on the control but ton. To return to the norm a l shoo ting mode, press li ghtly on th e shutter button or pr ess b ( 7 ) again. To delete t he image displayed on the LCD screen 1 Pres s (Del ete).

28 Shooting close-ups — Macro The close- ups (Macro) recor ding mode is used when zoo ming up subjec ts suc h as flowers or in sec ts. Set ti ng t he z oom al l the way to the W side lets you shoot subjec ts at dista nces as clos e as 6 cm ( 2 3/8 inches).
29 Shoot ing still ima g e s • When shooting in clo se-ups (Macro) mode, use the LCD screen. I f you shoot using the finder , the range you can see through the finder may differ f rom the actual recording range.
30 Selecting a flash mode , Set the mode dial to , and press v ( ) on t he contro l button repeat edly to select a flash mode. Each time you press v ( ), the ind ica tor changes as follows. No indic ator (A uto ): The flash automati cally st robes when shooting images in a dark pla ce or ag ainst a light source .

32 Shooting images with the finder The find er i s conv enient whe n you want to save battery po wer, or when i t is difficult to conf irm th e ima g e usin g the LC D scr e en. Each time you pre ss , the displa y changes in t he fo llowing ord er. Histog ram on (Image informa tion can al so be displayed du ring playback.
33 Shoot ing still ima g e s Inserting the date and time on a still image , Set the mode dial to SET UP. The SE T UP scr een appe ars. • The date and time is not inse rted in Multi Burst mode. • When images are shot with the date and time superimposed, the date and time cannot be removed later .
34 Shooting according to scene conditions You can s hoot more effect ively by select ing the appr op riat e mod e and th en pres si ng th e shut ter bu tto n. Twilight mode Allows you t o shoot night scenes at far distance without losin g the dark at mosphere of t he sur roun dings .
35 Shoot ing still ima g e s Soft snap mode This mode lets you shoot skin col ors in bright er a nd w a rm er tones for more beauti ful pi cture s. In add ition, the sof t focus effec t creat es a ge ntle atmosph ere f or portrait s of p eople, flowers, etc.
36 Combination s for each mode dial setting When shoot ing with the mode dial set to , , , , or , the c ombination o f functions suc h as the flash mode is predetermi ned to make the opt imum settings to match the scene. 40 Viewing images on a TV screen If you w ant to view images o n a TV scre en, you need a TV with a v id eo i nput jack and the A/V co nnectin g ca ble (suppl ied).

49 Advanc ed stil l imag e shooting • When you use the digital zoom or AF illuminator, priority AF movement is giv en to subjects in or near the center of the frame. I n this case the or indicator flashes and the AF range finder frame is not displayed.
50 Shooting techniques When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of the frame. In a case like t his, use AF lock to focus on the subject, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

53 Advanc ed stil l imag e shooting Exposure In addition to the focus and o ther settings, it is als o im port ant to adju s t t he exp o sure in order to take beautiful pi ct ure s. Exposure i s the amoun t of l igh t th at the CCD of the digi ta l stil l camera is ab le to receiv e.
54 Adjust ing the exposure — EV ad just ment You can manuall y adju st th e exposure determin ed by t he camera . Use thi s mode when the p roper ex posure cannot b e obta ined , for e xampl e, w hen th e con trast (differe nc e betwee n light an d dar k) betwee n the subject a nd the backgr ound is extre mely la rg e.
55 Advanc ed stil l imag e shooting Displaying a histogram A histogram is a gra ph sho w in g the bri ghtn e ss of a n i ma ge. The hor iz on tal axi s shows the bri ght ne ss, and th e ve rtical axis shows the num be r of pi xels.
56 Shooti ng t echniques When shooting images, the camera automatically sets t he exposure. When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subj ect or a sno wy scene, the ca mera may judge that the subject is bright and set a darker exposure for the image.
