13 Getting started • Be sure to charge t he Nick el Metal Hydrid e batteries supplied with your camera before usi ng them. • W e recommend charging the batteries in an ambient temperature of betw een 10°C to 30°C (50°F to 86°F).
14 Charging the Nickel Metal Hydride batteries • If the p oles of the Ni ckel Metal Hydr ide batterie s are dirt y , the batterie s may not cha rge properly . Occasionally clean the poles of the batteries and the t erminals of the charger by wiping them with a dry cloth.
15 Getting started Charging time This represents the time r e quired to charge fully depleted Nickel Metal Hydride batteries using the supplied BC-CS1 charger in an environment where the ambient temperature is 25°C (77°F). • It takes about 13 hours to comp letely charge the batteries.
16 Inserting the batteries , Open the battery/“Memory Sti ck” cover. Slide the cove r in the direction of the arrow 1 whi l e pressing OPEN. The battery /“Memory Stick” cover opens in the direction the arrow 2 . , Insert the batteries. Match the +/– poles of the batteries to the +/– marks inside the battery case.
17 Getting started , Close the battery/“Memory Stick” cov er. Close the battery/“Memory S tick” cover while holding the batteries in. Make sure th e cover is c los ed s e cu rel y . To remove t he batteries Hold the camera with the battery/“M emory Stick” cover facing upward, open the cover, and remove the batteries.

19 Getting started Turning on/off your camera , Slide the lens co ve r in the di re ct ion of the arrow or p ress the POWER button. When you open th e lens cover or press the POWER button, the power is auto matically on. The POWER lamp (green) lights up.
20 Setting the date and time , Slide the l ens cover in the dire ction of the arrow or press the POWER button to turn on the power. The POWER lamp (green) lights up and the DATE NOTATION scre en appears on the LCD screen. • This operation is available no matter what position the m ode switch is i n.
21 Getting started , Set the numeric va lue with v / V on the control but to n, then press EXEC. The item to be set is indicated with v / V . After entering the number, v / V moves to the next item. Repeat this step until all of the items are set. • If you selected [D/M/Y] in step 2 , set t he time on a 24-hour cycle.
22 Shooting s till image s Inserting and removing a “Memory Stick” , Open the battery/“Memo ry Stick” cover. Slide the cove r in the direction of the arrow 1 while pressing OPEN. The battery /“Memory Stick” cover opens in the direction the arrow 2 .
23 Shooting s till images , Close the battery/“Memory Stick” cov er. T o remove a “Memory Stick” Open the battery/“Memory Stic k” cover, then push the “Memory Stick” to pop it out. • When the access lamp is lit up, it means that image data is being re ad or written.

Select [SIZE·BURST] wi th v / V on the control but to n, then press EXEC. , Select the desired ima ge size with v / V on the control butt on, then press EXEC. The image size is set. When the setting is complete , press MENU so that the menu disappears from the LCD scre en .
25 Shooting s till images Image size You can choose th e image size (number of pixels) according to the kind of im ages you want to shoot. Larger image sizes result in a larger data size, which means fewer images that you can record in a “Memory Stick.
26 Basic still image shooting (using auto adjustment mode) , Set the mode switch to STILL , an d slid e the lens cover to turn on the power. • Still images are recorded in JPEG for mat. • The exposure and focus are ad justed aut omatically at the factor y settin g.
27 Shooting s till images , Press and hold the shutter button halfway down . The beep sounds but the im age is not yet recorded. When the AE/AF lock indicat or changes from flashing to lighted up, the camer a is read y for shootin g. • If you release the shutter button, the recording will be canceled.
28 Auto Focus When you try to shoot a subject that is difficult to focus on, the AE/AF lock indic ator changes to flashing slowly. The Auto Focus function may have difficulty working under the followi ng conditions. In such cases, release the shutter bu tton, then recompose the shot and focus again.
29 Shooting s till images Using the self-timer , Set the mode swi tch to STILL, and press MENU. The menu appears on the LCD screen. • Y ou can also carry out this operation when the mo de switch is set to MOVIE.

34 Shooting according to scene conditio ns – Scene Selection When shooting night scenes , shooting portr aits, or shooting landscapes, u se th e modes listed below to improve the quality of your images. Soft snap mode The soft snap mode lets you shoot sk in colors in brighter and warmer tones for mo re beautiful pictures.
35 Shooting s till images , Set the mode switch to ST ILL, and press V (SCENE) on the cont rol button repeatedly to sele ct a desired mod e. Each time you press V (SCENE), the indicator c hanges as fo.
36 Setting the distance to the subject – Focus preset When shooting an image usin g a preset distance to the subject, or when shooting a subject through a net or window glass, it is difficult to achieve a proper focus using the auto focus func tion.

Select [FO CUS] with v / V on the cont rol button, then pr ess EXEC. , Select the desired focus s etting with v / V on the control button, then press EXEC. You can select from the following distance settings: AUTO (No indicator), 0.
38 Shooting five images continuously – Burst , Set the mode switch to ST ILL, and press MENU. The menu appears on the LCD screen. • Y ou can shoot up to five frames in succession by holding down the shutter button. If you release the shu tter button before all fi ve frames are shot , the camera stops shooting as soon as you release the button.

Press MENU so that the menu di sappears from the LCD screen. , Press the shutter button halfway down, then hold the shutter button fully down. Up to five images are rec orded as long as you hold down the shutter button.
40 Adding special effects – Picture Effect You can digitally process images to obtain specia l effects. , Set the mode swi tch to STILL, and press MENU. The menu appears on the LCD screen. • Y ou can also carry out this operation when the mo de switch is set to MOVIE.

42 Viewing s til l i m ag e s Viewing still images on the LCD screen You can view image s shot with your camera almost immediately on the LCD screen. You can select the following two methods for viewing images. Single (single-image) screen You can view one image at a time, displayed ove r the entir e screen .
43 Viewing s til l i m ag e s Viewing single images , Set the mode switch to PLAY, a nd press the POWER button to turn on the power. The last image you shot appears on the LCD screen. • If you close the lens cover while viewing images, the power is off.
44 Viewing an index screen (four-image) , Set the mode switch to PLAY, a nd press MENU. The menu appears on the LCD screen. , Select [ ] with v / V on the control button, then pres s EXEC.

46 Choosing images to print – Print mark You can mark a print mark on still images shot with your camera. This mark is convenient when you have images printed at a shop th at conforms with the DPOF (Digital Print Order Format) standard. • Y ou cannot mark movies.

48 Shooting movies , Set the mode switch to MOVIE, and op en the lens cover to turn on the power. • Movies are r ecorded in MPEG for mat. • Sound cannot be recorded in movies . , Press the shutter button fully do wn. “REC” appears on the LCD screen and the camera starts recording the imag e.
49 Enjoying movie s , T o stop reco rding, p ress the shutter button fully again. Indicators during shooting Indicators on the LCD screen are not recorded. You can use [LCD LIGHT] under [ ] with MENU and v / V on the control button to turn the LCD light on and off.
50 Viewing movies on the LCD screen , Set the mode swi tch to PLAY, and press the POWER butto n to turn on the power. The last image you shot appears on the LCD screen. Shooting time The shooting time is different, depending on the capacity of the “Memory Stick.
51 Enjoying movie s , Select the desired movies with v / V on the control button. v : To display the preceding image V : To display the next image , Press EXEC. The movie is played back. To stop playback Press EXEC. Indicators during viewin g movies Indicators on the LCD screen are not reco rded.

54 Formatting a “Memory Stick” , Insert the “Memory Stick” you want to format into the camera. Do not open the battery/“Me mory Stick” cover while formatting the “Memory Stick.

56 Copying images to your computer Follow the steps below to copy the images you have shot to your computer. Steps required by your OS (Operating System) • Some step may be unnecessary depending on your OS. • After the USB driver or applications are installed, step 1 is unnecessary .
57 Copying image s Recommended Macintosh env ironment OS: Mac OS 8.5.1, 8.6 , 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, or M ac OS X (v10.0/v10.1) The above OS must be insta lled at the factory. For the following models, update you r OS to Mac OS 9.0 or 9.1. – iMac with Mac OS 8.
58 1 Installing the USB driver and application Contents of the CD-ROM x USB driver This driver is needed in or der to connect the camera to a PC. x Image T ransfer (for Windo ws users only) This application is used to easily transfer images f rom the camera to a computer.
59 Copying image s • This section describes how to establish a USB co nnection using Windo ws Me as an example. The required operat ions may differ depending on your OS. • Close down all applications runnin g on the computer before installing the driver .
60 , Click [Next]. When the “Information” screen appears, click [Next]. The USB driver installation starts. When the installation is completed, the screen informs you of completion. , Click [Yes, I want to re start my computer now], then click [Finis h].
61 Copying image s , Click [Image Transfer] o n th e title screen. Select [English] then click [OK]. The “Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard” screen appears. • Y ou can use the “Image Tr ansfer” softwar e to copy images to your computer autom atically when you connect the camera to your computer with the supplied USB cable.

63 Copying image s , Confirm if the checkbox is checked on the “Image Transfer Settings” screen, then click [Next]. The “Image Transfer” driver installation starts. When the installation is completed, the screen informs y ou of completion. , Click [ Finish].
64 , Click [PIXELA ImageMixer] o n the title screen. The “Choose Setup Language” scr een appears. • Y ou can use the “PIXELA ImageMixer for Son y” software to copy , vie w and edit imag es. For details, see the so ftware’ s help files. , Select [English] then click [OK].
65 Copying image s , Follow instruc tions on each succeedi ng screen. When installation is comp lete, the “Rea d Me” text appears. Read the text, then close the window by clicking at the upper right corner of the screen. After that, click [Finish] in the install screen to close the install screen.
66 , Click [Install] at the “DirectX(R) Setup” screen, then when the “DirectX Se tup” screen appears, cl ick [OK]. DirectX installation starts . When installation is complete, your computer restarts. , Remove the CD-ROM. Then, you can establish the USB connection.
67 Copying image s 2 Preparing your camera , Insert the “Memory Stick” with th e images you want to copy into the camera. • For further details on the “Memory Stick”, see page 22. • When your camera is connected to a com puter , it draws power from the computer side.
68 3 Connecting your camera to your computer , Open the jack cover, and connect the supplied USB cable to your came ra. • Operations are not guaranteed when using a U SB hub. , Connect the other end o f the USB c abl e to your comp ute r . The camera is on.
69 Copying image s “USB MODE: NORMAL ” appears on the LCD screen. When a USB connection is established for the first time, your comput er auto matically runs the used program to recognize your camera. Wait for a while. • If “USB MODE: NORMAL” is not shown in step 3 , confirm that [USB] is set to [NORM AL] in [ ] (pag e 89).
70 4 Copying images If the checkbox is checked on the “Image Transfer Settings” screen in step 9 on page 63, “ Image Transfer” automatically launches during USB connection and the images are copied. When copying is complete, “ImageM ixer” automatically launches and a list of images appear s.
71 Copying image s c Drag and dr op the image files in to the “My Docum e nts ” folder . The image files are copied to the “My Documents” folder . • When you try to copy an image to a folder in which an image with the same file nam e is stored, the ove rwrite confirmation message app ears.
72 4 Copying images Copying images using “Image Transfer” Windows XP is set so that the OS Auto Playback Wizard activates. Follow the procedure below to cancel the setting. * This procedure does not need to be performed for subsequent image downl oads.
73 Copying image s Copying images using the Windo ws XP copy wizard a Click [Copy pictures to a f older on m y computer using Mi cros oft Scanner and Camera Wizard], then clic k [OK]. The “Scanner and Camera W izard” screen appears. • When performing the steps on page 68, the copy wizard appears on the deskto p of your computer.
74 Image file storage destinations and image file names Image files recorded with your camera are grouped as folders in the “Memory S tick” by recording mode . Example: For Windo ws Me users Notes The meanings of the file names in the following table are as follows: ssss stands for any number with in the range from 0001 to 9999.
75 Copying image s 5 Viewing the images on your computer , Double-click [My Documents] on the desktop. The “My Documents” folder contents are displayed. • This sect ion descr ibes the pr oc edure for copying im ages to the “My Documents” folder on p ages 70 and 72.
76 For Macintosh users Follow the steps below, according to your OS. 1 Installing the USB driver and ImageMixer * For Mac OS 8.5.1, 8.6, or 9.0 users only 1 Turn on your comp uter, and set the supplied CD- ROM into the CD-ROM drive. The “PI XELA Imag eMixer ” screen appears .
77 Copying image s 4 Copying images 1 Double-click the newly recognized icon on the desktop. The contents of the “Memory Stick” inser ted in your camera appear. 2 Double-click “DCIM.” 3 Double-click “100MSDCF.” 4 Drag and drop the image files to the hard disk icon.
78 Troubles hooting Troubleshooting If you experience trouble with your camera, try the following solutions. 1 First check the items on the tables below. If code displays “C: ss : ss ” appear on the LCD screen, the self-diagnostics display function is working (page 8 6).
Troubleshoot ing 79 Shooting images The battery life is short. • You are shoo ting/viewing im ages in an extremely cold location. • The batteries are not charged enough. • The batteries are dead (page 93). — p Charge the batteries (page 16 ). p Replace the batt eries with a new one.
80 Your camera cannot record images. • No “Mem ory Stick” is inserted. • The capacity of the “M emory Stick” is insufficien t. • The write-protect switch on the “Memory Stick” is set to the L OCK position. • You cannot sho ot while the flash is charging.
Troubleshoot ing 81 Viewing imag es Deleting images Symptom Cause Solution Your camera cannot play back images. • The mode swi tch is not set to PLAY. • Your camera m ay not play back image files copied from the hard disk of your computer if th e file name or file size has been changed or th e image has been modified.
82 Computers Symptom Cause Solution You do not know if the OS of your computer is compatible. — p Check “Recomme nded computer environment” (page 56). You cannot install the USB driver. — • You ar e attemptin g to install the US B driver on a machine that is not running a supported OS.
Troubleshoot ing 83 “Memory Stic k” You cannot turn on the camera during USB connection. • The camera and your computer are connected through a hu b. p Connect the camera directly to your comput er, or use a hub with out put of 500 mA. The image cannot be played back on a computer.
84 Other You have formatted a “Memory Stick” by mistake. • All the images on the “Mem ory Stick” are deleted by formatting and can not be restored. — Symptom Cause Solution Symptom Cause Solution Y our camera does not work. • The battery lev el is low.

86 Self-diagnostics display – If a code starting with an alphabet letter a ppears Your camera has a self-diagnostics display. This function displays the camera conditio n on the LCD screen with a combination of a le tter and four numerical digits. If this occurs, check the following code chart and attempt the corresponding corrective actions.
87 Additional infor m ati on Menu items Menu items that can be modified differ depending on the position of the mode swi tch. The LCD screen shows only the ite ms you can operate at the moment.

91 Additional infor m ati on On moisture condensation If the camera is br ought d ir ectly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense inside or outsid e the camera. Should this occur, the camera will not operate properly.
92 On “Memory Stick” “Memory Stick” is a new compact, portable and versatile IC recording medium with a data capacity that exceeds the capacity of a floppy disk. There are two types of “Memory Stick”: an ordinary “Memory Stick” and a “MagicGate Memory Stick” that are equipped with the MagicGate copyrig ht pr otection technology.
