15 Getting started Turn in g your camera on/off There are follow ing two w ays to turn on the camera. Press POW ER. The POWER lam p lights in green an d th e power i s on. When yo u turn on th e camer a for the fi rst tim e, the Cl ock Set screen appear s (p age 17) .

49 Advance d still image shoot ing Choosing an auto focus metho d You ca n set the A F ran ge fi nder fram e a nd the AF mode. AF range fin der frame The AF range finder frame sel ects the focus position a ccordin g to the subject position and siz e.
50 • When you are shooting movies and you choose Multipoint AF , the distance to the center of the LCD screen is estimate d as an average, so the AF works ev en with a certain amount of vibration.
51 Advance d still image shoot ing Shooti ng t echnique s When shooting with the subject at the edge of the frame, or when using Center AF , the camera may focus on the c enter instead of on the subject at the edge of the frame. In a case like t his, use AF lock to focus on the subjec t, and then recompos e the picture and s hoot.

54 Exposure In addition to the focus and other settings, it is also important to adjust the exposure in order t o take beautiful pictures. Exposure is the amount of light that the CCD of the digital still came ra is able to re c eive. This v alue changes according to the combination of aperture and shutter speed.
55 Advance d still image shoot ing Adjusting th e exposure – EV adju st ment You ca n manu a ll y shif t th e exposu re valu e determin ed by th e camer a. Use th is mode when y ou do not get the prope r exposu re, for instan ce, the subjec t and its back ground have hi gh c ont rast (light and dar k).
56 Displaying a histogram A histogram is a gra ph show ing the brigh t ne ss o f a n ima ge . Th e hor iz ont al axis shows the bri ght ne ss, an d the vertical axi s shows the numbe r of pixels. The gra ph display indi ca tes a dark imag e when skewed to th e le ft side , and a brig h t ima ge when skew ed to th e r ight side .
57 Advance d still image shoot ing Shooti ng t echnique s While shooting image s , the c ame ra automatically determines the exposure. When shooting a whitish overall image such as a backlit subject or a snowy scene, the camer a judges that t he subject is bright and may set a darker exposure for the image.

69 Still ima g e editi ng Protecting image s – Protect To pr eve n t ac cident al erasure of an impor ta nt im age, you can pr otec t it. • Note that formatting the “Memory Stick” erases all the data in the “Memory Stick” ev en if images are protected, and these images cannot be recovered.
