Technical Overview 36 SIP Components SIP is a peer -to-peer protocol. The peers in a session ar e called user agents (U As). SIP Clients SIP clients include the f ollowing: • T elephones — Ac t as UA S and U AC. The ad vance can initiate SIP r e- quests and respond to requests.
Technical Overview 37 Registration Registr ation is the process b y whic h centraliz ed SIP Server/R egistrars be- come aw are of the existence and r eadiness of an endpoint to mak e and receiv e calls. T he phone supports a number of configuration par ameters to allow this to happen.

Technical Overview 41 DNS The phone uses Æ DNS services pr ovided the phones oper ating sy stem to perf orm the fol lowing: • Resolv e the IP address of server s that hav e been configured as names (DNS A,AAAA records). • Resolv e the IP address of the domain part of user s called by URL (DNS A,AAAA recor ds).
Technical Overview 42 DNS SR V The phone supports the use of DNS SRV recor d lookups to allow SIP serv- ers to be located. This mec hanism is described in det ail in RFC 3263 - Lo- cating SIP Server s. If the location to whic h a SIP message is to be sent is defined as a name as opposed to an IP address a DNS SRV lookup will be performed.
Technical Overview 43 SN TP The phone support Æ SNTP. The SNTP serv er address can be supplied via DHCP or manually configured Æ page 21 9. If the SNTP serv er address is av ailable the server will be queried f or the time.
Technical Overview 44 IP Network Configur ation Routing The phone allo ws a default route to be configured to al low access to Serv- ers on a dif f erent subnet to the one in whic h the phone resides. In addition it is possible to con figure 2 additiona l r outes.
