4 ■ General ● Please ensure that the equipment is positioned in a well ventilated area and ensure that there is at least 4" (10cm) of free space along the sides and back. There must also be a minimum of 4" (10cm) of free space on the top of the unit.

11 SETTING THE CLOCK ● In this e xample, the cloc k is set f or the 24-hour (0:00) sys- tem. 1 Press the ON/ST AND-BY b utton to turn the po wer on. 2 Press the CLOCK button. 3 Within 5 seconds, press the MEMOR Y/ENTER button. 4 T urn the jog dial to select the time display mode .
12 SOUND CONTR OL ■ V olume (Main unit operation) When the VOLUME contr ol is turned clockwise, the vol- ume will increase. When it is turned countercloc kwise, the v olume will decrease . (Remote control operation) Press the V OLUME button to increase the volume and the V OLUME button to decrease the v olume .
13 COMP A CT DISC OPERA TION ■ CD pla yback 1 Press the ON/ST AND-BY button to turn the power on. 2 Press the CD ■ button. 3 Press the 7 7 7 7 7 button to open the disc tra y . 4 Place the CD on the disc tray , label side up. ● Be sure to place 3" (8 cm) CD in the middle of the disc tra y .
14 MINIDISC OPERA TION 1 Press the ON/ST AND-BY button to turn the power on. 2 Press the MD ■ button. 3 Load a MiniDisc in the direction indicated b y the ar- ro w on the MiniDisc, with the labeled side facing up. ● The disc name will be display ed only when the name has been programmed onto the disc.
15 CONVENIENT CD AND MINIDISC OPERA TIONS 1 Load a disc and begin pla yback. 2 Hold the MD/CD 2 2 2 2 2 button do wn for audible fast for - ward, and hold the MD/CD 3 3 3 3 3 button do wn for au- dible fast rever se . 3 Normal playbac k will resume when the button is re- leased.

17 ■ Repeat and random play 1 Select the desired program sour ce, CD or MiniDisc. 2 Press the P-MODE (play mode) b utton. ● Each time this button is pressed, the mode will change in the follo wing order : Repeat indicator Random indicator Disappears 3 Press the CD 06 06 06 06 06 or MD 06 06 06 06 06 b utton to start playback.
18 ■ Switching the time displa y Each time the TIME button is pressed during playback or when in the pause mode, the displa y will change. (Continued) ■ Changing the display during MiniDisc pla yback Each time the DISPLA Y button is pressed during playback or when in the pause mode, the displa y will change as descr ibed below .
19 ■ T uning 1 Press the ON/ST AND-BY b utton to turn the power on. 2 Press the TUNER (BAND) button. 3 Press the TUNER (BAND) button to select the desired frequency band (FM ST , FM or AM). FM ST FM AM 4 Press the TUNING ( X X X X X or W W W W W ) button to tune into the desired station.
20 (Continued) ■ Preset tuning Y ou can store up to 40 stations in memory (40 stations con- sisting of any combination of AM and FM stations y ou like) and recall them. T o enter stations into memory: 1 Perf orm steps 1 - 5 in the "T uning" section.
21 ■ Differences fr om tape recordings Y ou cannot record music on the re verse side of a Mini- Disc. MiniDiscs are single sided and should only be inser ted with the correct side up in the direction of the arrow on the top of the MiniDisc. Y ou don't need to search f or the star ting point at which to record.
22 (Continued) ■ Recor ding from a CD onto a MiniDisc (One-T ouch Editing) A CD can be recorded to a MiniDisc, starting from the first trac k, with one-touch operation. T o cancel the operation: Before pressing the CD 0 MD EDIT (HIGH or NORMAL) button, press the CD ■ b utton.
23 ■ T rack editing fr om a CD onto a MiniDisc Y ou can record se ver al consecutive tracks , star ting from the first track of a CD , to a MiniDisc. 6 Press the CD 0 0 0 0 0 MD EDIT (HIGH or NORMAL) button. 0 REC ● The CD loaded will be recorded in order , star ting from the first track.
24 ■ APMS recording fr om a CD onto a MiniDisc 1 Select tracks for APMS pla yback (page 16). 2 Load a recordable MiniDisc. 3 Press the CD 0 0 0 0 0 MD EDIT (HIGH or NORMAL) button. ● APMS playbac k will star t, and recording will star t auto- matically .
25 ■ Recording fr om the built-in radio onto a MiniDisc 1 T une in to the desired station (pages 19 - 20). 2 Load a recordable MiniDisc. 3 Press the ● REC button. ● The unit will enter the recording stand-by mode. 4 Check the recor dable time by pressing the DISPLA Y button.
26 ■ T o create a disc name 6 After entering all of the characters in the name, press the NAME/T OC EDIT button. ● The disc name will be recorded. T o erase a disc name: After perf orming steps 1 to 3. Press the TIMER/DELETE b utton f or 2 seconds or more .
27 1 During playbac k or in the pause mode , press the NAME/T OC EDIT button. 2 Within 10 seconds, press the MEMORY/ENTER b utton. TRACK ● The unit will enter the character input mode. ● The trac k you are listening to will be play ed repeatedly .
28 ■ T o change disc names and track names ● T o add a character: (Example: T o change "BET" to "BEST") 1 T o change disc names, perform steps 1 - 3 on pa ge 26. T o change track names, perform steps 1 - 2 on page 27. 2 Press the 3 3 3 3 3 or 2 2 2 2 2 button to flash the character at the place you want to ad d a letter.
29 ■ Divide ■ Combine 1 Play the trac k which you want to divide into tw o, and press the MD 06 06 06 06 06 b utton at the point where you want to divide the track. 2 Press the NAME/TOC EDIT b utton, and within 10 sec- onds, select "DIVIDE" using the jog dial.
30 ■ Move 1 While in the stop mode, select the trac k you want to move using the jog dial. Or start playing the track to be mo ved, and then press the MD 06 06 06 06 06 b utton. 2 Press the NAME/T OC EDIT b utton, and within 10 sec- onds, select "MOVE" using the jog dial.
31 ■ Erase T o erase all of the tracks at once: 1 Press the MD ■ button. ● The total number of tracks and the total pla ying time on a MiniDisc will appear . 2 Press the NAME/T OC EDIT b utton, and within 10 sec- onds, select "ALL ERASE" using the jog dial.
32 TIMER OPERA TION ■ Timer playbac k/Timer recording 6 T urn the jog dial to set the minute to star t, and then press the MEMOR Y/ENTER button. I If the ending time is not set manually , it will automatically be set for one hour after the starting time.

End time T o confirm the timer setting: Press the TIMER/DELETE button once. ● The turn-on time, the turn-off time will be displayed.
34 ■ Connecting external units ■ Headphones Notes: ● Before plugging in or unplugging the headphones , make sure the volume le vel is reduced. ● Be sure your headphones hav e a 1/8" (3.5 mm) diameter plug and are between 16 ohms and 50 ohms impedance.
35 ■ Listening to sound from an e xternal unit T o listen to sound from an e xter nal unit connected to the AUX input terminals: ■ Manual recor ding Y ou can start a recording manually while listening to play- back from other e xter nal equipment (tape deck, tuner) con- nected to the auxiliary input.
36 The disc is stored in a car tridge. Y ou can handle it easily with- out worrying about dust, finger pr ints, etc. Howe ver , dust en- tering the opening of the car tridge, dir t on the car tridge, warp- ing, etc. may cause malfunctions . Please note the following.
37 ■ If a prob lem occurs If this unit functions abnormally dur ing operation, first check the f ollowing items. If the unit continues to function abnormally , or if an abnormality appears other than listed below , set this unit to the stand-by mode and disconnect the AC po wer plug, then consult your SHARP dealer or service personnel.
38 (Continued) Symptom ● A recording cannot be made. ● Even though a disc has been loaded, "NO DISC" or "CAN'T READ" is dis- play ed.

40 ■ External care ● P eriodically wipe the cabinet with a soft cloth and a diluted soap solution, then wipe with a dir ty cloth. ● Do not use chemically treated cleaning cloths or other chemicals.
