Getting Started 1-1 GETTING ST AR TED Use this syste m for product freshn ess. The system co nsists of a Monarc h ® 9416 ® printe r and a keypad with the Fresh Marx™ ap plication.
1 - 2 Getting Started Connecting the Prin ter’s Power Supply To connect th e power supply t o the pr inter: Caution Do not touc h the elec trical connec tors while setting up t he printer. Electrosta tic discharge can damage or destroy th e printhead or electronic c omponents .
Getting Started 1-3 5. Plug the round en d of the power suppl y cable into the socket at the back o f the printer. 6. Plug the three- pronged en d of the AC adap ter cord into a grou nded electrical outlet. WARNING The printe r and power supp ly should never be operated in a location wh ere either on e can get wet.
1 - 4 Getting Started Reading the I ndicator Light The indicator ligh t monitors the prin ter's status. Indicator Light Description GREEN Printer is on and read y to use. FLASHING GREEN Printer is paused. Press th e FEED button to resume printing.
Getting Started 1-5 Loading Labels Note: If you run out of la bels while print ing, do not turn off the printe r when reloading the labels. You may lose yo ur data. The printer resume s printing wh en reloaded. 1. Remove and discard th e tape or wrapping from a new roll of labels .
1 - 6 Getting Started 4. Remove a supply holder guide fro m one end of the supply holder. The supply holder is norma lly attached with a line to the inside of the prin ter. 5. Slide a roll of labels ont o the suppl y holder. Note: If the core diamete r on your roll of labels is 1 inch in diame ter, remove the 1.
Getting Started 1-7 7. Insert the en ds of the supply holder into the slots in the su pply roll mount. Important Informati on Make sure the plastic line attaching th e supply ho lder to the pr inter is tucked down out of th e way of the supply holder and su pply holder guid es.
1 - 8 Getting Started 8. Adjust the s upply guides to their wi dest position by turning the d ial. 9. Feed the la bels, printin g side up, un der the supp ly guides and o ver the platen ro ller.
Getting Started 1-9 10. Press the labe ls under the supp ly guides. 11. Turn the dial to adjust the supply g uides so that they barely touch the ed ges of the label backin g paper. 12. Close the co ver until it locks in plac e. 13. Press the FEED button.
1 - 10 Getting Started Calibrating the Supply 1. Turn off the printe r. 2. Press and hold the FEED button while t urning on the printer. 3. Release the FEED button after the indicato r light starts flashin g ORANGE. The printer calibrates the die cut sensor, measures the label leng th, and prints the test labels .

Using The Keypad 2-3 Connecting the Communication Cable To connect th e serial cab le fro m the printer to the keypad: 1. Turn off the printe r and the keyp ad before connectin g the cable. 2. Connect the ser ial cable to the ( 9-pin) serial port on the back of the p rinter.
2-4 Using The Keypad 3. Connect the other end of the serial cabl e (9-pin) to the serial port on the ri ght-hand side of the keypad. About the Keypad Use the Fres hMarx applicatio n to date-labe l food items. The bu tton descriptions, color s, and layout ca n be changed for ea ch application.
Using The Keypad 2-5 Setting up the Fres hMarx System IMPORTANT - Complete the f ollowing steps before using the syste m. To set up t he system: 1. Press the Fresh Marx button three times. SELECT DATE OR TI ME 2. Press the numb er 3 button. SENDING PRINT ER SETUP COMMAND TO PRINTER , PLEASE WAIT.
2-6 Using The Keypad To set the Time : 1. Press the Fresh Marx button three times. SELECT DATE OR TI ME 2. Press the numb er 2 button. The display shows the curr ent time sett ing. If this is correct, pr ess the FreshMarx butt on to return to the Main Display.
Using The Keypad 2-7 Processing the Product Use the Fre shMarx applicatio n to label any product for freshness. All products are listed on the but tons on the keypad. The num eric button s on the keypad al low you to enter the qu antity of labels to be printed.
2-8 Using The Keypad Printi ng a Use First La bel Apply a “Us e First” label to any produ ct that needs to be used f irst. 1. Press the Use Firs t button on the keypad (bottom right) PRINTING A label prints with the words "Use First” and “Use Primer o".

3-2 Using the Update Utility Before You Be gin Install the Update Utilit y on a PC with Micros oft ® Windows ® 98 or great er. The PC should also hav e Microsoft ® Office ® 2000 (or gr eater installe d), which includes Acc ess databas e software .
Using the Update Utility 3-3 Editing the Overlay You can chan ge the way the overlay ap pears (a ke y’s color or text description). 1. From the Ma in screen, c lick Edit Overlay . The Overlay Edit screen appe ars. 2. To change a key ’s text , click the key to cha nge.
3-4 Using the Update Utility 4. Click Edit Label to change the label’s wordin g, offset ti me, and choos e to print the time on the label. The Edit Lab el Data screen appears . 5. Change any necessary text for the label or offset time. 6. Decide if yo u want to prin t the time on the label.

When you click Delete Key , you see 3. Click OK to remove ALL data fo r this key from the database and displ ay a black box in place of this key on the ov erlay.

Using the Update Utility 3-13 Communication Settings The Update Utility scans your comp uter for available communica tion ports and ad ds them to the Com Po rt list box. To display the c ommunication settings: 1. From the Ma in screen, c lick S etup , Com Port .
3-14 Using the Update Utility To update the keypad/termina l: 1. Connect the null mode m cable pro vided in the software kit fr om the compute r to the keypad. 2. On the main menu select All to up date the application and the data files. Select Data O nly to update just th e data sent to the ke ypad.
Care and Maintenance 4-1 CARE AND MAINTENANCE This chapter te lls you how to ♦ clear label jams ♦ clean the print head Clearing Labe l Jams When you are prin ting and a jam oc curs, the indi cator light turns RED. To clear the jam: 1. Turn off the printer.
4-2 Care and Maintenance Cleaning the Printhead Remember to clean the print head every time you load a new label roll int o the printer. Caution: You must turn off the prin ter’s power before cleaning the print head. To clean the printhead while printing, you may lose your data when you tur n off the printe r.
Troubleshooting 5-1 TROUBLESHOOTING Problem Action Indicator light is off when the printer is turned on. Check the power con nections from the power supply to the printer and wall outlet. See "Connecting the Prin ter’s Power Supply” in Chapter 1 for more informatio n.
5-2 Troubleshooting Problem Action Calibrate the supply. 1. Turn off the printer. 2. Load labels. See “Loading Labels” in Chapter 1 for more information. 3. Press and hold the FE ED button while turning on the printer . 4. Release t he FEED button after the indicator light starts flashing ORANGE.
Troubleshooting 5-3 Problem Action Label exits par tially out of the printer or skips a label. A label may be caught in the printer. See “Clearing Label Jams” in Chapter 4 for more informatio n. Make sure the labels are loaded correctly and tha t they are the Paxar /Monarch labels recommended for this application.
5-4 Troubleshooting Problem Action Test label does not print. Make sure the sup ply is loaded correctly. Make sure th e die cut sens or is in the correct position (was not accidentally moved while loading supplies). See “Checking the Die Cut Sensor ,” in Chapter 1 for more informatio n.
