6 Setting Up Y our Phone Install the batter y , then charge it, to begin using your phone. Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y . A W all/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) is inc luded with the phone, for charging the battery .
Getting Started 7 Remo vi ng the Batter y 1. T urn the phone off. Removing the batte ry when the device is on may cause loss of stored numbers or messa ges. 2. Remove the battery cover by pulling up on the slot provided. 3. Lift the batter y out of the device using the slot provided.

Getting Started 9 V oicemail All unanswered call s to your phone are sent to voicemail, even if your phone is turned off, so you’ll want to set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as you activa te your phone. For mo re information, see “V oicemail” on page 49.
10 Securing Y our Phone Use your phone’ s screen lock features to secure your phone. T o set a persona l screen lock, and for other settings related to securi ng your phone, refer to Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Lock screen . Locking the phone By default, the phone locks au tomatically when the screen times out.

18 Customizing the Home Screen Customize the Home screen to your preferences: • Add Widgets, Shortcuts, or Folders : Add and remove items from the H ome screen. T ou ch and hold on the Home screen, then cho ose an option. • Edit a Home page : Add and remove Home screen panels.
Understanding Y our Phone 19 Naviga tion Navigate your phone’ s features using the command keys and the touch screen. Warning! Please note that a touch screen responds best to a light to uch from the pad of your finger or a non-metallic stylus.
20 Pinch Using two fingers, make a pi nch motion on the screen. For example: • Pinch in to zoom in on pictures or screens. • Pinch out to zoom out on pictures or scree ns. Notifications Notifica tions shows details abou t connections, alerts and other items.
Understanding Y our Phone 21 LED Indicator The LED indicator , on the front of the pho ne above the screen (see “Front View” on page 15), animates or glows to show alerts or phone status. • Blue: – Pulses in mult i-color blue wh ile the phone is turning On or Off.
22 3G conn ection : Phone is active on a 3G system. The arro ws are colored when data is being transferred. Signal Strength : Current signal strength. The greater the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Wi-Fi Active : Wi-Fi is active, and connected to a Wi-Fi network.

24 W idgets Widgets are self-contained applicat ions that you can place on the Home screen for quick access. Adding widgets to the Home screen 1. Navigate to a Home screen panel, then touch and hold on the screen to display the Add to home menu.

26 Applications Applica tions holds all a pplications instal led on your phone. Applications that you download and install are also added to A pplications. The Applicatio ns screen is like the Home screen, it consists of panels that extend beyond the display width to provide more space.
Understanding Y our Phone 27 Using Google V oice T yping Use your voice to enter text using the Google Voice typing fea ture. 1. While entering text, touch . 2. At the Speak now prompt, speak your text. As you speak, the text is displayed in the text field.
28 Section 4: Contacts and Accounts Accounts Y our phone pro vides the ability to synchronize information, from a variety of accounts, including Facebook, LinkedIn, T witter , Email, Google, and Microsoft Exchange. Depending on the account, you can choose to synchronize you r calendar , contacts, and other types of content.

30 Creating Contacts from Logs Save a phone number from a recent call to create a new contact, o r update an existi ng contact. For more information, s ee “Adding or Updating Contacts Using Logs” on pa ge 40. Saving a number from t he Phone Keypad Enter a phone number wi th the Phone Keypad, then save it.

32 J oining Contacts Y our phone can synchr onize with multiple accounts, inclu ding Google , Corporate, and other providers, plus social networking sites like Faceb ook. When you synchroniz e contacts from these accounts with your phone, you m ay have multiple contacts for one person.
Contacts and Accoun ts 33 Sharing Namecards (vCards) Y ou can send a contact namecard as a vCards via Bluetooth to other Bl ue tooth devices, or as an attachment via Gmail or Email. Important! Not all Bluetooth devices will accept contacts, and not all devices support transfers of multip le contacts.
34 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster , or to quickly call or send messages to group memb ers. Y our phone comes with pre-loaded groups you can use to add your contacts, or you can create new groups. Accessing Groups From the Home screen, touch Contacts ➔ Groups .
Contacts and Accoun ts 35 Adding Contacts t o a Group 1. From the Home screen, touch Contacts ➔ Groups . 2. To u c h a Group to display it, then touch Add member . 3. T ouch contact(s) to mark them for addition, or touch Select all to mark all contacts.
36 Speed Dials Speed dials are numbers you assign to contacts, to allow you to quickly cal l the contact. For more information a b out calling using speed dials, see “Making Calls using Speed Dials” on page 37. Note: Speed dial 1 is reserv ed for Voicemail by default, and cannot be reassigned.
Calling 37 Section 5: Ca lling Making Calls Y our phone offers multiple ways to m ake calls: • Use the touch screen Phone Keypad to enter the phone number or spe ed dial. • Call a contact from Contacts . • Call a contact from Fav or i te s . • Return a call, or call a recent caller , from Logs .
38 Making Calls using F a vorites Favorites are contact s that you designate as favorite s by starring th em. For more informat ion about creating favor ites, see “Favorites” on page 33. 1. From the Home screen, touch Phone . 2. T ouch Favo rit es to display favorites.
Calling 39 Answ ering Call-Waiting Calls When you receive a call while o n a call: • T ouch an d drag the Answer icon to answer the incoming call. The original call is pl aced on hold, and remains on hold unti l you end the second call, or swap call s back to the original cal l.

Messaging 43 Section 6: Messaging Types of Me ssa ges Y our phone supports these types of mess ages: • Te x t m e s s a g e s : Send and receive simple messages contai ning text to other m obile phones or email addresses (also known as SMS).
44 – Add slide/Remove slide : Add o r remove a slide. Slides hold pictures or other media, and adding a slide converts the message to MMS. – Add subject : Add a subject field (conve rts the message to MMS.) – Discard : Discards the current message.
Messaging 45 • Background style : Choose the appea rance of the screen behind me ssage threads. T ouch a style, then touch Save . • Use the volume key : When enabled , you can change the size of m essage text while vie wing by pressing the V olume Key .
46 Emergency message settings • Emergency alerts : This device is des igned to receive Wireless Em ergency Alerts from the Commercial Mobile Alert Service (CMAS), including Presidential Alerts, Im minent Alerts (Severe or Extrem e), AMBER Alerts (missing persons), and Emergen cy Alert T est Messages.
Messaging 47 1. From the Home screen, touch Messaging . 2. To u c h Menu , then touch Settings ➔ Emergency Alerts . 3. All alerts are enabled by default (checkmark showing). T o disable alerts, touch an alert to remove the checkmark. Y ou can also choose to receive Emergency Alert T est Mes sages, used when testing the system.
48 Email Se tting s Use settings to configure handling of you r email. Note: Available settings depend on the email provider . 1. From the Home screen, select Apps ➔ Email . 2. T ouch Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Genera l preferences for options: • Auto-advance : Choose the screen to display after you delete a m essage.
Messaging 49 Sending Gmail 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gmail . 2. To u c h Compose , then touch fields to enter recipients and a message. T ouch Menu for options. 3. To u c h Send to send the message. Syncing Y our Gmail Account Syncing refreshes your phone with the account’s servers.

52 Customizing the Apps Screens Choosing a view By default, app icons a ppear in Grid view . Y ou can change the view to list view. 1. From the Home screen, touch Applications .

54 • Registered devices : defaults to your ph one.This indicates the source of the stre aming images and vide os. Use the main scre en to add more externa l devices . • Setting up web ser vices : Sign in to external sites such as Facebo ok, T witter , and m ore to set up external W eb services.
Applications 55 Sending Ev ents Send events as vCalendar files to other Bluetooth devices, as message attachments, or via Wi-Fi Direct. 1. From the Home screen, touch Applications ➔ Calendar .
56 Picture Options 1. From the Home screen, touch Applications ➔ Camera . 2. Use these options to configure the camera: • Self portrait : Switch between the ba ck camera and the front ca mera, for self-portraits. • F l a s h : Choose Off, On, or Auto flash.
Applications 57 – Auto co ntrast : T urn On to have the Came ra automaticall y adjust settings for conditi ons. – Guidelines : Enable or disable an on-screen grid to aid in photo composition. – Anti-shake : T u rn On to minimize ef fects of camera movement.
58 4. As you compose a shot, you can: • “Pinch” the screen, or press the V olume Key , to zoom in or ou t. • T ouch to c onfigur e video o ptions . 5. T ouch Record to start record ing. 6. T ouch Stop to stop recording. Video Options Configure the camcorder .
Applications 59 Clock The Clock application inc ludes t hese featur es: • Alarm : Create alarms to go off once, or to repeat. • Wor l d cl o c k : Display the time and date in any time zone. • Stopwatch : Record lap times. • Tim er : Measure elapsed time.

Applications 75 V oice Search Search the Web by speaking your se arch criteria. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Voi ce Se a rc h . V oice T alk Samsung’ s voice command applica tion allows you to speak commands directly to the phon e unless you are using a high-quality Bluetooth headset.
76 Configuring WiFi Hotspot 1. From the WiFi Hotspot screen, touch Menu , then select Configure (WiFi Hotspot) for these option s: • Network SSID : View and change the name of your Wi-Fi hotspot. •H i d e m y d e v i c e : When enabled, your m obile hotspot is not visible to other Wi-Fi d evices during a scan.

78 Section 8: Connec tions Wi - F i Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technolog y that provides access to local area network s. Wi-Fi communication requires access to an existing Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi networks c an be Open (unsecured), or Secu red (requiring you to provide login crede ntials).

80 Bluetooth Note: For Hearing Aid Compatibility Informa tion, see page 115. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless communications techno logy for exchanging information over a distance of about 30 feet. Y ou don’t need to line up the devices to send information w ith Bluetooth.

From the list of scanned devices, touch the target device, then follow the prompts to complete the p airing: • If the target device re quires a PIN, enter a PIN for the target device and touch OK .

Connections 83 Kies via Wi-Fi Manage content saved on your device vi a your desktop or mobile br owser using Wi-Fi technology . The Kies via Wi-Fi set ting connects your phone via Wi-Fi to the Kies application, which you can install on your computer .
84 T ur ning W iFi Hotspot On or Off Activate your phone’ s Mobile Hotspot application to allow other devices to use your phone’ s internet connection. 1. From the Home screen, touch Applications ➔ WiFi Hotspot . 2. T ouch WiFi Hotspot to turn Wi-Fi Hotspot On or Off.

86 Wi-Fi Direct Wi-Fi Direct allows devi ces to connect to each other directly via Wi-Fi, without a Wi-Fi network or hotspot, and without havi ng to set up the connection. For example, your phone can use Wi-Fi Direct to share ph otos, contacts and other content with other Wi-F i Direct devices.
Settings 87 Bluetooth Use Bluetooth to transfer information be tween your device and other Bluetooth devices. T ur ning Bluetooth On or Off 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings . 2. To u c h Bluetooth to turn Blu etooth On or Off. Tip: Y ou can also turn Bluetooth On or Off at Notifications.
88 2. T ouch Limit mobile data usage to enable the limit. 3. T ouch Alert me ab out data usage to receive an alert when you reach configured da tes or limits. 4. T ouch the Data usag e cycle drop-down and select a date. 5. Configure the limit by touching and dragging the limit line on the g raph.

To u c h Haptic feedback to turn touch vibrations On or Off. In this mode the device vibrate s automatically when a pplications download.
94 Wallpaper Customize the background of the Home and Lock screens. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Display ➔ Wallpa per . 2. Select a screen, from Home screen , Lock screen , or Home and lock screens .
Settings 95 Screen mode Screen mode sets the display to the conventional layout of Basic mode or provides an easier user experience for the first-time smartphone users using Easy m ode. 1. From the Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Settings ➔ Display . 2.
