Getting star ted 11 Installing the SIM or USIM card Inser t the SIM or USIM card provided b y the mobile telephone ser vice provider . • Only microSIM car ds work with the device . • Some L TE ser vices may not be available depending on the service provider .
Getting star ted 12 Removing the SIM or USIM car d 1 Open the cov er of the SIM card slot. 2 Push the SIM or USIM car d until it disengages from the device , and then pull it out. 3 Close the cov er of the SIM card slot. Char ging the ba tter y Use the charger t o charge the battery before using it f or the first time.
Getting star ted 13 Charg ing with the charger Connect the USB cable to the USB pow er adaptor and then plug the end of the USB cable into the multipurpose jack . Connecting the charger improperly ma y cause serious damage to the device . Any damage caused by misuse is not co ver ed by the warranty .
Getting star ted 14 After fully charging , disconnect the device from the charger . F irst unplug the charger from the device , and then unplug it from the electric socket.
Getting star ted 15 Inser ting a memor y card Y our device accepts memor y cards with maximum capacities of 64 GB . D epending on the memor y card manufacturer and type, some memory cards may not be compatible with y our device . • Some memor y cards may not be fully compa tible with the device .
Getting star ted 16 Removing the memor y card Befor e removing the memory card, first unmount it f or safe remo val. On the Home scr een, tap → Settings → General → Stor age → Unmount SD card . 1 Open the cov er of the memor y card slot. 2 Push the memory card until it disengages from the devic e, and then pull it out.
Getting star ted 17 Replacing the S P en nib While using the S P en, the S Pen nib ma y get dull. If the nib is dull, replace it with a new one . 1 Hold the nib with the tweezers firmly , and then pull it out. 2 Inser t a new nib into the S P en until you hear a click.
Getting star ted 18 T urning the devic e on and off When turning on the device f or the first time, f ollow the on-screen instructions to set up your device .
Getting star ted 19 L ock ing and unlock ing the devic e When not in use, lock the devic e to prevent un wanted operation. P ressing the P ower button turns off the screen and puts the device int o lock mode. The device automa tically gets locked if it is not used for a specified period .

Basics 23 Dragging T o mov e an icon, thumbnail, or preview t o a new location, tap and hold it and drag it to the target position. Double -tapping Double -tap on a webpage or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 24 F licking Flick left or right on the Home screen or the A pplications screen t o see another panel. F lick up or down to scr oll through a webpage or a list, such as contacts. Pinching Spread two fingers apart on a webpage, map , or image to zoom in a part.
Basics 25 C ontrol motions Simple motions allow easy contr ol of the device. Befor e using motions, make sur e the motion featur e is ac tivated . On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Motions , and then drag the Motions switch to the right.
Basics 26 Picking up When you pick up the devic e after it has been idle for some time or when the scr een has turned off , it vibrates if you ha ve missed calls or new messages. P anning to bro wse When an image is zoomed in, tap and hold a point on the scr een, and then move the device in any dir ec tion to bro wse the image.
Basics 27 T ilting T ap and hold two points on the scr een, and then tilt the device back and forth to zoom in or out. P alm motions Use palm motions to c ontrol the device b y touching the screen. Befor e using motions, make sur e the palm motion featur e is ac tivated .
Basics 28 C overing Co ver the screen with a palm t o pause media playback . Samsung Smar t P ause Use this f eature t o pause videos when you look aw ay from the scr een. On the Home screen, tap → Settings → Con trols → Smar t screen , and then tick Smar t pause .
Basics 29 U sing Multi W indow Use this f eature t o run multiple applications on the screen at the same time . • Only applications on the Multi Windo w tray can run. • This f eature ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice provider .
Basics 30 Launching applications in a split scr een Multi W indow 1 Drag your finger fr om the r ight edge of the scr een towar ds the middle of the screen. Alternativ ely , tap and hold . The Multi Windo w tray appears at the right side of the screen.
Basics 31 3 T ap and hold another application icon on the Multi Window tra y , and then drag it to a new location. Y ou can launch the same application in a split screen at the same time. Only applications with next to its icon suppor t this fea ture .

Basics 34 U sing the S P en The included S P en can be used to easily select items or per form func tions. A c tions using the S P en with the button pressed pro vide additional conv eniences, such as screen captur e. Pull out the S P en from the slot to use it .
Basics 35 Air c ommand Pr ess the S Pen butt on while hovering the S P en over the scr een to display air command. With this f eature, y ou can directly use the following actions: • Action Memo : T ur n your handwriting int o an ac tionable link to one of a range of useful featur es.
Basics 36 Capturing scr eenshots T ap Screen W rite on the air command. A lternatively , with the S Pen butt on pressed, tap and hold the screen until y ou hear a click . I t is possible to dra w , wr ite on, or cr op a screenshot. The screenshot is sa ved in the Galler y → Screenshots folder .
Basics 37 Selec ting and capturing an image With the S P en button pr essed, dra w a line around an ar ea to select it. If necessar y , use one of the following options: • : Restore the original selection. • : Con ver t the selec tion to a cir cular shape.
Basics 38 Notifications Notification icons appear on the status bar a t the top of the screen t o report missed calls, new messages, calendar ev ents, devic e status, and mor e. Drag down fr om the status bar to open the notifications panel. Scr oll the list to see additional aler ts.

Basics 46 Disabling applications T ap → Uninstall/disable apps , and then select an application to disable it. T o enable the application, on the Applica tions screen, tap Settings → General → Application manager , scroll to DISABLED , select the application, and then tap Enable .

Basics 52 Setting up user profiles Set up user profiles and then select one when unlock ing the device to use personalised settings. By setting up multiple user profiles , several users can share the devic e without affecting others’ personal settings , such as email accounts, wallpaper pr eferences , and more.
Basics 53 C onnec ting with S amsung Kies Samsung Kies is a computer application that manages media cont ents and personal information with Samsung devices . Download the latest Samsung Kies from the Samsung website . 1 Connect the device to the comput er using the USB cable.
Basics 54 Securing the device Pr event others from using or acc essing personal data and information stored in the devic e by using the security features . The device requir es an unlock code whenever unlocking it. Setting a signatur e On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → Signatur e .
Basics 55 Setting a PIN On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Device → Lock scr een → Screen lock → PIN . Enter at least f our numbers, and then enter the passw ord again to v er ify it. 57 C ommunication Phone Use this application to make or answ er a call. T ap Phone on the Applications screen. Mak ing calls Mak ing a call Use one of the f ollowing methods: • Phone : Enter the number using the keypad , and then tap . • Groups : Make a call from the list of contact groups .
Communication 58 Mak ing an interna tional call T ap and hold 0 until the + sig n appears. Enter the country code, ar ea code, and phone number , and then tap . During a call The f ollowing actions are available: • : Switch t o a Bluetooth headset if it is connected to the device .
Communication 59 Adding c ontac ts T o add a phone number to the c ontac ts list from the keypad , enter the number and tap Add to con tacts . V iewing call logs T ap Phone to view the history of incoming and outgoing calls. T o filter a call log , tap → Vi ew , and then select an option.
Communication 60 Rejec ting a call When a call comes in, drag outside the large cir cle. T o send a message when r ejecting an incoming call, drag the reject message bar upwar ds. T o cr eate the r ejection message, tap → Call settings → Call settings → Set up call reject messages .

Communication 63 Editing a con tac t Selec t a contact to edit, and then tap . Deleting a contact T ap . Setting a speed dial number T ap → Settings → Speed dial setting , select a speed dial number , and then select a contact for it. T o remo ve a speed dial number , tap and hold it, and then tap Remov e .
Communication 64 Displaying c ontac ts T ap Con tacts . By default, the device show s all saved c ontacts. T ap → Settings → Con tacts to display , and then select a location where contacts are save d. Moving con tac ts T ap Con tacts . Moving con tac ts to Google T ap → Merge acc ounts → Merge with Google .
Communication 65 Sharing con tac ts T ap → Share namecar d via → Multiple contacts , select contacts, tap Done , and then select a sharing method. F av ourite con tac ts T ap F av ourites . Communication 66 Managing groups Selec t a gr oup , tap , and then take one of the f ollowing actions: • Search : Search for c ontac ts. • Delete gr oups : Selec t user-added gr oups, and then tap Done . Default groups cannot be deleted. • Edit : Change the group settings .
Communication 67 Messages Use this application to send t ex t messages (SMS) or multimedia messages (MMS). T ap Messages on the Applications screen. Y ou may incur additional charges for sending or r eceiving messages while you are outside your home service area.
Communication 68 Sending scheduled messages While composing a message , tap → Scheduling . Set a time and date, and then tap OK . The device will send the message at the specified time and dat e. • If the device is turned off at the scheduled time, is not connected to the network, or the network is unstable, the message will not be sent.
Communication 69 Sending messages T ap the email accoun t to use, and then tap at the top of the screen. Enter r ecipients, subject, and message, and then tap . T ap to add a recipient fr om the contacts list. T ap +Me to add yourself as a r ecipient.
Communication 70 Reading messages Selec t an email accoun t to use , and new messages are retriev ed. T o manually retriev e new messages, tap . T ap a message to r ead. Open attachments. Change the screen lay out. Reply to the message. F or ward the message.
Communication 71 Sending messages In any mailbox, tap , enter r ecipients, a subject, and a message, and then tap SEND . T ap → Save dr af t to sav e the message for later deliv er y . T ap → Attach file to attach images , videos, music , and others.
Communication 72 Labels Google Mail does not use ac tual folders , but uses labels instead. When Google Mail is launched, it displa ys messages labelled Inbox. Selec t a label in ALL LABELS to view messages in other labels. T o add a label to a message , selec t the message, tap → Change labels , and then select the label to assign.
Communication 73 Photos Use this application to view and shar e images or videos via G oogle ’ s social network ser vices. T ap Photos on the Applications screen. This application ma y not be available depending on the r egion or ser vice pr ovider .
74 W eb & netw ork Internet Use this application to br owse the Internet. T ap Internet on the Applications screen. V iewing webpages T ap the address field , enter the web address , and then tap Go . T ap to share , save, or print the curr ent webpage while viewing a webpage .
W eb & network 75 Histor y T ap → Histor y to open a webpage fr om the list of recently-visit ed webpages. T o clear the histor y , tap . Sav ed pages T o view sa ved webpages , tap → Saved pages . Links T ap and hold a link on the webpage t o open it in a new page, sa ve , or copy .
W eb & network 76 Book marks T o bookmark the current webpage , tap → S ave . T o open a bookmarked webpage, tap → Book marks , and then select one. Searching the w eb by voic e T ap , speak a keyword, and then select one of the suggested keywords tha t appear .
W eb & network 77 P airing with other Bluetooth devices On the Applications screen, tap Settings → Connections → Bluetooth → Scan , and detected devices are list ed. Select the device you want t o pair with, and then accept the aut o - generated passkey on both devic es to confirm.

105 Media Music Use this application to list en to music. T ap Music on the Applications screen. • Some file formats are not supported depending on the soft ware installed on the device . • Some files may not play pr operly depending on the encoding method used.
Media 106 T o listen t o songs at equal volume levels , tap → Settings → Play er → Smar t V olume . When Smar t V olume is activated, the v olume may end up louder than the device volume lev el. Use caution t o av oid long-term exposure t o loud sounds to prev ent damage to your hearing .
