Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phon e by first configuring your hard ware, activa ting your ser vice, and then setting up your voice mail. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to use it is necessar y to install both the ba tter y and SIM into their corresponding internal co mpartments.
6 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot. Installing the M emor y Card Y our phone also supports the use of a memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video files.
Getting Started 7 3. Replace the ba tter y cov er onto the back of the pho ne (3). 4. While applying pressure, slide the top p ortion to wards the camera area (4) until yo u hear a light click. Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone.
8 2. Plug the f lat end of the T ravel Adapter in to the Power/ Accessor y Interf ace connector and t he other end int o a standard AC wall out let. 3. When charging is finished, first u nplug the adapter’ s power plug from the AC wall outlet and then remove t he flat end from the interface connec tor jack on th e phone.

16 Using the Multitasking Menu This key ( ) launches the Mu ltit ask menu that can be activa ted from wi thin any a ctive windo w or page on the phone. There is no need to st op w ha t you are doing , if you quickly want to jump out and activa te another common feature.
Understanding Y our Phon e 17 Multitask Func ti ons Pressing the Multitaski ng key ( ) on the left side of t he handset, allows you to choose from one of the follo wing functions: • Call : allows you to make a voice call while us ing the handset for other tasks.
18 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vig a tion for your phone. The a877 has done away with the n eed for navigation whee ls or keypads. The a877 is completely na vigable by either an onscreen touch or scroll. • T ou ching a n onscreen op tion act ivate s the fea ture.

22 W idgets The Widget ba r provides quic k access to mini-programs (widgets). This b ar (located at the left of th e Idle screen) gives you information a t a glance and pro vides easy acce ss to freq.

24 Calendar : allow s you to access the Calendar feature. With the Calendar feature, you can: • Consult the calendar by month, week, or day . • Set schedules and no te anniversarie s. • Write memos to keep track of your schedule. • Set an alarm to act as a rem inder , if necessar y .
Menu Navigation 25 W idget Bar Naviga tion Y ou can drag the widgets to th e display screen to use th e application or feature, then drag it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. Note: Many widgets can be used directly from the widget bar without dragging them onto the screen (ex: Bluetooth and Alarms).
26 R ear ranging Widg ets Y ou can also customize the Widget bar by arranging the location of your current widgets. This ca n help you place your frequently used (favorite) widgets at the top of the l ist.

28 Section 4: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answ er a call. It also includes the fea tures and function ality associated with making or answering a ca ll. Cor rect ing an Enter ed Number Use the following steps to co rrect a mis-typed entry when dialing. 1. After entering a numbe r usin g the keypad . • If you make a m istake, touch to erase a si ngle characte r .
30 Making a Call from the Addr ess Book Y ou can store phone numbers tha t you use regularly on the SIM card or in the pho ne’ s memory . These entrie s are collec tively called the Address Book . Fo r further details about the Address B ook feature, see “Finding an Address Book Entry” on page 86.
Call Functions 31 Dialing Options Fr om the Idle screen and Main menu, you ha ve the o ption to access the D ialer and initiate a call. When you m anually enter numbers from the Di aler , you will see three dial ing options displayed on the screen. • Call : dials the current number en t ered using the onscreen ke ypad.
32 7. During a V ideo Share sessio n, your options are displ ayed as icons on the screen. T ouc h the corresp onding icon to activate the feature. Tip : T o stop the video share call press the Stop key . 8. A pop-up message displays “ Video Sharing has been Stopped.
Call Functions 33 Viewing All Calls 1. Fr om the Recent Calls menu, touch the drop-down and select the All option. Al l calls made, received, an d missed are listed.
34 Viewing the Details of a Missed Calls T o view the deta ils of a selected m issed call, use the f ollowing steps: 1. T ouch the Missed Calls dialog. A list of the most re cently missed calls is displayed. 2. T ouch the desired missed call. In formation for tha t caller is then displayed within a Mi ssed C a lls page.

Call Functions 37 In-Call Op ti ons During an acti ve call there are se veral function s a vailable by touching a correspon di ng onscreen button. • Spkr On/Off routes the phone’ s audio through either the speaker or through the earpiece. – Slide Spea ker to On to route the audio through the speaker .
38 Switching B etween Call s When you have an a ctive call and a ca ll on hold, you may swi tch betwee n the two calls, changing the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold.
Call Functions 39 Impo rtant!: For more information, see “Responsible Listening” on page 176. Switchi ng o f f t he Mic rop hone (Mut e) Y ou ca n temporarily switch yo ur pho ne’ s microphone off, so that the other person cannot hear you.
40 Note: The Join option combines all of the calls you have established with your phone (both active and on hold). Swap places the current call on hold and then activates the previous call. This feature joins all of the calls you have es tablished with your phone (both ac tive and on hold) in to a multi-party call.
Entering T ext 41 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using th e phone keypad or the nested, QWER TY keyboard-style keyp ad. Th is section also describes how to use the T9 p redictive text en tr y system to reduce the numb er of key stroke s need ed to enter text.
42 T e xt Input Options Y our phone has the foll owing text input modes: • T9 ( ): this mode allows you to enter words with only one keystroke per letter . Each key on the keypad has more than one l etter; for example, touching can enter J , K, or L.
Entering T ext 43 • Emoticons ( ) 2. T ouch the text mode you desire . The text mode changes to the mo de you touche d. Using T9 Mode T9 is a predictive text input mode t hat all ows you t o key in any character using single ke ystr okes. This text inp ut mode is based on a built-in dictionary .
44 • T o enter periods, hyphens, and other special characters, touch the T ext Input button (bottom center), sel ect Symbols ( ) and then touch the corresponding key . If the symbol does not display o n the initial screen, touch the left or right a rro w key to display the next set of symbols .
Entering T ext 45 Using Numeric The Numeric mode enables you to enter numbers into a text message. 䊳 T o uch t he T ext Input M ode button at the bot tom of the scree n and select Numeric ( ), then touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter .
46 3. Use your finger tip to wri te out each ch aracter . T ouch the Shift key to use uppercase letters. T ouch the Space key to create a spa ce between l ett ers, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to prevent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.
Entering T ext 47 The avai lable T ext Input modes are: abc , Abc , ABC , Numeric , and Sym bols . Each option causes the Ha ndwriting mode to behave differently . Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode bu tton at the bottom of the screen and select Abc .

The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 1@ , Emo , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.

Changing Y our Settings 65 Lock Phone When the Phon e Lock phone feature is enabled, the phone is locked and you must enter the 4 to 8 digit phone p ass word each time the phone is s witched on. Note: Y ou will be prompted to create a password the first time this feature is enabled.

Changing Y our Settings 69 – Unreachable activates an automati c forwar d of all incoming calls only when you can no t be reached and your phon e status is set to unreachable. – Cancel All cancels all call forward ing functions. • Call W aiting : this network serv ice informs you when someone is trying to reach you during a nother call.

Changing Y our Settings 71 Bluetooth Secure Mode When the Bluetooth Visibility is turned on, your phone is wirelessly transmitting its ph one name and status to every device within its range. This tr ansmission can pose a security risk and incite unauthorized connection to your pho ne.
72 Configuring Y our Phone’s USB Settings This menu selects the method of communicati on for the USB port. Note: The Bluetooth feature must first be disa bled befor e initia ting a USB connection with the phone. Prior to connecting the USB cable to the phone, install the latest version of the PC Studio applica tion.

Cellular Video 79 Section 7: Cellular Video Y our phone is equi pped with a WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) browser which allows you to access t he Internet and download medi a files directly to your phone. The se media files are displayed using the built-in Medi a Play er .
