Getting Started 6 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to get started wi th your phone by installing and charging the batter y , installing th e SIM card and optional memor y card, and setting up your voice mail. Before using your phone for the firs t time, you’ll need to install and charge the batt ery and install the S IM card.
7 T ext Conventions This manual provides condensed in formation abou t how to use your phone. T o make this possible , the following text conventi ons are used to represent often-used steps: Example: “From the Home screen, press ( Menu ) ➔ Setting s ➔ Wirele ss and network ➔ Bluetooth settings .
Getting Started 8 T o replace the battery cover: 䊳 Position the batter y cover over t he batter y compartment and pre ss dow n until you hear a click . SIM Card Over view Import ant!: Before removing or replacing the battery cover , make sure the phone is switched off.
9 T o remove the SIM card: 1. If installed, re move the battery from its co mpartment (1 and 2). The battery can bloc k the proper remov al of the SIM card from the slot. 2. Carefully slide the SI M card out of the SIM card socke t. Note: If the card is not inserted correctly, the phone will not detect it and nor service will be available.
Getting Started 10 Re moving the microSD Mem or y Car d 1. Remove the battery cover . 2. Firmly pres s the card into the slot and rele ase it. The card should pop partially out of the slot. 3. Remove the card from the slot. Batter y Before using your phone for the fi rst time, install t he batter y and charge it full y .
11 Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable Li-ion batte r y . A wall charger , which is used for charging the batter y , is included with your phone. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.
Getting Started 12 Note: This illustration displays both the correct and incorrect orientation for connecting the charger . If the charger is incorrectly connected, damage to the accessory port will occur therefore voiding the phone’s warranty .
13 Extending Y our Batter y Life Active applications, light levels, Bluetooth usage, and GPS functional ity all act to drain your battery . The following is a list of helpful tips that can help conserve your batter y power: • Use the Power Control shortcut bar .

Note: A green bar displayed beneath the icon means the application is active (turned on). The green bar is removed from benea th the icon when the feature is deactivated (turned off).

Creating a New Google Account Y o u should create a Go ogle ™ Account when you first use your device in order to fully ut ilize the functionalit y .
Getting Started 16 T o create a new Google Account from the We b : 1. From a computer , launch a We b browser and navigate to www .google.com . 2. On the main pa ge, click Sign-in ➔ Sign up for a new Google Account . 3. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your free a ccount.
17 For new users, follow the instruct ions below to set up voice mail: Note: Voicemail setup may be different depending on your network. 1. From the Home screen, tap and then touch and hold the key until the phone dials voi ce mail. Y ou may be prompted to enter a pass word.

Understanding Y our Phone 24 Displays your current battery is 100 percent charged. This icon is fo llowed by an audible beep. Displays your battery is currently charging. Displays your curren t battery charge level is very low. Shows your current battery only has three percent power remaining and will immediately shutdown.

Understanding Y our Phone 26 Notificatio n Bar The Notifica tion area indicates new message events (data sync status, new messages, calendar ev ents, call status , etc). Y ou can expand this area to provide more detailed informa tion about the current on-screen notification icons.
27 Function K eys Y our phone comes equipped with fo ur main function keys that can be used on any screen: Menu , Home , Back , and Search . Menu Key The Menu key ( ) activate s an availabl e menu function for the current screen or application.
Understanding Y our Phone 28 Search Key The Search key ( ) displays the Goog le Search box that can be used to search for either a key term both on the phone and online. In some i nstances, this key opens a sear ch box speci fic only to the current application.

From an open Voice Search dialog, speak the following words to access additi onal features such as: • voice actions (such as: [your query]) allows you to search the web by speaking the search parameters.
Understanding Y our Phone 30 Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using the applications on your phone. There are seven availa ble panels, ea ch populated with default shortcuts or applications. Y ou ca n customize each of these panels.
31 Note: Both the status bar and primary shortcuts are visible across all screens. • Google search is an on-screen Internet search engine powere d by Google™. T ouch to access the Voice Search fe ature where you can verbally enter a search term and initiate an online search.
Understanding Y our Phone 32 As you transition from screen to screen, the screen counter (located at the top) displa ys the current panel number in a circ le. Screen Navigation Using the touch screen display and the keys, you can navigate the features of your pho ne and enter characters.
33 • Press and hold : Pressing relates to use of the hardware keys and buttons to select or activate an item. F or example: press the Navigation key to scroll through a menu. Some buttons and keys require you to press and hold the m to activate a feature, for example, you press the Lock key to lock and un lock the phone.
Understanding Y our Phone 34 • Pinch : “Pinch” the screen using your thumb and forefinger to zoom out when viewing a picture or a W eb page. (Move fingers inward to zoom out.) • Spread : “Spread” the screen using your thum b and forefinger to zoom in when viewing a picture or a W eb page.
35 Using Sub- Menus Sub-menus are avai lable from within most screen and applications. 1. Press . A sub-menu displays at the bottom of the phone screen. 2. T a p an option. Using Context Me nus Context menus (also called pop- up menus) contain options that apply to a speci fic item on the s c reen.

Understanding Y our Phone 38 Camera Launches the bui lt-in 5.0 megapixel camera applicati on from where you can take a picture with either th e front or rear facing cameras. Note: An SD card must be inserted before the camera will take and store photos.
39 Files Lets you view supported ima ge files and text fi les on your microSD card. Organi ze and st ore data, ima ges, and more in your own personal fil e fold ers. Files are st ored to the memory card in separate (user defined) folders. For more informat ion, refer to “F iles” on pa ge 121.

43 Customizing Y our Screens Y ou can customize the Home sc reens (panels) to display the Widgets, Shortcuts, Folders, or Wallpapers. For example, one screen could cont ain the Music Player sh ort cut and other fo rms of media, while another screen mi ght contain communicati on apps such as Gmail and IM.
Understanding Y our Phone 44 Adding and Deleting Screens Y our phone comes with seven sc reens. Y ou can delete these screens and then ad d them back later . Note: These screens can be deleted and re-arranged. Import ant!: Y our phone can only contain at most seven screens and at least one screen.
45 3. Press and then tap Edit . A box outline then appears around the applica tion icons. 4. Scroll through the list and lo cate the desire d application. 5. T ouch and hold the on-screen icon, then drag it o ver one of the four primary shortcuts to replace it.

Understanding Y our Phone 48 Managing W allpapers Wallpapers consist of eithe r Gallery images (user taken), Live wallpapers (animated ba ckgrounds), or W allpa per gallery (default phone wallpapers). Note: Selecting animated Live wallpapers will require additional batter y power .
49 Section 3: Memor y Car d Y our device lets you use a microSD (SD) or microSDHC card (also referred to as a memory card) to expand a vailable me mory space. This secure digital card enables you t o exchange i mages, music, and data between SD-com patible devices.
Memory Card 50 Important! : DO NOT remove a microSD card while the device is accessing or transferring files. Doing so will result in loss or damage of data. Make sure your battery is fully charged before using the microSD card. Y our data may become damaged or lost if the batter y runs out while you are using the microSD card.
51 SD card Memor y Status T o view the memory allocation for your external SD card : 䊳 Press ➔ and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ SD card and phone storage . The available m emory displays under the T otal spa ce and Available space headings. Erasing Files from the SD card Y o u can erase files from the SD card using the phone.

53 Ending a Call from the Status Bar 1. T ap the Status bar to reveal th e Notifications tab, and then drag the tab to t he bottom of t he screen to o pen the Notifications panel (1). 2. Ta p End to close the currently active cal l (2). Dialing Options When you enter numbers on the Keypad, you will se e three on- screen options.
Call Functions and Contacts List 54 • Add 2 sec pa use to insert a two-second pause to enter a 2-second delay within a number string (the phone continues dialing after 2 seconds without any additional keys being pres sed). • Add wait to insert a hard pause within the number string (the ph one waits for your input).
55 T o add a prefix: 1. From the Home screen, press and then tap ( Settings ) ➔ Call settings ➔ All calls ➔ Prefix dialing ➔ Enable prefix dialling . 2. Ta p Prefix dialling list ➔ Create . The list is empt y until you add a prefix. 3. Enter a prefix number using the keypad and tap Save .
Call Functions and Contacts List 56 3. A menu prompts you to co nfirm your selection. If you said a name with more than one match in Contacts, or if you stored mo re than one number for the cont act, you are prompted to se lect from mu ltiple opti ons.
57 Wa it Dialing Inserting a Wait into your dial ing sequence means that the phone waits until it hears a dial tone before proceeding with the next sequence of numbers. 1. From the Home screen, tap and use the on-screen keypad to enter the p hone numb er .
Call Functions and Contacts List 58 Setting Up Speed Dial Entri es Import ant!: Speed dial location #1 is reserved for Voicemail. No other number can be assigned to this slot. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. Press and then tap Speed dial setting . The Speed dial screen displays a virtual keyp ad with the numbers 1 through 9.
59 4. Press to return to the previous screen. Making a Ca ll Using Speed Dial Y ou can assign a short cut numbe r to a phone number in the Contacts List for speed dialing. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. T ouch and hold a spee d dial location (numbers 2-9, or 1 if you are dialing voice mail) unt i l the number begins to dial.
Call Functions and Contacts List 60 Launching Wi -Fi Calling Note: Verify you are currently connected to a Wireless Access Point. 1. Ensure that the Wi-Fi connected icon displays on the status bar . The network name s and security settings (Open network or Secure d with WEP) of detect ed Wi-F i networks display in the Wi-Fi networks section.
61 6. Use the phone D i aler , call log, or contact s list to make a call. 7. Confirm you established a Wi-F i calling connection to the T -Mobile network by making sure appears at the top of the screen and a ppears during the call. 8. Go to the dialer an d make a call.

63 Muting a Call 1. Ta p ( Mute off ) to turn mute on so the other ca ller cannot hear you s peaking. 2. Ta p ( Mute on ) to turn mute off and resume your conversa tion. Switching to B l uetooth Head set 1. While on a call, s witch to the Bluetooth headset instead of speaker by tapping Headset .

Note: The new caller appears at the top of the list. The previous caller is placed on hold and appears at the bottom of the list.

69 Erasing the Call Log Y ou can delete either an individual call log entry or all current entries from the Call logs list. T o clear a single entry from the list: 1. From the Home screen, tap ➔ Call logs tab. 2. T ouch and hold an entry and select Delete .
Entering T e xt 70 Section 5: Entering T ext This section describes ho w to select the desired text input method when entering characters into your phone. This section also describes the predictive text entry system that reduces the amount of key strokes a ssoci ated with entering text.
71 Using the Swype K eyboar d Swype™ is the default text i nput method that allo ws you to enter a word by sliding your finger or st ylus from letter to letter , lift ing your finger between words. SWYPE uses error correcting algorithms and a language mode l to predict the next word.

73 Swype K eyboard Overview • Recipients : a field where you can enter the recipients of the current message. Y ou can choose from Recent, Contacts, or Group.

75 Entering Numbe rs and Symbols in Sw ype By using the onscreen keyboard in portrait mode , some symbols are not availa ble (such as Emoticons or Smiley s). In SYM mode using Swype, you can only enter symbols and numbers from the onscreen keyboard. Once in SYM mode, the text mode key sho ws .
Entering T e xt 76 T he Sam sung K eypad This device has a built-in, QWER TY key pad (portrait mode) or keyboard (landscape mode). Using the QWERTY keypad/ keyboard, you can type letter , nu mbers, punctuat ion, and othe r characters. T o use the Samsung keypad you m ust first configure the settings to default to the Samsung keypad.
77 Changing the QWER TY Input Type 1. From a screen where you can en ter text, tap th e text input field to reveal the on -screen keyboard. 2. With Samsung keypad as your text entry method, sel ect one of the follo wing text mode opt ions: • Abc Mode to use al phabetic ch aracters fro m the on-screen ke yboard.

81 Section 6: Contacts This section explains how to use and manage your Contacts List. Y ou can save phone numbers to your phone’ s memory. Accounts From the Accounts menu you decide if you want applications to synchronize, send, and receive data at any given time , or if you want the applications to sync hronize automatically .
Contacts 82 Contacts List Cre ating a Contact The default storage l ocation for saving phone numbers to your Contacts List is your phone’ s built-in memory . If existing Googl e and Corporate email accounts have been synchronized to your phone, these will be made available to your device during the creation of new entries.
83 Note: Y ou can also add a new contact by entering a number from the keypad and pressing and then tap Add to Contacts ➔ ( Create contact ). Continue with step 3. 3. T ap a destination type ( Phone , SIM , T -Mobile Contacts backup, Google , or Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync ) (depending on where you want to save the new contact information).

89 Next time you synchronize your phone with your accounts, any updates contacts m ake to email account names , email addresses, etc. automatically update in your contacts list. For more information about synchronizing accounts, see “Get Friends” on page 93.

Contacts 92 Copyin g Contact In for mation t o the micr oSD Card This procedure allows you to copy entry information saved on the phone’ s memory, onto the SIM card. 1. From the Home screen, tap . 2. From the Contacts Lis t, press and then tap Import/Export ➔ Export to SD card .
93 5. Yo u r Contacts tab then reflects any updated Contact information. Note: Syncing of contacts requires you are logged into your Gmail and Corporate accounts via the device.
Contacts 94 6. After synchronizing accounts yo u may want to link con tact information. For more information, refer to “Joining Contact Information” on page 88. T o add Facebook content to your Contacts list: Y ou can now add your Facebook contact information, such as pictures, email, and phone numbers directly to your Contacts list.
95 T o edit My Pro file: 1. With My profile displayed, press and then ta p Edit . 2. Modify any of the information contained in My Profile, th en tap Save .
