7 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by fi rst configuring your hardware, activating your service, and then setting up your Vo icemail.
Getting Started 8 Re moving t he Batter y 䊳 Lift up (1) and remove (2) the battery. Inst alling the SIM Car d Important!: The plug-in SIM card and its contacts information can be easily damaged by scra tching or bending, so be careful when handling, inserting, or removing the card.
9 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Re-orient the card back into the slot. Replacing the Ba tter y 1. Slide the batte ry into the comp artment so that th e tabs on the end align with t he slots at the b ottom of the phone.
Getting Started 10 Inst alling or Remo vi ng the Memor y Car d Y our phone supports an optional memory card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as music, pictures, video or other files. This type of me mory card is designed fo r use with this mobile phone and other devices.

Getting Started 12 Char ging a B atter y Y our phone is powered by a recharge able Lithium ion batter y . A wal l ch arger , which is used for charging the battery, is inc luded with your phone. Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask yo ur local Samsung dealer for further details.
13 2. Plug the adapter’ s power plug into a standard AC wall outlet. 3. When charging is finished, fi rst unplug the adapter’ s power plug from the AC wall outlet an d then d isconnect the wall charger’ s conn ector from the phone.

19 Unlocking the Pho ne When you first turn on the device the screen is lo cked (as shown) and displays the Smart unlock guide (see “Smart Unlock” on page 178.) Press and hold the lock icon on the si de of the phone or draw a character to unlock the phone.
Understanding Y our Phone 20 Icons This list identifies the sy mbols that appear on your phone’ s display screen: Displays the received signal strength. The greater the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Displays when y ou are out of your s ervice area.
21 Backligh t A backlight illumi nates the internal display and the keypad. When you pre ss any key , the backlight turns on. Backlight turns off when no keys ar e pressed or pressed within a give n period of time , depending on the Backlight menu setting.

23 Section 3: Displays This section explains the widg et and menu navigation for your phone. It also i nclude s an outline of all the available menus associated with your phone. Home Screen The Home screen is the starting point for using the applications or widgets on your phone.
Displays 24 Customizi ng the Ho me Screen Y ou can customize the Home sc reen by docking wi dgets on differ ent panels of the Home screen, or selecting a new wallpaper so you can easily distinguish between each of the individual panels. Selecting a New Wallpaper There are several source s availabl e fo r wallpapers.
25 W idget Manager The Widget manager allows you to select widgets to display in the Widget bar . Y ou can select widgets that function offline or wid gets that function online (such as M yAccount , web2go, and more).

27 Openin g an Appli cation The Home screen is the firs t screen displayed. The Main Functions menu displays afte r you select the Menu icon. T o open an applica tion from the mai n menu: 1. T ap the associated icon. 2. Press the Back icon to return to the ma in menu.

F or example: press and hold on a Home screen to acce ss a menu of customization options. Note: When you touch and hold the widget it transfers and to the Home screen and launches the application.
Navigation 34 Accessing the Hom e Screen Slide means to quickly d rag your finger verti cally or hor izontally on the scree n to move the area of foc us or to scrol l through a list. F or example: slide your finger left or right on the Home scre en to scroll among the three screens.
35 Screen Rotation The screen can be rotated to change th e orientation from portrait (defau lt) to landscape. F or example: rotate to landscape orientation when entering text, to provide a larger keyboard, or when viewing web content to minimize scrolling.

37 Alar m Clock This feature allows you to: • Set up to 10 alarms to ri ng at specified times. • Set the phone to sw itch on automaticall y and ring the alarm even if the phone is s witched off. T o set the alarm: 1. From th e Home screen, press then touch Alarm .
Navigation 38 Bluetooth From this application you can ac tivate Bl uetooth and configure it so othe r Bluetooth devices can see your device by name. 䊳 From the Home screen, open the Widget tray and touch, drag and drop, then ta p the Bluetooth icon to launch the Bluetooth a pplica tion.
39 Digital Clock The display shows the current time on a digital clock. 䊳 From the Home screen, open the Widget tray and touch, drag and drop the Digital clock onto the desktop t o view the time in a digita l format. For more informat ion, refer to “Digit al Clock” on page 135.
Navigation 40 Google Maps Google Maps allow you to track you r current loca tion, view real-time traffic issues, and view detailed destina tion directions. There is also a search tool included to help you locate places of interest or a specific addre ss.
41 Widget Memo This feature allows you to create a mem o. 1. From the Home screen, open the Widget tray and tap the Memo widget. 2. Ta p t h e Memo widget again to insert a memo, then touch Done . Message Inbox The Message Inbox stores received messages.
Navigation 42 Music Player When you first view the Music Player a pplication, the Music librar y screen displays th e following: • Current playlist • All tracks • Playlists • Artists • Albums • Recently played From this screen you ca n play your music files.
43 Social Buzz This menu item lets you log in to your social networking appl ications (T witter , Facebook, or MySpace) and get automati c status updates for each of these applications. Important!: Charges may apply when using social network applications.
Navigation 44 T oday This menu displays the current day and date. 䊳 T ouch, drag and drop the T oday icon onto the desktop to view th e current Day and Date.
45 W eather Provides weather information and alerts so you c an cope with t he elements. En ter the zip code for the area where you are lo cated to activ ate the alerts. 1. From the Home screen, open the Widget tray and touch, drag and drop the Weat he r widget onto the Home screen.
Navigation 46 Accessing W idgets W idget Bar Naviga t ion Y ou can drag the widgets to the desktop to use t he application or feature, th en drag it back to the Widget bar when you are finished.
47 Dra ggi ng and Dr oppi ng Certain menus allow yo u to move (drag and drop) an application onto the Main display screen . For example, you can drag the Music Playe r from the Shortcut menu onto the Ma in display screen using the dr ag and drop fea ture (see illustration).

49 Scrolling The Widget bar contains up to 25 wi dgets, but can only d isplay fi ve widget icons at one time. T o view more widgets: 䊳 Swipe up and down along the Widget bar . Tip: Flick the screen in an upward motion to quickly scroll through the list.

Call Functions 52 Re dialing the Last Number The phone stores the numbers of the calls you ha ve dialed, received, or missed if the caller is identified.
53 Options During a Call Y our phone provides a number of control f unctions that are av ailable for use during a call. T ur ni ng the Speakerp hone on a nd of f While on a ca ll, you can use yo ur Speakerphone by pressing the Speaker icon to turn the speakerphone on or o ff.
Call Functions 54 Viewing the Call log During a call you can touch the Call log icon to view All calls , All , Missed calls , or Outgoing calls . This feature might be useful if, during a call, you want to add another contact to a multiparty cal l. 1.
55 Accessing the Contacts During a Call Y ou can search for a number in Contacts during a call. 1. T ouch t he Contacts icon to access the Contact list s. 2. Press when you are finished. Ending a Call 1. Briefly press to end the call. – or – 2. T ouch t he End icon to the right of the phone number for which you want to end the call.
Call Functions 56 T o view a missed call immedia tely: 1. If the display is off, press the Lock key to turn the display on. The misse d calls display on the screen on the Missed Calls tab. 2. Press to call the display ed number . Tip: Y ou can press at any time to exit the Missed Call feature.
57 Delete Pressing this key allo ws you to delete the records in each c all record separa tely , or you ca n delete all of your cal l records at one time. 1. T ouch the check box be si de the number in the Delete list to delete or select the Select all check box and touch the Delete soft key .
Call Functions 58 3. T o return to the mult i-party call, touch the Join icon. All of the multi-party call particip ants can now hear each other . Dropping One Par ticipant If the call is j oined: 1. Press Options ➔ Split and highlight the number to split.
59 Searching for a Number in Contacts Y ou can search for a number in Contacts during a call. 1. T ouch t he Contacts icon. With Contacts displayed: 2. T ouch the con t act name displayed in the list to view the entry . The Contact info rmation displays.
Call Functions 60 Say a Comm and Options • Call <Name o r #> : dials a name or number listed in yo ur contact list . If multiple n umbers exist (i.e. home, work , or other) say the name and the number type (location). • Send T ext <N ame or #> : displays the Create T ext Message screen.
61 Contacts V o ice Activation On startup, Nuance reads your Contac ts and voice-activates all the na mes. When you have add or c hange contacts, N uance automatically reloads an d voice-activate s the list when you add or modify a contact. Name Dialing T o use Name Dial, you need ent ries stored in your Contacts.
Call Functions 62 Name Lookup T o perform a name lookup, you will need to have some en tries i n your Cont act list . T o access Voice: 1. From the Home scr een, press then touch Applications ➔ Voice recognition . After a brief pause, a list of available comm ands displays on the screen along with the “ Say a command ” message.
63 Checking P hone Status Use the Check command to se e and hear status information from your phone, including its phone number , status, current signal strength, and battery level. T o check phone status: 1. From the Home screen, press then touch Applications ➔ Voice recognition .
Call Functions 64 Adaptation If Nuance frequently does no t recognize your commands, adap ting digit dialing to your voice improves the accurac y of digit. After you adapt Digit D ial, your phone recognizes only your voice. Other use rs are not ab le to use the handset with Nuance unless the handset is reset to fact ory defaults.
65 3. Select one of the followin g options: •E x p e r t M o d e : turns of f the voice and text promp ts. •P r o m p t M o d e : this is t he default mo de. Uses a voi ce prompt to confir m your selection and also disp la ys a confir mation scree n.
Entering T ext 66 Section 6: Entering T e xt This section outlines how to se lect the desired text inp ut mode when enteri ng characters into yo ur phone. This section also describes how to use the T9 predicti ve text entry system to reduce the nu mber of key stroke s associated with entering text.
67 3. Sym/shift displays pages of Symbols. Choose from an exte nsive list of symbols an d other character sets. Alt+Sym/shif t allows you to ent er the Symbo l displayed on the key . Also converts the alphabe tic characte r into uppercase. Changes the text input mode to Upper/Lower case mode.
Entering T ext 68 Example: Writing a text message. There are two different meth ods for changing T ext Input Mode, depending on which mode you are holding the device (portrait, or landscape). In Portrait mode a 3x 4 numeric keypad disp lays wi th the default set to T9Ab (predictive tex t) mode.
69 Using T9 Mode T9 is a predictive text inpu t mode that allows you to key in any charac ter using sing le keystr okes. This text input mode is based o n a built-in d ictionary . Note: T o mode works only in Portrait mode. T o enter a word in T9 mode: 1.
Entering T ext 70 Note: This feature may not be available for some languages. • T o enter periods, hyphens, and oth er special characters, touch Symbols and then touch the corresponding ke y . If the symbol does not display on the initia l screen, touch the left or right key to display the next set of symbols .
71 Tip: The cursor moves to the right when you touch a different key. When entering the same letter twice or a different letter on the same key , wait for a few seconds for the cursor to automatically move to the right, and then select the next letter .

Y ou can sa ve phone numbers to your phone’ s memory or to your SIM card. Using Mobile Address Book Use the following procedures to st ore a new contact to your phone.

75 Making a Call fro m Cont acts Once you have stored phone numbers in the Contacts li st, yo u can dial them easily and qui ckly by using the location numbers that were assigned to them. Note: If you cannot remember a location number , you must search the Phonebook to find an entry by name.

77 Speed Dialing Once you have stored phone num bers to Contacts, you can set up to 17 spee d dial entries and then dial them easily whenever you want, simply by pressing the associated numeric key . In phone mode, to speed dial the numbers assigned to keys (2 to 18), touc h and hold the appropriate key .

85 New Message s T a b The New Messages T ab is an area that displays on th e screen when a missed call, new m essage, or voicema il is sent to the phone. There are three New Messages tabs that display icons are Ne w message, Missed calls, and Voice mail message.

87 T ext Messages Short Messag e Service (SMS) al lows you to send and rec eiv e short text message s to and from othe r mobile phones. The Message icon ( ) displays when yo u receive a new text message. W hen the memor y is full, the message icon flashes o n your phone and yo u cannot receive any new messages.

97 Email Messages Email enables yo u to review and create e-mail using AIM ® , AOL ® , Y ahoo! ® Mail, Comcast, Comp userve, Earthlink, Gmail, HotPOP , Juno, Mac, NetZero, S BC Y ahoo!, Verizon and several other emai l services. Y ou can also rece ive text message alerts when you receive an impo rtant e-mail.

99 IM (Instant Messaging) Instant Messaging (IM) is a wa y of sending short, simp le messages that are delivered immediately to users online at that moment. Before using this feature, you need to subscribe to a messenger se rvice. For further detail s, contact your service provider .
