4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone by fi rst configuring your hardware, activating your ser vice, and then setting up your voice mail.
Getting Started 5 3. Lift and remove the batter y . 4. Carefully slide the SIM card into the SIM card socket until t he card locks into place. Make sure that the card’ s gold contacts face into the phone and that the upper-left angled corner of the card is positioned as shown below.

Reinstall the battery cover by sliding it back onto the phone until you hear it securely click.
Getting Started 7 Char ging a Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rech argeable Li-ion bat tery . A tra vel adapter , which is used for charging the batter y , is included with your phone. Use only ap proved batteries and chargers. Ask yo ur local Samsung de aler for further details.
8 3. When charging is finished, fi rst unplug the adapter’ s power plug from the AC wall outlet an d then disconnect the travel ada pter’ s connector from the phone then rese cure the plasti c cover over the interfa ce jack on the phone.
Getting Started 9 Setting Up Y our V oice Mail For new users, follow the instru ctions below to set up voice mail: 1. From I dle mode, press and hold on the keypad. Y ou may be prompted to enter a password. 2. Follow th e tutorial to create a pa ssword, a greeting, and your name.

Understanding Y our Phone 11 Open View of Y our Phone The following illustrati ons show the main elem ents of your phone: Ke ys The following list correlates to the illustrations. 1. Earpiece allows you to hear the other caller and the different ring tones or sounds offered by your phone.
12 4. Cancel/Clear key deletes characters from the displ ay . In Me nu mode, this key returns you to the previous menu level. 5. Browser key acts as a shortcut key to access the browser . 6. Voice mail key allows you to quickly access your voice mail .
Understanding Y our Phone 13 14. OK (Select) key allows you to accept th e choices offered when navigating through a menu. 15. Display shows all the i nformation needed to operate your phone, such as the received signal strength, phone battery le vel, and time.
14 Display Layout Y our phone’s display screen provides a wealth of informat ion about your phone’ s status and options. The display has 3 areas: Missed Messages T ab When you receive new messages, icons display in two locations, on th e phone’s s creen, Missed Messages tab, and in the icon bar at the top of the screen.
Understanding Y our Phone 15 Icons This list identifies the symbols you’ll see on your phone ’ s display screen: Shows the received signal streng th. The grea ter the number of bars, the stronger the signal. Shows the level of your battery. The more bars you see, the more po wer you have remainin g.
16 Backligh t A backlight il luminates the i nte rnal display and the keypad. When you press any key, the backlight comes on. It goes off when no keys are pressed wi thin a give n perio d of time, d e pending on the setting within the Backlight menu. The display turns off after one minute to conserve battery po wer .

18 Section 3: Call Functions This section de scribes how to make or an swer a call. It also explains the features and functionality associated with making or answe ring a call. F or mo re information on ringtones see “Ringtone” on page 59. For more information on Call Forward ing see “Call forwarding” on page 70.

Before you dial the number , you may also press the Options soft key to di splay the following opti ons: • Call back : Places a call back to the number . • Send message : Allows y ou to se nd a T ext mess age, Pi cture mess age, or Audio pos tcard.
20 Note: Y ou can answer a call while using the Phonebook or menu features. After ending the call, the phone returns to the function scre en you were previously using. Call Records All incoming, outgoing and missed calls are listed in th e Call Records.

22 Call time This menu lets you view the time log for calls both ma de and received. Note: The actual time invoiced by T -Mobile may differ from times displayed due to network features and ser vice plan. The following time logs are available: • Last call time : displays the length of yo ur last call.
Call Functions 23 Soft Keys The roles of the soft keys va ry depending on the function you are currently using. The labels on the bottom line of the display just above each key indicate thei r current role. Selecting Options T o view the various functions and options avai lable, you must select the one you want by: 1.
24 When you access a list of options, your phone highlights the current ly active option. If , however , there are only t wo options, such as On/Off or Enable/Disable , your phone highlights the option that is not currently active, so that you can select it directly .
Call Functions 25 3. Press the Options soft key , select Hold , and press . This places the curre ntly active call on hold and allows you to make a ne w call.
26 With the Phone book entries display ed: 3. Enter the name that you wish to find in the textbox located a bove the entrie s. If you enter the first few letters of the name, the Phonebook entries are listed st arting with the first entry ma tching your input.

28 Section 4: Menu Na vigation This section explains the menu navigation for your phone. Menu Naviga tion Y ou can tailor the phone’s range of functions to your needs using me nus and sub-menus. Menus and sub-menus can be accessed by scrolling using the Na vigation keys or by using shortcuts.
Menu Navigation 29 Using Shortcuts The menu items, such as menus, sub-men us, and options, are numbere d and can be accesse d quickly by using their shortcut numbers. For the main men us, you can access any one of them by pressing the number keys (1 to 0) corresponding to their location on the screen.
30 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines how to select the desired text input mode wh en entering characters into your phone. This section also des cribes h ow to us e the T9 pr edic tive text system to reduce the number of key stro kes associated with enteri ng text.
Entering T ext 31 1. T o change the text input mode, press the Right soft key . 2. Scroll to the mode yo u prefer and press the Select soft key or . The text input mode indicator displays in the lower right corner of your display . The following optio ns are available: • T9 (English) • ABC mode • Number • Symbol 3.
32 Example: T o enter “Hello” in T9 mode, press the 4, 3, 5, 5, and 6 keys. The word that you type displays on the screen. It may cha nge with each consecuti ve key that you press. 2. Enter the whole word b efore editing or deletin g the keystrokes.
Entering T ext 33 • T o shift case in T9 mode, press . There are 3 cases: Initial capital, Capital lo ck, and Lower case. The case displays in the upper , right corner of the screen. • Y ou can move the cursor by using the Navigation keys. T o delete letters, press .
34 Using Number The Number mode enables you to en ter numbers into a text message. 䊳 Press the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter . Using Symbol Mode Symbol mode enables you to insert sy mbols and punctuation marks into text. T o display a list of symbols press and hold .
Understanding Y our Phonebook 35 Section 6: Understanding Y our Phonebook This section explains how to use and manage your Phonebook. Y ou can sa ve phone numbers to your phone’ s memor y or to your SIM card.
36 •R i n g t o n e : allows you to assign a Ringtone by choosing from one of the following loca tions: Default melodies, Voice list, or Sounds. •E - m a i l : allows you to enter the emai l address f or the contact. •F a x : assigns the number e ntered to the Fax entr y .

38 Tip: Press the Down Navigation key to access the Contact list and bypass the menu. Note: The Phone and SIM card option from Management ➔ View contacts option must be selected in order to display both Phone and SIM entries. Any contact which was stored on the SIM card displays with a SIM card icon to the left of the entry.

From Idle mode, press and hold the keypad corresponding to the s peed dial location number for the desired phone number you want to dial. 2. If you don’t know the l ocation number , press and the first loca tion number displays.

Management The Management menu allows you to select wher e your contacts are saved, copy your SIM contacts to your phone and phone contacts to your SIM card, sort by contacts, delete your contacts, or check your memory status.

44 FDN List FDN (Fixed Dial Number) mode, if supported by your SIM card , allows you to rest rict your ou tgoing calls to a limited set of phone numbers. The FDN List allo ws you to set up a list of numbers that your phone may dial. FDN mode must f irst be enabled in th e Security settings.
Messages 45 Section 7: Messages This section describe s how to send or receiv e different type s of me ssages. It also expla ins the features and functional ity associated with messaging.

Messages 47 Picture Messaging is a messa ging service tha t provides delive ry of personal picture messa ges from phone to phone or from phone to email. In addition to the fami liar text content a vailable vi a traditional text messages, picture messages can contain images, graphics, voice, and audio clips.

Messages 49 Inbo x The Inbox stores messages that you have receiv ed. Y ou can tell what kind of message it is by t he icon displayed. If the open envelope ic on displays then the messa ge was read, otherwise the closed envelope icon displays.

While reading a text message , you ma y choose the follow ing op tions by pressing the Options soft key: • Reply via : allows you to send a reply to th e sender by sending a T ext message, Picture messag e, or Audio postcard.

Messages 53 Before using this feature, you need to subscribe to a messenger service. For further deta ils, contact T -Mobile customer service. Y our handset has 4 pre-loaded Messaging services (AIM, Windows Live, and Y ahoo!). Star ting yo ur Instant Messaging 1.
54 Sentbo x This message box stores messages that you a tte mpted to send but have not actually sent. When you enter th is menu, the list of mess ages in the bo x displays with the recipients’ phone numbers or names, if availa ble in your Phoneboo k.
Messages 55 Te m p l a t e s Besides entering message text using the keypad keys, yo u can speed message composit ion by inc luding copies of stored text and/or image templates in your message. 1. From Idle mode, press the Me nu ➔ Messages ➔ T emplates .
56 Settings The Settings menu allows you to select where your contacts are saved, co py y our contacts to your phone or SIM card, delete your contacts, or check your memor y status. 䊳 From Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Messages ➔ Settings . Messages 57 Picture message Send settings • Delivery report : when this option is enabled, the network inform s you whether or not your message was delivered. • Read reply : when this option is enabled, yo ur phone sends a request for a reply along with yo ur message to the recipient.

It in clud es such settings as: display , security , memory , and any extra settings associated with your phone. myFa ves Setting s myFaves Settings disp lays only if you subscribe to this service.
60 Alert type This menu allows you to specify how info rm you of incoming calls. U se the Right or Left key to select an Alert type. The following opti ons are available: – Melody : the phone rings u sing the ring melody selected in the Ringtone menu.

62 Info display This menu allows you to set text style (Outline, Shadow, or Normal) and te xt color (White, Y ell ow , Blue, Green, Red, or Black). 1. Press the Left or Right Navigation keys to chang e the settings. 2. Press the Save soft key to apply your changes, or the Cancel soft key to cancel.
Changing Y our Settings 63 Greeti ng messa ge This menu allows you to set a greeting to displ ay brie fly when the phone is switch ed on. For details about entering characters, see “Entering T ext” on page 30.
64 The following opti ons are available: • Time zone updating : allows you to receive time information from T -Mobile’ s network. – Automatic : the phone automatically updates the time and date according to the current time zone using the netw ork service.

HA C mode Enabling HAC (Hearing Ai d Compatib ility) Mode adjusts the volume for HAC comp liant devices u sed with this handset. Important!: Enabling the HAC mode can affect the quality of the phone (voice) conversation.
