Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your phone b y configuring yo ur hardware and setting up your voice mail. Understanding this User Manual The sections of this manu al generally follow the features of your phone.
6 Installing the Batter y Remo v ing th e Batter y C o ver 1. Remove the battery cover by placing your thumbnail in the slot at the bot tom of the phone (1). If you have fr agile nails, use a pointe d object. 2. Lift the co ver up and off th e phone (2).
Getting Started 7 Installing the Batter y 1. Align the gold c ontacts of the batter y with the co ntacts in the batt ery compartment in the phone (1). 2. Press the battery down until it clic ks into plac e (2). Make sure th at the battery is properly inst alled before sw itching on the phone.
8 3. Replace th e battery cover onto the back of the phone in the direction shown by the arrow (1). 4. Press down along the botto m of the phone until you hear a light click (2). 5. Press down firmly along the edges to ensure that the cover is flush with the phone (3).
Getting Started 9 Charging a Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion batter y . The T r avel Adapt er that is used to charg e the battery , is incl uded with your phone. Use only Samsu ng- approved batteries and chargers. Y ou can use the phone while the battery is charging, although doing so requires additional charging t ime.
10 Important!: Verify that the handset battery is installed prior to connection. If the batter y is not properly installed and the wall charger is connected, the handset may power off and on continuously , preventing proper opera tion.
Getting Started 11 Switching the Pho ne On or Off 1. T o turn the ph one on, press and ho ld until the pho ne switches on. The phone launches the activation splash screen and searches for the network. Once the network has been fo und, you can make or receive calls.
12 Locking and Unlocking the Sc reen 1. T o lock the phone screen, press and hold . 2. T o unlock the phone screen, press th e Unlock soft key and then press the OK soft key . Note: The Auto Key Lock fea ture automatically locks th e screen when the screen ti mes out.

USB Pow er/Accessory connector: Allows you to connect a power cable or optional accessori es such as a USB/d ata cable. 2. Memory card port : Allows you to install a microSD or mi croSDHC card.
18 Back View The following illustration shows the back view of the phon e with the camera lens. 1. Camera Lens : Used to take pictur es and shoot videos. 2. External Speaker : Allows you to hear music. Display Layout Y our display scre en provides inf ormatio n about the phone’ s status and options.
Understanding Y our Phone 19 Icons The following list iden tifies th e symbols on your phone display: Shows the received signal strength. The greater the number of bars, the stronger th e signal. Shows the le vel of your batter y . The mo re bars you see, the more power remains.
20 Displays in the View T ab when you receive a new text or picture message. Displays in the View T ab when you receive a new voi ce mail. Displays when you set an alarm to ring at a specified time.
Understanding Y our Phone 21 Backlight A backlight illumina tes the internal display and the keypad. When you press any key , the backlight com es on. It goes off when no keys are pressed within a given period of time, depending on the setting in the Backlight T ime menu.
22 Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu navigation for your phone. Menus and su b-menus can be accessed by scroll ing using the Navigation key or by using the shortcut keys. Access ing a Menu 1. In Idle mode, press the Menu soft key and scroll using the Naviga tion keys to reach a main menu item.

24 Section 3: Call Functions This section describes how to make or answe r a call. Displaying Y our Phone Number 䊳 Press Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Phone ➔ Own Number . Making a Call 䊳 From the Idle screen, use the keypad to enter the number you wish t o call and press .
Call Functions 25 Corr ecting an Entered Num ber Use the following steps to correct a characte r entered incorrectly . 1. After entering a numbe r using the keypad: • If you make a mistake, press to erase a si ngle character . • Press and ho ld to erase t he entire str ing of numb ers.
26 Answ ering a Call When a call is received, the phone rings and displays the caller phone n umber or name, if stored in Contacts. 1. From the Incoming call screen, press or Accept . • If the Any Key option is activat ed ( Menu ➔ Settings ➔ Calls ➔ General ➔ Call Answer ), you can press any key to answer a call except .

Call Functions 29 Recent Calls The phone stores the numbers of the calls you’ve dialed, received, o r missed in the Recent Calls menu. 1. From the Idle Screen, press . 2. Press the Left or Right Navigation key to disp lay All calls , Missed calls , Calls Made , or Calls Received .
30 Viewing Missed C alls 1. From the Idle Screen, briefly press and use the Right navigation key to scroll to the Missed Calls screen. The recently missed calls display . 2. Scroll through the list of missed calls. As the call highlights, the details display .

Entering T e xt 33 Section 4: Entering T ext This section outlines how to select the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the QWERTY keyboard-style keypad. This section also descri bes how to use the T9 predictive text entry system to reduce the number of key strokes needed t o enter text.

Entering T e xt 35 Changing the T ext Input Mode The availabl e T ext Input modes a re: T9 Predictive T ext , Fn ( 123 numeric), Abc , and Symbols (Sym) .
36 Using T9 Predictiv e T ext The T9 Predi ctive T ext input method is ba sed on a built-in dict ionary . A series of keystrokes is interpreted by the phone using this dictionary to determine the l ikely word. 1. Press Options ➔ Te x t M o d e ➔ T9 Predictive T ext .
Entering T e xt 37 Add a New W ord into the T9 Diction ar y 1. After pressing the keys corresponding to the word you want to add, you can search for the word by using the touchpad (up/down). 2. When the last altern ative word displays, Spell displays.

Messages 39 Creating and Sending Messages 1. From the Idle screen, press Menu ➔ Messages ➔ Create Message . 2. Use the QWERTY keypad to enter a me ssage. 3. Press Insert to insert one of the fo llo wing into your message: •P i c t u r e : inserts a picture fr om the Picture s folder .

Note: If you accidentally exit from this notification screen, navigate to Menu ➔ Messages ➔ Inbox to access your messages.

48 Addin g Mor e Fiel ds to a Numb er While in th e process of creati ng a new entry or editing an existing cont act, you can add addition al fields to the entry’ s list of information. 1. Press Menu ➔ Contacts ➔ Contacts , highlight a contac t name and press .

50 Adding Pa uses to Contact Nu mbers When you call automa ted systems, you are often required to en ter a password or account number . Instead of manually entering the numbe rs each time, you can store the numbers in your Contacts along with special characters called pauses.
Managing Y our Contacts 51 Using Contacts Diali ng a Number from C ontacts Once you have stored phone numbers in Co ntacts, you can dial them by us ing their SIM card location number or by using th e Search field to loca te the entr y .

54 Creati ng New FDN Numbe rs With the Fixed Dial mode On, follo w these procedures: 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Contacts ➔ FDN Contact s . 2. Press Options ➔ Create FDN contacts . 3. Enter your PIN2 passwo rd and press the key . Note: The PIN2 code is provided by your Service Provider .

56 Adding an Entr y to a Group 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Contacts ➔ Groups . 2. Highlight a group entry and press the key . 3. Press Options ➔ Add Member , then press th e key . 4. Highlight a member from the list or highlight All and press Check .

58 Copyin g an Entr y t o the Phone 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Contacts ➔ SIM Management ➔ Copy Contacts from SIM . The phone displays a list of your current contac ts stored on th e SIM card. Note: If the entry’s associated Group image has a SIM location icon on it, then the entry exists on the SIM card.

64 Audio The Audio menu option allows you to shop t o nes, answer tones, and music using AppCenter . Y ou can also access previously st ored (pre-recorded) audio files from your internal microSD card. 1. Press Menu ➔ My Folder ➔ Audio . 2. Highlight an option ( Ringtones , Music , or Recorded Audio ).
My Folder 65 Re corded A udio This menu shows a list of sa ved voice memos. When a voice memo is reco rded and saved, it is stored in the Recorde d Au dio folder . T o access this menu use the following steps: 1. Press Menu ➔ My Folder ➔ Audio ➔ Recorded Audio .

The Music applicat ion can organize and play music files stor ed on your phone a nd memory card. Create playlists, add, rearrange and remove files, and launch the browser to shop for more music.
72 Music Option s The Music options menu configures your phone’ s music playing options s uch as shuffling the music files, lo oping music files, and adding son gs to the playlist. 1. In Idle mode, press Menu ➔ Music . 2. Navigate t o a music file and press t h e key.

Applications 79 Contacts List Voice Activa tion On startup, Nuance V oice Re cognition software reads your Contacts list and voice- activates al l the names. When you add or change co ntacts, the software automaticall y reloads and voice- activates the list when you add or mo dify a contact.

86 Calcul ator With this feature, you can use the phone as a calculator . The calculator prov ides the basic arithmetic functions; addition, subtraction, mu ltiplication, and division. 1. Press Menu ➔ T ools ➔ Calculator . 2. Enter the fi rst number usin g the keypad .
Applications 87 Eco Calcu lator The Eco Calculator ca lculates your auto mobile effici ency in do llars per mile and miles per gallon. It also calculates the emission of carbon dioxide assuming a gas- powered medium sized vehic le. 1. Press Menu ➔ To o l s ➔ Eco Calculator .
88 4. Highlight the field below the Un it and enter th e value you are converting Fro m. 5. Highlight the Unit you are converting to and press the Right Navigation key to select the desired Unit. 6. The resulting converted value automati cally displays below the second Unit field.
