Getting started 15 Installing the SIM card When you subscribe to a cellular network, you are provided with a plug-in SIM card loaded with y our subscription details, such as your PIN, an y optional services available, and much more. • K eep all SIM cards out of the reach of small children.
Getting started 16 Removing the SIM card T o remove the SIM card, slide the card out of the holder , as shown. Installing the battery Y our phone is powered by a rechargeable Li-ion battery . Use only approved batteries and chargers. Ask your local Samsung dealer for further details.
Getting started 17 Installing the battery 1. Slide down the battery cover and lift it awa y . 2. Place the battery so that the gold-coloured contact on the bottom right side align with the gold-coloured contact on the bottom right side of the phone and press the battery until it clicks into place.
Getting started 18 3. Slide the battery cover towards the top of the phone until it clicks into place. Make sure that the battery cov er is securely locked before switching on the phone. Removing the battery 1. If necessary , switch off the ph one by pressing and holding until the power-off image displays.
Getting started 19 Charging the battery Note : The phone can be used while the battery is b eing charged, but this causes the battery to charge more slowly . 1. Plug the connector of the travel charger into the bottom of the phone. Check that the arrow on the connector is facing up.
Getting started 20 3. When charging is finished, first unplug the charger from the power outlet. Then remove the charger from the phone by pressing the buttons on both sides of the connector and pulling the connector out. Switching on or off the phone 1.
Getting started 21 3. If the phone asks for a lock code, enter the lock code and press the OK soft key . The default lock code is 00000000 . F or further details, see page 246. The phone searches for your network, and after finding it, the Standby screen appears on the display .
Getting started 22 Using an optional memory card Using a memory card (MMC micro), you can store your multimedia files, such as video clips, sound file s, photos, and messaging data, and back up information f rom your phone ’s memory . Notes : • Use only compatible me mory cards with your phone.

24 2 General information Y our phone provides v arious functions which are very handy for daily use and for entertainment, such as Camera , MP3 Player , Messaging , Calculator , and Calendar . This chapter provides some gener al information to he lp you use the applications.
General information 25 A Shows the signal strength of the cellular network at your current location. The more bars, the s tronger the signal. The symbol is replaced with the GPRS symbol [ ] when the GPRS connec tion has been set to When available and a connection is available on the network or on the curr ent cell.
General information 26 Indicators related to actions One or more of the following icons may be shown when the phone is in Standby mode: Indicator Me anin g Indicates that you have received new text or multimedia messages.
General information 27 Indicates that all calls to your phone are being diverted. indicates that all calls to the phone are being diverted to a voice mailbox . General information 28 Extend view Y ou will see the Extend view when you press in Standby mode. On the Extend view, y ou can see important information for the day , at a glance. Y ou can also quickly switch to applications you have recently accessed.

General information 32 Actions com mon to all applications Adding items When you are in an application, select Options and then an option for creating a new item, such as New contact , Create message , New entry , or New note . Options for creating an item are different in each application.
General information 33 Marking an item There are several w ays to select items on a list: • T o select one item at a time, scroll to it and select Options → Mark/Unmark → Mark . A check mark is placed next to the item. • T o select all of the items on the list, select Options → Mark/Unmark → Mark all .
General information 34 • If you opt to send the item in an e-mail, the E-mail screen opens. Enter the e-mail address of the recipient in the To : field. Enter the message subject and add text, picture(s), video file (s), or sound(s), and then select Options → Send .
General information 35 Searchin g f or ite ms Y ou can search for a name, file, folder , or shortcut by using the search field. T o search for a file and folder in File mana ger , you need to activate the search field by selecting Options → Find . 1.
General information 36 Keypad lock (Keyguard) Y ou can open your phone to use the number keypad and close the phone to mak e it more compact. When you close the phone, it allows you to lock the exposed function keys to keep an y accidental key presses from causing problems.
General information 37 Entering text Y ou can enter text in two different wa ys: using the method traditionally used in mobile phones - pre ssing a key repeatedly until the desired character displays - or Dictionary , which is a predictive text input mode.
General information 38 Using trad iti onal text inp u t Use the keys to to enter text. 1. Press a number key repeatedly until the desired character appears. Note that there are more characters av ailable for a number key than are printed on the key . 2.
General information 39 Using Dic t io nar y 1. Write the desired word by pressing the keys to . Press each key only once for one letter . The word changes after every key press. Note : Do not pay attentio n to what appears on the display . The word match is evolving.
General information 40 • If the ? character is shown after word, the word you intended to enter is not in Dictionary . T o add a word to Dictionary , press the Spell soft key , enter the word (max. 32 letters) using traditional text input, and press the OK soft key .
General information 41 • T o view matching w ords the diction ary has f ound, one by one, press repeatedly when a word is active (underlined). Y ou can also press , select Dictionary and sele ct: • Matches to view a list of words that correspond to your key presses, which is available only if the word is active (underlined).
General information 42 Copying text If you want to copy text to the clipboard, the following are the easiest methods: 1. T o select letters and words, press and hold . At the same time, push left or right. As the selection moves, text is highlighted. T o select lines of text, press and hold .
43 3 Call functions This chapter gives you information for using y our phone’ s call functions. Making a call 1. In Standby mode, use the keypad to enter an area code and phone number . Push left or right to move the cursor . Press to remove a nu mber .
Call functions 44 Accessing dialing options After entering a number , press the Options soft key . Y ou can access the following options: • Add to Contacts : adds the number to the Contacts directory . Select Create ne w to create a new contact or Update existing to add information to an existing contact.
Call functions 45 Making a call using name dialling Y ou can make a phone call by sa y ing the name that has been assigned to a contact card in the Contacts directory . For details, see “Name dialling” on page 165. Note : T o use the Name Dial feature, the name and number that yo u w ant to dial must b e in y our Contacts directory .
Call functions 46 Speed dialling a phone number Once you hav e stored a number in Contacts , you can assign the most frequently-used numbers to the speed dialling keys to and quickly and easily dial them with only one keypress. Se e “ Assigning speed dialling keys” on page 60.
Call functions 47 1. Enter the phone number you w ant to dial, such as a bank’ s teleservice number . 2. Press repeatedly to insert a pause. Y ou can insert two types of pauses: • p : inserts a pause of approximately two seconds between numbers. The numbers following “ p” are sent automatically .
Call functions 48 Answering a call 1. T o answer an incoming call, open the phone if necessary , and press or select Options → Answer . • T o reject a call, press .
Call functions 49 Using optio ns during a call While a call is in progress, you can access the following options by pressing the Options soft key . Note : Depending on the status of your call, for example, having a second call or a call on hold, available options var y .
Call functions 50 - Drop participant : (shown when you have a c o n f e r e n c e c a l l ) a l l o w s y o u t o d r o p a p e r s o n d u r i n g a conference call. When the list of call participants appears, select one and press the Drop soft k ey .
Call functions 51 Missed calls and received calls These network services allow you to view the 20 most recent calls you have missed and calls you hav e accepted. T o view the 20 most recent missed calls’ originating phone numbers, select Log → Recent calls → Missed calls .
Call functions 52 Call duration Press to open the Menu , and then select Log → Call duration to view the duration of the last call, dialled and received calls, and total calls. Note : The a ctual t ime in voiced for call s by your s ervice provider may v ary , depending upon network features, rounding-off for billing, and so forth.
Call functions 53 Viewing the general log In the general log, for each communication event, you can see the sender or recipient’s n ame or phone number . Press to open the Menu , select Log and push right. Note : Sub-events, such as a t ext message sent in more t han one part and packet data connections, are logged as one communication event.
Call functions 54 Erasing the contents of the log T o erase all the log contents permanently , select Options → Clear log . Log settings Select Options → Settings . The list of settings opens. • Log duration : The log events remain in the phone’s memory for a set number of days, after which they are automatically erased to free up memory .
55 4 Contacts In Contacts , you can store and manage a person’ s contact information, such as a name, phone numbers, and addresses, as a contact card. To o p e n Contacts , press to open the Menu, and then select Contacts . Y ou can also press the Contacts soft k ey or in Standby mode.
Contacts 56 Creating a contact card on the SIM card 1. Open Contacts and select Options → SIM directory . 2. On the SIM directory screen, select Options → New SIM contact . 3. Enter a name and a phone number in each field. 4. Press the Done soft ke y .
Contacts 57 Copying contacts • T o copy contacts from the SIM card to your phone’ s memory , go to Contacts and select Option s → SIM directory .
Contacts 58 Changing contact information 1. On the Contacts list, select the contact card you want to edit. 2. T o change the information on the contact card, select Options → Edit . 3. T o save your changes and to r eturn to the Contacts list, press the Done soft key .
Contacts 59 Adding a picture to a contact card Y ou can add a caller ID image to a contact card as a thumbnail image. See “Camera” on page 66 for more information on how to take and store pictures. 1. Open a contact card and select Options → Edit .
Contacts 60 Assigning speed dialli ng keys Speed dialling is a quick way to call frequently -used numbers. Y ou can assign eight phone numbers speed dialling keys to . Number 1 is reserved for the voice mailbox. 1. Open the contact card. 2. Scroll to the phone number you want and select Options → Assign speed dial .
Contacts 61 2. Select Options → Rin ging tone . A list of ringtones opens. 3. Select the ringtone you wish to use for the contact or group. T o remove the ringtone, select De fault tone from the list of ringtones. Note : For an i ndividual contact, the phone always uses the ringtone that was assigned last.
Contacts 62 Subscribed contacts Y ou can create a list for contacts whose presence status y o u w a n t t o b e a w a r e o f ( n e t work service). Y ou can view the contact’s presence information if they allow you to view it and if it is not prevented by the network.

66 5 Entertainment This chapter provides you with information about applications in which you can enjoy the use of multimedia files, such as Camera , MP3 Player , RealPlayer , Gallery , ImageCook , Game , and Music Maker . Camera Using Camera , you can take pictures of people or events while on the move.
Enterta inment 67 To take a picture with the phone open: 1. In Standby mode , press and hold on the right side of the phone. Y ou can also press to open the Menu and select Camera . The Camera application opens and the view to be captured on the Image screen displays.
Entertainment 68 3. When the image you want to capture appears on the screen, press , or select Options → Capture . Do not move the pho ne before the camera starts to save the picture. The picture is saved to either the phone’ s memory or the memory card, depending on the setting of Memory in u s e .

Entertainment 70 Using Night mode When the lighting is dim and the ca mera needs a longer exposure time for th e picture to be of g ood quality , you can use Night mode. T o activate Nigh t mode, select Options → Activate nigh t mode . T o deactivate Night mode, select Options → Deact.
Enterta inment 71 • Settings : Change the other settings for taking a picture. Image quality - Select an image quality . The better the image quality , the more memory the image consumes. Image resolution - Select an image siz e. The image size is dictated by the resolution.
Entertainment 72 Sensitivity - Change the ISO setting, which controls the sensitivity of your camer a. For low light situations, lower the number to increase the quality . The higher the number , the faster the camera shutter functions and the more sensitiv e the camera is to light.
Enterta inment 73 • : Select the memory where the picture is saved to. • : Adjust the brightness. • : Select the white balance mode. 2. T o start recording, press , or select Opti ons → Record . The timer on the top right of the screen shows you the elapsed time.
Entertainment 74 Activating Night mode When the lighting is dim and the camera needs a longer exposure time for the video to be of good quality , activate Nigh t mode. Select Options → Activate night mode . T o deactivate Night m ode, select Options → Deact.
Enterta inment 75 • Settings : Change the other settings for recording a video clip. Length : Select the recording time limit. If you select Short , the phone records a video of up to 100KB or 300 KB, which is the limit for sending an MMS message. If you select Maximum , the phone records a video to the limit of the memory remaining.
Entertainment 76 Playing MP3 files 1. Press to open the Menu and then select MP3 Play... The MP3 Player screen opens. 2. Press to play the first MP3 file stored in the play list. 3. While playing music files: • T o adjust the volume, press , or push up or down.

108 6 Message services Y our phone provides you with various message service applications: •M e s s a g i n g •V o i c e m a i l •C h a t Messaging In Messaging , you can create, send, receive, view, edit, and organise: • text messages, • multimedia me ssages, • e-mails, and • smart messages: special text messages containing data.
Message ser vices 109 Message folders When y ou open Messaging , the New message function and a list of the following default message folders appears: Inbox - contains received messages except for e- mail and cell broadcast messages. E-mail messages are stored in the Mailbox .
Message services 110 Reports - Y ou can request the network to send you a delivery report of the text messages and multimedia messages you have sent. T o turn on Report reception, select Options → Settings → Text mes sage or Multimedia message , scroll to Receive report , and select Yes .
Message ser vices 111 Open in g a received m essage • When you receive a message, and the note “1 new message” are shown in Standby mode. Press the Show soft key to open the message. Press the Exit soft key to close the note. • If you hav e more than one new message, press the Show soft key to open Inbox to see the message headings.
