Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to star t using your SCH-U450 phone by activating your service, setting up your Voicemail, or getting an understanding of how this manual is put together .
5 1. Insert the top end of the battery first, matching the gold contacts on th e inside of the batter y to those on the phone. 2. Press lightly on the bottom end of the batter y down into the phone until it slips into place. 3. Position the battery cover onto the phone (1) and press lightly downward (2) on the cover until it clicks into place.
Getting Started 6 2. Insert the smaller end of the T ravel Adapter into the charger/ accessor y connector on the lower left sid e of your phone. Warning !: Y our touch screen responds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger or a non-metallic stylus.
7 Note: If you are outside of your carrier’ s coverage or roaming area, the No Service icon ( ) appears at the top of the phone’s display . 9 Section 2: Understanding Y our Phone This section outlines some key features of your phone. It also describes the screen format and th e icons that will be di splayed when the phone is in use. F eatures of Y our Phone • Domestic and international v oice and text messaging service (available on participating networks).
Understanding Y our Phone 10 3. Left Soft Key — Used to navigate through menus and applications and to select th e choice i ndicated at t he bottom left corner of the Main LCD. 4. Send Key — Lets you plac e or receive a call. In Stand by mode, press the key once to access the recent call log.
11 Open View (Front) of Y our Phone Features 1. Earpiece / Speaker — Lets you hear ringing and alert tones, alarm tones, and th e other parties to ca lls. 2. Display — Indicates the status of your phone , including numbers dialed, feature and function scre ens, status icons, message indi cators, signal stre ngth, and so on.

13 • In a menu, press the OK key ( or ) to accept the highligh ted selection. • In camera mode, press the OK key ( or ) to take a photo or to create a Picture message. • When the OK key function is Edit, press the Edit (OK) key ( or ) to edit a Draft message.

The top line of your phone’ s display contains icons that indic ate network status, battery power , signa l strength, connection type, and more. 2. The center portion of the display shows information such as call progress information, messages, and photos.
15 • Error – Example: “System Error!” • War n i ng – Example: “Low Battery ,” “Me mory Full!” Backlights Backlights illuminate the display and the keypad. When you press any key or open the phone, t he ba cklights come on. They go off when no keys are pressed within a period of time set in the Backlight menu.

17 Adjust the Master V olume 1. In Standby mode, press the V olume key ( ) on the right side of the phone up or down. Options are: 2. When you are satisf ied with the setting, press the key . Y our phone returns to Standby mode. Tip: Y ou can also access the Master Volume screen by pressing the Menu key ( ), then pressing the , , and keys.
Call Functions 18 Section 3: Call Functions This section explains how to make or answer a call. This section also inc ludes the features and funct ionality associated with making or answering a call . Making a Call — Number Entr y Dialing 1. With the phone on, enter the nu mber you wish to call using the keypad.
19 T o manually call a number with pause(s) without storing it to your Contacts: 1. Enter the number yo u wish to call. 2. Press Options . A pop-up menu containing the f ollowing options appears in the display: • P Pause — a hard pause (awai ts input from yo u).
Call Functions 20 Pause Dialing From a Contacts Entr y • If you speed dial a contact that contains fo ur-second (T) p ause(s) simply wait for the pauses to pass a nd the dialing to complete.
21 2. Say , “ Call ”. Y ou are prompt ed to “ Say the name or # ”. 3. Speak clearly and say the name of a person in yo ur Contacts list, fi rst name followed by last name. If the name is recognized, Voice Dial repe ats the name and dials the num ber .
Call Functions 22 Pause Dialing From a Contacts Entr y • If you voice dial a contact that contains (ha rd waits) P Pause(s), wait for the appropriate prompt(s) from the number you are calling (credit card number , bank account number , and so on) and enter the appropriate response(s).
23 Do one of th e following: • Use the Navig ation ke y to highl ight a menu or featu re. Press th e key to open the h ighlighted menu or to activate the highlighted feature. • Press the key to exit th e menu. Tip: Y ou can block sound going to the other party(ies) on this call by pressing Mute / Unmute .
Call Functions 24 Note: In Standby mode, you can quickly view your most recent calls of all types by briefly pressing . A list containing up to 270 of your most recent outgoing, incoming, and missed calls appears in the display. 1. In Standby mode, press Menu , then select Calls ➔ Outgoing Calls .

27 Call Timer . The following options appe ar in the display: • Last Call — View the durati on of your l ast call. • Outgoing Calls — View the du ration of the total outgoing ca lls made on your phone s ince the last er asure.

29 Section 4: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the men u navi gation for your phone. It also includes an outline of all the a vailable menus associa ted with your phone. Note: Although all procedures in this section are written for the phone keypad, you can also perform these procedures using the QWERTY keypad.
Menu Navigation 30 Tip: In Standby mode and with the QWERTY keypad open, the Navigation key’ s shortcut pattern rotates 90 ° to match the orientation of the phone. QWERTY Keypad Shortcuts Note: The QWERTY keypad shortcuts are not available when Quick Search is enabled.
31 Section 5: Understanding Y our Contacts This section explains how to ma nage your daily contacts by storing their name and number in your Contacts. C ontacts entries can be sorted by name.

(For more information, refer to “Renaming a Contacts Group” on page 40.) 6. If desired, se lect a unique Ringtone and/or MsgRingtone to identify this new Contact .
33 Adding the nu mber to an existing Contacts entr y : 5. Use the navigation keys to highlight Update Existing , then press . The Update Existing screen appears in the display showing your cu rrent Contacts list. 6. Enter the first few characters o f the Contacts entr y name under which you will store the saved number .
Understanding Y our Contacts 34 For more information on saving the number , see “Saving a Number from a Call” on page 32. Finding a Contacts Entr y V oice Method Use the VoiceSignal Contacts command to view contact information for any named contact st ored in your Contacts list by saying the name.
35 Example: If you saved a contact name as “Amy Smith”, begin your search for that contact by pressing for “A”. Note: As you enter letters, the entry names of the closest matches (thus far) appear in the display . 3. For more information, refer to “After Y ou Find the Desired Contact” on page 36.
Understanding Y our Contacts 36 After Y ou Find the Desired Co ntact 5. When the desired Contacts entr y is listed in the display , highlight the c ontact using the navig ation keys (if necessary), t hen do one of the follo wing: • T o dial the number associa ted with t he named Cont act, press .
37 • T Pause — A four -second pause stops the calling sequence for four seconds and then automatically sends the remaining digits. Tip: Y ou can enter multiple four -second pauses to extend the length of a pause. For example, two consecutive four -second pauses cause a total pause time of eight seconds.
Understanding Y our Contacts 38 Assig ning Speed Dial Nu mbers When you add or e dit an entry to the Contacts list, you have the option of assigning a Speed D ial number using the Options pop- up menu or of returning to th e Contacts menu and using th e Speed Dial op tion.
39 10. Select Set as/Remove Speed Dial . The Speed Dials screen appears in the display . (If a speed dial num ber has been set previously , you can remove it by pressing . If none has been set, continue with the next step.) 11. Select an unassig ned Speed Dial number to assign it to the selected Contact.

41 2. Press Option s , then select Send Nam e Card Via B luetooth . The Send Via Bluetooth screen appears in the display with the highlighted C ontacts entry marked. 3. Highlight another Contacts entry you wish to send and press MARK ( ) to mark the entr y for sending.
Entering T ext 42 Section 6: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using th e phone keypad or the nested, QWERTY ke yboard-style keypad. Th is section also describes how to use the T9 pr edictive text en try system to reduce the numb er of key strokes ne ed ed to enter text.
43 Tip : Using the QWERTY keypa d, also use 123 mode to enter symbols into your message simpl y by pressing the keys labeled with th e symbols you wan t. • Symbols — Using the phone keypad, ente r a symbol into your message by pressing the number above the symbol in the SYMBOLS pop-up window.
Entering T ext 44 Using Abc Mode 1. While composing a text me ssage, press the Left sof t key , then select Abc . 2. Enter characters while in Abc mode by using on e of following keypads : • Using the QWERTY key pad, pres s the key l abeled wit h the desi red character (suc h as, press for “G” and for “H”).
45 Section 7: Messaging This section explains how to cr eate, send, receive, and view different types of messages. Th is section also des cribes the features and functionality associated with messaging. Creating and Sending New Messages This section guides you through procedures for creating and sending text, picture, and postcards.
Messaging 46 Creating and Send ing a Picture Message 1. In Standby mode, press Message , then select Create Message ➔ Picture Mess age . The Create Pic Msg screen appears in the displa y showing the To list. Tip: Y ou can also access Messages by pressing Menu ( ) and select Messages .
47 • Select your new sound file. The Create Pic Msg screen re appears in the display with your se lected sound file in the Sound field. 12. Once you’re finished composi ng your picture mes sage, do one of the follo wing: • Press SEND () to send the message.

Messaging 50 • If Auto View and A uto Scroll are both set to On — The message text automatically appears in the display an d scrolls slowly to the end of the message. (For more information, refer to “T ext Message Settings” on page 55.) • A New Message notification appears in the display along with the closed envelope icon ( ).
51 – Reply With Copy — T ext Message only — Lets you reply to a message and include a copy o f the original message. – Forward — Lets you forward the message to other Email addresses or mobile phone nu mbers. – Lock / Unlo ck — Blocks or allows erasur e of the selected message.
Messaging 52 Tip: Verify whether and when a message or Email was successfully received by enabling the Delivery Ack message send option. (For more information, refer to “Send Picture Messages in Camera Mode” on page 47.) 1. In Standby mode, press Message , then select Outbox .

Alltel Shop 56 Section 8: Alltel Shop This section explains th e Alltel S hop features where users can download multimedia , applicatio ns, games, and check news and sports. Finding Applications With Alltel Shop, you can do wnload full fea tured applica tions over the air including games , personalized ring tones, pictures, and more.
57 Section 9: Alltel W eb This section outlines how to launch Alltel Web, how to navigate to other pages on the web, and ho w the keys on the keypad ar e used with the web application.

59 Section 10: Camera Use your U450 phone to take full color digital p i ctures, display them on your phone ’ s vivid color display , and instantly share them with family and friends. It’ s fun, and as easy to use as a traditional point-a nd-click camera.
Camera 60 Cam era Scre en Sof t K eys The soft key labe ls on the bottom line of the display change to the following: • Gallery — Pressing the Left soft k ey opens the My Images multimedia folder so you c an view or manage your stored pictures.
61 Re s o l u t i o n Resolution lets you ch ange the clarity (in pixels) and size (in bytes) of your pictures. 1. In camera mode, press , then highlight the Resolu tion setting. The fo llowing values appear in the came ra screen: • 1280 X 960 (pixels) • 640 X 480 (pixels) • 320 X 240 (pixels) • 176 X 144 (pixels) 2.
Camera 62 1. In camera mode, press Options , then highlight the current Quality indica tor ( SF , F , N ). The following values a ppear in the camera screen: SuperFine , Fine , and Normal . 2. Select the des ired Quality value. Whit e Bal anc e White Balanc e allows you to adj ust picture qualit y according to available l ight.
63 Settings When you change Camera Setti ngs values, your changes are saved for future camera sessio ns, un like changes to Camera Options. T o restore Ca mera Se ttings to their defaul t values, select Reset Settings . (For more information, refer to “Reset Settings” on page 64.
Camera 64 2. Select the viewf inder screen se tting of your choice. Y ou’re returned to the came ra viewfinder screen. Shutter Sound Choose from four different sounds whenever you take a picture. Aside from being a cool sound e ffect, Shutter Sounds acts as an audible reminder that your camera has take n a picture.

71 • Rename — Lets you rename the selected file. • Ringtone Info — Displays information abo ut the selected fi le, such as the file name, t he file type, and the data size. • Send Via Bluetooth — Lets you send ringto nes via Blue tooth. 6.
Multimedia 72 – Lock / Unlock — Lets you protect the sound file from being deleted. – Erase All — Erases all sound files. – Sound Info — Displays information about the sound file, such as the Title, File T ype, and the Data Size. 4. Select the des ired option.

75 Section 13: T ools This section explains how to use your phone’ s digital assistant functions to view today’ s ca lendar , schedule events, set reminders, perform calc ulations, and more.
