When you pr ess any key or open the phone, the backlights come on. They go off whe n no keys are pr essed within a pe riod of time set in the Backlight menu.

30 Section 2 Lock Mode When the phone is in Lock Mode, r es tric tions ar e placed on phone use. Y ou can re ceive calls and messages, but cannot place outgoing calls (except for emergency numbers) until you unlock the phone. Lock Mode also r estricts access to menus and the volume key .

34 Section 3 Making a Call — Number Entr y Dialing 1. With the p hone on, enter the number yo u wish to call using the ke ypad. 2. Press the key to place th e call. Dialing Emergency Numbers Y ou can dial any of the numbers 91 1, *91 1, or #91 1 to place an emer gency call.

36 Section 3 Manual Pause Calling When you call autom ated system s (like banking services), you are often r equired to enter a passwor d or account number . Instead of manually entering the numbers each time, you can s tore the numbers in your Contacts along with special characters called pauses.

Speed Diali ng lets yo u quickly and easily dial any co ntact in your Contacts list by using that contact’s locati on number in the list.

Section 3: Call Functions 47 Calls Log Section 3 䢇 To t a l — View the duration of the total call, incoming and outgoing, made on your phone since the last erasure. 䢇 LifeTime — View the duration of all ca lls on your phone since activation (LifeT ime timers cannot be erased).
48 Section 3 Phone Modes Standby Mode Standby mode is the state of you r phone once it is powered on and has found a wireless service. Y o ur phone goe s into standby mode: • After you power the phone on. • When you press the key after a call or fr om within a menu or phone function screen.

Lock Mode When you lock your phone using the Lock Mode menu option (see “Lock Phone” on page 172 for mor e information), the following r estrictions ar e plac ed on use of your phone: • Y ou can receive messages and calls.

52 Section 3 T9 W ord T ext Entry Mode T9 W o rd recognizes a commonly used word that is repr esented by a sequence of number key presses and inserts that wor d into your message. ( For example, entering ‘8378’ would insert ‘test’ into your message.

The following roaming optio n s ar e available: • Home only — Y our phone is available for normal operation onl y in the designated coverage area.

68 Section 5 T ext Entry Modes Y ou can compose text messages using alphabetical characters, symbols, and n umbers. Each method of character entry (symbol, nu mber , and so on) is c alled a text entr y mode. There ar e four text entry modes, as indicated: • Alpha — Alphabetical text entry mode.

74 Section 6 Y our Contacts List Y our Contacts list can store up to 500 numbers, with each contact having up to five asso ci ated phone numbers, an e-mail address, and a picture ID. Each phone number can be up to 32 digits in length, including har d pauses.
