Getting Started 5 T ext Conv entions This manual provides cond ensed information about ho w to use your phone. T o make this possible, the follo wing text conve ntions are used to represen t often-used steps: Activating your Phone If you purchased your phone at a Verizon Wireless store, it is activated and ready to use.
6 Batter y Y our phone is powered by a re chargeable, standard Li-I on battery . A USB cable and Chargin g Head are included with the phone, for charging the battery . Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your phone for the first time.
Getting Started 7 Inst alli ng the Batter y 1. Remove the battery cover . For more information, see “Removing the ba ttery co ver” on page 6. 2. Insert the top end of the batt ery into the phone housing, aligning the gold co ntacts on the ba ttery wi th the gold contacts in the pho ne.
8 Charging the Batter y Y our phone comes with a USB cabl e and charging head to rapidly charge your phone from any 120/220 V AC outlet. Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your phone for the first time.
Getting Started 9 Non-Supported Batteries Samsung handsets do not support the use of non-approved batteries. Import ant!: Using a non-supported battery may damage to your phone. When using a non-supported battery you will hear a series of beeps and see a warning message: “ NON-SUPPORTED BATTER Y .
10 Set-up W izard Set preferences for four basic categories, to start using your phone quickly . 1. From the Home screen, press the Center Select Key to select MENU ➔ Settings & T ools ➔ Set-up Wizard . 2. Follow the prompts to set pr eferences for these settings: • Call Sounds : Choose how your pho ne alert s you to i ncoming cal ls.
Getting Started 11 Locking and Unloc king Y our phone offers two lock f unctions, locking the phone, or locking th e keypad. Note: Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this User Manual start with the phone unlocked, at the Home screen.
12 Locking an d unl ocking the keypad By default, the external keypad locks a utomaticall y when the backlight goes out, or you ca n lock it manually . Note: Use Keyguard Settings to customize keypad locking. For more information, see “Keyguard Setting” on page 115.
Getting Started 13 V oicemail All unanswere d calls to your phone are sent to voicemail, even if your phone is turned off, so you’ ll want to set up your voicemail and personal greeting as soon as you activate your phone. Setti ng up Voicemail 1. Press and hold .
14 Re mov i n g a M em o r y C a r d 1. Pull the memory card cover ou t and turn it to expose t he memory ca rd in the card slot. 2. Press on the memor y card to release t he lock, then remove the card. For m att in g Formatting erases all content from th e memory card and prepares it for use with your phone.

Making a Call Y our phone offers multip le ways to make calls: • Enter the phone or speed dial number on the keypad, then p ress Send .

Entering T ext 59 Section 5: Entering T ext Y our phone provides convenient ways to enter words, letters, punctuation, and numbers when you need to enter text. This section describes text input modes and entering characters or symbols, using the built-in QW ER TY keyboard or the keypad.
60 Entering Symbol s Enter symbols by pressing the Func tion key to access the orange symbols at th e top of the k eys. Entering Smileys Enter Smileys by pressing the Function key , then the Smileys key .
Entering T ext 61 Entering T ext using T9 W ord T9 Word is a predictive text en tr y mode that re cognizes common words matching the sequence of your key presses and inserts the most common word i nto your te xt. T9 Word requires only one key press per letter of the wo rd, and is much faster than traditional te xt entry .
62 Enteri ng T e xt usi ng Abc Mo de Abc mode is standard text entry mode for mobile telephones, and is the defaul t text entry mode when u sing the ext ernal keypad.

Messaging 65 Creating and Sending T ext Messages T ext Messages are simple messag es containing text, which can be send to another mobi le phone or to an Email address. Y our phone also supports Enhanced T ext Messages, which can contain specific types of pre- loaded attachments such as sounds, graphics, animat ions, and name cards.
