Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start usin g your Samsung SCH-r860 phone by activating your service, setting up your voicemail, and getting an understanding of how this manual is pu t together .
5 Use the T ra v el Adapter The travel adapter included with your phone is a convenient, light-weight charger that rapidly charges your phone from any 120/220 V AC outlet. 1. Plug the large e nd of the T ravel Adapter into a standard 120 V AC or 220 V AC wall outlet.
Getting Started 6 Install the Batter y Note: Y our phone comes packaged with a partially charged rechargeable standard Li-Ion battery and tra vel adapter . Import ant!: Y ou must fully charge the battery the first time you use your phone, otherwise you could damage the battery.
7 Note: As with any other radio-transmitting device, do not touch the antenna (at the bottom of the device) while using your phone as this can affect call quality and can cause the phone to operate at a higher power level than is necessary. 2. The phone begins searching for a network signal.
Getting Started 8 Install a Memory Car d 1. Open the microS D cover on the rig ht hand side of t he phone, as shown. 2. Make sure that the go ld contacts of the card are face down, as shown, then carefully slide the me mory card i nto the memory card slot u ntil you fe el it cl ick into pl ace.
9 Section 2: Understanding Y our Phone This section outlines some key fe atures of your phone. It also describes the screen format and th e icons that will be displayed when the phone is in use.

13 Understanding the D isplay Screen 1. The top line of your phone’ s display contains icons that indicate network status, battery power , signal strength, connection type, and more. 2. T apping the left side o f the display opens the Widget Bar that lists available shortcut widgets.

Camcor der Mo de Camcorder mode lets you record videos with your phone’ s camera. In Camcorder mode, you ca n also adjust the resolution and appearance of your videos.

19 Section 3: Call Functions This section explains ho w to make or answer a call. This section also inc ludes the feature s and function ality associ ated with making or ans wering a call. Making a Call — Number Entr y Dialing 1. In Standby mo de, press the Dialer soft key .
Call Functions 20 Manu al Pau se Calling When you call aut omated systems ( like banking ser vices), you are often requir ed to enter a password or ac count number . Instead of manu ally entering th e numbers each time, you can store the numbers in your Contacts along with special characters called pauses.
21 4. T o select a number other than the marked Co ntacts entry’ s default number , select the Contacts entry . The entry’ s information appears in the display . • Select th e radio but ton for the number you wish to dial. 5. Press the Add soft key .
Call Functions 22 Fa v orites Screen Dialing Y ou can also dial Contacts entries with assigned Speed Dial numbers from the Fav o r it e s screen. 1. In Standby mo de, press the Dialer soft key . The touch keypad screen appears in the display . 2. Press the F avorites butto n ( ).
23 If Voice Dial is not sure which name you said, it prompts you with “ Call? ” followed a c hoice list of up to three names. 4. Do one of the following: • Press one of the name button s. • Say “ Ye s ” to confi rm the fi rst nam e. • Say “ No ” to hear the next nam e.

Call Functions 30 Call Timer View the duration of your last c all, total calls, and calls made during the life cyc le of you phon e using the Call Timer feature. Note: Call Timer is not for billing purposes. 1. In Standby mo de, press Menu ➔ Calls .
31 3. Press the Reset soft key to reset all counters except Lifetime Data Co unter . Note: Although T otal da ta counters can be erased, the Lifetime Data Counter can never be erased. Roaming What is R oaming ? Roaming lets you use yo ur phone when you travel outside of your Wireless Provider’ s coverage area.
Menu Navigation 32 Section 4: Menu Na vigation This section explains the menu navi gation for your phone. It also describes the me nus available with your phone.
33 3. Scroll through the Widget list by pressing and sliding up or down within the Widget Bar until a desired Widget icon appears. 4. Press and slide the Widget icon to the right unt il it is free of the Widget Bar . The icon now displays on the S tandby screen and ex pands in size.
Menu Navigation 34 Soft K eys The following soft keys ar e available during a call : • Dialer — Opens the Dia ler screen to enable you to plac e another call while the current call remains activ e. • Contacts — Opens the Co ntacts list screen.

49 Section 6: Entering T e xt This section details how to select the type of text entry screen (phone-style touch ke ypad, QWER TY touch keypad, or divided or full-screen handwriting recogniti on p anel).
Entering T ext 50 The following options ap pear in the display: • 3X4 Keypad — Displays the phone -style touch keypad. •Q W E R T Y — Displays the keyboard -style touch keypad, in landscape mod e. • Handwriting box — Displays the divided tex t entry screen with the handwritte n text entry field at th e bottom.
51 1. From the Phone T ouc h Keypad screen or from the full- screen Handwriting Recognition screen, press the down arrow button ( ) (at the upper right corner of the screen), then select Handwriting box . 2. From the QWERTY T ouch Key pad screen, press .
Entering T ext 52 Note: T9 Word does not support the QWERTY keypad or Handwriting Recognition screens, which do not need this function. • T9 W ord — Press each phone key only once to enter the letter o f the word that you’re spelling.
53 Changing Ha ndwriting R ecognition Screen T ext Entr y Mode 䊳 While composing a text messa ge or memo, to change text entry m ode: • To s e l e c t Abc mode, press .
Entering T ext 54 – Pause briefly and the d isplayed letter is accepted and inserted into your message. – Press to enter a space and press to enter a period. • Using the QWERTY key pad, pres s the key l abeled wit h the desi red letter (such as, press for “G” and for “H”).
55 Section 7: Messaging This section explains how to cr eate, send, receive, and view different types of messages. Th is section also des cribes the features and functionality associated with messaging. Creating and Sending New Messages This section guides you through procedures for creating and sending text, picture, and postcards.
Messaging 56 – If desired, press the do wn arrow button in th e upper right corner of the screen, then select All , Incomi ng , Outgoing , Missed , or Data calls. – Select individual ca lls or select Select All . Check marks appear in the check boxes for the select ed calls.

Messaging 58 • T o make changes to your message, press the Back soft key . Send Picture Messages in Camera Mode Picture messages can be sent fr om your phon e’ s came ra to recipients with compatible phon es or devices. Y ou can even accompany a picture wi th a voice memo or preloaded sound fi le.
59 2. Address your message as you would a T ext message (see “Creating and Sending a T ext Message” on page 55). 3. If desired, select the Subject field. The 3X4 Key pad screen appears in mixed-case mode. Note: Y ou can use any of the r860’ s four text entry screens to enter your message text.
Messaging 60 3. Press the Recording Mode soft key . Select the Vi de o M s g option. Note: For more information about setting camcorder options in your phone, see “Camcorder Options” on page 83. 4. Using the disp lay as a viewfin der , when the image that you wish to send appears in the di splay , press the Camera key ( ) to record a video.
61 Receiving N ew Messages When you receive a messag e in Standby mode, one of the following occurs: • If Auto V iew and Auto Scrol l are both set to On — An alert sounds (unless turned off) and the message text automatically appears in the display and scrolls slowly to the e nd of the message.
Messaging 62 2. Y ou ha ve the follo wing available opti ons: • T o reply to the latest inco ming text message, press the Reply soft key , an d select Te x t M e s s a g e . Note: Only text messages appear in the Chat Wi th screen. • T o view detail s about the last message in the Chat With screen, press the Vi ew L a st M s g.
63 Chec king yo ur V oice mail 1. In Standby mode, press the Dialer soft key , then press and hold until you’re conn ected to your Wireless Provider’ s voicemail system.
Messaging 64 Tip: Verify whether and when a message or e-mail was successfully received by enabling the Delivery Ack message send option. (For more information, refer to “Send Picture Messages in Camera Mode” on page 58.) 1. In Standby mo de, press the Messages soft key , then select Outbox .
65 – Save Quick T ext — Saves the m essage text as a Quick T ext entry . – Message Info — Lets you display st atus information about a message. Select an op tion to perform the function for that o ption. V oicemail New voice messa ges in your vo ice mail box are logged in the Voicemail folder of the Messa ges menu.
Messaging 66 • Auto Save/Auto Erase — Lets you set r860 messaging to: – Automatically save unsent m essages to the Ou tbox folder , to discard them, or to prompt you to elect to save/disca rd unsent messages. – Automatically erase/or prompt you to delete the oldes t read messages after message memory is full and new message s are received.
67 mail@metro Y ou can use your r860 to access your personal or business e-mail account(s). 1. In Standby mode, press Menu ➔ mail@met ro . If mail@metro is not present on your phone, the @metro Mobile Shop catalo g screen appears in the display , as shown.
@metro 68 Section 8: @metro This section explains the @metro features where users can download multimedia , applicatio ns, games, and check news and sports. Finding Applications With @metro, you can download full featured applications ov er the air including games , personalized ring tones, pictures, and more.
69 Section 9: MetroWEB This section outlines how to la unch MetroWEB, how to navigate to other pages on the web, a nd how the keys on the keypad are used with the web application.
MetroWEB 70 • Links (embedded in content). • Numbered options (some may not b e numbered). • Simple text. Y ou can act upon options or links by selecting them. Using Links Links have several pur poses, such as jumping to a different page, to a different site, or even initiating a phone call.

73 Section 11: Camera-Camcorder Use your Samsung phone to take full color digital pictures and videos, display them on your phone’ s vivid co lor display , and instantly share them with family an d friends. It’ s fun, and as easy to use as a trad itional poin t-and-c lick camera or cam corder .

75 T ak ing Vi deos T o take a video using the curre nt camcorder settings, do the following: 1. In Camera mode, press the Mode button ( ). The camcorder view finder screen appears in the display . (For more informatio n, refer to “Camcorder Screen” on page 77.
Camera-Camcorder 76 Camera Screen Icon s ISO — Indicates camera ex posure index setting. White Balance — Indicates camera’ s white balance setting. (Y ou can change the camera white balance setting. (For more information, refer to “White Balance” on page 81.
77 Camcor der Scr een When you activate your phone’ s camcorder , the first line of the display is shows current camcorde r setting icons. The center of the display shows a viewfinder im age of the subjec t at which the camcorder is pointed.
Camera-Camcorder 78 Card Mem ory — Indicates videos will be stored on a microSD Memory Card. Memory Av ailable — Indicates the percentage of memory av ailable for you to store a video. Battery Level — Number black bars indicates level of charge.
79 Note: Zoom is not available if the Size option is set to 3.0m (2048 x 1536). 䊳 In camera or camcorder view finder screen, use the Up and Down Volume k eys to adjust t he Zoom (the screen image enlarges to show the affe cts of your changes).
Camera-Camcorder 80 Note: The Size setting affects zoom capabilities. When Size is set to 3.0M (2048 x 1536), zoom is not available. When Size is set to any value lower than 3.0M (2048 x 1536), zoom settings 1 – 9 are available. Flas h Flash lets yo u take pictures in low light conditions.

When you press t he C am era key ( ), the countdown timer indicates the t ime remaining before the camera takes the picture.

Camera-Camcorder 84 • Third press — Icons and camcorder buttons re appear . Zoom Zoom lets you t emporarily enla rge the videos you t ake. Increasing the Zoo m (2 – 9) enlarges your vi deos (1 is normal).
85 Brig htness Brightness lets you temporaril y lighten the videos you take. Increasing the Brightness (-4 – +4) lightens you r videos (0 is normal). 1. In camcorder mode, pr ess . The Brightness adjustment appears in the display . 2. T o brighten your next video( s), press .
Camera-Camcorder 86 Whit e Ba la nce White Balance allo ws you to adjust video quality according to available light. 1. In camcorder mode, press ( ), then select Camcorder Ta b ➔ White Balance . The options are: •A u t o — The ca mcorder a utomatica lly adjust s color bala nce to available lig ht.
87 Camcorder Settings — Common T ab Defaul t stor a ge 1. In camcorder mode, press ( ) , then select Common T ab ➔ Default storage . The following Memo ry options appear in the display: • Phone Memory — Stores videos in phone memor y . •C a r d M e m o r y — Stores vide os on an opti onal mi croSD Memor y Card.

The Photo Galler y Saved pictures are store d in the My Images fo lder . Y ou can browse the pictures o ne at a ti me (expanded mode), or view several pictures at once in thumbnai l format.

Music Player 92 Section 12: Music Player Music Player lets you play m usic (MP3) files stored on a microSD™ Memory Card (up to 8 GB). This section describes your phone’ s Music Pl ayer functions and key features asso ciated with mult imedia.

Music Player 96 • T o view the con tents of your new Playlist, se lect it. Y our Playlist screen appears in the display showing the newly added files. • T o play the co ntents o f your new Playlist, press the Play button ( ) to the right of your Playl ist’s name.
97 Section 13: Video Player This section outlines your phone’ s Video Player functi ons and key features. Y our r860 phone includes a Video Player capable of playing 3 gs and MP4 video files. Launching the Video Player T o launch the Video Player: 1.
Video Player 98 •C o p y t o c a r d — Lets yo u save a copy of a video clip to an option al Memor y Car d. •R e n a m e — Lets you change th e name of a v ideo clip.
99 Video Player Controls (Full Screen Mode) 1. Video Screen — Shows the video being played. 2. Progress Bar — Indicates how much of the v ideo has played and shows the tota l length of the video. 3. With the Video Playe r in Full Screen Mode , the following playback control s are available: Vol um e — Shows the current volu me setting.
Multimedia 100 Section 14: Multimedia This section outlines your phone’ s multimed ia functions and key features associa ted with multimedia . Accessing Multimedia 1. In Standby mo de, press the Menu soft key , then select Main Menu 2 ➔ Multimedi a .

Multimedia 102 If there are videos stored in your phone or on an optional Memory Card, up to seven t humbnail images from your videos appear in the Vi de o s screen. 2. T o take a new video, press the More soft key and select the Camcorder option. The camcorder view finder screen appears in the display .
