Getting Started 6 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains ho w to start using your SCH-R640 phone b y activating your service, setting up your Vo icemail, or ge tting an understanding of how this manual is put together .
7 T ext Co nv entio ns This manual provides condensed in formation about how to use your phone. T o make this possible, the following terms and icon display in place of repeatedly -use d procedural steps: Charging the Batter y Y our phone is powered by a rechar geable standard Li-Ion battery .
Getting Started 8 Use th e T ravel Adapt er The travel adapter included with yo ur phone is a convenient, light- weight charger that rapidly char ges your phone from any 120/220 V AC outlet. 1. Plug the T ravel Adapter’s Charg ing Head into a standard 120 V AC or 220 V AC wall outlet.
9 3. Insert the smaller end of the T ravel Adapter into the charger/ accessory co nnector on the botto m, middle portion of your phone. Warn in g! : Y our touch screen responds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger .
Getting Started 10 Low b atter y indicator The battery indicator ( ) in the u pper -right corner of the display indicates power level. Monitor the battery stre ngth and ensure your batter y is adequa tely charge d. • Five bars ( ) indicate a full charge.
11 1. If needed, lay the phone face do wn and insert a small objec t or thumbnail into the slot a t the top of the ba ttery cov er (1) and gently pry it away from the pho ne.
Getting Started 12 3. Press lightly on the bottom end o f the battery (2) down into the phone until it sl ips into place. 4. Place the bottom end o f the batter y cover over the ba tter y (1) and press the batt ery cove r down into place (2).
13 Remo ve the Batter y 1. Press and hold to turn off the phone (if on). 2. Lay the phone face down and inse rt a small object or thumbnail into the slot at th e top of the battery cover and gently pry it away from the phone . then lift the c over away from the phone (2).

15 Note: If you are outside of your carrier’ s coverage or roaming area, the No Service icon ( ) displays at the top of the phone’ s screen. If you cannot place or receive calls, try later when service is a vailable, or at another location.
Getting Started 16 Setting Up Y our Voicema il Voicemail allo ws callers to lea ve voice messa ges, which can be retrieved any time. Note: Once your Voicemail account has been set up, you can use the Voicemail folder (under the Message menu) to view details of voice messages in your Voicemail box.

Hold the card with the label faci ng up and the gold contacts of the card facing down, as shown, then carefully slide the memory card into the memor y card slot until you feel it clic k into place.
19 Re mo v e a Memor y Car d 1. Remove the batter y cover . (For more informat ion, refer to “Remove the Batter y” on page 13.) 2. Carefully press the memory card inward until you feel it release. 3. Slowly release your pressure on th e card. The card slides out of the slot a short distance.

Displa y : Indicates the status of your phone (including numbers dialed, feature and function screens, status icons, message indicators and contents, signa l strength, and so on) and shows all touch controls (hot buttons, keypads, and menus).

23 4. Power / USB Connector : Used to connect charging accessories or any a vailable USB ca bles to your phone. 5. Microphone : Lets the other caller hear you clearly when you a re speaking to them. 6. Camera Key : Launches the Camera feat ure of your phone and takes pictures.

Open View (Front) of the Phone Open the QWERTY keypad by slidi ng the lower half of the phone to the left. 1. Earpiece : Allows you to hear other parties to calls, music, an d tones.
25 3. Fn Key : T ext Function Key — T oggle s text entry mode between Fn , Fn (locked) and abc modes. 4. Shift Key : T oggles ABC mode capitali zation between ABC , Abc , and abc . 5. Space Key : Inserts a space character in a te xt entry. 6. OK Key : When navigating through a menu accepts the highlighted choice in a menu.
Understanding Y our Phone 26 12. Pow er On -O f f / End Key : Ends a call. When you press and hold the key , the power goes On or Off. Whe n you receive an incoming call, press to se nd the call to voicemail.
27 • Messaging : Launches the Messaging screen. •M e n u : Launche s panel on e of the Main Menu . With the QWERTY keypad open, the displa y rotates automatically from portrait mode (as previously displayed) to landscape mode (right).
Understanding Y our Phone 28 Using the Widget T ray The Widget T ray contai ns Widget icons that, w hen tapped, display on one of the two Home scre en panels. 1. In Standby mode, se lect one of the two Home screen panels by swiping your finge r horizontally across the display .
29 4. T ap the desired Widget icon to copy the corresponding Widget onto the Home screen panel. Press and drag the Widget to the desired position to re-position the Widget on the Home screen panel. 5. Once on the Home screen, you can tap a Widget to launch its function.

31 Backligh ts Backlights illuminate t he display a nd the keypad. W hen you pres s any key or open the phone, the backlights turn on. The backlight turns off if there is no k ey press activit y within a defined period of time (set in the Backlight menu).

33 Entering T ext Y our phone has a QWERTY ( ) keypad to support quick and easy text input. Y ou can en ter text as you would when using a computer keyboard. The keys are l abeled with a lett er on the lower half an d a number or symbol on the upp er half.
Understanding Y our Phone 34 Y our Phone’ s Modes Call Ans wer Mode Y ou can choose to answer a call by pressing any key except the key or key , or by pressing only the key. (F or more information, refer to “Call Settings” on page 168.) Input mode Input mode determines how you enter text, numbers, and symbols.
35 Standby Mode Standby mode is the state of the pho ne once it has found service and is idle. The phone goes into Standby mode: • After you power on the phone. • When you press after a call or from within a m enu. In Standby mode, the time , day , and date as well as all phone status icons displays.

37 Enter/Exit Silent Mode Silence the tones y our keypad makes when you press a key. • T o enter Silent Mode: 䊳 In Standby mode, press the Vo lume key ( ) down until “ All Sounds Off ” briefly displays on the screen and your p hone returns to Standby mode.

39 Camera Mode Camera mode allows you to activa te your phone’ s camera to take pictures. In Camera mode, you can also adjust the resolution a nd appearance of your pi ctures. (For more in formation, refer to “Camera” on page 95.) • Entering Camera Mode : In Standby mode, press the Camera key ( ).
Call Functions 40 Section 3: Call Functions This section provides procedures for making and answering calls. This section also describe s features, such as call logs and call timers, that help you ma ke calls a nd manage your call time.

Emergenc y Calls When you call the Emergency Numb er , 911, your R640 phone locks itself in emergency mode, only all owing you to make calls to the emergency call center you originally co ntacted.

45 Note: End Calls Before relaunching the Voice Service voice recognition software — When you use Voice Commands to make a call, you must end that call before you can use other Voice Commands. (For more information, refer to “Voice Service” on page 127.
Call Functions 46 If the name is reco gnized, Voice Command s repeats the name and dials the number . If Voice Commands is not sure whic h name you said, it displays a choice list of up to three names and prompts y ou with “ Tr y again? ” followed by t he first name on the list.
47 Dialing a Number T o dial a number using Voice Co mmands, do th e following: 1. In Standby mode, tap Menu ➔ V oice Commands . “ Please say a command ” is pronounced through th e speaker . 2. Say “ Call ”. Y ou are prom pted to “ Say the name or number of the person you would like to call, or say voicemail or l ast number ”.
Call Functions 48 Pause Dialing F rom a Contacts Ent r y • If you voice dial a contact th at contains 2-Sec Paus e(s) simply wait for the pauses to pass and the dialing to co mplete.
49 Call No tifi cation Features Y our phone notifies you of a call in a variety of ways. • Eight ring volume settings: All Sounds Off , Alarm Only , Vi br a t e On l y , Low , Medium Low , Medium , Medium High , or High . • Different ring types or melodies to distinguish callers.

51 Call Bloc k Y ou can prevent your number from displaying on another phone’ s caller ID screen by enabl ing Call Block . 1. In Standby mode, tap Dialer , then tap , , . 2. Enter the number whose calls you want to block, then press . Silence an Incoming Ring During an incoming call, press the Volume key ( ) up or down to silence the ringer .
Call Functions 52 2. Bluetooth : Launches the Bluetooth sc reen, letting you switch this call’ s sounds from the phone ’s earpiece and microphone to a Bluetooth de vice.
53 4. Speakerphone : Press and slide to enable (left) / disable (right) Speakerphone mode, letting you conduct the call handsfree or to share the call with others. (F or more information, refer to “Responsible Listening” on page 205.) 5. Mute : Press and slide to Mute (lef t) / unmute (right) th e phone’ s microphone.

55 View Timers View the duration of your last call , total calls, and calls made during the life of your phone using the Ca ll timer feature . Note: Call timer is not for billing purposes.
Call Functions 56 • Lifetime Ca lls - Shows the tot al number and duration of all calls made with and received by yo ur phone since being activated. • Lifetime Data C ounter - Displa ys the Lifet ime amount of data transmitted o r received.
57 • Lock / Unlock : Blocks/permit s erasure of one or more selected cal l from your Dia led call lo g. •V i e w T i m e r s : Lists total time for the Last Call ; numbers of cal ls and total time.
Call Functions 58 Erase Logs Y ou can erase individual calls from the Missed, Receiv ed, Dialed, or All call logs by do ing the following: 1. Fro m t he Calls menu, tap Missed / Received / Dialed / All . A selected list of your call s displays on the screen.
59 View Time rs View the duration of your last call , total calls, and calls made during the life of your phone using the View Timers feature. Note: View Timers is not for billing purposes. 1. Fro m t he Calls menu, tap Vi e w Ti m er s . The following options display on the screen: • Last Call : Shows the durati on of your la st call.
Call Functions 60 • Lifetime Calls : Shows the dura tion of all calls on your phone since activation (Lif etime timers cannot be re set). • Lifetime Data C ounter : Shows the total am ount of data sent an d received by the data ser vices on your phone since activati on (Lifetime data counters cannot be reset).

Understanding Y our Contacts 62 Section 4: Understanding Y our Contacts This section details how you can ma nage your daily contacts by storing their names and numbers in your C ontacts list. Y ou can have your Contacts entries sorted by name. Conta cts Up to 1000 entries can be stored in Contacts.
63 Launch th e Conta cts Menu 䊳 In Standby mode, tap Contacts . A list of contacts displays. – or – In Standby mode, press Menu ➔ Contacts . – or – T o launch the Contacts menu using a voice command — In Standby mode, tap Menu ➔ Voice Commands .

Displays only when there are multiple number entries for a contac t. – Send Name Card Via Bluetooth : Send a copy of this Contacts entry to another Bluetooth device. – or – Ta p Edit to add or change information for this entry .

69 Add Pauses to Contacts Number s Calls to automated syst ems such as banking serv ices often require a password or account number . Inst ead of manually entering these numbers, you can store them in a Con tacts entry with the phone number and with special characters c alled paus es, up to a max imum of 32 digits.

71 Assigning a Pict ure to a Contacts Entr y When you assign a pictur e to a Contacts entry , the picture tha t you assigned to the entry di splays on the screen when yo u receive a call from that Contact . 1. Find the Contacts entry you want to edit.

73 Deleting a Contacts Entr y 1. In Standby Mode, tap Contacts ➔ . The Erase screen displays on the screen. 2. Scroll to and tap t he Contact you want to er ase. A check mark displays in the box to th e right of the Contact. – or – Ta p Mark All to mark all contacts for erasure.

Speed Dial A Contacts entry’ s Speed Dial number corresponds to th e number keys you press and hold to speed dial one of that entry’ s numbers.

79 Section 5: Messaging This section explains how to send or receive different types of messages. This section also describes the feat ures and functionality associated with messaging.

Y our new picture displays in the picture revi ew screen. Note: For more information about using the camera feature in your phone, see “Camera” on page 95.
83 Note: Y ou can record and insert a voice memo of up to 60 seconds in length, if you record first before attaching a picture. If a picture is attached before recording, the size of the voice memo is limited to the amount of remaining memory.
Messaging 84 Send Picture Messages in Standby Mode Send Picture messages to recipien ts with a compatible phone or other device, and acco mpany the Picture messa ge with a voice memo, ring tone, or downloaded melody . Tip: Y ou can send a Picture message to up to ten recipients.
85 6. Ta p Attach to add the highlighted pict ure to your message. Y ou are returned to the New PIC Msg screen with th e selected picture in t he Slide field. – or – Ta p ➔ T ake Picture to launch the camera. T ake your picture, then press Add to add your picture to your message.

91 Managing Dr aft Messages 1. In Standby mode, tap Menu ➔ Messaging ➔ Drafts . A list of draft messages that you save d displays on the screen. 2. T ap and select one of the fol lowing options: • Sort by Recipient : List messages according to reci pient name or number .
Messaging 92 Listen to V oicemail Now When you choose to review your new voicemail message(s) right away , your phone calls your voice ma ilbox so that yo u can listen to the message(s). (For more information, refer to “List en to V oicemai l” on page 17.

Camera 96 1. In Standby mode, press the Camera key ( ). The camera viewfinder screen displays. (F or more informat ion, refer to “Screen Layouts” on page 99.) Tip: Y ou can also activate the Camera by pressing Menu , then selecting Multimed ia ➔ Camera .
97 5. Do one of the follo wing: • Press Send via to send a co py of the photo in a Pi cture message to your addressee(s) or over a Bluetooth con nection. • Press Set as to assign th e photo as a H ome screen wallp aper or as a Contact ID imag e. • Press Erase to erase the photo.
