4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to start using your SCH-R270 by activating your service, setting up your Voicemail, or getting an understanding of how this manual is put together . Getting Started 5 Batter y Y our phone is powered by a re chargeable, standard Li-Ion battery . A travel char ger is in cluded with the phone, for ch arging the batter y . Note: The battery comes partially char ged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your pho ne for the first time.
6 Installing the batter y cover Align the cover and press it firmly into place, being sure it snaps into place at the corners. Installing the Batter y Note: Y our phone comes packaged with a partia lly charged rechargeable standard Li-Ion battery and travel adapter .
Getting Started 7 Re mo ving the Batter y 1. Press and hold to turn off the phone (if on). 2. Remove the battery cover . For more information, refer to “Removing the battery cover” on page 5. 3. Lift the botto m of the battery up (1) and away (2 ) from the phone.
8 4. When charging is complete, unplug the charg ing head from the power outl et and remove the USB cable fr om the phone. Important! For connection to an electrical supply not located in North America, you must use an ada ptor of the proper configuration for the power outlet.
Getting Started 9 2. Press . The display lights. Note: As with any other radio-transmitting device, do not touch the antenna while using your phone because th is may affect call quality or cause the phone to operate at a higher t han necessary power level.
10 T o li sten to Voicemail In standby mode, press and hold or dial you r own mobile number to dial Voic email. After connecting, you hear your voice greeting and are prom pted to ente r your password.

It also describes the scre en format and the icons that display when the phone is in use. Making and Answ ering a Call Making a Call With the phone on, enter the number to ca ll using the keypad and press .
22 Dialing International Num bers Call Another Countr y – Manual Method 1. In standby mode, enter 011 (the three-digit exit code for the United St ates). 2. Enter the country code. 3. Enter the number to call, th en press . Note: Puerto Rico an d Canada are on t he North Ame rican dialing plan.
Call Functions 23 Pause Dial from Contacts • If you voice dial a contac t that contains (two-second) T pause(s ) simply wait for the pauses to pas s and the dialing to complete.
24 Pause Dial ing Fr om a Cont acts Ent r y • T o speed dial a contact that contains (two-second) P pause(s) wait for the pauses and dialing to comple te. • T o speed dial a contact that contains (hard) W pause(s), wait for the prompt(s) from the number you called (credit ca rd number , bank account number , or other) then enter your digits.

26 The new message opens, with the T o: field populated with your selection(s). Conti nue creating the message. Go T o <Menu> Access a menu item by spe aking the menu’ s name. 1. In standby mode, press and hold . The audio prompt “ Please say a command ” sounds and the Voice Commands display .
Call Functions 27 Redial 1. In standby mode, press and hold . The audio prompt “ Please say a com mand ” sounds and the Voice Commands display . 2. Say “ Redial ”. The CALLING screen appears in the display showing the Contact and/or number being redialed.
28 About V oice Commands This option causes the About Nuance screen to display the version and build informat ion about the Voice Command software. 1. At the Voice SVC sub-menu, select V oice Settings ➔ About . The About Nuance screen dis plays the version le vel of the Nuance software inst alled on your phone.
Call Functions 29 Outgoin g Call s Y our phone retains in forma tion about the last 90 outgoing calls and stores th em in the Out going calls log. Y ou can revi ew the Outgoing calls log for the time and dat e of a call, as well as other information. Tip : In standby mode, press to vi ew your most recent calls.

In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Calls and locate a call from Outgoing Calls , Incoming Calls , Missed Calls , All Call s , Call T imer , and Data Counter . – or – In standby mode, pr ess and use the Left or Right Navigation key to vie w call categories.
34 Viewing the Da ta Counter 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Calls . 2. Select Data Counter and press . The data counter information displays. 3. Highlight a data counter category and press Reset to clear the counter . – or – Press Reset All to clear all the data counters.
Entering T ext 35 Section 4: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using the phone keypad. This section also describes how to use the T9 predictive text entry syste m to reduce the number of key stro kes needed to enter text.
36 1. While composing a text message, press the Le ft soft key, then select T9Word . 2. For practice, enter the word “ Samsung ” by pressing each of the following ke ys once: T9 Word recognizes th at th e most com monly used wo rd for the numeric sequence entered is “ Samsung.
Entering T ext 37 Entering Symbols Use Symbols mode to enter common symbol s into a text fie ld, such as “@” or “%”. 1. While composing a text me ssage, press the Left sof t key , then select Symbols . The first of thre e symbol screens displays on the screen.
38 Section 5: Understanding Y our Contacts This section details ho w you can manage your daily cont acts by storing their names and numbers in your Con tacts list. Y ou can have your Contacts en tries sorted by name. Contacts Up to 500 entries are stored in Co ntacts.
Understanding Y our Contacts 39 2. Enter the first few characters of a name as entered in Contacts. For example, if yo u saved the name as “Amy Smith”, begin the search by pressing (for “A ”). As you enter lette rs, the names of the closest ma tches display .
40 Example: T o search for “Aaron” you would enter . 2. Press the Up navigation key . A list of Contact names that begin with letters corresponding to th e number keys you pressed displays on the screen. 3. Highlight the searched for Contact. • Press to call the Contact.

44 • Colleague • Fa mily • Friends 3. Highlight a group, then press VIEW to display a list of group members. Add a Ne w Grou p 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Contacts ➔ Group . 2. Press New , enter a name for the group, then press Save .
Understanding Y our Contacts 45 Erase a Grou p The Eras e option deletes a Group and allo ws you to reassign the Contacts. 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Contacts ➔ Group . 2. Highlight the Group to delete, press the Options soft key, then select Erase .
46 Section 6: Messaging This section explains how to send or receive different types of messages. This section also describes the featu res and functionality associat ed with messaging. Types of Messages Y our phone is able to send and receive T e xt messages to compatible phones and devices.
Messaging 47 • Add T o Contacts : Save the recipient’s number or e-mail address as a Contacts list en try . • Cancel Message : Cancel the me ssage, with the option to sa ve it in the Draf ts folder . 5. Press Send ( ) once you a re fi nished entering your message.

Messaging 51 1. In standby mode, press Messages then select Inbox . A list of incoming messages displays. – or – Menu () ➔ Messages ➔ Inbox . 2. Select the message to vi ew . The contents of the highlighted message display . 3. While view ing your message press the Options soft key .
52 •M e s s a g e I n f o : Displays message delivery status, addressee, size, and more. Messages and Lock Mode Y our phone can still receive me ssages while in Lock Mode. The Sender , time and date of the messa ge display , but you cannot access the message until yo u enter the lock code.

Messaging 55 Disabling CMAS Messages Customers may choose not to receive Imminent Threat and AMBER Alerts. Al erts issued by t h e President can not be disabled. T o disable Immi nent Threat Alerts (Extreme and Severe) and AMBER Alerts, foll ow these instructions: 1.
56 •C M A S : Deletes all C MAS/Em ergency messages stored in the CMAS box. • All Messa ges : Deletes all un locked messages stored in all of the message box es, except Voicemai l. 3. Select the messages category to delete and press . Y ou are prompted to confirm th e erasure of all messages in the selected b ox.
Messaging 57 Tip : Y ou can also create new Quick T ext by view ing an Outbox message or highlighting a Dr afts message and using the Save Quick T ext option in the Options menu. (For more information, refer to “Review Messages i n the Outbox” on page 51.
58 Emergenc y Alerts Settings In standby mode, press Messages , then select Msg Settings ➔ CMAS Alerts . Select one of th e followin g options: • Receive Alerts : Select t he types of e mergency aler ts to receiv e. Selections are: Extreme Alert , Severe Alert , or AMBER Alert .
Multimedia 59 Section 7: Multimedia This section outlines your phone’ s multimedia func tions and key features associated with multime dia. Multimedia In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Multimedia .

Multimedia 61 My Images My Images lets you manage the picture that display on th e phone’ s screen while in standby mode (Wallpaper) and as picture IDs for your contacts. 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Multimedia ➔ My Images . A matrix of thumbnail images of your pictures displays on the scr een.
62 My Ringtones My Ringtones assign s ringtones (preloaded and downloaded) as a Ringtone, Contact ID, or as an Alert T one. 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Multimedia ➔ My Ringtones to display a list of ringtones on the screen. 2. Highlight a ringtone and press: • to Play the ringtone.
Multimedia 63 Re view V oice Memos If you’ve saved any voice memos, you can li sten to them anytim e. 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Multimedia ➔ My Ringtones . A list of sound files displays. 2. Use the navigation keys to highlight the voice memo to play .

70 Section 9: T ools This section explains how to use your phone’ s digital assistant functionality t o schedule ev ents, set reminders, perform calculations, an d more. T ools Menu T ool s is a suite of Personal Informatio n Manager (PIM) applications such as a Calendar , an d Memo Pad that run on your phone.
T ools 71 T ur n Bluetoot h On/Of f When your phon e’ s Blue tooth function is tu rned on, you can use the Bluetooth f eatures available. Whe n the Bluetooth fun ction is turned off, you cannot send or receive information through Bluetooth.

T ools 75 When an Alar m Sounds An animated al arm clock displays with the opt ions Snooze or Dismiss , and an alert sounds when the specified time for the alarm arrives. T o silence the alarm, us e the Navigation key t o select Dismiss and press .

T ools 77 Stop Wa tch Y ou can use this menu to set a stop watch. 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ T ools ➔ Stop Watch . 2. Press to Start / Stop stopwatch count. 3. Press the Record soft key to record splits. 4. Press the Reset soft key to erase all stop watch (lap) recorded times.

Settings In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Settings . Location This function identifies your lo ca tion to the network using the Global Positioning System (GPS).

Clock For mat Clock Format lets you choose th e format your phone uses to present the current time in the phone’s front and main displays while the phone is closed or in s tandby mode.

In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Sett ings ➔ Display Settings ➔ Banner . 2. Press and hold to erase the ex isting banner text and enter new text for this banner (Up to 18 characters).
82 Sound Settings This section shows you how to customize y our phone’ s audio properties, such as ringers, keypad tones, alerts, shut down sounds, and more. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Se ttings ➔ Sound Settings . The Sound Settings menu displays.

Changing Y our Settings 85 TTY Mode Y our phone is fully TTY compatib le. TTY equipment is connected to your phone through the headset connector on the right side of the phone. TTY Mode must be en abled before you can use your phone with a TTY device.
86 Airplane Mode When set to On , Airplane Mode disables all radi o functions of your phone. This prevents you from rec eiving or maki ng calls (except emergency calls), bu t allo ws you to use other features (such as the camera and the T ools) safe ly in sensitive environments, such as on board an aircraft.

88 T o store emergency numbers: 1. At the Security sub-menu, select Emergency # . 2. Select from the three emergency number entries. 3. Enter an emergency number ( up to 32 dig its in length). 4. Press to save the number that you entered. Call emergenc y numbers in lock mode: 1.

90 Set Time Use the Set Time option to se t the cu rrent date and time. Note: In digital ser vice mode, the Set Time feature is disabled. The network adjusts time and date automatically . 1. In standby mode, press Menu () ➔ Settings ➔ Phone Settings ➔ Set Time .
