10 Key Fu nctions 1. Status Bar Icons provide inform ation about your device’ s status and options, such as signal strength, wireless technology , ringer se tting, messaging, and battery charge. 2. Display Screen displays all the inform ation needed to operate your device, such as th e call status, the Contacts list, and the date and time.
Understanding Y our Phon e 11 Phone Camera and Exter nal V iews 1. Camera Lens allows you to take pictures and videos using the built-in 2.0 megapixel camera. 2. External Speaker lets you hear different ringers and soun ds and the voice of the other party in speakerphon e mode.
12 4. microSD Card Slot lets you use a micr oSD card to expand the memory of yo ur phone. A 2GB microSD card comes pre-installed. 5. Pow er Button lets you turn the device on or off, or turn off the touchscreen display . • When the screen i s turned of f, press on ce to retur n to Screen lock mode.

14 Sign-in/Sync Error – There has been an issue with your connection to the Google ser ver or you were not properly signed into your account. In order to use Google application or sync features, you must set up and sign into an active Google ac count.
Understanding Y our Phon e 15 T ur ning Y our Device On and Off T ur ning Y our Device On 䊳 Press and hold . Once your device is on, it ma y display “Searchi ng for Service.” When your device finds a signal, it enters standby mode – the device’ s idle state.
16 Note: Long backlight settings, searching for ser vice, vibrate mode, browser use and other variables may reduce the batter y talk and standby times. Tip : Watch your battery level indicator and charge the ba ttery before it runs out of power . Installing the Batter y See “Setting Up Y our Device” on page 5.
Understanding Y our Phon e 17 4. Plug the charging head into a st andard AC power outlet. Always use a Samsung-approved desktop charger , travel charger , or vehicle power adap ter to charge your batter y . Plug the flat end of the c harger into the device’s charger jack.
18 • T urn Wi-Fi off when not in use. • Deactivate the GPS when not needed. Most applications using this function will periodically que ry the GPS satellites for your current location; each query drains your battery. See “Ac tivating Location Mode” on page 123.
Understanding Y our Phon e 19 Search Key The Search key ( ) displays the Go ogle Search box that can be used to search for a key term both on the device and online. In some i nstances, this ke y opens a search box specific only to the curre nt application.

24 Using the Applications T a b Y ou can access all of your local applications by the shortcuts in the Applications tab. Note: This tab houses all default and downloaded applications (installed from Android Market or from the Web). 1. From the Home screen, tap to open the ta b loaded with all of your loc al applica tions.

Gallery – Displays a Ga llery of photos and vide os stored on the microSD card (page 105).

34 Swype K eyboard Ov er view • Entry field a screen area where text, numbers, or other charac ters are entered. • Delete deletes characters from the entry field. • CAPS/AL T : When in ABC mode, this key changes the capitalization of the subsequent entered characters.

Note: If you do not already have a Google account, tap Create and follow the onscreen prompts to create your new account.

Making and Answering C alls 41 Tip: T o silence an incoming call ringer, press either the up or down Volume button. Y our phone notifies yo u of incoming c alls in the foll owing ways: • The phone rings or vibrates. • The backlight illuminates. • The screen displays an incoming call message.
42 Note: When you end the 911 call, you are returned to the Emergency Call Back mode. 2. T ouch and drag across the screen to exit the Emergency Callback mode. Emergency Callback mode: Once you have dialed an em ergency number you can press a button to automat ically redial the emergency number .

44 • Swap calls to answer a second call when ca ll waiting is activated. • End call to end the current call. • Mute/Unmute to mute the microphone during an active call. T a p again to unmute the microphone. Note: If Mute is activated, the speaker mode is deactivated.

Settings 49 W i-Fi Setttings Once Wi-Fi is set up for connect ivity , the phone auto matically uses a Wi-Fi connection when one is a vailable for data ser vices. 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Wireless & networks ➔ Wi-Fi settings . 2.

Settings 51 Vir tual Priv ate Netw ork (VPN) Settings Using this menu you can set up and manage Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Note: Before you can use a VPN you must establish and configure one. Adding a VPN 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Wireless & networks ➔ VPN settings .
52 3. Ta p International Dialing. 4. T ap the entr y field and press from the onscreen keyboard to delete the previous va lue. 5. Enter a new value and tap OK . 6. Ta p North American dialing to reactivate the feature. This disables the International Dialing field.
Settings 53 Warnin g!: 911 Emer gency Ca lling TTY users should make emergency calls by other means, including T elecommunica tions Relay Services (TRS), analog cellular , and landline communications. Wireless TTY calls to 911 may be corrupted when received by public safety answering points (PSAPs), rendering some communications unintelligible.
54 • Only when not in Silent mode : your device on ly vibrates for notificati ons and alerts when Si lent mode is not act ive. Note: The Phone vibrate setting is independent of other call sound settings. For example, if you enable Silent mode with Phone vibrate, your phone will not play a ringtone, but will vibrate for an incoming call.

56 Window Anima tion This feature provi des the use of ani mation when onscree n windows are opened and closed. I f deactivated, windows pop on and off and no tra nsitions are applied. 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Displa y . 2. Ta p Animation and select No animations , Some animations , or All animations .
Settings 57 Adjusting the Date and Time Y our phone obtains it s time and da te info rmation by using the network-provided date, ti me, and time zone. These values can be manually altered. 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Date & time . 2.
58 Note: T urning Loca tion on allows the network to detect your position using GPS technology , making some mobile applications and services easier to use. T urning Loca tion off disables the GPS location function for all purposes except 911, but will not hide your general location based on the cell site serving your call.
Settings 59 Y our D evice’s Scr een Lo ck Feature Lockin g Y our Screen When your device is lo cked, you can only receiv e incoming calls or make calls to 911. 䊳 Press . Locking t he screen prevents accide ntal screen touches from acti vating phone functions.
60 Changing an U nlock P attern Once you have set an unlock patt ern you can easily change the pattern. 1. Draw the unloc k pattern. 2. Ta p Change screen lock and redraw the saved pattern. 3. Ta p None . 4. Ta p Set up screen lock and select Pat t e r n , then recreate a pattern.
Settings 61 Calling in Loc k Mode When your device is lo cked, you can only receiv e incoming calls or make calls to 911o r Customer Service. 1. Press to reveal the lock screen. Note: The Unlock Pattern applies if the Require Pattern setting is enabled.
62 Managing Y our Available Memor y Y ou can manage the information and configuratio n rela ted to both your microSD card and built-in storage memor y . The available devi ce memory provided by these two lo cations is called Internal phone storage . T o view your Device ’ s tota l available memo ry: 1.
Settings 63 Unbloc king Unkn own In stallations There may be instances where you choose to inst all applicatio ns or packs from sources other than the Android Market. Before these applications can be installed, you must allow the installation o f "non-Market applic ations".
64 Manage R unning Ser vices This service is an efficient method for managing power consumption and proc essor/memory resour ces. Processes can be stopped until the phone is restarted. T o stop a current ly running service: 1. From the Home screen, press and tap ➔ Applications ➔ Running ser vices.

68 Accessibility Settings This service co llects all the text you type, including personal data credit card numbe rs ex cept passwords. It may also log your user interface int eractions. 1. Install a screen reader (suc h as Kickback, Soundback, or T alk back) from the Android Market .

70 Section 5: Histor y Viewing Call Log Call Log (History ) is a list of the phone numbers (or Contacts entries) for calls yo u placed, accepted, or mi ssed.
History 71 Call Log Options This list provides easy access to redial an entry , or you can also choose to access two types of history entry list s depending on how they are touched. • Highlight an entry from the list and tap to quickly redial the selected entry .
72 • T a p a contact entry name or tap an entry to display the call options screen: – Call information (Incoming/Outgoing call, and Missed call information) provides the time and date of the call and its duration. – Call [Name or Number] allows you to redia l the entry by name or number .
History 73 3. Ta p t h e First name and Last name fields and enter a name for the contact. 4. Ta p Done when you finish entering information for the contact. Note: The option to select a destination is only available if you have previously established a Google or Corporate account on the device.

T ools 81 Section 7: T ools Before Y ou Be gin Prior to using Google applica tions such as calendar , you will need to have an active Google account (page 39). Google Calendar is an applicat ion that synchronizes new and existing entries between your phone and your online Google account.
82 T o manually sync your calenda r events to a managed corp orate account: 1. Press ➔ and tap ➔ Accounts & sync. 2. T ap within the Corporate account field to reveal the account’ s synchronizat ion settings screen. 3. T a p the green checkmark to toggle it off then back on.
T ools 83 Adding an Event to the Calendar Y our Calendar helps or ganize your time and reminds you of important ev ents. 1. Press and tap (Calendar) . Note: T o synchronize calendar events among your Google and Corpora te accounts, make sure they are being managed by your device (page 65 ).

90 Updating Y our De vice Fir mware Y ou can update your phon e software using the Update Firmware option. Before Updating Y our Fir mware Updating your phone firm ware may erase all user data from yo ur device. Y ou must back up all cr itical informatio n before updating your device firmware.

92 Section 8: V oice Ser vices Important!: T he V oice Control (Speech to Action) feature will not launch if you are currently in an active menu. V oice Dialing Use Voice Dialer , the built-in automatic speech rec ognition (ASR) software, to dial a pho ne number in your Contacts or to launch phone functions.
Voice Services 93 Calling a Contact With V oice Dialer 1. Press and tap ➔ ( Voice Dialer ). 2. When you see “ Listening ,” s a y “ Call ” followed by the name and the label for the contact you wish to call. For example, say “ Call John Sm ith Mobile .

Voice Services 95 V oice Search Voice Se arch works simila rly to the V oice Dialer . It uses built -in voice recognizer so ftware to listen to your spoken words, convert those to text, and then launch a Google sea rch using that text. 1. Press and tap ➔ ( Voice Search ).
96 Section 9: microSD Car d Y our Device’ s microSD Card and Ada pter The micr oSD Car d Y our phone is equipped with a preinstalled 2GB SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity ) memory card. It allows you to store images, videos, music , and voice data in your phone.
microSD Card 97 Note: Do not over-insert the card as this can damage the contact pins. Note: Be sure to use only recommended microSD cards (<32GB). Using non recommended microSD cards could cause data loss and damage y our dev ice. Note: The microSD card and its adapter can be easily damaged by improper operation.
98 Important!: DO NO T remove a microSD card while the device is accessing or transferring files. Doing so will result in loss or damage of data. Make sure your battery is fully charged before using the microSD card. Y our da ta may become damaged or lost if the battery runs out while you are using th e microSD card.

100 6. If a Cannot install this Hardware screen displays, follow these steps: • Click Finish . • From your Deskto p, right -click on t he My Computer icon and select Properties (from the onscreen cont ext menu) . • Click the Ha rdware tab and select the Device Ma nager .
microSD Card 101 Note: This process can be reversed from copying data from the microSD card back to the connected computer . T o remove the connection: 䊳 When you finish tra nsferring data, c lick the Safely Remove Hardware icon on your comput er’ s taskbar , and stop or disconnect the device.
