4 Get started Set up yo ur phone F or instructions on using your phone's buttons, char ger , battery , and other hardwar e feat ures , check the printed Quick Ref erence Guide that came with your phone. The first time y ou turn on the ph one , you'll see a W elcome screen.
5 Why use a Google A ccount ? A Google Account lets you organize and access your person al information from any computer or mobile device: S Never lose your contacts again . When yo u sign in to y our phone with a Google account, all the contacts you associate with that account in the People app are automatically backed up.
6 Get around Aft e r you finish se tting up your phone , Home opens. At the bott om of the screen, you'll find thr ee Naviga tion buttons. The y're alwa ys av ailabl e.
7 Just abo ve the Na vigation buttons, notice the F avorites tr ay: The app icons you keep in the tray remain visible on every Home screen. The All Apps icon in the center is permanent. T ouch it to see all y our apps and widgets . The middle of your Home screen can hold app and widget icons, plus folders.
8 At the top o f the screen, y ou'll see something lik e this: Status icons on the left t ell you which apps ha ve sent yo u notificati ons; for exampl e, that a message has arrived, or it's time f or a meeting. S T o see your notifications, swipe your finger down from the t op of the scr een.
9 T ouch & type Use your fingers t o manipulate icons, but tons, me nus, the onscreen k eyboard, and other items on the touchscr een. Y ou can also change the screen's orient ation. T o select or activ ate something, touch it. T o type something, such as a name , password, or search t erms, just touch where y ou want to type.
10 S Rotate the sc reen : On most scr eens, the orien tation of t he screen rot ates with y our device as you turn it. Y ou can change this Display se tting.
11 Use the lock scr een T o protect personal inf o rmation, you can adjust yo ur phone's lock settings: 1 F rom the Home or Al l Apps sc reen, touch the Settings icon . 2 Scroll down and t ouch Security . 3 T ouch Screen lock . 4 T ouch the type of lock you' d like to use .
12 While the scr een is locked, y ou can respond t o incoming calls in thr ee way s. T ouc h the white phon e icon and slide over one of these icons: Tip T o edit text r esponses from within the Phone app, touch Menu icon > Settings > Quick responses .
13 Search y our phone & the web Google Search can he lp you find anything y ou need on your phone or the web: S A t the top o f any Home scr een, touch Google to type y our search t erm, or the Microphone button to spea k it .
14 Mak e yourself at home Change the wallpaper Wallpapers are images from Gallery (pictures you shot with Camera, synced from Picasa , and so on), still images included with the system, and live images (suc h as an animation or a map that centers on your location).
15 Set ringtone & other sounds Y our phone uses sounds and vibrations to communicate with y ou, including ringtones , notifications, alarms, and navigation f eed back. Y ou can customize an y of thes e sounds, as well as contr olling their volume and the volume for music, videos, games, and other media.
16 Change other Sound settings T o change other sounds and vib rations, go to Settings > Device > Soun d and touch the one yo u want: S Volumes sets the master volume separately for musi c, ringtones & notifications , and alarms.
17 Mak e a phone call 1 T ouch the Phone icon on the H ome or All A pps screen. If the Phone app op ens to a list of numbers instea d of the keypad, swipe left or touch the tab to return to the keypad. 2 T ouch the ke ys to ente r the number . 3 T ouch below the ke ypad to dial.
18 Get your contacts If you hav e a Google Account, any cont acts associated with that account are automatically backed up by Google . This means a ll your c ontacts a re alwa ys availa ble on the w eb and can be synced to any Andr oid phone that's set up with the same account.
19 S On your phone: use t he Peop le app . S F rom a browser on a desktop computer: Go to google.com/ contacts . If you aren't already logged in, you need to provide your Gmail address and password. T o import contacts from a SIM card: 1 Install the SIM car d with your contact s on it in yo ur new phone.
20 Arrange & w ork with apps T o see all your apps, t ouch the All Apps icon on any Home screen. The main All App s screen ope ns. This is where yo u can see all your ap ps, includ ing those download ed from Android Market. Y ou can mov e app icons to any of your Home screens .
21 Use f olders Y ou can combine several app icons in a folder . Drop one app icon over another on a Home screen, and the two icons will be combined. Fr o m a n y H o m e s c r e e n , y o u c a n S Open a folder : T o uch it. The f older opens: S Rename a folder : T ouch its name .
22 Add widgets Widgets are like windows into your apps. The y 're av ailable from an All Apps tab for you to mov e onto your Home screens. To s e e y o u r w i d g e t s : 1 T ouch the All Apps icon on your Home scr een. 2 T ouch Widgets at the top of the screen.
23 Manage notifications Not ifications r eport the arrival of new messa ges, ca lendar ev ents, and ala rms, as w ell as on going e vents , such as when you'v e configured your phone as a Wi-Fi hotspo t. When you receive a notification, its icon appears in the top left corner of the screen.
24 T ry some apps Start Gmail Y ou ca n use Gmail to read and write email from any mobile device or browser . Al l your email is always up to dat e and a vaila ble no matt er where you chec k it fr om.
25 S Organize email . Chec k the box beside a message to sele ct it. Then use the icons and menu along the bottom of the screen to manage the selected messages . S Change your settings . T ouch the Menu icon t o change your prefer e nces, add an account, or get Help.
26 Find P eople The P eople app g ives y ou quick a nd easy acce ss to e v ery one you w ant to r each. When you fir st turn on your pho ne and sign into a G oogle A ccount, an y exis ting contacts fr om that account are synced with your People app.
27 S Edit details . While viewing a contact, touch the Menu icon and choose options to edit or share contact details, se t ringtone, and so on. Y ou can al so t ouch the star beside the Menu icon to add a contact to your F avorites list. S Change your sett ing s.
28 Manage your Calendar The Calendar app lets y ou vi ew and edit your schedule. When you fir st set up your phone , you configured it to us e an existing Google A ccount (such as Gmail), or you crea ted a new one.
29 Use y our Camera The Camera app is a combination camera and camcorder that actually consists of two cameras, one facing back ( toward you) and one facing forward ( a way fr om you). The forwar d-facing camera includes a Panorama mode that allows you to cr eate a single image by panning acr oss a scene.
30 While Camera is open, y ou can also to uch these icons to adjust its settings: Icon Name Description Mode Switch among camera, video , and panorama modes. Switch Camera T oggles between cameras on the f ront and back o f the phone . Zoom T ouch & hold, then slide to zoom in and out.
31 Beam screen content Y ou can beam a w eb page , a video, o r other co ntent f rom your scr een to anothe r device by bring ing the devices toget her (typically b ack to back). Before you begi n : Make sure both devices are unlock ed, support Near Field Communication (NFC), and have both NF C and Android Beam TM tur ned on.
32 Manage downloads Files , apps, and o ther items y ou download fr om Gmail, Email, Andr oid Market, or in ot her way s are s tor ed in your device's int ernal stor age. Y ou can use the Do wnloads app to view , reopen, or delete what you've downloaded .
33 T une perf ormance Optimize battery lif e Y ou can extend your battery's lif e between charges by turning o ff fe atures that y ou don't need. Y ou can also monitor how apps and s ystem r esources consume battery pow er . T o adjust the settings described her e, first touch th e Settings icon on a Home or All Apps screen.
34 Check battery lev el and usage details G Open Settings > Device > Batte ry . The list at the bo ttom o f the screen shows the break down of batt ery usage for individual apps and services.
35 Optimize data usage Data us age ref ers to the amount of data uploaded or downlo aded by your device during a given period. Depending on the de vice and yo ur wireles s plan, you may be charged additiona l fees when your data usage ex ceeds your plan's li mit.
36 T o adjus t the settings de scribed her e: 1 T ouch the Settings icon on a Home or All Apps screen. 2 T ouch Wireless & networks > Data usage . By def ault, you see the settings f o r mobile data: that is , the data network or networks provided by your carrier: It's possib le to show Wi-Fi da ta usage set tings in a sepa rat e tab .
37 Set data usage limit 1 Check Set mobile data limit . A dialog appears that describ es the limit you're setting. 2 Read the message. If y ou're willing to proceed, click OK . The red line at the top of the graph activ ates , so you can drag it up or down.
38 View or res trict data usage by app Some apps transfer dat a in the background; that is , when you'r e not actually using the app , it may dow n lo ad da ta for fu ture refe ren ce. Res tr ic ti ng background data usage fo r ind ividual apps can sometimes be a useful w ay to r educe your o verall data usage.
39 Adv anced data usag e settings T wo other se ttings available f rom the Menu icon can have dramatic eff ects, but may sometimes be useful: G Data roaming can result in steep additional charges. Howe ver , in some locations this may be the only way to conne ct to the Inter net.
40 Optimize memory usage Y ou typically don't need to worry about managing apps beyond instal ling, opening, and using them. B ut there ma y be times when y ou want to know mo r e about what's happening behind the scenes. Apps use two kind s of memory: int ernal sto rage and RAM.
41 Use the Apps screen The Apps screen allows you to adjust several aspects of the way your device uses memory . T o view these settings: 1 F rom a Home or All Apps screen, touch the Settings icon . 2 Under Device , touch Apps . Y ou'll see three tabs at the top of the screen, each disp laying a list of apps or their components: G Downloaded .
42 T o view details about an app or other item listed under any tab , touch its name. The info rmation and contr ols av ailable vary a mong diff erent types o f apps , but commonly i nclude: G Force stop button : Stops an app that is misbeha ving. Stopping an app , process, or service ma y cause your device to stop w o rking correctly .
43 L earn the Phone app Dial store d numbers Y ou can place cal ls from the Phone app , the People app , or other apps or widgets that display contact information. Where ver you see a phon e number , you can usually touch it to dial. T o dial using the Phone app: G T ouch the Phone icon on a Home or All Apps screen.
44 Y ou can switch applications during a call; f or exa mple, t o look up inf ormation by using the Bro wser . The green phone icon appears in the Status bar while the ca ll is underway . T o return to th e Phone a pp whi le a call is in progress: 1 Swipe down fr om the top of the screen to r eveal your notifica tions.
45 Answer or div ert calls When you receive a phone call, the Incoming Call screen opens, displaying the caller ID and any additional information about the ca ller that y ou've entered in People . All incoming calls are recorded in the Phone app's Call log tab.
46 W ork with the Call log The Call log is a list of all the calls you've placed, received, or missed. It provides a convenient way to redial a number , return a call, or add a number to your Contacts. Within the Phone app , the Call log is under the middle tab .
47 Place an Internet (SIP ) call Y ou can place cal ls over the Int ernet when connected to a Wi-Fi network, ra ther than over y our mobile network. T o do so, yo u must first conf igure yo ur phon e to use an Int ernet calling account. A fter you set up the account, placing an Internet call is no different than placing any other call.
48 Y ou'll also want t o add SIP a ddresses f or the co ntact s you wan t to call this w ay . T o do so: 1 T ouch the contact's info in the Call log tab . 2 T ouch to go to the contact's card. 3 T ouch the Menu icon , then Edit . 4 Scroll to the bott om of the screen, to uch Add another field , and then Internet call .
49 Listen to yo ur voicemail When you hav e a new voicemail message, the voicemail icon appears in the Status area at the top left of your screen. T o read your voicemail: 1 Swipe down fr om the top of the scr een to view yo ur notifications. The v oicemail no tification display s the num ber of unread messages and a number to dial.
50 Dial by v oice T o place a phone call by speaking, use the V oice Di aler app . If you hav e a BlueT ooth headset that supports voice di aling, it may work with V o ice Dialer .
51 Options during a call During a call, you can G Answer another incoming call: Y ou see the Incoming Call screen, di splaying the cal ler ID and any additional information about the ca ller that y ou've entered in P eople.
52 G Mute your micr ophone. G Put the other party on hold. G Switch to a nother call i n progr ess. G Make ano ther call separa tely from the firs t call, which is put on hold.
53 Enter & edit te xt Use the k eyboard Y ou can enter te xt using the onscr e en key board. Some apps open it aut omatically . In others, you open it by t ouching where y ou want to type. As you type , the keyboar d displays sugges tions above the to p row of k eys.
54 Basic editing G Move the insertion point : T ouch where you w ant to type . The cursor blinks in the new position, and a gree n tab appears below it. Drag the tab to move the cursor . G Select text : T ouch & hold or double-tap within the t ext.
55 Tips & shortcuts G Type capital letters : T ouch the Shift ke y once to swit ch to capital lett ers f or one letter . Or touch & hold the Shift ke y while you type. When you r e lease the key , the lowercase letters reappear . G Turn caps lock on : Double-tap or touch & hold the Shif t k ey , so it changes to .
56 T ype text b y speaking Y ou can use voice input to type text by speaking. This f eature uses Google's sp eech -recogni tion service , so you must ha ve a data connection on a mobile or Wi-Fi network to use it. T ext that y ou enter b y speaking is underlined.
57 Connect to netw orks & de vices Connect to mobile network s Depending on your carri er and se rv ice plan, your phone may connec t automatically to your carrier's fas tes t ava ilable dat a network. Or you ma y need to insert a SI M card or configur e detail s fo r a specific carrier .
58 Mobile network settings Note that you can't adjust mobile network setting s when Airplane mode is selected. The setting s available may vary depending on your device and plan. G Data enabled . Check to turn d ata access on for all available mobile networks.
59 Connect to Wi-Fi network s Wi-Fi is a wireless networking techno logy that can pr ovide Internet acce ss at dist ances of up to 100 meters , depending on the Wi-Fi ro uter and your surr oundings. T o use Wi-Fi, y ou connect to a wireless acces s poin t, or "hot spot.
60 Add a W i-F i netwo rk Y ou can add a Wi- Fi network so your device will r emember it, alon g with any security credentials, and connect to it automatically when it's in r ange. Y ou must also add a Wi -Fi networ k if the network does not broadcast its name (SSID ), or to add a Wi- Fi network when you ar e out of range .
61 Configure pr oxy settings f or a Wi-Fi network Some network administr ators r equire you t o connect to in ter na l o r ex ter nal ne two rk res ou rces vi a a pro xy server . By default, the Wi-F i networks y ou add ar e not configured to connect via a pr oxy , but you can change that for each Wi-Fi network y ou've added.
62 Set Wi-Fi notifications, disconnect policy , and other advanced options T o work w ith a dva nced Wi-Fi settin gs: 1 T urn on Wi-Fi, if it's not al ready o n.
63 This scr een also displays the f ollowing in forma tion: G MAC address : T h e M ed i a Ac c es s C o nt r ol ( M AC) ad d re s s of your device when connected t o a Wi-Fi network.
64 Connect to Bluetooth de vices Bluetooth is a short -range wirele ss communications technology used t o communicate between devices over a distance o f about 8 meters. T he most common Bluetooth devices ar e he adsets f or making calls or listening to music, hands-fr ee kits for cars , and other portable devices, including laptop s.
65 Change your phone's Bluetooth name Y our phone has a generic Bluetooth name b y default, which is visibl e to other Bluetooth de vices when you connect them. Y ou can change the name so that it is more re cognizable. 1 Under Settings > Wireless & networ ks , make sur e Bluetooth is turned on.
66 Pai r your phone with a Blueto oth de vice Y ou must pair your phone with a device before y ou can connect to it. Once y ou pair your phone with a device , they sta y pair ed unless yo u unpair them. 1 Under Settings > Wireless & networks , mak e sure Bluet ooth is turned on.
67 Connect to a Bluetooth device Once you'v e pair ed with a Bluetoo th device, you can connect t o it manually; for e xample, to switch devices or to r econnect after it is back in range . 1 Under Settings > Wireless & netw orks, make sur e Bluetooth is turned on.
68 Obtain a network connection via Bluetooth tethering If you ha ve a computer or other de vice that can share its netw ork connection via Bluetooth, you can configure your phone to obtain a network connection by Bluetooth tetheri ng (sometimes called reverse tethering).
69 Connect to k eyboards, mice , and other de vices Y ou can connect a ke yboard, mouse , or even a joystick or other input device to your phone via USB or Bluetooth and use it just as yo u would with a P C. Y ou may need an adapt er to connect the ke y board or other device to your phone's USB port.
70 Mice When you connect a mouse to your phone and move th e mouse, an arrow-s haped cursor appears , just as on a co mputer: G Use the mouse to move the cursor . G Clicking, pressing, and dr agging with the mouse butt on is equivalent t o touching, t ouching & hold- ing, and dragging with your finger .
71 Connect to a Windows comput er via USB Y ou can use a USB cable to connect your phone t o a Windows computer and transf er music, pictures , and other files in both directions. This connection uses the MT P pro tocol, which is supp orted b y most recent v ersions of Windows.
72 Connect to a Macintos h computer vi a USB Y ou can use a USB cable to connect your phone t o a computer r unning Mac OS X with a USB cable and transf er music, pictures, and other files in both directions. This connection uses the MTP prot ocol, which is not su pport ed by M ac OS X na tively .
73 Share y our mobile data connection Y ou can share your phone's mobile data connection with a single comput er via USB tethering or Bluetooth t ethering. Y ou can also sh are yo ur data connection with up to 8 devices at once, by turning it into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.
74 Share y our phone's da ta connecti on via USB If your comput er is running Windo ws 7 , Mac OS X, or a recent dist rib ution of some fla vors o f Linux (such as Ubuntu), y ou can follow these instru ctions without an y special preparation.
75 Share your phone's data connection via Bluetooth If your comput er can obtain an Internet connection vi a Bluetooth, you can configur e your phone to share it's mobile data connection with you r computer . 1 Pair yo ur phone with your computer .
76 Rename or secure y our portable hotspot Y ou can change the name of your phone's Wi-F i ne twork name (SSID ) and secure its Wi-Fi network when it's acting as a porta ble hotspot. 1 Go to Settings > Wireless & networks > Mo re > Tethering & portable ho tspot .
77 Connect to virtual priv ate network s Virtual privat e networks (VPNs) allow you t o connect t o the reso urces inside a secure d local netwo rk, from outside that network.
78 Connect to a VPN 1 F rom the VPN screen, touch the name of the VPN. 2 In the dialog that opens, enter any requested credentials. 3 T ouch Connect . When you'r e connected to a VPN, a St atus icon and no tification ar e disp layed continuously .
79 Delete a VPN 1 F rom the VPN screen, touch & hold the name of the VPN. 2 T ouch & hold the VPN you w ant to delete . 3 In the dialog that opens, touch Delete netw ork.
80 Control airplane mode & other netwo rk settings These settings are available under Settings > Wireless & networks > More . F ollow the links for detailed instruc tions: G Airplane mode . Che ck to tu r n off a ll t he de vic e 's radios that transmit data.
81 Search b y te xt & voice Refine Google Sear ch Google Search is available from the top of any Home s creen: G Speak search term s : T ouch the Micr ophone i con . A fter yo u say what y ou're looking f or , the Browser opens to a list of search r esults .
82 Below the search term sug gestions are items found on your phone: G A Maps marker indicates a business listing. T ouc h to view the listing, see its location on a map, get directions , call, or take other actions. G A F avorites icon identif ies one of your bookmarks.
83 Set searchab le items T o adjust where Google Search looks on your phone: 1 On a Home screen, touch Go ogle . 2 T ouch Menu icon > Search settings > Searchable items . 3 Check the items on your phone that y ou want to include in sear ches. 86 Use V oice A ctions In addition t o searching the we b by speak ing, you can use V oice Actions to call your contacts, get directions , send message s, and perf orm a number of o ther common tasks . 1 On a Home scr een or when the k eyboard f or th e Browser's Omnibox is open, touch the Microphone icon at the upper right.

91 Manage accounts Add or remo ve accounts Y ou can use multiple Google Accounts and Microsof t Exchange A ctiveSync account s on your device. Y ou may also be able t o add other kinds of accounts , depending on your apps. Some you can add in the Account s & Sync screen, as described her e.
92 Add an account T o add some accounts, you ma y need to obtain detai ls from system administrator about the service to which the account connects. F or example, y ou may need to know the account's domain or server addre ss. 1 Go to Settings > Personal > Accoun ts & sync .
93 Remo ve an account Y ou can remove an account to delete it and all i nform ation associated with it from your device, including email, contacts , settings, and so on. 1 Go to Settings > Perso nal > Accounts & sync . 2 T ouch the account to delete .
94 Configure account s ync options Y ou can configure synchronization options for an y of yo ur apps. Y ou can also configure what kinds of data you s ynchroniz e for each account. Some ap ps , s uch as Gmail and Calendar , have separate synchroniz ation settings that pr ovide mor e fine-grained cont rol.
95 Configure general sync settings 1 Go to Settings > Perso nal > Accounts & sync . indicates that some or all of an account's information is configured to sync automatically . indicates that none of an acco unt's inform ation is config ured to sync automatically .
96 Change an account's sync settings 1 Go to Settings > Personal > Accoun ts & sync . 2 T ouch the account whose sync settings y ou want to chan ge. The Sync Settings screen opens, di spla ying a list of t he kinds o f inf ormation the account can sync.
97 Change backup & reset options Y ou can back up settings and other da ta associated with one or mor e of yo ur Google Account s. If y ou need to replace o r factory reset your device, you can res tore y our data f or any accounts tha t were previo usly backed up.
98 G Automatic resto re . Check this option to re store settings an d other da ta when you rei nstall an app. This fe ature r equires that y ou are backin g up your data with yo ur Google Account and that the app is using the backup service. G Factory data reset .
99 Secur e y our phone Set screen lock Depending how yo u use your phone, y ou may want to set some f orm of automatic scr een lock to pr event unauthoriz ed access . If a scr een lock has been se t, the screen locks when y our phone's display goes to sleep.
100 Y ou can choose among these lock options, li s ted in approximate or der of strength: G Slide provides no pro tection, but lets y ou get to the Home scr een quickly , or open Came ra and start taking pictur es immediately . G Face Unlock lets you unlock your phone b y looking at it.
101 Encrypt y our phone Y ou can encrypt all the data on y our phone: Google A ccounts, application dat a, music and other media, downloaded information, and so on. If yo u do, y ou mu st ente r a numeric PIN or passwor d each time y ou turn on y our phone.
102 Wh en you' re re ady to tur n o n e ncr yp ti on: 1 F rom a Home or All Apps scre en, touch the Settings icon . 2 T ouch Personal > Secur ity > Encryption > E ncrypt phone .
