Getting Started 5 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section helps yo u to quickly start using your phone. Understanding this User Manual The sections of thi s manual generally f ollow the features of your phone. A robust index for features begins on page 165.
6 Activating y our Phone If you purchased your phone from your carrier’ s store, it is activate d and ready to use. If you re ceived a new phone by ma il, it may need to be activa ted before yo u can use it. T o ac tivate your phone , choose from the follo wing: • Visit you carrier’ s store.
Getting Started 7 Batter y Co v er The battery is under a removable co ver on the back of the phone. Remo ving the batter y cover 䊳 Pull up using the slot provid ed (1), while lifting the cover off the phone (2). Installing the batter y cover 䊳 Align the cover and press it fi rmly into p lace, making sure it snaps into place at the corners.
8 Remo ving the Batter y 1. Remove the batt ery cover . 2. Lift the batter y up and out of the phone, using the slot provided. 3. Replace the battery cover . Charging the Batter y Y our phone comes with a Wall/U SB Ch arger (Charging Head and USB cable) to charge your phone from any 120/220 V AC outlet.

When charging is complete, unplug the charging head from the power outl et and remove the USB c able from the phone. Non-Suppor ted Batteries Samsung phones do not support non-approved batteries.

While powering on, the phone connects with the network, then displays the Home screen and ac tive alerts. Note: Y our phone’ s internal antenna is loca ted along the bottom back of the phone.

12 T ask Manager Y our phone can run applicatio ns simultaneously , with some applications running in the background. Use T ask Manager to see which applications are running on your phone, and to end running applications to exte nd battery life. Y ou can also uninstall applications from your phone and see how much memory is used by applications.
Getting Started 13 Memory Card Y our phone supports removable microSD™ or microSDHC™ memory cards of up to 32GB ca pacity , for storage of music, pictures, and othe r files. Note: Y ou can only store music files that you own (from a CD or purchased with the phone) on a memory card.
14 Securing Y our Phone By default, the phone locks auto matically when the screen times out, or you can lock it manuall y . Y ou can unlock the phone using one of the default Unlock screens, or for increased security , use a personal screen unlock pattern.

22 Home Screen The Home screen is the star ting point for using your phone. Note: Unless stated otherwise, instructions in this User Manual start with the phone unlocked, at the Home screen. 1. Annunciator Line : Presents icons to show network status, battery power , and c onnection details.

Slide your finger horizont ally across the screen to scroll to the left or right side panels.
24 Annu nciator Line The Annunciator line displays icons to show network status, battery power , a nd other details. Signal Strength : Current signal strength. The greater the number of bars, the stronger th e signal. Airplane Mode Active : All wireless communica tions are disabled.

Note: When you access Applications , the Home shortcut replaces the Applications shortcut to provide quick return to the Home screen.

34 Section 3: Call Functions This section describes how to make, answer or end cal ls. Making Calls Y our phone offers multip le ways to make calls: • Use the Phone touch screen Dialer to enter the phone number or speed dial number . • Return a call, or call a recent caller , from Call log .

Accounts Y our phone provides the abil ity to synchronize in formation from a variety of accounts, including Google, a Corporate Exchange server , and social networking s i tes such as Facebook, T witter , and MySpace.

46 J oin Cont acts Y our phone can synchronize with multiple accounts, including Google, Corpora te Exchange, a nd other email providers, plus social networking sites like Fa c ebook, T witter , and MySpace. When you synchronize co ntacts fr om these account s with your phone, you may have multiple contacts for one person.
Contacts and Accounts 47 Sending Na mecar ds Sending a Namecar d (vCard) Y ou can send a contact namecard as a vCards via Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices, or via Gmail as an attachment . Import ant!: Not all Bluetooth devices will accept contacts, and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.

54 Entering T ext Using Swype Swype is a new way to enter te xt on touch screens. Inste ad of touching each key , use your finger to trace over each lett er of a word. For each word, place your fing er o n the first let ter and glide to the subsequent letters, li fting on the last letter .

56 Entering T ext Using the Samsung K eyboard This device has a built -in, QWER TY keypad (portrait mode) or keyboard (landscape mode). Using the QWER TY keypad/ keyboard, you can type letter , numbers, punctuation, and other characters. The Samsung keyboard is the default setting on the phone.

58 Entering T ext Using the Android Keyboard The Android Keyboard is a custom virtua l QWERTY keyboard, featuring predic tive text. In put characters by tapping the on-screen keys with your finge r , or use speech reco gnition. As you enter characters, predic tive te xt matches your key touches to common words and displays them.
Messaging 59 Section 6: Messaging This section describes how to send and receive messages, and other features associated with messaging. Types of Messages Y our phone supports thes e types of messages: • Te x t m e s s a g e s : Send and receive simple messages co ntaining text to other mobile phones or email addresses (al so known as SMS).

Connections 87 Mobile AP Use Mobile AP to share you r phone’ s 3G internet connection with a PC or other device through Wi-Fi, using your phone as the mobile hotspot. Note: Mobile AP consumes battery po wer and uses data service. T o use Mobile AP , you need the Mobile AP fea ture from your wireless provider .
88 Connecting a Device via M obile AP Use the other device’ s Wi-F i cont rol to connect to your phone’ s Mobile AP . Tip: In order for other devices to connect to your Mobile AP , you can set your device to allow all devices to connect, or add the device 1.
Connections 89 Pairing w ith a Bluetooth De vice Search for a Blue tooth device a nd pair w ith it, to exchange information between your phone and the device. Note: After pairing, your phone and the target device will recognize each other and exchange information without having to enter a passcode or PIN.
