I NTRODUCTION 1. 6 Understanding the Control Panel On Line/Error and Toner Save LEDs LED Description If the On Line/Err or lights green, the printer is ready to print. If the On Line/Err or lights red, the printer is experiencing an error , such as jammed paper , no paper , the open top or front cover , or the empty toner cartridge.
I NTRODUCTION 1. 7 1 Cancel button If you press the Cancel button in Ready mode, this LED is on and the T oner Save mode is enabled. If you press this button once again, this LED is o ff and the T oner Save mode is disabled. If the On Line/Err or and Toner Save LEDs blink, your system has some problems.

S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 2 2 Unpacking 1 Re move the printer and all accessories from the packing carton. Make sure that the printer has been pa cked with the following it ems: Notes: • If any items are missing or damaged, notify your dealer immediately .
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 3 2 Carefully remo ve all of packing tape from the prin ter . Selecting a Location Select a level, stable place with adequate space for air circulation. Allow extra space for op ening cover and tr ay . The area should be well-v e ntilated and away from dire ct sunlight or sources of heat, cold, and humidity .
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 4 2 Installing the Toner Cartridge 1 Grasp the front cover and pull it toward you to open. Note: Because the printer is very light, it may be moved when you use it; for example, when opening/clo sing the tray or installing/ removing the toner cartridge.
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 5 3 Gently roll the cartridge 5 or 6 ti mes to distribute the toner . Thoroughly roll ing the car tridge will as sure maxi mum copies per cartridge. Note: If toner gets on your clothing , wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash clothing in cold water .
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 6 2 5 Unfold the toner cartridge handle and grasp it. Insert the cartridge in the pr inter until it snaps into p lace. Note: Carefully insert or pull out the toner cartridge not to scratch against the printer . 6 Close the front cover .
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 7 Loading Paper Y ou can load approximat ely 150 sheets of paper in the tr ay . 1 Grasp the paper input tray and pull it toward you to open.
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 8 2 3 Load paper with the print side facing up . Make sure that all four corners are flat in the tra y . 4 P ay attention not to overload p aper . Paper overloading may cause paper jams. 5 Pinch the rear guide to adjus t for the paper length and pinch the side gui de and slide it to the left flush aga inst the paper .
S ETTING U P Y OUR P RINTER 2. 9 6 If necessary , close the pape r cover t o kee p t he p ap er loaded in the tray from dust. Connecting a Printer Cable T o print from your computer , yo u need to connect your printer to your computer with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable.

3 This chapter will help you understand types of paper you can use with th is printer and how to prop erly load pap er in the tray for the best print quality .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 2 Choosing Paper and Other Materials Y ou can print on a variet y of print materials, such as plain paper , envelopes, labels , transparen cies and so on. See “Paper Specifications” on page 6.3. T o get the best p ossible print quality , use only hi gh-quality copier- grade paper .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 3 3 Type, Input Source s and Capa cities Guidelines for Paper and Special Materials When selectin g or loading paper , e nvelopes, or other special material, keep these guidelines in mind: • Attempting to print on damp, curled, wrinkled, or torn pap er can cause paper jams and the poor print qual ity .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 4 •F o r e n v e l o p e s : - Use only well-const ructed envelopes wi th sharp, well creased folds. - Do not use envelopes with clasps and snaps. - Do not use envelopes with wi ndows, coated lining, self- adhesive seals, or other synthe tic materials.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 5 3 • F or Card Stock or Cu stom-sized materials: - P ostcards, 3.5 by 5. 83 in.(index) cards and other custom- sized material s can be printed with thi s printer . The minimum si ze is 76 by 127mm( 3.0 by 5.0 in.) and the maximum size is 216 by 356mm(8 .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 6 Verifying the Output Location The printer has the paper output tray that collects paper face- down, in correct order . Notes: • If you continuously print many pages, the surface of the output tra y may become hot. Be careful not to touch the surface, and especially keep children away from the surface.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 7 3 Using Manual Feed Mode If you select Manual Feed in the Source option, you can manually load paper in the tray . M anually loading p aper can be helpful when you want to check the print quality after each page is printed.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 8 Printing on Special Materials 1 Open the paper i nput tray . 2 Load the print material in the paper input tr ay . Do not mix types. See the following directions to load each type of print material. •Load the envelopes in the tray with the flap side down .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 9 3 •Load transparencies in the tr ay with pr int s ide u p , and the top with the adhesive strip going fir st . Notes: • T o prevent transparencies from sticking to each other , do not let the printed sheets stack up as they are printed out.
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 10 3 Adjust the side guid e to the edge of the materi al. 4 When you print on special m aterial, you mus t select Manual Feed for Source from the so ftwa re application, and then se lect the c orrect pap er size a nd type. For details, see Software User’s Guide .
U SING P RINT M ATERIALS 3. 11 3 In Manual Feed mode, you can’t ca ncel a print job by pressing the Cancel button. T o cancel a print job in Manual Feed mode: 1 T urn the printer off . 2 Double-click the icon at rig ht bottom of the window. 3 Select a job you want to cancel.

M AINTAINING Y OUR P RINTER 4. 2 4 Maintaining the Toner Cartridge Toner cartridge storage T o get the m aximum r esults from the toner cart ridge, keep the following guide lines in mind. • Do not remove the toner cartridge from its package until ready for use.
M AINT AINI NG Y OUR P RINTER 4. 3 Redistributing Toner When toner is low, faded or light areas may appear on a printed page. Y ou may be abl e to temporarily improve the p rint quality by redistributing the toner . The following proced ures may allow you to finish the current pr int job before re placing the toner cartridg e.
M AINTAINING Y OUR P RINTER 4. 4 4 3 Gently shake the toner cartridge fr om side to side fi ve or six times to redistr ibute the toner . Note: If the toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash clothing in cold water . Hot water sets toner into fabric.
M AINT AINI NG Y OUR P RINTER 4. 5 Replacing the Toner Cartridge If the print remai n s light after r edistributing toner (see page 4.3), replace the toner cart ridge. Remove the old cartridge and install a ne w toner cartridge . See “Installin g the T oner Cartridg e” on page 2.
M AINTAINING Y OUR P RINTER 4. 6 4 Cleaning the Printer T o maintain the prin t quality , follow the cle aning procedures below each time the toner cartridge is repl aced or if print qualit y problems occur . Note: While cleaning the inside of the printer , be careful not to touch the tr ansfer roller (located underneath the toner cartridge).
M AINT AINI NG Y OUR P RINTER 4. 7 Cleaning inside the printer 1 T urn the pr inter off and unplu g the power cord , then wait for the printer to cool.
M AINTAINING Y OUR P RINTER 4. 8 4 Note: T o prevent damage to the toner ca rtridge, do not expose it to light for more than few minute. Cover it with a piece of pape r , if necessary . Also, do not touch the black tr ansfer roller inside the printer .
M AINT AINI NG Y OUR P RINTER 4. 9 Consumables and Replacement Parts From time to tim e, you will need to r eplace the rolle r and fuser unit to maintain top performance and avoid print quali ty problems and p aper feed prob lems result ing from worn pa rts.

S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 2 Troubleshooting Checklist If the printer is not work ing properly , consu lt the following che cklist. If the pr inter does not pass a step, follow the corr esponding troublesh ooting suggestions. Check Solution Check the power cord and the power switch.

S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 5 5 ATTENTION: If you have any printing problem after your printer prints about 50,000 pages, you must contact the customer service to replace the transfer roller . The printer prints, but the text is wrong, garbled, or incomplete.
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 6 Clearing Paper Jams Occasionally , paper can be jammed during a print job. Some of causes include: • The tray is overfilled. • The front cover has been opened du ring a print job. • Paper that does not meet paper specifications has been used.
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 7 5 2 Open the top cover and the inner cover . Cautions: • When removing the j a mmed paper , be careful not to touch the heat roller (located underneath th e inner cover). It is hot and could cause burns! • The top and inner cover themselves may also be hot due to the heat roller .
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 8 4 Close the inner cover and the top cover . Printing resumes automatically . Note: F ailed pages will not reprint. T ry printing the pages. In the Paper Feed Area 1 R emove any miss feed paper by pull ing it out by the visi ble edge from the tr ay .
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 9 5 Around the Toner Cartridge 1 Open the front cover . 2 Pull the toner cartridge out and remove it from the printer . 3 Gently pull the pape r toward you.
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 10 5 Reinstall the toner cartridge and close the front cover . Y our printer resume s printing the docu ment from failed page s. Tips for Avoiding Paper Jams By selecting the correct p aper types, most paper j ams can be avoided.
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 11 5 Solving Print Quality Problems Problem Solution Light or faded print If a vertical white streak or faded area appears on the page: • The toner supply is low . Y ou may be able to tempor arily extend the toner cartridge life.
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 12 Vertical lines If black vertical streaks appear on the page: • The drum inside the toner cartridge has probably been scratched. Install a new toner cartridge. If white vertical streaks appear on the page: • The surface of the LSU part inside the machine may be dirty .
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 13 5 Background scatter Background scatter results from bits of toner distributed on the printed page. • The paper may be too damp. T ry printing with a different batch of paper . Do not open packages of paper until necessary so that the paper does not absorb too much moisture.
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 14 Wrinkles or creases • Ensure that the paper is loaded properly . • Check the paper type and quality . See “Paper Specifications” on page 6.3. • T urn over the stack of paper in the input tray . Also t ry rotating the paper 180° in the feeder .
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 15 5 Horizontal stripes If horizontally aligned black streaks or smears appear: • The toner cartridge may be installed improperly . R emove the cartridge and reinsert. • The toner cartridge ma y be defective. Install a new toner cartridge.
S OLVING P ROBLEMS 5. 16 Troubleshooting Error Messages When the printer experiences an erro r , the control panel will i ndicate an error message with th e indicator lights. Find the lig ht pattern below that matches th e printer light patte rn and follow t he solutions t o clear the error .

Basic Printing 7 Printer Settings Y ou can use the printer properties window , which allows you to access all of the printer options you need when using yo ur printer . When the printer prop erti es are displayed, you can review and change the settings neede d for your print job.
Basic Printing 8 Paper Tab Use the following options to set the basic paper handling specifications when you access the p r inter properties. See “Printing a Document” on page 6 for more inform ation on accessing printer properties. Click the Paper tab to access v arious paper properties.

Advanced Printing 13 Printing Posters This feature allows you to print a single-page document onto 4, 9, or 16 sheets of paper , for the purpose of pasting the sheets together to form one poster-size d o cument. 1 T o change the print settings from your softwa re application, access printer p roperties.
Advanced Printing 14 Fitting Your Document to a Selected Paper Size This printer feature allow s you to scale your print job to any selected paper size regardless of the digital document size. Th is can be useful when you want to check fine details on a small document.

Advanced Printing 16 Using Overlays What is an Overlay? An overla y is text and/or images stored in the computer hard disk drive (HDD) as a special file fo rmat that can be printed on any document. Ove rlays are often used to take the place of preprinted forms and letterhead p aper .

T o print an overlay with a docume nt: 1 Create or open the document yo u want to print. 2 T o change the print settings from your softwa re application, access printer p roperties.
Sharing the Printer Locally 18 4 Sharing the Printer Locally Y ou can connect the printer dire ctly to a selected computer , which is called “host comp uter , ” on the network. The printer can be shared by other users on the network through a Windows 95 or higher network printer connection.
Using Status Monitor 19 5 Using Status Monitor If an error occurs while p r inti ng, the Status Monitor window appears, showing the error . N OTES : • The Status Monitor program can only be used if you connect your printer to y our c omputer with the USB cab le, or if the printer is network ed.

Using Your Printer in Linux 22 Installing the Printer Driver 1 Make sure that you connect th e printer to your computer . T urn both the computer and the printer on. 2 When the Administr ator Login window appears, type in “ root ” in the Login field and enter the system password.
Using Your Printer in Linux 23 9 Click the Connection tab and ensure that the printer p ort is set properly . If it is not, change the device setting. 10 Y ou can use the Settings tab and the Queue tab to view the printer’s current settings. If nece ssary , you can change the settings.
Using Your Printer in Linux 24 Uninstalling the Printer Driver 1 From the Startup Menu icon at the bottom of the desktop, select Linux Print er and then Configuratio n Tool . Y ou can also access the Linux Printer Configuration window by typing in “ linux-co nfig ” from the T erminal screen.
