Getting Started 7 T ext Conv entions This manual provides condensed informa tion about how to use your device. T o mak e this possible, the following text conventions are used to represent often-used s teps: Batt er y Y our device is powered by a rechargeable, standard Li-Ion batter y .
8 Note: The battery comes partially charged. Y ou must fully charge the battery before using your device for the first time. After the first c harge, you can use the device while charging. 1. Insert the USB cable int o the Charging Head (1). 2. Insert th e USB cable i nto the device’ s Charger / Accessory Port (2).

Getting Started 11 Make it Google This screen displays if you did not sign into your Google account. The Make it Google screen allo ws you to create a new Google account. Note: If you skipped Wi-Fi setup, the Wi-Fi setup screen displays and you must connect t hrough a Wi-Fi network.

14 Installing a Memor y Card 1. Open the Memory Card Sl ot cover and tu rn to expose the slot. 2. With the gold contacts facing do wn, carefully slide the memory ca rd into the slot (1), pushing gently until it clicks into place (2). 3. Replace the Memory Card Slot cover .

26 Pinch Use two fingers , such as your index finger and thumb, to make an inward pinch motion on the screen, as if you are picking something up, or an outward moti on by sweeping your fingers out. For example: • Pinch a photo in Gall ery to zoom in.
Understanding Y our Device 27 R emo ving the S Pen F rom Y our Device The S Pen is conveniently stored in your device to make it easy to f ind. T o remov e the S Pen, follow these steps: 1. Locate the S P en at the lower right corner of the device (1).

Battery L evel : Shown fully ch arged. Charging Indicator : Battery is cha rging. Device P ower Critical : Batter y has only three percent power remaining.
34 Primar y Shor tcuts Primary Sho rtcuts display at the bottom of the main Home screen. Tip : The main Home screen is usually the center Home screen. The default Primary Shortcuts are: S Note, S Planner , PS T ouch, Smart Remote, Maps, Internet, Samsung Apps, and Play Store.

38 Multi W indow T r ay There are shortcuts avai lable that link to apps that you might need while working in other a pps, such as Alarm, Calculator , Music Player , and so on. In some cas es, these shortcuts are actually links to the part of the app you need most and they contain a link to the actual a pp where you can use other functions.

40 Apps Scr een The Apps screen displays all appli cations installed on your wireless device. Applica tions that you download a nd install from Google Play or from the web are als o added to a Home screen. The Apps icons are arranged in a customizable grid.

42 Using the Samsung K eyboard The Samsung keyboard is a cust om virtual QWERTY keyboard, featuring optiona l predictive text. Input characters by touching the on-sc reen keys with your finger or use speech recognition. Y ou can enable predictive text, to have the Samsung keyboard match your key touches to common w ords and displays them.

Enter upper and l ower case alpha bet letters by touching t he Shift key t o toggle the case, before touching the letter key(s).
44 Editing T ext Y ou can edit the text yo u enter in text fields by cutting, copying, or pasting text. These operations can b e performed within and across apps. Ho wever , some apps do not support editing some or all of the text displayed while ot hers may offer their ow n way to select text .

46 Handwriting Tips • For uppercase letters, write the letter larger than the lower case letters. • Write a dash (horizonta l line) to add a space. • Delete words by sweepin g backward across them. • T o display numbers an d symbols, touch and then touch a number or symbol key.
Contacts and Accoun ts 47 Section 3: Contacts an d Accounts This section explains how to manage contacts and accounts. Accounts Y our device can synchronize with a variety of accounts. With synchronization, infor mation on your device is updated with any informa tion that changes in your accounts.
48 Contacts Store contact information for your friends, family , and colleagues to quickly access information or to send a message. T o access Contacts: From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . Creating Contacts 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts ➔ .

Contacts and Accoun ts 51 Sharing Contact Information Y ou can send a contact’ s information by way of Bluetooth to other Bluetooth devices or in an Emai l or Gmail as an atta chme nt. Note: Not all Bluetooth de vices a ccept contacts and not all devices support transfers of multiple contacts.
52 Groups Assign contacts to Groups to make searching for contacts faster or to quickly send messages to group members. Creating a New Group Create a new group when yo u add or edit a contact. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Contacts . 2. T ouch Groups above the Contacts List.

Messaging 57 Managing Y our Gmail Conv ersations In addition to managing your Gmail account, there are options for changing the status of one or more Gmail conversations in an account.
58 Composing and Sending Gmail 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Gmail . 2. To u c h Compos e . 3. T ouch the To field to enter re cipients. As you enter names or email addresses, ma tching contacts display . T ouch a contact to add it to the field.

60 Email Use Email to view and manage all your email accounts in one application. Configuring Email Accounts 1. From a Home screen, touch Email . – or – From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Email . 2. At the Set up email screen, enter an Email address and Password , then touch Next .

62 Managing Y our Email Accounts Y ou can view emai l you receive for all accounts in the Combined view screen or you can view email accounts individually . 1. From a Home screen, touch Email . 2. T ouch the drop-down menu at th e top left of the screen to select: • Combined vi ew : View all email in a combined inbox.

64 7. T ouch Save to save the email to the Drafts folder , Send to send the email, or Delete to delete the email. Account Settings Account settings lets you config ure handling of email on your device.

66 • Out of office settings : Lets you set how email is handled for a defined period of time , while you are unable to check your email. • Size to retrieve emails : Set the maximum email retriev al size. Options are: Headers o nly , 0.5, 1, 2, 5,10, 20, 5 0, or 100 KB, or All.

Internet and Social Networking 77 Local Google Local (originally Google Places ) is an application that uses Google Maps and your location to help you find destinations, such as restaurant s, bars, hotel s, attractions, A TMs, and gas sta tions. Y ou can also a dd your own loca tions.

80 Play Magazines Google Play Magazi nes helps yo u su bscribe to your fa vorite magazi nes so you can ha ve them available to rea d on your tablet at your leisure. Play Magazines requires that you log on to your Google account. F or more information, refer to “Accounts” on page 169.
Music 81 Section 6: Music This section explains how to use the music features of your device including the Music app, t he Music Player , and the Music Hub. Listening to Music Y ou can listen to musi c by using your device’ s built-in speakers, through a wired he adset, or through a wireless Bluetooth stereo headset.
82 Changing Librar y View Y ou can change the way you vi ew the contents of your library. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Play Music . 2. T ouch the name of the current view , such as Recent , near the top-left of the Application bar . 3. T ouch an option to se t how you view your librar y .

84 Music Player Music Player plays songs sto red on your tablet or an install ed memor y card. 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Music Player . The Music Player ap plication searches your device’ s internal storage or o n an installed memory card for music and playlists.

86 Changing the Order of a Playlist 1. T ouch the Playlists tab and touch a playlist. 2. T ouch Change order or Menu ➔ Change order in portrait mode. 3. T ouch the grid for an entry and drag the entr y to a new position in the list. 4. T ouch Done to change the order and save the playlis t.
Music 87 Accessing the Music Play er If you naviga te away from the Music Player a pplication and music is playing, the Music notifica tion icon is displayed in the Syst em Bar . Y ou can change songs or easily ret urn to the Music Player: 1. T ouch the Music notification icon in the System Bar .

During playback, use the sou nd and playlist controls: •F a v o r i t e : T ouch the star to mark the curren t song as a favorite. •V o l u m e : T ouch to toggle Silent and Sound mode, then touch and drag on the scale to se t volume. Y ou can also press the Volum e Key on the side of the device to adjust playback volume.

Photos and Video 91 Section 7: Photos and Video This section explains how to use your device’ s built-in camera and camcorder , the Video Player app to view and manage videos, and the Gallery app to view , capture, and manage photos and videos. It al so contains an overview of the PS T ouch app, Media Hub, and Video editor apps.
92 T aking Photos T o take a photo: 1. From a Home screen, touch Apps ➔ Camera . 2. Using the display as a view finder , compose your photo by aiming the lens at the subject. T o configure settings, see “Camera Settings” on page 92. 3. T o ta ke the photo, touch t he Camera button.
Photos and Video 93 Configuring Cam era Settin gs T o configur e Camera settings: While in Camera mode, touch a settings short cut or touch Setting s to configure the following camera settings: • Edit short cuts : Customize your settings shortcuts.
94 •I S O : This value determ ines how sensitive the light meter is on your digital camera. Use a lowe r ISO number to make your camera less sensitive to light, a higher ISO number to take photos with less light, or Auto to le t the camera automatically adjust th e ISO for ea ch of your s hots.
Photos and Video 95 6. T ouch Share to share the photo. T ouch an option, such as Bluetooth, and follow the on-screen instructions. After using this option, the mos t recent Share option is displayed in the Applica tion Bar . 7. T o delete the photo being displayed, touch Delet e and then touch Delete to delete the photo or Cancel to exit.
