Getting Started 4 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to star t using y our SCH-U450 phone by activating your service, setting up your Voicemail, or getti ng an understanding of how this manual is put together .
5 1. Insert the top end of the battery first, matching the gold contac ts on the inside of the batt ery to those on the phone. 2. Press lightly on the bottom end of the batt ery do wn into the phone until it slips into place. 3. Position the batter y cover onto the phone (1) and press lightly downward (2) on the cover until it clicks into place.
Getting Started 6 2. Insert the smaller end of the T ravel Adapter into the char ger/ accessor y connector on the lower left side of your phone. Warni ng!: Y our touch screen responds best to a light touch from the pad of your finger or a non-metallic stylus.

9 Section 2: Understanding Y our Phone This section outlines some key features of your phone. It also describes the screen format and th e icons that will b e displayed when the phone is in use. Understanding Y our Phone 1 4 Under standing the Display Screen 1. The top line of your phone’ s display contains icons th at indicate network status, batter y power , signa l strength, connection type, and more. 2. The center portion of the display shows information such as call progress information, messages, and photos.
15 • Error – Example: “System Error!” • Wa r n i n g – Example: “Low Battery ,” “Memory Full!” Bac klights Backlights illuminate the display and the keypad. When you press any key or o pen the phone, the ba cklights come on. They go off when no keys are pressed within a period of time set in the Backlight menu.
Understanding Y our Phone 1 6 Place Calls in Standby Mode 1. While in Standby mo de, enter a phone number , and press to place a call. 2. Press to return to Standby mode. Receiv e Messa ges in Standby Mode Y ou can re ceive messa ges in Standby mode. When a message arrives, an alert tone sounds a nd the new message appears in the display .
17 Adjust the Master V o lume 1. In Standby mode, press the V olume key ( ) on the right side of the phone up or down. Options are: 2. When you are satisf ied with the setting, press the key . Y our phone returns to Standby mod e. Tip : Y ou can also access the Master V olume screen by pressing the Menu key ( ), then pressing the , , and keys.
Call Functions 18 Section 3: Call Functions This section explains how to make or answer a call. This section also inc ludes the features and fun ctionalit y associated w ith making or answe ring a call. Making a Call — Number Entr y Dialing 1. With the phone on, enter the nu mber you wish to call using the keypad.
19 T o manually call a number with pause(s) without storing it to your Contacts: 1. Enter the number yo u wish to call. 2. Press Options . A pop-up menu containing the f ollowing options appears in the disp lay: • P P ause — a hard pause (awai ts in put from yo u).
Call Functions 20 Pause Dialing F rom a Contac ts Entr y • If you speed dial a co ntact that contains four -second (T) pause(s) simply wait for the pauses to pa ss and the dialing to complete.
21 2. Say , “ Call ”. Y ou are prompted to “ Say the name or # ”. 3. Speak clearly and say the name of a perso n in your Contacts list, fi rst name followed by last name. If the name is recogniz ed, Voice Dial repea ts the name and dials the n umber .
Call Functions 22 Pause Dialing F rom a Contac ts Entr y • If you voice dial a c ontact that contains (hard waits) P P ause(s), wait for the appropriate prompt(s) from the number you are calling (credit card number , bank account number , and so on) and enter the appropriate response(s).
23 Do one of the followin g: • Use the Navi gati on key to hig hlight a menu or featu re. Pr ess the key to open the highligh ted me nu or to activate the high lighted feature. • Pres s the key to exit the menu . Tip : Y ou can block sound going to the other party(ies) on this call by pressing Mute / Unmute .

Note: Although all procedures in this section are written for the phone keypad, you can also perform these procedures using the QWERTY keypad.

31 Section 5: Understanding Y our Contacts This section explains how to ma nage your daily contacts by storing their name and number in y our Contacts.

Finding a Contacts Entr y V oice Me thod Use the VoiceSignal Contacts command to view cont act information for any named contact st ored in your Contacts list by saying the name.

When the desired Contacts entr y is listed in the display , highlight th e contac t using th e navigation keys (i f necessar y), then do one of t he followi ng: • T o dial t he number associa ted with the na med Contact , pr ess .
37 • T P ause — A four -second pause stops the calling se quence for four seconds and then a utomatically sends the remaining digits. Tip : Y ou can enter multiple four -second pauses to extend the length of a pause. F or example, two consecutive four -second pauses cause a total pause time of eight seconds.
Understanding Y our Contacts 38 Assi gnin g Speed Dial Number s When you add o r edit an entry to the Contacts list, you ha ve the option of assigning a Speed D ial number using the Options pop - up menu or of returning to th e Contacts menu and using the Speed Dial option.
39 10. Select Set as/Remove Speed Dial . The Speed Dials screen appears in the display . (If a speed dial num ber has been set previously , you can remove it by pressing . If none has been set, continue with the next step.) 11. Select an unas signed Speed Dial number to assign it to the selected Contact.

Entering T ext 42 Section 6: Entering T ext This section outlines how to sele ct the desired text entry mode when entering characters using th e phone keypad or the nested, QWER TY keyboard-st yle keypad. Th is section also describes how to use the T9 p redicti ve text en try system to reduce the nu mber of key stroke s need ed to enter text.
43 Ti p: Using the Q WERTY keypad, also use 123 mode to enter symbols into your message si mply by pressing the keys labeled wi th the sym bols you wa nt. • Symbols — Using the phone keypad, enter a symbol into your message by pressing the number above the s ymbol in the SYMBOLS pop-up window .

Messaging 52 Tip : Verify whether and when a message or Email was successfully received by enabling the Deliver y Ack message send option. (For more information, refer to “Send Picture Messages in Came ra Mode” on page 47.) 1. In Standby mode, press Message , then select Outbox .

59 Section 10: Camera Use your U450 phone to take full color digital pi ctures, display them on your ph one’ s vivid color display , and instantly share them with family and friends. It’ s fun, and as easy to use as a traditional po int-and-click camera.
Camera 60 Cam era Sc reen Sof t K eys The soft ke y labels on the bottom line of the display change to the following : • Gallery — Pressing the Left soft key opens the My Images multimedia folder so you can view or man age your stored pictures.
61 Re s o l u t i o n Resolution lets you ch ange the clarity (in pixels) and size (in bytes) of your pictures. 1. In camera mode, press , then highli ght the Reso lution setting. The fo llowing values appear in the c amera screen: • 1280 X 960 (pixels) • 640 X 480 (pixels) • 320 X 240 (pixels) • 176 X 144 (pixels) 2.

63 Settings When you change Camera Setti ngs values, your changes are saved for future camera sess io ns, unlike changes to Camera Options. T o restore Ca mera Se ttings to their de fault value s, select Reset Settings . (F or more information, refer to “Reset Settings” on page 64.
Camera 64 2. Select the viewfinder scre en se tting of your choice. Y ou’re returned to the came ra viewfinder screen. Shutter Sound Choose from four different sounds whenever y ou take a picture. Aside from being a cool sound e ffect, Shutter Sounds acts as an audible reminder that your camera has take n a picture.
