6 Section 1: Getting Star ted This section explains how to st art using your phone by first configuring your hard ware, activating your servic e, and then setting up your voice ma il. Setting Up Y our Phone Prior to us e it is ne cessary to insta ll both the battery and SIM into their corresponding internal comp artments .
Getting Started 7 Note: If the card is not inserted correctly , the phone does not detect the SIM card. Reorient the card back into the slot. Ins tal lin g the Memor y C ar d Y our phone also supports the use of a memor y card (microSD™) for data storage of such things as data, music, pictures, and video f iles.
8 3. Replace the ba ttery cover onto the back of the phone (3). 4. While applying pressure, slide the top portion towards the camera area (4) until you hear a light click. Note: Make sure the batter y is properly installed before switching on the phone.

Understanding Y our Phone 17 Using the Multitasking Menu This key ( ) launche s the Multitask me nu that c an be activated fr om within a ny active window or page on the phone. There is no need to stop what yo u are doing, if you quickly want to jump out and activate another common feature.
18 Section 3: Menu Naviga tion This section explains the menu na vig ation for your phone. The a877 has done away with the n eed for navigation whee ls or keypads. The a877 is completely na vigable by either an onscreen touch or scroll. • T ou ching an o nscreen opti on activ ates the feature.
Menu Navigation 19 • Press to exi t from th e curre nt menu and retu rn to the previ ous screen. • Press to exit from the current location /funct ion, can cel your input and return to the Idle screen. Navigating T hro ugh Menus As you navigate through a menu, options display on the s creen as scrollab le lists.
20 Note: Scrolling requires that you press firmly on the screen then drag. When scrolling through a list make sure not to touch or press individual entries on the list as this will open the list entry . Accessing the Phone’s Ma in Men u Once you display a menu list, ta pping an item causes different functions, depending on its function.
Menu Navigation 21 Scrolling T hrough Field Entries Some scre ens will ask you to as sign a val ue to an onsc reen fiel d by either touching the up/down selection arrows or by quickly sliding through these valu es by using your fingerti p. Menu Navigation 23 Contact Fav orites : displays the Cont acts Favori tes list. Y ou can use the pull-down Contacts menu to select all Cont acts and Groups. • Drag and drop the Contacts Favorites onto the display screen to view the contacts by either Favorites, Groups , or all Contacts.
24 Birthday : displays an o nscreen alert for a birthday occurring today on the cale ndar . These dates ha ve been previo usly entered for an entry within t he Address Book on the day a ssigned for that person's birthday . • For more information, refer to “Adding a New Contact” on page 79.
Menu Navigation 25 W idget Bar Navigatio n Y ou can drag the widgets to th e display screen to use the applica tion or feature, then drag it back to the Widget Bar when you are finished. Note: Many widgets can be used directly from the widget bar without dragging them onto the screen (ex: Bluetooth and Alarms).

Tip : Flick the screen in an upward motion to quickly scroll through the list.

Call Functions 29 Making a Call from the Addr ess Book Y ou can store phone numbers that y ou use regularly on the SIM card or in the phone’ s memor y . These entries are co llectively called the Address Book . For fu rther details about the Address Book f eature, see “Finding an Address Book Entry” on page 83.
30 Dialing Options From the Idle screen and Main menu, you ha ve the option to access the Dialer and initiate a call. When you manually e nter numbers from t he Dialer , you will see three di aling options displayed on the sc reen. • Call : dials the current number entered us ing the onscreen key pad.
Call Functions 31 7. During a Video Share session, your options are displayed as icons on t he screen. T o uch the corresponding icon to activate the fea ture. Tip : T o stop the video share call press the Stop key . 8. A pop-up message displays “ V ideo Sharing has been Stopped.

Call Functions 33 Viewing the Details of a Missed Call T o view the det ails of a select ed missed call, use the following steps: 1. T ouch t he Missed Ca lls dialog. A l ist of the most recently missed calls is displayed. 2. T ouch the desired missed call.

36 In-Call Option s During an active ca ll there are seve ral functions ava ilable by touching a corresponding onscreen button. • Spkr On/Off routes the phone’ s audio through either the speaker or through the earpiece. – Slide Speaker to On to route the au dio through the s peaker .
Call Functions 37 Switching Betw een Calls When you h ave an active call and a c all on hold , you may swit ch between the two ca lls, changing the one on hold to active and placing the other on hold.

Switc hing off the Micropho ne (Mute) Y ou can temporarily switch your phone’ s microphone off, so tha t the other person cannot hear you. Example: Y ou wish to say something to person in the room, but do not want the person on the phone to hear you.
Call Functions 39 Note: The Join option combines all of the calls you have established with your phone (both active and on hold). Swap places the current call on hold and then activates the previous call. This feature jo ins all of t he calls you have established with your phone (both active and on ho ld) into a multi-party cal l.
40 Section 5: Entering T ext This section outlines ho w to select the desi red text entry mode when entering characters using th e phone ke ypad or the nested, QWERTY keyboard-style keypad. Thi s section also describes how to use the T9 predicti ve text entry system to reduce the number of key stroke s needed to enter text .
Entering T ext 41 T e xt Input Options Y our phone has the fol lowing text input modes: • T9 ( ): this mode allows you to e nter words with only one keystroke per letter . Each key on the keypad has more than one letter; for example, touching can enter J, K, or L.
42 • Emotico ns ( ) 2. T ouch the text mode you desire . The text mode changes to the mode you touched. Using T9 Mode T9 is a predictive text input mode that allows you to key in any character using single keystrokes . This text input mod e is based on a buil t-in dicti onary .
Entering T ext 43 • T o enter periods, hyphens, and other special characters, touch the T ext Input button (bottom center), select Symbols ( ) and then touch the corresponding key . If the symbol does not display on the initial screen, touch the left or right arrow key to display the next set of symbols.
44 Using Numeric The Numeric mode enables you to en ter numbers into a text messag e. 䊳 T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bo ttom of the screen and select Numeric ( ), then touch the keys corresponding to the digits you want to enter . Using Symbols Symbol mode enabl es you to i nsert symbols and punctuation marks into text.
Entering T ext 45 3. Use your finger tip to write ou t each character . T ouch the Shift key to use uppercase letters. T ouch the Spac e key to create a space between letters, numbers, or symbols. Note: T o properly recognize the written characters and to prevent scratching of the LCD, do not use script.
46 Handwriting Mode-Entering Character s 1. T ouch the T ext Input Mode button at the bottom of the screen and select Abc . The input mode indicator then changes to which activate s the Initial uppercase function. 2. Write the desired text usin g your finger .

48 Changing the T ext Input Mod e - K eyboar d There are three main k e yboard la yout keys that will change the onscreen keys within the QWERT Y keyboard. The available T ext Input modes are: T9 , 1@ , Emo , and Abc . Refer to the T ext Input mode in the uppe r right hand corner to identify which mode you are currently in.

Changing Y our Settings 57 Outdoor Profile In this case, you are outdoors a nd might not be ab le to hear the phone, or need an increased volu me in order to hear the phone. For example, you might be joggi ng and need the phone to vibrate and ring loudly .
